In this weekly recap, Amber Kuhn highlights financial history and strategic goal achievement. On Monday, Mark Higgins, author of "Investing in US Financial History," joined Matt to offer a profound perspective on understanding market dynamics through historical context. Mark emphasizes that true financial wisdom comes from understanding historical patterns without falling into the trap of believing "this time it's different." On Thursday, Jamie brought an equally transformative message about goal setting that goes far beyond typical motivational rhetoric. Her core philosophy cuts to the heart of personal and professional development: a goal without a plan is merely a wish. She challenges setting goals that are genuinely intimidating – ones that make you uncomfortable and push you beyond your comfort zone. The key, she argues, is not just in setting ambitious targets but in creating deliberate, specific action plans with clear responsibilities and deadlines. Most people rely only on their life experience to make investment decisions. This causes them to overlook cyclical forces that repeatedly reshape economies and markets. Investing in U.S. Financial History: Understanding the Past to Forecast the Future (Greenleaf, 2024) fills this void by recounting the comprehensive financial history of the United States of America. It begins with Alexander Hamilton's financial programs in 1790 and ends with the Federal Reserve's battle with inflation in 2023. Authored by Mark Higgins, an experienced investment advisor and financial historian, this book will help you: - Understand key drivers of financial crises and the principles for managing them. - Recognize warning signs of speculative manias that lead to asset bubbles. - Understand why few investors outperform market indices and why index funds are preferable for most individuals and institutions. - Identify the major threats to U.S. economic prosperity in the twenty-first century. Investing in U.S. Financial History reveals that there is almost no financial event that is unprecedented. By understanding the fundamental drivers underpinning key economic events, you will internalize investment principles, avoid common pitfalls, and resist the temptation to panic amid market volatility. Carley Garner, senior commodity strategist at DeCarley Trading, says in the "Talking Technicals" segment that she "sees some really big red flags waving," and that it will get rocky as the market backs away from being "extremely over-extended." She expects the market to take a turn for the worse, though she thinks election-year conditions may prop the market up and minimize the potential damage. Meanwhile, at the end of the show in the Big interview, Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer of Independent Advisor Alliance, says a pullback would be "completely normal," but he expects stocks to overcome a bumpy ride to finish the year up from here provided the economy can sidestep a recession. Also on the show, financial journalist Liz Weston of NerdWallet.com discusses her recent decision to retire and how she made a decision that proved difficult despite years of preparing for it, plus Mark Higgins discusses his new book, "Investing in U.S. Financial History: Understanding the Past to Forecast the Future."

The Donegal International Rally in 2006 was one of those special events with an entry list that included Colin McRae, Austin MacHale, Eugene Donnelly, Kevin Lynch, Tim McNulty, Gareth MacHale, Matthew Wilson and Derek McGarrity. Added to the mix that weekend was Andrew Nesbitt securing a deal to bring two ‘works' Mitsubishi Lancer WRC cars to compete on this iconic rally. As the rally unfolded, an epic battle took place between the two identical works Lancers driven by Andrew Nesbitt with James O'Brien co-driving and Mark Higgins with Rory Kennedy co-driving. A recent discovery in the Nesbitt household of the onboard videos from that weekend has allowed us to retell the tale of the 2006 Donegal International, with Andrew Nesbitt, James O'Brien and Graeme Nesbitt joining us on the Krunching Gears podcast for a special episode to revisit the memories from that fabulous 2006 weekend in Donegal. Unfortunately, there was no camera fitted on Friday. Full onboards from the majority of the stages on Saturday and all of Sunday have been preserved and are now available to view on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@gnesbitt1988 or search Andrew Nesbitt Donegal 2006 onboards We hope you enjoy this fantastic story of how the Donegal International Rally in 2006 unfolded for Andrew & James

Jason talks to Mark Higgins, Chief Analytics Officer and Co-Founder of Beacon. It is a company that provides cloud solutions to financial institutions to run their data and analytics and a number of other interesting and high-level things.Episode Highlights0.33: Beacon is a financial technology company focused on the capital markets. These are the sort of wholesale trading that happens in foreign exchange and commodities and interest rate derivatives.4.55: Mark had decided to start their trading and risk management system as a development platform that has all that enterprise technology stuff in it and so that quants and data scientists and people like that don't have to be experts at enterprise technology.8.00: The financial institutions have had a sort of 30 plus year history of on-premises data center computers and there is a particular kind of mental model that goes along with that.09.02: Mark shares how their product is this combination of two pieces. One of them is sort of an out-of-the-box set of trading and risk management applications and the second part of the platform is the developer environment where they can go and build their own tools.10.28: Mark says that they are very open with their underlying technology and development environment. Their clients get all of our source code, and they can write their own code in the environment. 12.02: In the early years of the company, Mark spent a lot of time being pretty reactive from a product perspective where basically their road map was whatever the next big prospects wanted them to build, and it kept changing all the time.12.35: Beacon is a big change for people. Jason talks about the implementation timeline for something like this for the people or companies.17.41: Institutions start using Beacon for one particular thing or whatever particular business problem they have and when their developers start using Beacon to build new stuff for the desk, then a new project comes up and they're like, why don't we just use Beacon for this, says Mark.3 Key PointsOne thing where Mark helps people with Beacon is how to use the cloud in the right way because beacons sort of automates all the cloud infrastructure management in the elastic compute stuff.Beacon came into the market after 4 iterations Mark shares how he ended up having to modify and adapt this product that he didn't expect initially.Beacon gives you a lot more flexibility in doing the kind of ad hoc analysis because you have access to elastic computing, says Mark.Tweetable Quotes"The quant has outsourced the most important thing that any developer can do, which deploys your change into production." – Mark"The thing that we didn't properly understand about selling to big institutions is that it's really hard to sell to them when you're a little company." – Mark"I just love the idea of helping the whole industry to get more efficient and productive through using better tools." - MarkResources MentionedFacebook – Jason Pereira's FacebookLinkedIn – Jason Pereira's LinkedInWoodgate.com – Sponsorhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-higgins-63b0264/https://www.beacon.io/ Hosted on Acast. This episode with Mark Higgins was inspiring! The turning point for Mark came in 2020 when he realized that day trading so much was taking time away from his family. He wanted to find an investment that would take less of his time. After doing some research, he decided he wanted to invest out of state. He found roofstock.com and discovered that they would provide an all inclusive service to help him as a new investor. He purchased 4 properties in St. Louis on Roofstock within 6 months. After buying his first few properties, Mark decided to use a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) to buy more properties. He started taking on more risk by using the BRRR strategy. He was able to find a good team of contractors to help him get his projects done and to find great deals. His plans for the future include buying large apartment complexes. Currently he has 8 doors with more on the way.In this episode we talk about the BRRR strategy, using Roofstock, the St. Louis market and more. How to find himIG- @markbosonHighlights1) Get started with the information you have. Your strategy may not always remain the same, but getting started will expose you to more possibilities.2) BRRR is a great strategy but you must know what you're doing. You need a great team of contractors, wholesalers, realtors, banks etc. 3) Don't waste your contractor's time. Make sure you know your criteria so you're not having them give you estimates for properties you don't want to buy. Don't nickel and dime good contractors. Access all of our resources on our website- https://www.blackrealestatedialogue.com/linksJoin the B.R.E.D. Join Howie and Michelle as they welcome Mark Higgins! In 2006, Mark had an encounter with what he believed to be a ghost or a shadow person. Combining that event with his earlier life experiences helped set the stage for his journey into investigating the other side. After his encounter, Mark had questions: "Who or what was that? What do they want? Why are they here?” From that point on, he began investigating reported haunted locations in hopes that he would one day find answers to his questions. Mark joined "The R.I.P. Files" team in 2010 and he is grateful to be part of such a diverse group of people with such different backgrounds, all of whom are devoted to learning everything they can about the mysteries of the afterlife. Mark currently resides in Charlottesville, Virginia with his wife, two sons, and two cats. In his spare time, he enjoys working out, going to the movies, and spending time with his family. Happy National Walking Month! Living Streets is the national charity that stands up for pedestrians. This is the second in our special series of podcasts to celebrate National Walking Month, our annual campaign dedicated to celebrating and raising awareness of the benefits of walking. http://www.livingstreets.co.uk/national-walking-month The month focuses on how walking can take you to more than just a destination – it can take you to a clearer head, more family time, hidden treasures in your neighbourhood, a fatter wallet from savings on petrol or public transport, and a healthier environment. Each of the podcasts in this series will focus on a different benefit. As we get some healthy competition going in the run up to Walk to Work Week from 12-16 May, we’ll be investigating in this episode how walking can take you to better shape. In this second podcast, we’ll be meeting some of the people who’ve been getting into better shape through walking. We’ll meet Mark Higgins, who discovered that walking was a great way to both get to work and shed some extra pounds when he took part in Walk to Work Week 2013 – and learn what happened when he took it up longer term. We’ll meet Angie, part of a walking group in Doncaster, which was set up five years ago as part of a Living Streets project and has kept up the habit to this day. And we’ll be chatting through some of our stats expert Tim Fitches’ favourite facts and figures about walking and how it can improve your physical health. #walkthismay #WalktoWork #WalktoSchool
