To Platon, den oln Philosoph to'n Bispeel, gifft dat allerhand Experten, de bilütten so doht, as harrn se Platon beter kinnt, as he sick sülms. Nu hett Platon je meist all sien Ideen as Dialoge opschreeven. Dor lacht man ni över. Dat Graff is noch gor ni ganz dichtschüffelt, dor ward al 'n schmucke Bronzetofel an't Gebuursthuus nogelt. Mit Bloskapell un Frack un Zylinder. Mennige vun ehr harrn wohrschienli direkt in't Graff roteert. Na jo. De Schriever Theodor Storm hett jedenfalls ook sien Plakette an't Huus kreegen. Kümmt man no't Storm-Huus in Husum, denn ward vertellt, dat Storm in Husum op de Welt kom‘ is un dat he den Schimmelrieder schreeven hett. Is je ook richti. Overs schreeven hett he sien Schimmelrieder even ni in Husum, sünnern in Homaschen (Hanerau-Hademarschen), wonehm he toletzt je to Huus weer. Denn as de Moler un Bildhauer Jens Rusch ut Brunsbüttel sien Biller to'n Schimmelrieder in Husum utstelln wull, hett he ni mol 'n anstännige Antwoord vun dor kreegen. In düssen Sinn

Was wir dann weiterführen sollen. Listen to this episode of The Concordia Publishing House Podcast as author and guest R. Reed Lessing takes a close look at recent interpretations, historical and canonical settings, genres, and more in the book of Lamentations. Lessing provides his perspective on all of these things and more in the newest volume in the Concordia Commentary series that he authored - Lamentations - Concordia Commentary. Pre-order the next Concordia Commentary edition on the book of Lamentations on our website today or subscribe to the Concordia Commentary series to save 30% on all new and previously published volumes.  Show NotesThe book of Lamentations, marked by its tone of mourning, loss, defeat, and heartache, provides neither a pleasant nor an easy read. Nonetheless, it meets us in the valleys of suffering we inevitably face, offering a glimpse of hope in God's faithfulness. In the newest Concordia Commentary volume on Lamentations, Lessing walks readers through this valley, providing insight into the history of interpretations, narratives, and theological context. Listen to the episode as Lessing talks with host Elizabeth Pittman about why Christians should read the book of Lamentations, the destruction of Zion with the temple in Jerusalem and its implications, the Law and Gospel parts included in the book, who he wants to reach with this commentary volume, and more.  QuestionsWhy should a Christian bother to read the biblical book of Lamentations? When we read through the English Bible, why not skip over this short book and go straight from Jeremiah to Ezekiel? Most of the book seems depressing. After all, it is a lament. Shouldn't Christians rejoice always? What place does a lament have in the Christian life? Should lamenting be part of the corporate worship life of the church? Is Lamentations ever read as part of the lectionary in the church year? When and why?Much of the book mourns the destruction of Zion with the temple in Jerusalem. When did this happen in history? What was the prior history of Zion earlier in the Bible? What happens to Zion later in the Bible?Does Zion have anything to do with Jesus in the Gospels, or with the Christian hope expressed in the rest of the New Testament?Do any Christian hymns feature Zion and the temple? Do hymns include laments? Is the book of Lamentations all Law? Is there Gospel hope in it anywhere? It seems like the beginning of the book and the end of the book are all about judgment, death, and mourning. Wouldn't it be better for a biblical book to start out happy and be optimistic at the end? If it has to have sad parts, why not hide them in the middle? In English the book is laid out as poetry. Is the Hebrew poetry? What constitutes Hebrew poetry? Does it have rhyme, or other things that mark it as poetry? Lamentations seems to repeat words and ideas in several lines or even a whole stanza. Why the repetition? Why not just say it concisely, once, and move on?What's up with the letters of the Hebrew alphabet that are reproduced in English Bibles? Finally, who do you want to reach with your commentary? About the GuestDr. – Morda zato, ker sta si – to je ob koncu 18. stoletja dokazoval nemški mislec Gotthold Ephraim Lessing – literarna in likovna umetnost pravzaprav diametralno nasprotni. – To so nekatera izmed vprašanj, ki so nas zaposlovala v tokratnem Kulturnem fokusu, ko smo pred mikrofonom gostili prav Milana Jesiha in Mirka Bratušo.   foto: Milan Jesih in Mirko Bratuša

This week's guest is Michael Donkor whose new novel Grow Where They Fall is a meticulous and tender exploration of two formative moments in the life of one Kwame Akromah, twenty years apart. Kwame is Black, Gay, British of Ghanian descent, a dedicated teacher, a dependable friend—character traits and conditions of life that weave around each other and interact, with unpredictable results—whether for the ten-year old boy or the grown man—at times lifting Kwame up, at other times dragging him down. Grow Where They Fall manages to be as gentle as it is spirited, as moving as is fun to read, and Donkor handles the changing register of life, and of London, in these different decades, with skill and verve. It is a book not just about growing up, and perhaps growing old, but also, in a sense, about growing out — growing out of the roles handed down to us by our families, growing out of friendships, growing out of jobs, and growing out of our own fixed ideas about ourselves. It's also a book which asks the essential human question: Is it ever really possible to know where we are going without first knowing where we have come from?Buy Grow Where They Fall: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/grow-where-they-fall*Michael Donkor was born in London in 1985. He was raised in a Ghanaian household where talking lots and reading lots were vigorously encouraged. Michael read English at Oxford where he developed a particular interest in the works of Woolf, Lessing and Achebe, and later undertook a Masters in Creative Writing at Royal Holloway. Michael worked in publishing for a number of years, but eventually decided to put his literary enthusiasms to other uses: in 2010, he retrained as an English teacher, teaching A-Level students, trying to develop a curious excitement about books and storytelling within his students. He now lives in Portugal, where he works as a bookseller. In 2014 Michael was selected by Writers Centre Norwich for their Inspires Mentoring Scheme, and worked with mentor Daniel Hahn. His first novel, HOLD, which explores Ghanaian heritage and questions surrounding sexuality, identity and sacrifice, was published by 4th Estate in 2018, and was longlisted for the Dylan Thomas and shortlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prizes. Michael was also selected by Scottish Poet Laureate Jackie Kay as one of the most important contemporary British BAME authors. He has written for the Guardian, the Telegraph, BBC Radio 3, the TLS and the Independent. Adam Biles is Literary Director at Shakespeare and Company. Following the first world war, Germany, having never found its feet economically throughout the conflict, now found itself crumbling under the further weight of heavy reparations. Many of those that had survived the fighting found themselves in a desperate state, carrying out all sorts of underground, legally dubious, or just straight up illegal activities, in order to get by. There were some that thrived in the lawless environment, profiteering from others misfortune, and then there were others, a very select few, who not only thrived, but positively excelled at breaking the law, and amongst those, there were one or two who did so in some very dark ways. Friedrich Haarmann was one such individual. Trading used clothing by day, he carried out a series of brutal murders that would earn him the monikers of “The Butcher of Hanover,” “The Wolf Man,” and “The Vampire of Hanover.” Perhaps even more frightening than his nicknames, was the attitude of the man himself, who once told a shocked audience, “Oh believe me, I'm not ill, it's only that I occasionally have funny turns.” SOURCES Theodor, Lessing (1925) Monsters of Weimar. Transitioning from being an expert to being a leader can be a challenging process for actuaries. Actuaries are known for their technical expertise and analytical skills, which they have honed through years of studying and passing exams. However, when they are promoted to leadership positions, they often struggle to step back from the technical work and trust others to handle it. In this episode, we dive into a conversation with Julia Lessing, a fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, Australia, and principal actuarial director of Guardian Actuarial, about building management and leadership skills that go beyond simply reading books or studying theory. Some of the insights shared are the need for actuaries to let go of control and trust their team members, as well as the importance of active listening and empathy in building strong relationships, the value of learning from mistakes, and the need for patience and flexibility in career progression. We show that leadership can be broken down into a set of micro-skills that can be learned, even when these skills don't come about naturally.   About the guest: Julia Lessing is a fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, Australia, with 20 years of experience as a consulting actuary. She is also a certified organizational coach and an experienced counselor. Julia established Guardian Actuarial in 2015, where she is the principal actuarial director. She is passionate about fostering forward-thinking leaders in the actuarial industry and runs the Guardian Actuarial Leadership program to help actuaries build their management toolkits and leadership skills. Julia is a mother of four adult children and is actively involved in her community as a qualified counselor for Lifeline and an authorized foster carer.   Resources: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/julia-lessing/   Website: https://www.guardianactuarial.com.au/ Guardian Actuarial Leadership Program: https://www.guardianactuarial.com.au/ga-leadership-program Podcast: https://www.guardianactuarial.com.au/podcast Recommendations:  Book “Courage to Lead” by Daphna Horowitz on Amazon Link: https://www.amazon.com/Courage-Lead-Leadership-Lessons-Kilimanjaro/dp/1920292284 Book “The Improbable Entrepreneur: A story about the other 99.9% of startups” by Ilan Leas Link: https://www.amazon.com.au/Improbable-Entrepreneur-story-about-startups-ebook/dp/B09WCVWJTK  Watch full episodes of “Leadership Live” podcast on Youtube Link: https://www.youtube.com/user/daphna1231    Timestamps: 3:40 The gap between technical skills and management skills 5:09 Importance of feedback in leadership 11:27 Challenges actuaries face when transitioning into leadership 13:00 We're not taught how to manage people at “actuary school” 14:05 Mindset shift: stepping back and teaching junior team members 15:17 Building confidence and trusting people to learn from mistakes 19:45 Learning skills from general life experiences 24:48 Integration of leadership skills with actuarial expertise 26:14 Communication micro-skills 32:18 Careers are not linear 38:10 The importance of networking and building relationships 39:21 Two books: motivation and sparking resources for future development 42:03 Can AI take on the role of leadership? 45:10 Connect with Julia Lessing   Key Takeaways: Actuaries often struggle with transitioning from expert to leader, particularly in letting go of control and trusting their team members. Developing leadership skills requires active listening, empathy, and the ability to understand and connect with team members on an individual level. Actuaries should embrace the non-linear nature of their careers and be open to sideways steps or additional experiences that can broaden their skill set. Building strong relationships and networking with colleagues and industry professionals is crucial for career growth and advancement. Actuaries should apply the time value of money concept to their careers, understanding that progress and success take time and patience.   Get in touch with Daphna Horowitz:  Official website: www.daphnahorowitz.com  LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/daphnahorowitz/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/daphna1231 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PEACSolutions/

We all have two things in common. We are born and we die. Somewhere between birth and death we all feel pain. Some of us feel more pain than other. Some of our closest family and friends can cause us more physical and psychological pain than they should. Pain hurts no matter what kind. We need to give ourself some self-love. Giving ourself self-love can help us to see the warning sings. See thing that does not feel right and get us ready to say NO! and step away. Listen, Organize, Act! Organizing & Democratic Politics

This episode discusses the work of the hugely influential political theorist, Hannah Arendt, and how it provides profound insights into the nature and purpose of both politics and democratic organizing. Arendt's books include the Origins of Totalitarianism, Eichmann in Jerusalem, The Human Condition, and On Revolution. These works, along with her numerous essays, are vital for understanding the politics both of her day and ours.  I discuss Arendt's understanding of politics, power, violence, and the resonance between Arendt's work and organizing with Leo Penta. If you know nothing about Arendt and her work, this episode is a great introduction. And if you are a veteran reader of Arendt, this episode opens up how Arendt's work connects to and is a key dialogue partner for existing forms of grassroots democratic politics.GuestLeo Penta is a Catholic priest, community organizer, and academic. His doctorate focused on Hannah Arendt's concept of power, a focus generated by his time as a community organizer in New York where he helped found the East Brooklyn Congregations (EBC) organizing coalition. He has continued to work as both a priest and organizer, first in the States and then, since 1996, in Germany.  While in the States, Penta spearheaded an effort of the Industrial Areas Foundation from 1990 to 1996 to develop “IAF Reflects”, an institute for reflection on organizing. The Institute conducted seminars with the participation of both well-known academics and renowned practitioners to deepen the theoretical base for the work of organizing. From 1996 to 2017 Leo Penta taught at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, developing a focus on community development. In conjunction with this, he developed the first community organizing initiative in Germany, called “Menschen verändern ihren Kiez/Organizing Schöneweide.” In 2006 he became the founding director of the German Institute for Community Organizing (DICO) which is dedicated to developing the practice of community organizing in Germany and training professional community organizers. He has continued to study Arendt's work and how it can help frame organizing throughout his career. Touch is our first sensation. It's a universal language. But as practitioners of East Asian medicine, we need to understand the importance of listening with our hands, of tapping into the power of intentional touch, and contacting our patients with awareness. Listening with the hands is the foundation of Sotai, Tuina, Shiatsu, and other bodywork modalities. In this conversation with Bob Quinn, we touch on the use of Yin Sotai as a gentle method of bodywork, including its foundational principles and the implementation of the treatment in the clinic. Bob also highlights the influence of mentor Peter Thompson, the connection of Yin Sotai and Jeffrey Dann's Koshi balancing protocol, the legacy of Dr. Hashimoto, and the philosophical genius of Buckminster Fuller.
