Christopher Gimmer is the co-founder of Snappa, a software company that simplifies graphic design. Chris released a blog post recently, explaining why his company made the decision to add bitcoin to their balance sheet, by converting a large portion of the company's cash balance to bitcoin. It was an excellently written piece, which also serves as a fantastic primer for explaining the investment case for bitcoin generally. Of course, this comes on the heels of the big announcement by MicroStrategy in early August, which announced that they were converting $250million of their balance sheet cash to bitcoin. I believe this is a trend that we will see accelerate rapidly, so I thought it would be interesting to get Chris to come on and explain the thinking behind his companies decision, and discuss some more of the details around it. Today, I'm talking with Christopher Gimmer, the Co-Founder and CEO of Snappa, a SaaS startup that lets you create online graphics in a snap. Chris first came on the show almost exactly a year ago and shared how he grew Snappa to $20k MRR in just one year. As a MicroConf regular, it's been great to catch up with him out in Vegas and hear how business is going but it's not usually polite to grill somebody for 30 minutes in person, so I was excited to have the opportunity to do that today. Since our last interview, Snappa has nearly tripled and we talk about the lessons Chris has learned along the way; everything from hiring to how they've sustained this growth with a lean, profitable team. If you've always heard you need to pick growth or profitability, then Chris is here to tell you why that doesn't need to be the case.

The holy grail of side hustle business models is software, right? Built it once and sell it over and over again for almost zero incremental cost! Having built the online graphic design tool Snappa to $33k in monthly recurring revenue in 2 years, Christopher Gimmer rounds out our "recurring revenue" theme for the month. The software as a service aims to help bloggers and content creators make perfectly sized social media graphics or blog images easily and professionally. “Create online graphics in a snap,” the tagline says. The cool do-it-yourself tool is sold on a freemium or monthly/annual subscription model. Note: Click here to download Christopher’s top tips for bootstrapping and scaling a recurring revenue business model from this episode. “I just wanted to know whether people were having the same issues I was having,” Christopher said, talking about the hassle he experienced creating quick and professional looking social media and blog graphics. Chris Gimmer and his co-founder built a pretty slick piece of software called Snappa. I liked it so much I became a paying customer just nine months after their launch. But they launched on a .io domain name and – as Gimmer describes in "How (and Why) We Purchased the Snappa.com Domain for $40,000" – their "cool startup domain name" left their customers confused and questioning the longevity of their operations. So, negotiating the price down from $84,500, they bought Snappa.com for $40,000 on a payment plan. But nothing is ever as easy as it sounds, and in this interview Gimmer explains the details behind his thought process at each stage of his bootstrapped SaaS startup.
My guest today has been bootstrapping startups since 2014. He is currently the co-founder and CEO of Snappa, software built to enable entrepreneurs and marketers to create graphics. Snappa was launched in July of 2015, and just recently passed the impressive milestone of $25,000 monthly recurring revenue. From quitting his stable government job to recently purchasing the URL Snappa.com for $40,000, this conversation is insightful into the inner-workings of growing a software company from the ground up. Now, let’s hack… Christopher Gimmer.
Today, on the Early-Stage Founder Show, I'm talking with , the co-founder and CEO of , a SaaS tool that lets marketers and entrepreneurs create graphics in seconds. Chris has only been in the startup world since 2014, but in that time he built a Bootstrap Theme store up to $10k/mo in sales before selling it, and bootstrapped his current startup to $20k MRR in the first year while only charging customers $10 to $15 a month. In our chat, we cover everything from how Christopher made the decision to go all-in with entrepreneurship to how he validated the idea for Snappa, but where we really dive in is discussing the exact steps he followed to achieve such fast growth in the first year of the business, and the unexpected challenge he and his team faced along the way. You don't want to miss this one because Christopher holds nothing back.
