In this EP I speak with Ryan Donahue. Ryan is in his eighth year with the San Francisco 49ers as the team's Director of Reconditioning. An accomplished leader, physical therapist, performance coach, keynote speaker, and reconditioning specialist, Ryan utilizes his background in both medicine and strength and conditioning to lead the reconditioning process, returning players from injury to full athletic competition. Before joining the 49ers, Ryan spent the previous three years as a physical therapist at the Andrews Institute for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, FL where he provided rehabilitation for athletes in the NFL, NBA, MLB, Olympic Teams as well as US Special Forces and the general population. Prior to the Andrews Institute, Ryan received his doctorate in physical therapy from Northeastern University in 2012, while also serving as assistant director of strength & conditioning for the university's Sports Performance department. Jack Smith and Ryan Donahue sit down with Texas Rangers bench coach Donnie Ecker to talk about his hitting philosophy, the Giants vs. Dodgers rivalry, and the effects of analytics on baseball! Ecker, who joined the Rangers before the 2022 season, is one of the biggest up-and-coming names in the MLB coaching world. After retiring from his minor league career, Ecker coached for teams like the St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Angels, and Cincinnati Reds before being hired by the San Francisco Giants in 2020. After Ecker's arrival in the Bay Area, the Giants' offense exploded, culminating in a franchise record 107 win, 241 home run season in 2021. In 2022, he accepted a job with the Rangers as their bench coach and offensive coordinator and helped Texas' offense improve in his first season in Arlington. Across his young coaching career, Ecker has worked with some of the best hitters in baseball including Corey Seager, Buster Posey, Joey Votto, and many others! About The Happys: Upon release from a 14 month stint in the Marin County Jail, Nick Petty, lead singer and songwriter for Bay Area rock band, The Happys was instructed NOT to enter a bar or be around alcohol or drugs as part of his probation. Of course, Nick went ahead and booked a gig for his band at a local bar. As the band came on stage, the first person he noticed in the audience was his probation officer staring him down. The band tore through the set and after the show, the officer approached Nick with sweat rolling down her forehead from dancing and made an offer - she would let this go if he keeps playing his music. “you guys are really good!” She said. “You've got to keep it going!” “It was a wake-up call,” Nick explains. “I realized that jail was not where I saw myself going in my life. I wanted something to stop me from what I was doing, and jail did that. And when I got off drugs, I was able to nurture my creative side.” After the bar “incident,” Nick decided it was time to step things up with his band. He recruited local musician friend, Brett Brazil on bass, Alex Sanchez on guitar and Ryan Donahue on drums. They went to work building their fanbase by playing as many live shows as they could, never turning down a gig. They traveled to the Northwest and Southern California on shoestring tours, toured in support of the Mad Caddies, opened for Agent Orange, Del The Funky Homosapien, and played the main stage at San Francisco's Haight Street Fair.
