Louis Belcourt/ CKTZ News - Sunflower Foods, a local food company, launched a Pay It Forward program this winter as a way to donate healthy pre-made meals to the food bank. "We wanted to find a way to provide food for people who couldn't afford it, who were on disability, who did need some sort of subsidy. At first we were just marking down the price for them and it was coming out of our pockets. It started to get a little more difficult for us and we didn't wanna start losing money on this. And so we came up with the idea of having the community donate," said Carrie Taylor, founder of Sunflower Foods. The Pay It Forward program started on Feb. 21. If someone wants to donate the cost of a pre-made Sunflower Foods meal at the local food bank, Sunflower Foods will match that donation. "So for the first month we didn't have anything but the second month when we started the program, after we started the meal delivery service, we had something like 70 meals go in. So we had 35 donations. We matched it with 35 meals, and we had given away all those meals for free to people who needed them." The company also launched a new meal delivery service on Cortes Island Feb. 1; this is currently the only delivery service available on Cortes since Meals on Wheels stopped during the pandemic. "There were a lot of people reaching out that wanted to make sure their elderly family members were eating well. Some of the people who used to rely on them Meals on Wheels program that stopped for a period of time. They were reaching out, asking if we could do something like that and so we decided to put something together that would suit a few different people's needs," said Taylor.

I've been delving into my family history a little more than usual and perhaps you are too. I'm also taking another look at my pictures. Examining them more closely and trying to tell the story of them. Even I have a photo mystery, one that's bothered me for years. I've managed to tease out a few new identifications but the problem persists. It could be a group of friends mixed with some of my family. The issue is the number of images in my family collection. I don't own many images of this side of my family and neither do my relatives. Comparing images to each other could result in an identification. I believe that persistence will pay off. I'll be using crowdsourcing as well. If someone can identify the place where this group of men and boys posed it might help. A long time ago I dated that image. That's the first step in any photo mystery. I've named a few folks but who are the rest? I know that you know this dilemma: big group portraits are a mystery for many people. I've developed techniques to help you figure out who's who. These images are perfect for a single photo consult. See the show notes for the link.A New WorkshopIn a few weeks, I'll be announcing a special class. It's an interactive live workshop on Reading Clues in Photo Albums. I LOVE working on photo albums telling the family story visible in those pages and teaching you how to do it too. This small class is for those with photo albums who want to know more. It's either going to be a long workshop or a series of classes where we can talk about your albums and find out more about them. It will be limited to 25. With albums, it's all about that first photo. Who is it? Why are they there? My signature five approach of who, what, where, when and why applied to albums often reveals hidden relationships of family and friends of your ancestors. I hope you'll be able to join me. Can't wait to see who and what are in your albums. Everyone is unique. Sure there are similarities with format and size, but the contents are special to your family. Someone put those pages together with intent and purpose. Doesn't matter if it's a tiny tintype album or an oversize black paper one or even one of those toxic magnetic ones, each and every one tells a story and I'd love to help you reveal it. Your family will love you for it. Stay tuned. Subscribers to my newsletter will get the first chance to sign up. If you're not on my list, you can sign up on my website. What will I do in 2021? I'm planning a series of webinars and workshops to deepen your understanding of photographs. Wait and see! New Things on Social I'll be wrapping up my around the world in 80 photos social media campaign. Hope you've been watching on Facebook and Instagram. I thought it was timely for this year. We really aren't traveling, but our photographs can take us around the world. Thank you for sharing related images with me too. On social I'm considering posting a lot of unnamed photos and seeing if anyone recognizes the places in them. I'm taking my cues from the Library Of Congress. They pick images from their collection and let us all weigh in on the mysteries. Some require research while others need particular time period knowledge. Obviously, I'm a fan. Houses and PhotosBy now you've listened to the podcast featuring Carrie Taylor of the Lippitt House talk about how a photo provided clues to decorating the historic house with authentic drapes. Do you know someone who's used a photograph to help them understand their neighborhood, decorate their house or who knows. I'd love to talk with them. Do you love old houses? I live in one built in 1896. I'd love to find a few pictures of the inside when it was first built. Nothing yet, but I'm still looking. Have you connected genealogy and house history? It's the best way to locate images of historic houses. The descendants of the original residents may have some. We're only the fifth owner of this house. Time to start looking! You might love a show on television. I'm a big fan of the HGTV show Home Town with Ben and Erin Napier. What's not to love?! Their new season starts soon according to their show notes Viewers can anticipate a whole new collection of hour-long episodes, each detailing one of the couple's distinctive and design-centric renovations of a vintage or historic home in the town of Laurel, Mississippi — and always with their astute and respectful consideration of the home's history and community context. Carrie Taylor is an "incredible" source of inspiration for so many! She is the real-life essence of the person who is "blind" to what reality attempted to place before her, and instead forged ahead allowing nothing to stop her pursuit of excellence, bettering herself, and creating a career in the world of professional soccer! This interview is a long one, BUT it is filled with a "Ton" of "Golden Nuggets" for parents, coaches, and athletes of every level. Some of the incredible pieces of insight she shares rests in her insights as to how we can develop "better" and more "creative" athletes. She shares with us, the "Power" of Goal Setting (at the Pro Level ... and ANY level), as well as the power of communication and relationship building skills. As Assistant Coach for the San Diego Loyal (San Diego's Professional Soccer team), she will be working along-side the most prolific American soccer player to have ever represented the United States - Landon Donovan. Her story is one of inspiration, mental strength (determination), and a strong sense of "openness" to opportunity. Carrie shares with the HeadSet Sports PodCast numerous opportunities that she pursed, out of passion. Only to later realize how impactful and advantageous her sacrifices would grow to become. Carrie's career is the culmination of the pursuit of one's passion! ... (This ... and many more traits ... are what make her a true role model and source of inspiration!). One of the added amazing things about this professional coach, is that she is a person who believes and "follows through", with the worlds many of us say ... but never act upon! Carrie doesn't just talk about "Paying it Forward" or "Remembering where you came from ...". She has created the Carrie Taylor Scholarship fund for young athletes in home town (Flint Michigan), that will continue to provide educational opportunities for young ladies for "many" years ahead! You can follow Carrie on Twitter and through the San Diego Loyal's website: @SanDiegoLoyal https://www.sdloyal.com/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/headset-sports/support

This week, The Coaching Journey is excited to welcome Carrie Taylor on the show! Carrie is a coach, writer for SoccerNation, and she is also the host of Women Talking Football, a radio show! Our discussion today focuses on women involved in the sport, as we look at the difficulties many women face in a sport that some wrongfully consider to be a "man's game." Why do we see a dearth of female coaches? Why does a man coaching a female team not raise any issues, but a woman coaching a male team raises concern? This is an important and frank discussion that everyone should listen to, because Carrie looks at the double standards that have been placed on the environment and discusses them in an open and honest manner. As we always say, together we can help shape the future of the game. Carrie offers one of our most important podcasts to date, and she provides some must listen commentary on a topic that has wide-ranging consequences. Deafness is a hidden ‘disability’. In sports such as soccer, players face certain hidden disadvantages, such as not being able to hear their coach’s instructions during a game, a referee’s decision or even the roar of the crowd. Oftentimes deaf soccer players compete regularly against their hearing peers and these aspects of the game, which many of us take for granted, can make a difference during the course of a match. Players must have an average hearing loss of 55 Decibels or more in the best ear. All players competing in deaf matches must remove all hearing aids before playing which creates another obstacle to overcome, balance – another important advantage for a hearing player. The women are the reigning 2005, 2009, and 2013 Deaflympics Gold Medal winners. They are also the two time 2012 and 2016 Deaf World Cup Champions. SoccerNation’s Carrie Taylor spoke with the Head Coach of the Deaf Women’s National Team, Amy Griffin, who is a former USWNT player and also the Associate Head Coach of the University of Washington.
