172: Princess Kate's cancer announcement video draws skepticism and bot defenders

Introduction: Minutes 0 to 6:00 I met our Celebitchy Zoom group in person! I talk about my friend's tiny dog. Chandra had an encounter with a Great Dane. Royals: Minutes 6:00 to 24:00 Our last episode, #171, was two weeks ago. We had just seen the video of Princess Kate revealing that she had cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy. We were hit with over a hundred comments from new accounts all saying variations of the same thing right after that video was released. Christopher Bouzy has called out the bots on Twitter. The NY Times published an article in early 2020 about the then-Cambridges buying Instagram bot followers. In podcast #170 we talked about the Mother's Day frankenphoto. Major photo and news agencies issued a kill order for that photo. In light of that, and the very bizarre and obviously not Kate market video released by the Sun and TMZ, some people have questioned the video of Kate announcing her cancer. We wonder what's happening and Chandra has no theories. The video was filmed by BBC studios and we haven't heard many details about it. There were thinkpieces in the Washington Post and the NYT about the conspiracies. Getty images put editor's notes on the photo and video and refused to comment further about it. Last week one of the biggest royal stories was about how the Middletons are so broke they didn't even pay the insolvency firm that restructured their business, Party Pieces, when they sold it and went into bankruptcy. It's clear that the press has been given the go-ahead to go after the Middletons. There were multiple stories about this. Uncle Gary's appearance on Celebrity Big Brother underlined that the Middletons are broke. The British press always invents some new thing the Sussexes have to go to. There's a ceremony for Invictus's anniversary in May in London. England also wants to host Invictus in 2027, but hopefully Harry will not fall for that. Charles is also said to have invited the Sussexes to Balmoral this summer. Other major stories are about how the monarchy is now way too slimmed-down and how Beatrice and Eugenie need to be working royals to pick up the slack. We're also hearing BS about how Meghan supposedly got between Kate and Harry because they were so close before Meghan came around, which sounds like royal fan fiction. Harry wrote in Spare that he barely saw William and Kate. Harry has a wife whom he adores and this storyline is offensive. I like what Chandra wrote about the press in her piece about Peter Philips being unlucky in love. The palace comms departments are quiet and the royal rota has been left to make up storylines. We also heard that William was seen at a pub in Norfolk with Carole Middleton! Comments of the Week: Minutes 24:00 to end Chandra's COTW is from Brassy Rebel on the post about Beatrice and Eugenie covering Hello. My COTW is from Samuel Whiskers on the post about loofahs harboring bacteria. Thanks for listening bitches!

[This blog will always be free to read, but it's also how I pay my bills. So, if you like what you read, please consider a paid subscription.]The Junk Drawer is back! This is a feature of my blog I intended to do regularly when I began it last year, and things just got terribly busy with the midterms. So, it's become one of my goals this year to reignite the feature. It's about odds and ends: random musings, things I'm reading and watching, stuff I found interesting, and updates on my work.Enjoy! The Ballad of the Nosey BalloonThe surveillance balloon fiasco over the past week has been embarrassing for pretty much everyone involved. Embarrassing for China in their clumsy espionage and laughable response. Embarrassing for the U.S. government in the revelation that, apparently, several of these were tracked during the Trump Administration, and Trump declined to do anything about them. Embarrassing for political media's inability to clarify the situation for Americans, instead leaning into a framing of partisan jousting.Per usual, on matters of national security, the smartest voices seem to be the peripheral of cable news. I found this Twitter thread by NatSec expert William Kim particularly insightful. If nothing else, with the successful shoot-down of the balloon by an air-to-air missile from an F-22 Raptor (the first such recorded kill by the fighter jet model), notch this as a victory in President Biden's war on inflation. Another Award Show You Probably Don't Care About But Here's Why You ShouldThe 65th Annual Grammy Awards are being broadcast this evening. Most of you probably don't care about it. I will admit that I love awards shows; from the fashion to the high drama, I find them delicious. But this year's Grammys have a particularly sharp significance. Beyoncé leads with nine nominations for her album Renaissance, an instant cultural landmark that is widely considered her most complete record. It also lifted her to 88 career nominations, tying her with husband Jay-Z for the most Grammy nominations by an artist ever. And with 28 Grammy wins under her belt already, she's the most awarded singer in the Academy's history. Here's the problem: Beyoncé rarely wins the big general awards (Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year). She's been previously nominated six times for Record of the Year, winning none; five times for Song of the Year, winning once; and most glaringly, three times for Album of the Year as a lead artist and once as a featured artist, winning none. She wasn't even nominated for Best New Artist during her time with Destiny's Child or after her solo debut, which was a stunning critical and commercial success. The Grammys have always been suspect, and there's long been debate over how much critical favor is weighed against sales and certifications. What makes Beyoncé a point of considerable debate is that she's been consistently both: highly praised for her artistry and highly lucrative as an entertainer. Her Album of the Year losses have occurred in years in which she found near-universal favor among reviewers and near-universal adulation among listeners. So, which is it? That's not to say the artists to whom she lost were undeserving, but it's become a highly suspect pattern in which Beyoncé releases a beloved album that's critically and commercially successful, only to lose to a white artist whose album would not be assessed similarly, at least to that degree.Tonight, if Beyoncé doesn't win at least one of the three major awards, there's gonna be a lot of understandable chatter about misogynoir among Academy voters. What I'm Reading“The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams” by Stacy Schiff — One of the most interesting biographies I've read in a while. Schiff has a hell of a bibliography, with classics like “Vera (Mrs. Vladimir Nabokov)” (winner of the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography) and “The Witches: Salem, 1692”, and her latest work on forgotten founding father Sam Adams is thoroughly fascinating. (https://bit.ly/SamAdamsBook)“Dyscalculia: A Love Story of Epic Miscalculation” by Camonghne Felix — I was lucky enough to score an advance copy of Felix' latest work, set for release this Valentine's Day. She won rave reviews for “Build Yourself a Boat” (2017), which was longlisted for the National Book Award, among other recognitions. She's one of those writers that makes me wanna write. (preorder here: https://bit.ly/PreorderDyscalculia)“Master of the Senate” by Robert A. Caro — This is the second time I've read Caro's third work in the LBJ biography quintet (the fifth part, we are told, will eventually be published when he's damn good and ready). If you want to understand how the Senate got to be so thoroughly complicated and counterproductive (to put it mildly), Caro's history of the chamber is, alone, worth reading this. It's a big one, I won't lie. You'll need to dedicate at least a few weeks to it. But the understanding you'll glean about American politics is indispensable. What I'm Watching“Fleishman Is in Trouble” (Hulu) — Adapted from the book of the same name by Taffy Brodesser-Akner (who also executive produces). It's a great miniseries. Lizzy Kaplan and Claire Danes give exceptional performances, and the writing is brilliant. It's a bit dark but in the best way.“The Last of Us” (HBO) — I'll be real with you: as much as I love Pedro Pascal, I wasn't especially motivated to start watching this. I've kinda had my fill with post-apocalyptic narratives. But then, the third episode, centered around guest actors Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett, was released last weekend to rave reviews, so I finally watched it. I'm glad I did. The love story between these two men is one of the finest episodes of television I've ever seen. Absolutely brilliant. “80 for Brady” (Paramount) — Oh god, I so wanted to hate this damn movie. Metro Weekly offered to pay me to review it, and when I realized it would give me a chance to trash Tom Brady, I gladly accepted their commission. And then, must to my surprise, I quite enjoyed it. Ugh, I hate it when that happens. To read my review, click here. What I'm WritingThe week before last, I published this essay on an interview Pope Francis did with the Associated Press, in which he called for homosexuality to be decriminalized. My take is this simple: it's very good news when a global religious figure takes an LGBTQ-affirming stance, especially right now, and it should be encouraged. Last week, I wrote a satirical article about Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announcing a statewide ban on Pink Floyd. I honestly thought it was a bit over-the-top and wouldn't gain much attention. I was wrong. It went super viral. It's one of the most widely-read pieces I've written for my blog, mostly because a lot of folks readily believed that DeSantis would do something like this. In fact, it gained so much traction that Snopes published an article in response, confirming that its satire. And, of course, the aforementioned review of “80 for Brady,” which you should definitely read. Where I'm Gonna Be3/2/23: “Gabrielle Blair, In Conversation with Charlotte Clymer” at D.C.'s historic Sixth & I Synagogue — When my friend Gabrielle Blair asked me to join her for a one-on-one discussion on her bestselling book “Ejaculate Responsibly: A Whole New Way to Think About Abortion,” I thought I might be dreaming. For those who aren't in D.C., Sixth & I is considered one of the premiere venues for book events. 142: Meghan's fabulous life before she met Harry, Harry & Meghan's Netflix series is incredible, Earthshot was like a parody

Introduction: Minutes 0 to 2:30 I've been sick and you can hear it in my voice. It reminds Chandra of Polly Draper from 30 Something. We'll have an episode out next week and will be off the 24th and 31st for the holiday. Royals: Minutes 2:30 to 27:00 Will and Kate didn't even invite the nominees to the Earthshot Awards, which seemed like a parody. The celebrities attended in person though. This is especially hypocritical because there were stories in the British press about how the Waleses were so much better than the Sussexes and how William calls the Sussexes the Kardashians. This would have been a great opportunity to have the scientists get together and network. We got to see Harry and Meghan at the Ripple of Hope Awards, where they were honored for their activism. Meghan was wearing a beautiful sleek white off the shoulder Louis Vuitton gown with sleek hair. She just glowed. We remember her Salute to Freedom Gown because it was shown on the Harry and Meghan docuseries. We got the first three episodes of Harry & Meghan on Netflix and we've both watched them. Liz Garbus did a great job with their story. Most of it was known to us already but it's a great recap of their story and I was blown away by how well it was told. Chandra wishes it had come out earlier. We're not the audience for this series, people who have a passing interest in them are. We hope Omid Scobie is in the second half and we've heard that Christopher Bouzy is in it. We liked how much of Meghan's background pre-Harry the series covered. Meghan was so successful, fun and cool before she met her future husband. The British media has attacked Meghan for not having family other than her mother at her wedding, but the royals told her not to invite her favorite niece, Samantha's daughter Ashleigh, with whom she was close. That was new information to us. We were so impressed by Meghan's mom Doria. We liked how Samantha and Meghan's dad Tom were covered briefly and dismissed. We learned that Thomas's story about being yelled at by Harry on the phone was a lie because all he did was text with Meghan and it didn't even sound like him. We liked the section that put the racist treatment of Meghan into context with Brexit, the commonwealth and anti-immigration sentiment. Meghan explained her fashion choices and why she had a neutral color palette, although we think that's just her style. She also told the story of meeting Will and Kate for the first time and trying to hug them. She was very diplomatic about it. Chandra mentions how Meghan doesn't have deference toward royals because she's American. She'd already met other royals before Will and Kate and we assume that Eugenie and Beatrice were warmer toward her.  Chandra says they wanted to establish their love story before explaining how things went so wrong in the UK. She also mentions the story about how the palaces denied being contacted for comment but that Netflix came with receipts. Harry explained how the press treatment of Meghan was racist and how his family blew him off and told them their wives went through it too. Comments of the week: Minutes 27:00 to end My comment of the week is from SAS on the post where Hecate wrote about Hilary Duff's fitness journey and her battle with an eating disorder. Chandra's comment of the week is from ArtHistorian on the post about how much William hates Harry and Meghan. Thanks for listening bitches!

Let's go over it! - The lawsuit filed against Tiffany Haddish and Aries Spears has been voluntarily dismissed by the plaintiff. What's happening, what does it mean, and what does it mean for the future of this whole cluster of cases? CONTEXT: SMITHLINE V. MANSON Over the years since 2016, Evan Rachel Wood began speaking publicly about domestic violence, saying she had been abused by two unnamed men. On 2/21/2021, Wood named Brian Warner p/k/a Marilyn Manson as one of her abusers, alleging that he abused her physically and emotionally during their romantic relationship which lasted between 2006 and 2010. On the same day, a handful of other women also made statements claiming to be victims of Warner's abuse. His alleged victims include Ashley Morgan Smithline, Esme Bianco, and Ashley Walters. In 6/2022, Ashley Morgan Smithline filed a lawsuit against Marilyn Manson alleging all kinds of abuses against her during a romantic relationship. In 3/2022, Marilyn Manson, filed a lawsuit against Evan Rachel Wood and Ashley Gore aka Illma Gore. In the lawsuit, he alleges four causes of action: defamation per se, intentional infliction of emotional distress, violation of computer hacking laws, and violation of laws barring impersonation over the internet. -------------------- Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJvDEmKLft6F2MxhuNUMwag/join

During a period in which there is increasing pressure for social media platforms to do more to curb on-line hate speech,  and when there are more and more reports about the connection between inflammatory speech online and violent acts,  this week a report was released into the hate speech on Twitter directed against Meghan and Harry. The report (click here to see it   https://botsentinel.com/reports/documents/duke-and-duchess-of-sussex/report-10-26-2021.pdf ) was produced by the Twitter monitoring organization called Bot Sentinel. In their report into the Twitter hate directed at Meghan and Harry since they stepped down from Royal life in early 2020,  Bot Sentinel report that a relatively small number of what they term single purpose anti-Meghan and Harry accounts create and disseminate most of the hateful content. Bot Sentinel report that they analysed 114,000 tweets and they isolated about 55 single purpose account as the primary hate accounts, with about 28 secondary hate accounts with these 83 accounts combined having about 187.5 thousand followed.  These 83 accounts were responsible for 70% of the original and derivative content targeting Harry and Meghan on Twitter, with the potential to ultimately reach approx. 17 million twitter users.Bot Sentinel state that the hate messaging was not confined to Twitter. The accounts would often Tweet links to private blogs, Instagram accounts, and YouTube focused predominantly on Meghan and Harry. Bot Sentinel name and shame these 83 accounts,  and conclude that in their opinion the users were violating Twitter's rules on platform manipulation and spam, abuse and harassment policies, and in publishing private information. Twitter's terms of service forbid abusive behaviours and engagement that harasses or intimidates or is otherwise intended to shame or degrade others, and they prohibit coordination between accounts that results in harm to others.Bot Sentinel CEO and founder Christopher Bouzy was interviewed by BuzzFeed News about the Meghan and Harry report. He told BuzzFeed that when Bot Sentinel announced they would be launching an investigation into anti-Meghan and Harry accounts on Twitter, he became the target of a fully-fledged harassment campaign unlike he said, anything that he or his team had experienced before. Bouzy described the harassment that he and his team received as different and personal with false allegations being made against him to try to pre-emptively discredit the report's findings. Mr. Bouzy emphasized that the negative Twitter activity towards Meghan and Harry is not being done by automated BOT accounts but by real accounts run by humans.  He added that these people know how the manipulate the algorithms, manipulate Twitter and stay under the radar to avoid detection and suspension. BuzzFeed approached Twitter about the findings in the Bot Sentinel report who informed BuzzFeed they were actively investigating the information and the accounts referenced in the report, saying they would take action of accounts that violate the Twitter Rules. Please keep listening for future podcasts on all things Meghan, Harry, Archie and Lili.
