In this episode, recorded at the 2023 Oslo Freedom Forum, Philippa Thomas, a former BBC correspondent, and Dalia Hatuqa, an independent journalist specializing in Palestine and Israeli affairs, discuss the life, legacy, and story of the Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. Shireen's life prematurely ended when she was killed by Israeli soldiers in May 2022 while reporting in Palestine. Hatuqa and Thomas seek to continue Abu Akleh's legacy by advocating for freedom of the press and an end to global violence and repression of journalists.

Chief of staff to U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell from 2001-2005, retired Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson talks frankly about the "special relationship" between the United States and Israel. Fear and intimidation lead the United States to ignore or condone human rights violations by Israel, even when U.S. lives are involved. Wilkerson discusses the parallels between the killing of U.S. peace activist Rachel Corrie 20 years ago by an Israeli soldier and Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh's death in 2022 in what many believe was an Israeli extra-judicial murder and says securing accountability for Abu Akleh's death is no more likely now than it has been for Rachel Corrie's family, whom he tried to assist when in the State Department. The wide-ranging conversation includes a discussion of the many factors in  the U.S. invasion of Iraq, including Israel, and the misdeeds and crimes of the CIA.

One year ago, Israeli soldiers shot and killed Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. To this day, no Israeli soldier has been indicted for the killing. Now, a new report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) finds that the lack of accountability for Abu Akleh is part of a pattern: Though the Israeli army has killed 20 journalists since 2001, no Israeli soldier has ever been charged. Jewish Currents senior reporter Alex Kane discusses the report with CPJ's Sherif Mansour—and also talks about the life and death of Abu Akleh with writer and attorney Jennifer Zacharia, Abu Akleh's first cousin.

Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. **Tai-Ex opening ** The Tai-Ex opened up 150-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 14,325 on turnover of 6.2-billion N-T. The market extended momentum from its previous session on Monday to close above the 14,100-point mark, as investor interest got a boost on the back of reduced concerns over the U-S Fed's rate hike cycle in the wake of moderating inflation for October. The local bellwether electronics led the rise, after Wall Street moved higher last Friday, while buying also rotated to large-cap old economy stocks to lend strong support to the broader market during the trading day. **Government to Raise Weekly Arrivals Cap to 200,000 from December ** The Central Epidemic Command Center says the government will raise the weekly cap on arriving visitors from abroad from the current 150,000 to 200,000 from December 1. The move comes as the number of domestic coronavirus cases has been registering a decline for five consecutive weeks. According to center head Victor Wang, his office opted to expand the weekly capacity of inbound (入境) travelers in anticipation of increasing demand, driven by the gradual easing of border restrictions both here in Taiwan and many other countries. Wang says the government also expects to see an increased need for travel with the approach of the Christmas and year-end holiday season as well as the Lunar New Year. **Ceremony Held in Ukraine to Honor Killed Taiwanese Soldier ** The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says a farewell ceremony in honor of a Taiwanese man killed earlier this month fighting for Ukraine has been held at a church in the city of Lviv. Tseng Sheng-guang flew to Ukraine in June to join the International Legion of Ukraine's territorial defense forces and was confirmed to have been killed in fighting near Luhansk on November 2. The ministry says hundreds of people turned out at the ceremony, which took place at the Garrison Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. The attendees included Tseng's mother, wife and sister, who are being accompanied by foreign ministry personnel while in the Ukraine. **Israel Condemns US Probe into Journalist Killing ** Israel's Defense Minister says the United States government has started an investigation into the fatal shooting of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. Israel is condemning the probe as a “grave (嚴重的) mistake” and vowing not to cooperate. Defense Minister Benny Gantz made the statement on Twitter Monday, saying Israel has made it clear to the U.S. “that we won't cooperate with any external investigation.” Palestinian officials, Abu Akleh's family and Al Jazeera accuse Israel of intentionally targeting and killing the 51-year-old journalist, a claim Israel denies. **Bezos Promises to Give Away Most of Wealth ** Jeff Bezos, founder of online retail giant Amazon says he plans to give away most of his $124 billion fortune during his lifetime. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Senior analyst Haviv Rettig Gur and military correspondent Emanuel Fabian join host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. We begin with what we know about what led Prime Minister Naftali Bennett to announce the end of the year-old coalition. What should happen now? (Hint: think West Bank regulations.) What do we know about former prime minister Bejamin Netanyahu's tactics for the coming elections? The New York Times published a damning report blaming IDF soldiers for the death of Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh on May 11 in Jenin. How do the IDF's own findings line up? It was widely reported on Monday that Israel and its regional allies — under US leadership — are developing a joint defense pact to protect against the threat of drones and missiles by Tehran and its regional proxies. What's new here? Discussed articles include: Bennett announces coalition's collapse, elections: ‘We did our utmost to continue' Coalition looking to dissolve Knesset as soon as Wednesday in bid to foil opposition NYT probe: Abu Akleh ‘most likely' killed by IDF, but no indication she was targeted IDF expands Abu Akleh probe, issues fresh call for PA to hand over fatal bullet Gantz says regional air defense alliance has already thwarted Iranian attacks Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. As notícias escalaram bastante rápido. *) Ukraine's Zelenskyy accuses Russia of 'genocide' in Donbass Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Moscow of carrying out a "genocide" in the eastern region of Donbass. In a televised address, Zelenskyy said Moscow's bombardment could leave the entire region "uninhabited". Pro-Moscow separatist groups have since 2014 controlled parts of Donbass, but Russia now appears set on taking the whole region. *) Palestine: Israeli troops deliberately killed Al Jazeera reporter Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed by a bullet fired directly at her by an Israeli sniper, Palestinian attorney general Akram Al-Khatib has said. Al-Khatib shared the details based on the Public Prosecution's report in Ramallah city. He said an Israeli sniper fired the bullet at Abu Akleh's head while she was trying to escape. Fifty-one-year-old Abu Akleh was shot and killed on May 11 while she was covering an Israeli military raid near the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. *) Blinken says US doesn't seek 'conflict or new Cold War' with China US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called for vigorous competition with China to preserve the existing global order, but said his country doesn't seek a "new Cold War". Blinken also said that Beijing posed "the most serious long-term challenge to the international order" despite months of US focus on Russia's assault on Ukraine. The long-awaited speech on Thursday is being seen as the most comprehensive statement to date on China by President Joe Biden's administration. *) Türkiye: Military ops on southern border necessary for national security The Turkish National Security Council has said operations across Türkiye's southern borders do not target neighbours' territorial integrity, but are necessary for its national security. In a statement after a meeting on Thursday, the council also urged countries violating international law by supporting terrorism to "put an end to this attitude". On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his country would take steps to complete the remainder of a 30-kilometre safe zone along its southern border. And, finally... *) 'Goodfellas' actor Ray Liotta dead at 67 Actor Ray Liotta, who starred in Martin Scorsese's gangster classic "Goodfellas," has died in the Dominican Republic at the age of 67. Liotta, whose portrayal of mobster Henry Hill in Scorsese's crime masterpiece won universal admiration, was shooting a new film in the country when he died. Police said emergency services were called early on Thursday morning to a hotel in Santo Domingo where they found Liotta already dead.

The National Rifle Association is beginning its annual convention in Houston. Leaders of the powerful gun rights lobbying group are gearing up to “reflect on” and deflect any blame for this week's deadly shooting of 19 children and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. Former President Donald Trump and other leading Republicans are scheduled to address the three-day gun industry marketing and advocacy event, which begins Friday and is expected to draw protesters. Some scheduled speakers and performers have backed out, including two Texas lawmakers and “American Pie” singer Don McLean, who says “it would be disrespectful” to go ahead with his act. A bipartisan group of senators is trying to find a compromise on gun legislation. That's after Democrats' attempt at responding to the back-to-back mass shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, Texas, failed Thursday in the Senate. Republicans blocked debate on a domestic terrorism bill that would have opened debate on hate crimes and gun policy. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says he will give negotiations about two weeks while Congress is in recess. A week filled with goodbyes continues for family and friends of victims of the racist attack on a Buffalo supermarket. Funeral services are set for Friday for three of those killed: Geraldine Talley, Andre Mackniel and Margus Morrison. They are among the 10 people killed and three wounded May 14 when a white gunman opened fire on shoppers and employees at a Tops Friendly Market. Authorities say at least four people have been killed and others might still be missing after a house explosion in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Pottstown Borough Manager Justin Keller confirmed in a press conference that the explosion occurred Thursday just after 8 p.m. in Pottstown, about 40 miles northwest of Philadelphia. More on fighting in Ukraine, the state of the coronavirus pandemic and stocks. Pandemic-weary U.S. residents are confronting high gas prices as they decide whether to travel this Memorial Day weekend. AAA says the average gas price in the U.S. on Thursday was $4.60 per gallon. In California, it topped $6. But for some, more than two years of pandemic life has them hitting the road or taking to the skies despite a recent surge in cases. AAA estimates that more than 39 million people in the U.S. will travel 50 miles or more from home during the holiday weekend. A record number of almost 90% of those travelers are expected to go by car over the long weekend. The Warriors return to the NBA Finals, Connor McDavid advances to the Stanley Cup Conference Finals, The Hurricanes blow off the Rangers, and the Yankees win their first matchup of the season with the Rays.  A Texas law enforcement official says the 18-year-old gunman who slaughtered 21 people at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, entered the building “unobstructed” through a door that was apparently unlocked. Victor Escalon, a regional director at the Texas Department of Public Safety, said Thursday that Salvador Ramos did not encounter any law enforcement officers when he entered Robb Elementary School on Tuesday and opened fire, killing 19 children and two teachers. A New York appeals court has ruled former President Donald Trump must answer questions under oath in the state's civil investigation into his business practices. A four-judge panel in the appellate division of the state's trial court on Thursday upheld Manhattan Judge Arthur Engoron's Feb. 17 ruling enforcing subpoenas for Trump and his two eldest children to give deposition testimony in Attorney General Letitia James' probe. Trump had appealed, seeking to overturn the ruling. His lawyers argued that ordering the Trumps to testify violated their constitutional rights because their answers could be used in a parallel criminal investigation. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says the Biden administration is aiming to lead the international bloc opposed to Russia's invasion of Ukraine into a broader coalition to counter what it sees as a more serious, long-term threat to global order from China. In a Washington speech outlining the administration's China policy on Thursday, Blinken laid out a three-pillar approach to competing with Beijing in a race to define the 21st century's economic and military balance. While the U.S. sees Russia as the most acute and immediate threat to international stability, Blinken says the administration believes China poses a greater danger. Carnival Cruise Line says a painting project is to blame for an odor that affected some cruise ship passengers and prompted the U.S. Coast Guard to investigate. Petty Officer Stephen Lehmann says the Coast Guard dispatched a crew to the Carnival Magic ship on Thursday. He says no one was evacuated for medical treatment. In a written statement, Carnival said some passengers were affected by the odor from an outside painting project and were aided by crew members. Carnival says all passengers have now disembarked in Norfolk as planned. The Palestinian Authority says its investigation into the shooting death of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh proves that she was deliberately killed by Israeli forces. Israel's defense chief called that “a blatant lie.” Abu Akleh, a veteran Palestinian-American reporter for Al Jazeera's Arabic service, was shot in the head on May 11 during an Israeli military raid in the occupied West Bank. Russia is pressing the West to lift sanctions over the war in Ukraine, seeking to shift the blame for a growing food crisis. That crisis is worsened by Kyiv's inability to ship millions of tons of grain and other agricultural products because of the conflict. Britain accused Moscow of trying to hold the world ransom and insisted there would be no sanctions relief. Ukraine is one of the world's largest exporters of wheat, corn and sunflower oil. The war, including a Russian blockade of its ports, has prevented much of that flow. Many of those ports are now heavily mined. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov tried to put the blame for the crisis squarely on Western sanctions. British prosecutors have charged actor Kevin Spacey with four counts of sexual assault against three men. The U.K. charges were announced as Spacey was testifying in a courtroom in New York City in a civil lawsuit. Ray Liotta, the actor best known for playing mobster Henry Hill in “Goodfellas” and baseball player Shoeless Joe Jackson in “Field of Dreams,” has died. He was 67. An official at the Dominican Republic's National Forensic Science Institute who was not authorized to speak to the media confirmed the death of Ray Liotta and said his body was taken to the Cristo Redentor morgue. Liotta's publicist, Jen Allen, said he was in the Dominican Republic shooting a new movie and didn't wake up Thursday morning. Liotta's most iconic role, as real life mobster Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese's “Goodfellas” came in 1990. Eight of the 10 largest cities in the U.S. lost population during the first year of the coronavirus pandemic. New estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau show only Phoenix and San Antonio gained new residents from 2020 to 2021. New York led the way, losing more than 305,000 residents, or about 3.5% of its 2020 population. Among the nation's 10 largest cities, it was followed by Chicago and Los Angeles. Smaller big cities primarily in the Sunbelt gained news residents. Those cities include Austin and Fort Worth in Texas; Jacksonville, Florida; Charlotte, North Carolina and Columbus, Ohio. Misinformation and conspiracy theories about Tuesday's deadly school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, began to spread online only hours after the carnage. Some social media users falsely speculated that the gunman was an immigrant in the country illegally, even though Gov. Greg Abbott has confirmed he was a U.S. citizen. Others claimed the gunman was transgender and posted photos of innocent people that they claimed were him. Different conspiracy theories claimed the shooting didn't even happen. Similar waves of misinformation have erupted following past school shootings too, as social media users eager for information spread bogus rumors and wild theories. Tuesday's shooting left 19 children and two adults dead. Twitter will pay a $150 million penalty and put in new safeguards to settle federal regulators' allegations that the social platform failed to protect the privacy of users' data over a six-year span. The Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission announced the settlement Wednesday with Twitter. The regulators allege that Twitter violated a 2011 FTC order by deceiving users about how well the company maintained and protected the privacy and security of their nonpublic contact information. The government alleged that the violations occurred from May 2013 to September 2019. The U.S. economy shrank in the first three months of the year even though consumers and businesses kept spending at a solid pace, the government reported Thursday in a slight downgrade of its previous estimate for the January-March quarter. Last quarter's 1.5% drop in the U.S. gross domestic product does not likely signal the start of a recession. The contraction was caused, in part, by a wider trade gap and by a slower restocking of goods in stores and warehouses, which had built up their inventories in the previous quarter for the 2021 holiday shopping season. Analysts say the economy has likely resumed growing in the current April-June quarter. Fewer Americans applied for jobless aid last week as the number of Americans collecting unemployment benefits remains near five-decade lows. Applications for unemployment benefits fell by 8,000 to 210,000 for the week ending May 21, the Labor Department reported Thursday. First-time applications are generally representative of the number of layoffs. American workers are enjoying historically strong job security two years after the coronavirus pandemic plunged the economy into a short but devastating recession. Weekly applications for unemployment aid have been consistently below the pre-pandemic level of 225,000 for most of 2022. —The Associated Press See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dan has been covering this issue alongside Anthony Summers and Robynn Swan, authors of The Eleventh Day: The Full Story of 9/11 and Osama Bin Laden, for a number of years now and his latest Florida Bulldog piece on the subject is entitled "A ‘state secret' no more: New FBI report says Saudi government officials provided support network for 9/11 hijackers". Among the subjects discussed in relation to the report are: Saudi charities; Prince Bandar Bin Salman (nicknamed Bandar Bush for his association with George W. Bush); the Muslim World League; Operation Encore; the figures of Fahad al Thumairy , Omar al Bayoumi, and the now unredacted Musaed al Jarrah; 9/11 hijackers al Hazmi and al Mihdhar; and much, much more! In the second segment of the show, Mitchell Plitnick of ReThinking Foreign Policy joins me to discuss his Responsible Statecraft piece "Biden's trip to Israel is getting trickier by the day". In June, President Joe Biden will visit Israel. The death of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in Jenin, the police attacks during her funeral, and the upcoming Jerusalem Day "Flag March" of Israeli far-right nationalists which will go through Damascus Gate and the Old City's Muslim Quarter has already put tensions at an all time high. Meanwhile, the Biden administration is seeking to pivot U.S. foreign policy out of the Middle East to focus on Russia and China. Mitchell explains how he believes this has led to a circumstance where the Biden administration is not addressing issues like Abu Akleh's death or the large expansion of settlements in the West Bank. In addition to this we discuss Israel's current Prime Minister Naftali Bennet, the figure of Knesset member and far-right provocateur Itamar Ben-Gvir, Secretary of State Antony Blinken's encounter with a pro-Palestinian activist, and much, much more.

Israelis and Palestinians have traded blame over who fired the fatal shot, while Israel has opened an investigation into heavy-handed police tactics used during Abu Akleh's funeral procession, which almost caused her coffin to fall to the ground. We get analysis with Sherif Mansour, Middle East and North Africa Program Coordinator at the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The bishops spoke out after a gunman killed 10 people and injured three others on May 14 at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and a shooter killed one person and wounded five others on May 15 at a church in Laguna Woods, California. Authorities called the mass shooting in Buffalo a racially motivated hate crime and said that the gunman specifically targeted the store because it is located in a predominantly Black neighborhood. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/251260/us-catholic-bishops-call-for-honest-dialogue-on-persistent-evil-of-racism-after-mass-shootings The two branches of the Catholic charity, Caritas, in Ukraine say they have helped almost 1.5 million people since Russia's full-scale invasion. Caritas Ukraine, which offers humanitarian assistance through the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, oversees an office in the Russian-occupied city of Mariupol where seven people were killed under Russian tank fire. The country's other Caritas organization is Caritas-Spes, the charitable mission of Ukraine's Latin Rite bishops.Caritas groups are also active in neighboring countries, where more than six million Ukrainians have fled since February 24. In Poland, which has welcomed over three million Ukrainian refugees, Caritas' diocesan network has delivered over 1.5 million meals to more than 500,000 people. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/251253/this-is-going-to-be-a-long-haul-caritas-groups-help-almost-15-million-ukrainians-amid-war Christian leaders of the Holy Land on Monday condemned recent violence at the funeral of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, saying the “tragic episode” has “deeply wounded” the Christian community. Abu Akleh was a Melkite Greek Catholic and a Palestinian American who was killed while covering an Israeli raid on a refugee camp in the West Bank May 11. The BBC reported that during her funeral procession on May 13, Abu Akleh's coffin “almost fell” as police waded into the crowd brandishing batons and using stun grenades. The Christian leaders called the police' actions at the funeral, which took place in the parking compound of St. Joseph's Hospital in Jerusalem, a “violent intrusion.” On May 12, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem called “for a thorough and urgent investigation of all the circumstances of Abu Akleh's killing and for bringing those responsible to justice.” catholicnewsagency.com/news/251256/christian-leaders-condemn-violence-at-funeral-of-palestinian-journalist-shireen-abu-akleh Today, the Church celebrates Saint Pascal Baylon, a 16th-century lay brother amongst the Franciscan friars of the Alcantarine Reform. The senior strategic adviser speaks about the killing of Al Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh and the ensuing media storm Israel found itself in the midst of, noting that "being in the middle of a storm over international public opinion is not new for Israel. It is somewhat of a routine for the country, to move from a crisis to a crisis, though each crisis is different." Vatikay argues that Israel responded quickly and accurately when it proposed to the Palestinians to hold a joint investigation over Abu Akleh's death. The way the New York Times reported it was that she “die[d]”: The Times, CBS News, the Associated Press, and more corporate media outlets all referred to the incident, in which Israeli military opened fire on journalists, through words like “clash,” “conflict,” or other misleading terms to cast doubt on who the attackers were. Multiple eye witnesses confirmed the Israeli military shot and killed Abu Akleh. Journalist Alan MacCleod of MintPress News joins the Useful Idiots to expose media bias and propaganda that's become increasingly difficult to dig through. (We highly recommend following his twitter to stay informed) In the extended interview, Alan uncovers the dark truth of TikTok's shady executives and a Ukrainian news source that's become a favorite of western corporate media but isn't what it seems. And unfortunately, as we learned with Mnar Adley last week, MintPress's journalism is at stake after sites like PayPal decided to wipeout the accounts of dissenting voices. “If you are going to challenge the government or challenge power in any way,” MacCleod explains. “You might want to remove your money from PayPal because it could get zapped at any point just like it happened to me.” Plus, Biden ditches Covid relief to spend more money on weapons for Ukraine, Lindsey Graham's war-mongering speech, and a funeral proposal. It's all this, and more, on this week's episode of Useful Idiots. Check it out. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Kyle breaks down the Israeli occupation forces' brutal killing of Al Jazeera's Shireen Abu Akleh during a raid on the Jenin refugee camp. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and his apartheid regime attempted to blame the shooting on Palestinian gunmen, this absurd claim was immediately debunked by Israel's top human rights organization. The bullet that was lodged in Abu Akleh's brain was of a type used by the Israeli military. Washington has predictably issued cheap, tepid condolences and has expressed support for an investigation that is to be partly led by Tel Aviv. The reaction to the murder highlights the U.S. government's double standards and the mainstream press' rank hypocrisy. Connor discusses a hawkish Senate motion passed by a bipartisan majority that, though non-binding, sends a powerful message to the Joe Biden administration and Tehran that any attempted return to the deal will face insurmountable opposition. The supporters of the motion advocate for the much of the same “longer and stronger” measures the Trump administration demanded previously including putting Iran's ballistic missiles on the table and refusing to lift the IRGC's Foreign Terrorist Organization designation. There is growing anti-Iran deal sentiment even among members of Biden's own party. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
