The Queen Vic market is something of an institution in Melbourne and according to some functions as a type of social glue, beyond a place to get your fruit and veg – but as fruiters strike what would a Melbourne without the market look like? Also in this edition of The Conversation Hour we hear about a new resource launched by PANDA that seeks to support women from culturally diverse backgrounds experiencing perinatal anxiety and depression. And a list of the 100 highest paid athletes has been revealed, and they are all men.

While royal houses are often insular and even incestuous (at least at the cousin-marrying level), new blood does manage to enter those gene pools from time to time. Meet the Mountbattens! The family's story begins in Russia, circa 1850, where the orphaned daughter of a Polish general named Julia von Hauke was serving in the household of Maria Alexandrovna, future wife of future Tsar Alexander II. Maria's brother, Prince Alexander of Hesse and by Rhine, fell hard for the common-born Julia, a romance that was seemingly halted by Emperor Nicholas I, who wanted Prince Alexander to marry his niece. Unable to shake off their love, the two eloped, which left Alexander persona non grata in the Russian court. Returning to his native Hesse, Prince Alexander's brother, Grand Duke Louis III of Hesse-Darmstadt, granted Julia the title of Countess of Battenberg, named for a town in the north of the duchy, and later, Princess of Battenberg. But Europe's royal houses have both a long memory and an enormous snobbery, meaning that when Alexander and Julia's sons, The Battenberg Boys, began pursuing the granddaughters of England's Queen Victoria for marriage a generation later, the courtships - successful and unsuccessful - were rife with intrigue and scandal. But it was the marriage of Louis Battenberg to Queen Vic's granddaughter Princess Victoria of Hesse and by Rhine that would eventually transform the family from a tainted, common-born Battenberg lineage to the British Mountbattens, the house of Queen Elizabeth II's husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. But that's a story for next week. Listen ad-free at patreon.com/trashyroyalspodcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Rerun. Queen Victoria moved from her birthplace, Kensington Palace, and decreed Buckingham Palace her official residence on 13th July, 1837. She was 18, newly-crowned – and until then had shared a bedroom with her mother. Built in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham, the Palace had never previously permanently housed anyone, and was reportedly drafty, dirty, and staffed by ‘slovenly' servants. But, you know, she made do. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly examine the escapades of ‘the boy Jones' – a teenage stalker of the young Victoria; pore through the pages of the young monarch's diaries; and reveal which celebrities claim to have got down and dirty in the Queen's official residence… Further Reading: • Profile of Queen Victoria from Historic Royal Palaces: https://www.hrp.org.uk/kensington-palace/history-and-stories/queen-victoria/#gs.59mhsd • Buckingham Palace page at the Royal Collection Trust: https://www.rct.uk/visit/buckingham-palace/who-built-buckingham-palace#/ • ‘Victoria's Palace' documentary (ITV, 2019): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUn63ZIELxU&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Ftheretrospectors.com%2F&source_ve_path=MjM4NTE&feature=emb_title Love the show? When was the last time you sat down and watched an episode of a soap? Caught up with the gang in the Queen Vic, or popped by Coronation Street? We've already seen the end of Neighbours, and with soaps coming up against massive TV shows and reality hits, the question is…is this the end of the soap? Media sociologist and TU Dublin lecturer Eddie Brennan joined Dermot and Dave to chat about what could happen to the TV legends, and if they can be saved.
The end of both Holby City and Neighbours in the space of a few months suggests that something is wrong in the world of soaps. Viewers have been declining for years as soaps face competition from structured reality shows, streaming services and social media content. But millions still sit down every evening to see the ups and downs of the lives in Walford, Weatherfield and beyond, and EastEnders remains one of the most watched programmes on BBC iPlayer. So what role do soaps play in media landscape today? Should we expect the Queen Vic to be pulling its last pint, or are there many more births, deaths, marriages and everything in between still to come in the unpredictable world of soap operas? Sir Phil Redmond is the creator of Grange Hill, Brookside and Hollyoaks. Charles Collingwood has played Brian in The Archers since 1975. Emma Bullimore is a TV critic and soap fan. Daniel Kilkelly is soaps editor for entertainment news website Digital Spy. Presenter: Katie Razzall Producer: Tim Bano

This episode is a review of the Queen Victoria Market's Ultimate foodie tour. The Queen Victoria Market officially opened on 20 March 1878 in Melbourne, Australia. It has changed over the years, but it is still one of Melbourne's busiest markets. From its produce stalls to souvenirs, it is a hotspot for tourists. The Ultimate foodie tour is a great introduction to Melbourne's food culture and history. This is not just a tour for tourists; local's love this tour too. Mishel was not paid for this review. This is her honest opinion and review of the Ultimate Foodie Tour. There's a rare treat on the podcast this week. Your hitherto unknown Producer gets so sick of Whitto rambling on about Keaton Jennings that he takes over! In this episode, Queen Vic, WKD and cricket landmarks. Plus with the Oscars on Sunday we thought it would be fun to create a CricOscars to make the past week of cricket appear interesting... Your films to choose from: Braveheart, Pirates of the Caribbean and Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid. It'll make a bit of sense when you listen... Hopefully!
Xmas Special! If you thought the hard man of the Queen Vic will only be gracing our screens this xmas you'd be very wrong.... he's also all over the airways as our guest for this xmas special is none other than huge boxing fan Mr. Danny Dyer! It's July! And to celebrate we spoke to Scarf's Hannah Coleman and Leanne Clancy about their upcoming winter dinner series at Bhang; a bargain at $45 for two courses! We also had a market report with John at the Queen Vic.To finish the show we were joined by one of our faves, Bellota chef Nicky Riemer. We spoke about her favourite winter dishes, and why we should all drink more Chablis (assuming you can afford it!).
Giving chase to a perfectly despicable bad guy, our heroic Queen and her band of fearless action men are left with no choice but to bring about the calamitous destruction of Anglican property. It's all in a day's work for Queen Vic & The Valve Men...
A daring international mission gets underway, to get to the bottom of the most offensive hardware requisition ever known to Her Majesty...
Queen Victoria and her secret agent team find themselves strangely connected to an innocent person's gruesome demise. Behind it all lies something sinister, and stranger still. Then there's the carrier pigeon...
A steampunk comedy series set exactly where it should be, in Victorian England. Featuring none other than Queen Victoria herself and her covert team of crime-fighting secret agents. In this first episode she assembles her team, and disaster wastes no time in striking... Recorded by one voice playing many characters. Kind of an experiment. Do enjoy.
It's suddenly winter in Melbourne, and on today's show we spoke to Cam Russell about this season's Mornington Peninsula mushroom tours, we had a market report with John at the Queen Vic, and asked food writers Michael Harden and Hilary McNevin what they like to cook at home.
7:00am Intro and acknowledgement of country7:06am News: Webb Dock community assembly Update. Black Vote crucial in historic win, the first time in 25 years a democrat has won the seat.7:35am News: Turnbull attacks renewables (again)Highlights for the year - Equal Marriage win; Stop Adani campaign; Refugee and Asylum Seeker campaigns keeping it staunch; Corbyn's strong election campaign7:50am News: Shame on Newcastle ALP who control Newcastle City Council and this week voted to allow development on the rail corridor which the Liberal NSW government closed in 2014. This will permanently block off what had been the busiest section of the line.7:53am Another more detailed update (2 of 2) about the urgent call for submissions to save Sticky Institute and other heritage listed shops in Campbell arcade which are set to be demolished as part of an amendment to the Metro Tunnel design sneakily announced just before Christmas.7:58am News: Melbourne Palestine Solidarity protest held Dec 13 in response to Trump's announcement that the USA will now consider occupied Jerusalem the capital of Israel. Small far right protest led by Zionist Fascist Avi Yemeni greatly outnumbered by Palestine supporters.8:02am Activist calendar8:12am Interview - Mary Lou speaks with Jacob and Zane about the Friends of Queen Vic Market campaign, which is holding a rally at 11am tomorrow (Sat 16th). If it ain't broke, don't fix it! The rebuilding of Vic markets, if it proceeds will fundamentally damage the character of this historic heart of the city.
Martine McCutcheon, real life east ender, became famous as a TV Eastender in the 90s playing Tiffany, on off love interest for hi-maintenance Grant Mitchell, until she was squished by Frank Butcher outside the Queen Vic on Christmas Eve. She reinvented herself as a pop star - having a Perfect Moment in 1999 with the chart topping song of that name - and then another perfect moment co-starring with Hugh Grant in the Richard Curtis romcom, Love Actually. Off screen life, however, was complicated and after an award winning but stormy run in My Fair Lady in the West End, things went Pete Tong. Illness, bankruptcy, time to regroup - but now, fighting fit, she's back with a new album. When Benjamin Mee's dad died, he persuaded his mum to buy a zoo so that the whole family could live together. Of course it wasn't as easy as that - there were plenty of challenges along the way. But his story was made into a film starring Matt Damon in 2013. With the thank you slot, when we offer you the opportunity to thank someone for a good deed done by left unthanked, we're especially delighted on the rare occasion when a thanker is reunited with a thankee. But, people of Britain, today we reunite two of them live in the studio. Rabia Dignam and Sir Harold Walker, who met in a crowded and extremely tense Baghdad airport during the Iraqi Invasion of 1990. There's not much Gabe Cook doesn't know about cider. He's made cider for big name companies and small breweries. He's done the PR for the UK cider industry. And now he is his own man - a ciderologist and Britain's first 'pommelier'. The adorable and thoroughly cherished Roy Hudd was on Saturday Live a while ago with tales of his six decades in showbiz. He started as a redcoat, has appeared in everything from panto to Broadchurch, presented the News Huddlines here on Radio Four for a quarter of a century, and is today a custodian of anecdotes to the platinum standard of Ned Sherrin. Heritage on legs, people, and we thought we'd be unforgivably remiss if we didn't get him to surrender his Inheritance Tracks. Cally Beaton has done alright. She worked her way up to senior Vice President at the media company Viacom International. Then inexplicably at the age of 45 she decided to get into stand-up comedy. Her show Super Cally Fragile Lipstick will be in Edinburgh from August 5th And as you know we always want to hear from you - the listener. This week's Call Out is asking 'what unusual job do you do and how did you get into it'? In fact do you have such an unusual job most people wouldn't even know it exists? We have heard of people who are professional mourners. One person even told us they had a job as a professional 'cuddler'. We want to hear from you. We're very excited to be back for 2017 and another year on the mighty 3RRR! We had a quick chat about what we ate over the summer period. We had a chat to Dr Rosemary Stanton about all the supposedly miraculous weight-loss methods that seem to pop up at this time of year. Goji berries? Chia seeds? And more recently, tumeric? Guess what, none of these foods have any magical properties and won't cure your cancer. Just eat a healthy balanced diet and you'll be the best you that you can be.Next up we had our first market report for 2017 with John at the Queen Vic.Max Allen is one of Australia's leading wine writers, and he made the trek into East Brunswick to have a chat about all things vintage 2017. In short, this year feels like it's "back to normal" with the vintage no longer being so early and a slightly cooler summer. We also had a look at a McLaren Vale wine called Lino Ramble, which is one of the new gen of McLaren Vale wines made "on the side" by winemakers who also work for bigger labels.
