She has worked with numerous publishers: Urban Christian, Kimani Romance, Abingdon Press and Whitaker House. She is currently working on promoting The American Queen with Thomas Nelson (HarperCollins). The American Queen by Vanessa Miller In 1869 a kingdom rose in the South. And Louella was its queen. Over the twenty-four years she was enslaved on the Montgomery Plantation, Louella learned to feel one thing: hate. Hate for the man who sold her mother. Hate for the overseer who left her daddy to hang from a noose. Hate so powerful there's no room in her heart for love, not even for the honorable Reverend William, whom she likes and respects enough to marry. But when William finally listens to Louella's pleas and leads the formerly enslaved people off the plantation, Louella begins to replace her hate with hope. Hope that they will find a place where they can live free from fear. Hope that despite her many unanswered prayers, she can learn to trust for new miracles. Soon, William and Louella become the appointed king and queen of their self-proclaimed Kingdom of the Happy Land. Though they are still surrounded by opposition, they continue to share a message of joy and goodness and fight for the freedom and dignity of all. Featured Stories– The Eastern Iowa Airport will pay $1.1M to buy property with PFAS in groundwater– Northern Iowa faculty seek end to general fund support for athletics– Iowa man arrested in fatal stabbing of a Nebraska priestEpisode TranscriptYou are listening to The Gazette's Daily News Podcast on Tuesday, December 12, 2023. This is this podcast where you get quick bites from the latest headlines coming out of The Gazette newsroom. I'm Bailey Cichon filling in for Stephen Schmidt. Eastern Iowa Airport will pay $1.1 million to buy a property with PFAS contamination in the groundwater. This agreement resolves after two years of negotiations after property owners learned that the water from their well had PFAS level 3.5 times more than a lifetime limit set by the federal government at that time. PFAS stands for per-and polyflourinated substances. PFAS can be found in man-made chemicals, like the firefighting foam firefighters at EAstern Iowa Airport used to contain fuel fires. On Monday, the Airport Commission unanimously approved resolutions to buy 3400 Walford Road from Paul and Nikki Hynek, who will continue to rent a house on the property. The couple agreed not to hold the airport liable for the PFAS contamination. According to the purchase agreement, the airport paid to ahve a new, deeper well drilled on the property last year. The airport also supplied bottled water to the Hyneks for two years. For the full story, read the article by Erin Jordan at thegazette.com. According to reporting by The Gazette's Vanessa Miller, UNI has given nearly $4.3 million of the campus's general university funds to athletics in the 2023 budget year. This was almost $1 million more than planned. In fiscal year 2022, UNI sent $3.5 million to athletics, which adds up to $7.8 million in total over the past 2 years. Now, faculty is urging UNI Athletics to become self-supporting like its counterparts at University of Iowa and Iowa State University. United Faculty President and jouranlism professor Christopher Martin said the millions of dollars funneled annually to athletics would help the university's mission. Quote, “On the academic side, we're really just cut to the bone. We have so many faculty lines that we need to have filled and replaced.” end quote.Spokesman Pete Moris said although UNI administrators agree that academics, student success and faculty are key to UNI's mission, athletics play an important role in driving applications, admissions and donations. Moris said UNI administration hears its faculty members and quote, “one of the ongoing directives for our athletics department is to generate more revenue and to identify additional opportunities for our athletics department to be more self-sustaining.” end quote. UI President Barbara Wilson has not responded to questions about UI Athletic Director Gary Barta's employment. The $4.2 million settlement was announced earlier this week. In a statement, UI head football coach Kirk Ferentz said he was disappointed in the decision to settle. Ferentz said, quote, “In fact, the parties originally named disagree with the decision to settle, fully believing that the case would have been dismissed with prejudice before trial.” For more details on the settlement, look for Vanessa Miller's article at thegazette.com.Eastern Iowa's traditional Irish band Coppers & Brass will play its final concert on St. Patrick's Day at The James Theater in Iowa City. The University of Iowa and Board of Regents will settle a lawsuit that claims the Hawkeye football program and its coaches further a culture of racism and harassment. In 2020, seven former players accused the program and its coaches of discriminating against players, using derogatory terms and creating a racially-hostile environment. Now, the UI and Board of Regents have agreed to pay $4.175 million to settle the lawsuit. According to the proposed settlement, the state would pay $2 million of that from its general fund. State Auditor Rob Sand opposes spending that state money “unless (UI Athletics Director) Gary Barta is no longer employed at the university and forfeits any severance or similar pay.” Sand said this is the fourth discrimination case against the UI Athletics Department in under nine years which resulted in nearly $11 million in settlements under Barta. The Gazette's Vanessa Miller broke down the settlement payments and recent developments. Find Miller's article at thegazette.com. In other news, Big Grove Brewery has awarded $32,000 in grants to four Iowa nonprofits. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Iowa, Central Iowa Shelter Services, the Free Lunch Program of Iowa City and Iowa City Coralville Boxing Club will be awarded $8,000 each. Big Grove Brewery's Director of Communications Janelle Buxton said, “We know $8,000 isn't much to some, but to others, it could make or break their operating budgets for the year. Whatever we do, we want to make a significant contribution to their project or program.” Because Big Grove's next location is under construction in Cedar Rapids, Linn County nonprofits will be eligible for grants in the next cycle. For more information, read Elijah Decious's story at thegazette.com.Finally, a look at today's weather. Expect partly sunny skies with a high near 47 and a low of 32. Winter weather may return to Cedar Rapids as there's a 20% chance of snow after midnight. Winds will reach as high as 30mph.Thank you for listening to The Gazette's Daily News Podcast. AJ and Vanessa Miller have offered a Christmas wonderland at their home at 163 Antiqua Drive for the past 7 years, decorating their yard with a plethora of Christmas lights, nutcrackers, and other Christmas splendor. Thousands of people have walked through Reindeer Lane on the way to Santa's Workshop, passing Santa's Magical Mailbox where children mail their letters to Santa. Santa and Mrs. Claus personally welcome visitors on the weekends. On other days of the week, the Millers are joined by the Grinch and his sidekick, Max, who join in the spirit of Christmas. AJ and Vanessa Miller have welcomed visitors to their home at 163 Antigua Drive in Lafayette for the past seven years. On weekends, Santa and Mrs. Claus greet their guests and offer hot cocoa and popcorn to all. There is no charge to experience this Winter Wonderland. The Millers originally began this tradition when hosting a holiday party for Vanessa's coworkers. They bought two 6-foot tall nutcrackers and a Christmas-themed sign, and AJ donned a Santa suit for the family-friendly party. When they saw up close the love the children had for Santa, "that was the spark that ignited the flame." The first time AJ put on the Santa suit, a little boy ran up to him, looked at him with his big brown eyes, and said, "Santa, I love you" and gave him the biggest hug ever. AJ realized what big shoes he wore and became determined to be the best Santa he could be. He wants to continue to spread that joy to children and adults alike. Similarly, Vanessa shared her motivation for holding the annual Wonderland. The couple wasn't fortunate enough to have children, so this is their opportunity to enjoy Christmas and see it through the eyes of children. "To see that look in the children's eyes is what inspires me," she says. You see that inner child come out in the adults. You should see the faces when Santa asks Mom and Dad what they want for Christmas," AJ chimed in. AJ Miller at his home at 163 Antigua Drive. Photo by Leslie Westbrook of The Acadiana Advocate. Both enjoyed driving with their parents to view Christmas lights when they were children. AJ was particularly inspired by Dr. Jack Gani's display of lights and decorations on Colonial Drive in White Subdivision which was a destination for Lafayette sightseers. But that experience took place in the car; the Millers wanted to provide a place where kids could immerse themselves in the experience. Vanessa explained how this has become their Christmas "Field of Dreams....if you can dream it and believe it, it's gonna happen." She keeps a vision board in her head and works to make the experience bigger and better every year. AJ said, "If you can dream it, I'll build it." They are still on the upswing as to what it will eventually be. The Millers can't do this alone and they are grateful for friends and neighbors who volunteer to assist. It takes many, many elves to conduct this operation, and guests are greeted by "parking elves' who help direct traffic, and elves who serve popcorn and hot cocoa on the weekends. Of course, there are elves who facilitate photo-taking so that every family member can be in the photo.....these photos are known as "Elfies!" The Millers offer an experience with memories that last a lifetime. It has become a part of many families' Christmas tradition, with guests bringing their cats, dogs, and even iguanas. The youngest visitor to date was a two-week-old. The last day to mail your letter to Santa is December 23. Elves bring children's letters to the North Pole and Santa responds to each and every letter. Each year a special attraction is added. On weekends, guests are privileged to visit the Miller's back yard where Dr. Seuss's Whoville is set up for photo opportunities. In the front yard, you can visit the North Pole and be greeted by a 10 foot polar bear named "Arthur" after AJ's dad. Also hailing from the North Pole is this year's new addition,
