Is this a net positive or net negative for Michigan? Texas had bigger aspirations than the Cheeze-It Bowl as the Longhorns were the preseason No. 1 team. However, Texas played well down the stretch, winning six of seven games, and that included wins over Vanderbilt and Texas A&M. Michigan will be without its two best pass rushers in Derrick Moore and Jaishawn Barnham, as well as fifth-year starting offensive lineman Giovanni El-Hadi, Texas is without three All-American-level defenders in safety Michael Taafe, linebacker Anthony Hill and cornerback Malik Muhammad, in addition to key defensive linemen Trey Moore and Ethan Burke. On offense, the Longhorns will be without running back CJ Baxter and Jerrick Gibson as well as receiver DeAndre Moore. Steve Hogan is the CEO of Florida Citrus Sports which oversees both the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl and the Pop-Tarts Bowl (both played in Orlando, Florida). Both games are played at Orlando's Camping World Stadium which recently received an allocation of $400 million for renovations. The NFL Pro Bowl is returning to Orlando for the sixth time in eight years, and there is talk about playing a potential home game for the Jacksonville Jaguars and/or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Hogan was instrumental in introducing the world to the first edible mascot at the Pop-Tarts Bowl in December. Named “Strawberry,” the mascot was the hit of Bowl Season and showed how bowls are working to market themselves in different ways. The Pop-Tarts Bowl was honored with the Best Brand Activation Award at the prestigious Sports Business Journal Awards in May. He is a thought leader in college football and can talk about the upcoming season with new looks in the SEC and Big Ten (Citrus Bowl conference staples). The new 12-team College Football Playoff (CFP) starts this year, and there is fast momentum toward expanding to 14 teams soon (perhaps as early as 2026). It has been reported that the Rose Bowl is seeking to get out of the College Football Playoff semifinal rotation starting in 2026. Hogan addresses the state of the college football landscape as the 2024 season commences. Trump was the first choice of 51% of those surveyed. This brings Trump up eight percentage points from the October Iowa poll. Meanwhile, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis polled at 19% and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley polled at 16% in the new Iowa poll. No other candidates received more than five percent. Both DeSantis and Haley have made recent campaign stops in Iowa to increase their support. This evening, Trump will speak at the Hyatt Regency in Coralville. The first-in-the-nation Iowa Republican caucuses will be held on January 15th. You can find the latest campaign and election news at thegazette.com/elections.Williams Boulevard SW in Cedar Rapids was closed for about an hour Tuesday morning as firefighters responded to a kitchen fire at Long John Silver's restaurant. Firefighters were called at 8:19 a.m. to the restaurant located at 2630 Williams Boulevard SW. Crews were able to extinguish the fire in the kitchen area. No one was injured and the building was empty. The building sustained fire, smoke and water damage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.Marching bands will take the field for half time at the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl after all. Plans to only feature Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw at halftime have been reversed following a petition led by Hawkeye fans. Both the Hawkeye Marching Band and University of Tennesse's Pride of Southland band will perform on the field in Orlando before the New Year's game and at halftime. Hawkeye Marching Band Director Eric Bush told The Gazette, quote, “We are thankful to the Citrus Bowl and Gavin DeGraw for working together to help showcase our bands which are not only an important part of the game day experience but also our university's cultures and traditions.” end quote. Similar petitions have been assembled for the Cyclone Marching Band which is set to perform prior to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis. Memphis funk band Bar-Kays is set to perform at the halftime show. While the bands are focused on the upcoming bowl game performances, both the Hawkeye Marching Band and Cyclone Marching Band announced this week that they're among five division I colleges named as finalists for Metallica's marching band competition, which boasts a top prize worth $75,000.
