Passage: 10 Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. 11 And he came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. 12 And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! 13 And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. 14 Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. 15 Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” 16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” 17 And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” 18 So early in the morning Jacob took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. 19 He called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at the first. Passage: 22 One of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet 23 and begged him earnestly, “My little daughter is dying. Come and lay your hands on her so that she can get well and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd was following and pressing against him. 25 Now a woman suffering from bleeding for twelve years 26 had endured much under many doctors. She had spent everything she had and was not helped at all. On the contrary, she became worse. 27 Having heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his clothing. 28 For she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I'll be made well.” 29 Instantly her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was healed of her affliction. 30 Immediately Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and said,“Who touched my clothes? ” 31 His disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing against you, and yet you say,‘Who touched me? ' ” 32 But he was looking around to see who had done this. 33 The woman, with fear and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. 34 “Daughter,” he said to her,“your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be healed from your affliction.” 35 While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue leader's house and said, “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the teacher anymore? ” 36 When Jesus overheard what was said, he told the synagogue leader, “Don't be afraid. Only believe.” 37 He did not let anyone accompany him except Peter, James, and John, James's brother. 38 They came to the leader's house, and he saw a commotion — people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them,“Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep.” 40 They laughed at him, but he put them all outside. He took the child's father, mother, and those who were with him, and entered the place where the child was. 41 Then he took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum” (which is translated,“Little girl, I say to you, get up” ). 42 Immediately the girl got up and began to walk. (She was twelve years old.) At this they were utterly astounded. 43 Then he gave them strict orders that no one should know about this and told them to give her something to eat. -- Mark 5:22-43 (CSB) Song: Counting Every Blessing (https://open.spotify.com/track/0lATXmstYwzQjOLgkzvnEc?si=f408d841eb2e4fd4) by Chris Llewellyn and Gareth Gilkeson Lyrics: I was blind now I'm seeing in colour I was dead now I'm living forever I had failed but You were my Redeemer I've been blessed beyond all measure I was lost now I'm found by the Father I've been changed from a ruin to treasure I've been given a hope and a future I've been blessed beyond all measure I am counting every blessing Counting every blessing Letting go and trusting When I cannot see I am counting every blessing Counting every blessing Surely every season You are good to me Oh You are good to me Oh You are good to me You were there in the valley of shadows You were there in the depth of my sorrows You're my strength my hope for tomorrow I've been blessed beyond all measure Surely Your goodness pursues me Surely Your heart is still for me I will remember Your mercies All my days Through every storm and gale For Your goodness I will ever praise You Oh You are good to me Oh You are good to me Abbreviated Passage: Prayer: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name; your kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. It's a bold move, and one the lead singer of Rend Collective knows will be controversial in some circles. Nevertheless, the songwriter of some of the Church's most well known worship songs, including 'Build Your Kingdom Here' and 'My Lighthouse' is releasing a record which touches on themes of doubt, mystery and even abuse in the church. In this in depth interview Chris Llewellyn explains he's not leaving the much-loved joy-centred collective, but wanted to explore other themes which are rarely touched on within Christian music. The result is Honest, an 11 track record which sees Llewellyn experiment with new musical styles and deliver challenging and thought provoking lyrics. Hear sneak peaks from the record as Chris opens up about his experiences of depression, suffering and celebrity culture in this conversation with Premier Christianity's Sam Hailes.

This time on Cleaning Up, Michael hosts Professor Sir Chris Llewellyn Smith, one of the UK's greatest living physicists, for a fascinating and detailed dive into the UK's energy storage requirements as it moves towards a fully carbon-free grid. Sir Chris is Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Oxford, and a former Director-General of CERN. At CERN he steered the funding and commissioning of its Large Hadron Collider, and as a theoretical particle physicist, Sir Chris predicted the existence of the very particle - the Higgs Boson - that the Large Hadron Collider went on to help discover. Sir Chris is likely the only person ever to have been knighted for "services to particle physics." In the last few years Sir Chris has been busy leading a forthcoming Royal Society study on large-scale energy storage as part of the net-zero transition. He and Michael discuss the significance of storage to a newly configured, renewable grid, the likely cost of stored electricity, and the role of salt caverns in hosting hydrogen stores. Relevant Guest & Topic Links Sir Chris discussed the energy storage requirements of a net-zero UK at a virtual conference in March 2020. Chris was Director of Energy Research at Oxford from 2011 to 2017, Director of the UK's fusion programme (2003-2009), Provost and President of University College London (1998-2001), Director General of CERN (1994-1998) when the Large Hadron Collider was approved and construction started, and was the first Chairman of Oxford Physics (1987-1992). Chris holds a BA in Physics with First Class Honours from the University of Oxford, as well as a D.Phil in Theoretical Physics. He holds honorary doctorates from universities in the UK, Spain, Canada and China. He was knighted in 2001 for “services to particle physics.” He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and was awarded their Royal Medal in 2015. Chris captained Oxford's cross-country running team as an undergraduate in 1963. After completing his doctorate in 1967, Chris worked briefly in the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.
Opening Song: Joy of the Lord by Chris Llewellyn, Ed Cash, and Gareth Gilkeson Lyrics: Though the tears may fall my song will rise My song will rise to You Though my heart may fail my song will rise My song will rise to You While there's breath in my lungs I will praise You Lord In the dead of night I'll lift my eyes I'll lift my eyes to You When the waters rise I'll lift my eyes I'll lift my eyes to You While there's hope in this heart I will praise You Lord The joy of the Lord is my strength The joy of the Lord is my strength In the darkness I'll dance In the shadows I'll sing The joy of the Lord is my strength When I cannot see You with my eyes Let faith arise to You When I cannot feel Your hand in mine Let faith arise to You God of mercy and love I will praise You Lord Oh You shine with glory Lord of light I feel alive with You In Your presence now I come alive I am alive with You There is strength when I say I will praise You Lord When sorrow comes my way You are the shield around me Always You remain My courage in the fight I hear You call my name Jesus I am coming Walking on the waves reaching for Your light Passage: Nehemiah 8:1-12 And all the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the Lord had commanded Israel. 2 So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, on the first day of the seventh month. 3 And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law. 4 And Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that they had made for the purpose. And beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah on his right hand, and Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam on his left hand. 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people, and as he opened it all the people stood. 6 And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground. 7 Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites,[a] helped the people to understand the Law, while the people remained in their places. 8 They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly,[b] and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading. This Day Is Holy 9 And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, “This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn or weep.” For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law. 10 Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” 11 So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved.” 12 And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them. Musical Reflection: Harp meditation No. 1 by Gretchen Kirby Reflection Notes: A repetitive pattern in the left hand provides a meditative foundation while the right hand experiments with ascending lines. The tune is meant to be joyful and evoke delight. Prayer: This is another day, O Lord. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen.
Opening Song: We Three Kings (We're Not Lost) (https://open.spotify.com/track/01VfOAULI3141eMeSLJe2I?si=406bf7a529aa4382) by Ben Cantelon, Chris Llewellyn, Gareth Gilkeson Lyrics: We three kings of orient are Bearing gifts we traverse afar Field and fountain moor and mountain Following yonder star Born a king on Bethlehem's plain Gold I bring to crown him again King forever ceasing never Over us all to reign O star of wonder star of night Star with royal beauty bright Westward leading still proceeding Guide us to thy perfect light Frankincense and myrrh I bring See him there our Savior and king Heaven sings alleluia Alleluia the earth will sing In the dark we're not lost When it's hard we're not lost Don't lose heart We're never truly lost Passage: 1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: 6 “‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'” 7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. (Matthew 2:1–12 ESV) Musical Reflection: Of the Father's Love Begotten (DIVINUM MYSTERIUM) Reflection Notes: This meterless hymn flows freely, a clear indicator of its plainchant origins. The rich text by Marcus Aurelius Clemens Prudentius was a response to the Council of Nicea in the early Church; it establishes belief in the Trinity and Christ's nature as fully man and fully God. Prayer: O God, by the leading of a star you manifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth: Lead us, who know you now by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. No, I tell you, but rather division. 52 For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” 54 He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming.' And so it happens. 55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,' and it happens. 56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? (Luke 12:49–56 ESV) Musical Reflection: All to Jesus I Surrender (SURRENDER) by Winfield S. Weeden Reflection Notes: This tune was originally intended to have two-part harmonies on the verse and four-part harmonies of the refrain; the additional harmonic fullness adds to the repeated emphasis of the words “I surrender all.” Prayer: Lord God, open my heart and illuminate it with the grace of your Holy Spirit. By this grace may I always seek to do what is pleasing to you; direct my thoughts and feelings so that I may at last come to the unending joys of heaven. Thus on earth may I keep your commandments, and so be worthy of your everlasting reward. -Bede

Amen.
Opening Song: We Three Kings (We're Not Lost) by Ben Cantelon, Chris Llewellyn, Gareth Gilkeson Lyrics: We three kings of orient are Bearing gifts we traverse afar Field and fountain moor and mountain Following yonder star Born a king on Bethlehem's plain Gold I bring to crown him again King forever ceasing never Over us all to reign O star of wonder star of night Star with royal beauty bright Westward leading still proceeding Guide us to thy perfect light Frankincense and myrrh I bring See him there our Savior and king Heaven sings alleluia Alleluia the earth will sing In the dark we're not lost When it's hard we're not lost Don't lose heart We're never truly lost Passage: 1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? Amen.

Chris Llewellyn was excited to come over and NOT talk about music. I met him years ago when I worked closely for a season with his band, Rend Collective. That crew is easily the hardest working bunch of musicians I’ve ever met, and quarantine, while not great for business, has given Chris some time to breathe deep and take a little break for a bit. It was fun to catch up and talk about Chris’s journey from the coast of Northern Ireland to a vagabond life across America to being (somewhat) settled here in Nashville with his wife and young son. He’s also in super freaking good shape and we got to talk about how that happens, which seems to remain a mystery to me. Chris is both a deep well and a hilarious dude and it was wonderful to have this chat. Rend Collective’s new EP “Socially Distant Worship Club Pt 1” is out now. Click here for Chris’s instagram page. In episode 112 we are honored to be joined by Chris Llewellyn from Rend Collective of Northern Ireland to talk about the importance of choosing to worship despite our circumstance. We recorded this episode a few days before the Coronavirus hit the United States hard, and since then, our entire world has changed. Despite what we didn't know, this episode comes at exactly the right time. With millions of people unemployed and hundreds of thousands infected and dying, now more than ever, we need to worship. "Life is hard. Worship will not always or even usually be our default setting...but like a pilot encountering dangerous landing conditions, when these storms gather over us we have to switch off autopilot, wrestle back the controls and manually, intentionally choose worship. Because God is still worthy in the valley. He is good when life is not. And that’s the anchor of our souls." -Chris Llewellyn from Rend Collective Don't miss this powerful episode as we unpack what it takes to worship in the valley, and talk about the heart behind their new album, “Choose to Worship” out now! "This album is an invitation into the spiritual discipline that we have been living as a community of building altars of praise in the darkness, trusting that whether or not the dawn comes, worship is still our sacred duty - and privilege. We hope this album gives you a vocabulary so that you can sing from the shackles, lift an anthem of defiance against your circumstances, and raise a shout of joy that demoralizes the enemy in his attempts to silence you. We hope that nothing will ever steal your song. We hope that you will join us in choosing worship." -Rend Collective If you like what you hear, please leave us a review! Sir Chris Llewellyn Smith chats to Jim Al-Khalili about quarks, bosons, and running the biggest experiments in history. In the late 60s and early 70s Chris was one of the theoretical physicists who were busy sketching what would become known as the standard model of particle physics. An early believer in the physical reality of the "Quark Model", Chris's work helped confirm that the protons and neutrons at the centre of atoms are themselves made up of 3 quarks. He was also influential in showing that Peter Higgs' theory of mass was not just sufficient, but also necessary. So when later he was made Director General of CERN, he was well placed to know, and to explain to the heads of the member states, that investing in the construction of something called the Large Hadron Collider would be a scientifically fruitful thing to do. Indeed, it has been said that there would be no LHC without Chris' calm international scientific diplomacy. Since then, Chris has been influential in several other international big-physics collaborations, including the world's most ambitious nuclear fusion programme, ITER.
Walking Through a River of Fire: 100 Years of Triangle Fire Poetry On March 25, 1911, a fire swept through the Triangle Shirtwaist Company. The owners had locked the doors. Within the hour 146 immigrant workers—mostly women--were dead. The Triangle fire galvanized a national social justice movement to protect workers' health and to build unions. The poetry in this anthology have already won major American poetry prizes: Chris Llewellyn's book on the Whitman Award for Poetry, Mary Fell's won the National Poetry Series. These poems brilliantly capture this major turning point in 20th century American history. These poets recapture the lives of immigrant women and of women workers and inscribe an American tragedy into literature. Over the last 100 years a huge literature of poems, dramas, and fiction has been written about the Triangle factory fire tragedy. This book is the first anthology ever of this important literature. This event features Julia Stein, editor/poet/anti-sweatshop activist; Lee Boek, writer, actor, activist, and artistic director of Public Works Improvisational Theatre project, and Lynne Bronstein, who has written four books of poetry--Astray From Normalcy, Roughage, Thirsty in the Ocean, and Border Crossing. THIS EVENT WAS RECORDED LIVE AT SKYLIGHT BOOKS MARCH 18, 2011
