For this episode of Brewstilled, it's a recap of the 2024 California Craft Beer Summit. For this year's summit, attendees saw a follow up from the topics addressed at last years CCBA summit. Such issues addressed were legislative updates, the growing rise of low ABV beer, food pairings and an opening address from Rob Todd from Allagash Brewing Company in Maine. There was also a trade floor that consisted of vendors such as brewing equipment, beer label makers, Hop Farmers and more. I'll be discussing it all here on Brewstilled, along with some thoughts on the state of the beer industry. It's all here on Brewstilled.

The Brewbound team discusses recent headlines, including Pontoon Brewing's split from Bevana as part of its Chapter 11 filing, Karben4's bankruptcy filing and JuneShine's proposed acquisition of Flying Embers. Plus, it's Women's History Month and Zoe and Jess have thoughts.
Some of you may be familiar with Link Up, a craft beer-focused non-profit organization that BAOS Co-Founded with their friends at 5e Baron. Tiffany and Cee were honoured to host a session at the 2023 Ontario Craft Brewers Conference in Niagara Falls, ON where they spoke on behalf of Link Up about the ethics and economics of diversity in craft beer. They covered why diversifying your workforce is an ethical decision (and it's just weird to walk into a room that doesn't represent the world outside the brewery), case studies and real-life examples of how diversity can directly lead to sales and positive brand engagement, some numbers that explain the revenue that breweries are missing out on by ignoring a diverse consumer base, and most importantly, applicable solutions for breweries to actively work towards diversifying their taprooms and staff. Many thanks to the OCB, CCBA, Jeff Talmey and Troy Burtch for inviting Link Up to speak. See you in Hamilton in 2023! The CA Craft Beer Summit is a 2 day educational convention put on by the CCBA. This year celebrated to 30th anniversary of the CCBA! The convention culminates with a giant, California beer festival featuring over 600 breweries and 1800 beers. That happens to be the largest beer festival on the West Coast. We are thankful that we had the chance to attend. I found many of the seminars informative and really enjoyable. In particular, 2 speeches hit home with me, Dr J. Jackson-Beckam's (BA's director of Diversity) session titled “Stop ‘Doing Diversity!' Build an Inclusive, Equitable, and Just Workplace that Drives Success” and Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewery on "Reality vs. facsimile" in the American Food Culture and the Implications for Craft Beer. This week's show is focused on standout moments from both of these speakers, I hope you enjoy this unique episode! If you are reading this on release day, 9/23, and can't make our First Anniversary Show Party tomorrow, be sure to leave us a voicemail at 619-698-7038 that tells us your favorite moment from the first year of TIBS! We'll play them all on the anniversary Show! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Eppig Brewing is in the middle of an extremely long hitting streak and will be the first company to successfully leave the Brewery Igniter program! With a new 30 BBL production facility nearing completion in Vista, the Oktoberfest season almost upon us, and their third anniversary on the horizon, we thought it was a great time to sit down with Nathan and Clayton, both co-founding brewers and have a discussion about all things Eppig! They have garnered notoriety for their lagers but I'm a fan of their entire portfolio of well executed beers. We dip into the history of the name of their brewery, discuss the Oktoberfest celebrations, get an update on their new location and some possible timelines for debuting in North County, and have a blast hanging out with two seriously authentic brewers that genuinely love their craft. This would be a great episode to listen to while visiting their Waterfront Biergarten, just saying. Hit the play button and enjoy! ** Heads up! We'll be taking a week off next week. Don't worry, we'll be back the following Monday with some interviews from the CCBA conference and festival in Long Beach!** See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
While I was still under the weather, Esthela and Brandon had the chance to interview several integral members of California Craft Brewers Association at their annual Spring Conference. If you're not aware, The California Craft Brewers Association is a 501(c)6 non-profit trade association representing the craft and specialty brewing industry in California. Formed in 1989, the CCBA is the oldest state trade association representing craft breweries. The CCBA is committed to protecting the growth, quality and variety of California's craft brewing industry. The primary function of the CCBA is to monitor legislative activity at the state Capitol and provide a single and coherent political voice representing the interests of all of California's craft breweries. They discuss the origin of the association, what their roles are, and some of the important work the organization does on a daily basis. In the middle segment Brandon and Esthela are joined by Chris Cramer: Co-founder/Co-owner of Karl Strauss Brewing and the current Chair of the CCBA. They discuss the importance of protecting the craft beer/indie beer friendly regulations that we currently have in California and how the association fortifies the strength of the craft industry here in CA.In the final segment they are joined by Tom McCormick, the Executive Director of the CCBA. Tom mentions several bills they are addressing currently, specifically A.B. 1713, and A.B. 205; you can follow those links to get updates and more information. Natalie Cilurzo from Russian River Brewing Co. is back on the program today, along with Peter from Stumptown Brewery and JC Fluger with J Christopher Rubs. Steve Jaxon, Mark Carpenter and Herlinda Heras mention Wilibees in Petaluma and Santa Rosa as a great place to taste a great varieties of beer and whiskey. Tuesdays they have tacos, Saturday they have bands. Peter tells about their 16th annual Russian River Revival and Cook-Off on Saturday August 18, from 1-5 PM under the bridge at Monte Rio Beach. Natalie Cilurzo is back on Brew Ha Ha. Today she was a keynote speaker at the CFO of the Year awards in San Francisco. She brought a beer called “It takes a lot of great beer to make great wine” that Russian River Brewing Company makes. Natalie says that all during harvest, the workers like a cold beer (or six). This beer changes a little bit every year, either a lager or an ale. It’s low alcohol and brewed to be refreshing. It’s available in bottles and on tap at their tasting room. Mark Carpenter says that the Pale Ales have lots of subtle flavors and beautiful aromas while being lighter in alcohol. Natalie also brought their spontaneously fermented beer. It’s naturally fermented. They don’t add any yeast. They use a large wide flat tank, called a cool ship. They let it sit overnight and whatever ambient yeast is in the room is all it gets. It’s a bit sour, although this is very balanced. This one is Vinny Cilurzo’s favorite batch. They will have one big cool ship on the east side of the new brewery. This will allow them to take this style of beer to the next level. The 4th Annual California Craft Beer Summit in Sacramento will be in early September. Natalie is on the Board of Directors of the CCBA. There will be speakers, an expo hall, like a trade show, then it ends with a beer festival on the steps of the Capitol. It has grown every year and attracts guests from abroad. Greg Cook from Stone Brewing Company in San Diego will be the keynote speaker. Anyone can come to the trade show. It’s great for “civilian” drinkers who want to learn about brewing. Mark Carpenter spoke at it a few years ago, with Fritz Maytag (who founded Anchor Brewing). JC Fluger is also in today. His Jay Christopher Company was founded in 2015. He makes spice rubs. He started the project a little over 10 years ago. He noticed that when shopping for meat seasonings, most started with salt or sugar. He didn’t like that so he made his own and got good at it. He would bring his samples to his friends in the neighborhood and they were a hit.
