It's September 24th, 1988 -- a warm, sunny and dry day in the Olympic Stadium in Seoul, South Korea. It also happened to be the final of the men's 100 metre sprint to decide the Olympic champion and world's fastest man. The top contenders, Carl Lewis from the United States, and a Canadian sprinter named Ben Johnson, lined up in lanes 3 and 6 respectively in one of the most highly anticipated races of the year. The gun goes off -- and almost immediately Johnson had a step on every other runner, including the defending Olympic gold medalist from the US. By 50 meters it was clear that nobody could keep up with the Canadian runner. As Johnson approached the finish line, he iconically raised his hands in victory, pointing his right index finger to the sky and then to stands toward thousands of screaming fans. With a time of 9.79 seconds, Ben Johnson had completely smashed his own World Record and was now an Olympic champion. Three days later, Johnson was stripped of his gold medal and world record by the International Olympic Committee after he tested positive for the banned performance-enhancing substance stan-o-zolol.   Why am I telling you about an Olympic final that happened over 35 years ago? Well, the events that would transpire after the IOC announced that it would strip Johnson of his gold medal and world record, would send shockwaves through the Canadian sport system – the reverberations of which would be felt in our cultural, political, and social systems as well as our collective memories. Johnson's disqualification spurred something of what sociologists might call a moral panic regarding the unethical grip that had apparently taken hold of Canadian sport – a deviation from the stereotypical perception of Canada as a wholesome, equitable, and polite geopolitical nation. And perhaps most relevant for this talk today, I argue that this was a fundamental precursor to the current moment that we find ourselves in Canadian sport – a moment, as I hope to convince you, that is riddled with harm and abuse. In this episode, Derek walks us through why Canada needs a judicial inquiry into harm and abuse in sport and, more importantly, why that's nowhere near enough to give justice to survivors. If we want to do justice for survivors of harm and abuse in Canadian sport, we need a judicial inquiry. But that's nowhere near enough. We also need to act, and we must act now, to ensure there are effective mechanisms for oversight, accountability, and, perhaps most importantly, reparation for the harms already done and the harms being done literally right now across the country. Anything less is a metaphor for action – it's an obfuscation of the long-history of harm and abuse that we know about in this space, and that we know is only a small snapshot of the true reality of abuse in Canadian sport – and it's a surface level attempt reinforce and replicate a system of sport that inevitably produces and endorses abusive spaces within a project of winning-at-any-cost. For if we continue to allow and obfuscate violent abuse in sport, and sport is supposedly integral to our national identity, one concludes that violent abuse is indeed part of Canada. I don't want sport to be about violent abuse, and surely you don't want Canada to be about violent abuse. So let's do something about it, and let's do something now. Video of a version of this talk at McGill University can be found here.  Please read Kim Shore's brilliant piece on the crisis of abuse in Canadian sport here. On this episode of The End of Sport, Johanna and Nathan sit down with Kim Shore for the second part of a two-part episode to talk about different forms of abuse that persist in Canadian gymnastics as well as how we as fans, parents, and onlookers can prepare for it and prevent it. Kim Shore is a certified Corporate Leadership Coach, Workshop Facilitator, former member of the Gymnastics Canada Board of Directors, chair of the first ever GymCan Safe Sport Committee and was a gymnast for her entire childhood and competed at national and international competitions. She ultimately achieved a full ride scholarship to a Division I NCAA school, CIAU individual and team national championships, and a 7th place finish at the Sport Aerobic World Championships. This is a really special episode that will continue past conversations we've had with Ciara McCormack and many others. We hope that this interview will help equip parents with approaches, questions, and demands they should make of their coaches and teams, and national governing bodies of sport, governments. Parents want to know what they should do, should they even enroll their parents in more intense sport environments to begin with? How do they need to prepare themselves and their children to recognize warning signs? These are all such difficult questions. But we hope to continue talking through some answers that we got from Ciara about a year ago, and dive even further here.  We want to make it very clear that we are rejecting the premise that athlete abuse is an acceptable part of modern sport. It absolutely is not. It needs to be rooted out. Infuriatingly, many sportspeople seem to have accepted the existence of sporting abuse. We say they seem to have accepted it due to their reporting and response to abuse as a ‘bad apple' phenomenon the way they view racism. This is evidenced by the horrific pervasiveness of sporting abuse, with cases in every single sport from the youth level to the pros and Olympic Games, which is abetted and promoted by sport orgs, universities, etc. who refuse to properly investigate, create pathways to reporting abuse, etc. And as we've seen with the NCAA and other orgs: some even reject any responsibility for protecting child athletes. This all means that parents of children of all genders are practically sending their kids to sports with a high possibility that they could be abused. Parents basically have to cross their fingers and toes that coaches, other athletes, etc. won't abuse their children. This is institutional and governmental failure at numerous levels. Hopefully this episode will help provide a guideline of sports to help parents and athletes navigate the dangerous nature of modern sport. Children should be able to compete in sports without worrying that they'll be abused and harassed; parents should feel completely comfortable signing their children up without having to be hypervigilant about predators. But as we've talked about, the people who created modern sport decided to control athletes' bodies first and foremost under the guise of acceptable and even laudable behavior. And since sport orgs have decided that their actual purpose is not to protect athletes - but to protect the image and liability of the organization and powerful people who control it – then athletes' bodies are mere pawns in the sport orgs' game for control. The following discussion is absolutely not a sign that we are accepting of the status quo, nor that parents and children should accept the status quo. This is about fighting back.   For a transcription of this episode, please click here. (Updated semi-regularly Credit @punkademic) Research Assistance for The End of Sport provided by Abigail Bomba. __________________________________________________________________________ If you are interested, you can support the show via our Patreon! We explore the aftermath of the shocking allegations of abuse in women's football in the USA. The news from the NWSL was particularly distressing for former Irish international Ciara McCormack, because for many years in Canada, Ciara tried to be heard and taken seriously when in 2008 she highlighted alleged mis-conduct by her coach at the Vancouver White Caps, Bob Birarda. In 2019, McCormack wrote a blog post called "A Horrific Canadian Soccer Story – The Story No One Wants to Listen To, But Everyone Needs to Hear." Birarda, who was also the coach of the Canadian women's under-20 team, was charged with multiple sex offences in 2020, which he denies and is await trial. Ciara started by explaining about the atmosphere and power dynamic at the club. The first new sickle-cell treatment in 20 years was announced this week. It's expected to help keep thousands of people out of hospital and reduce health inequalities for black people, who are predominantly affected. **Content warning: this episode discusses physical, sexual, and emotional abuse within Canadian soccer.** In this episode of The End of Sport, Johanna and Derek are joined for a second time by Ciara McCormack, a former professional soccer player with the Vancouver Whitecaps and whistleblower on abuses within the Canadian soccer system, about the physical emotional abuse that former coach Bob Birarda inflicted upon players. In the second of a two-part show, Ciara walks us through what it was like to return to the Whitecaps years after experiencing abuse from Bob Birarda and team and, fascinatingly, talks about what ultimately led up to the release of “A Horrific Canadian Soccer Story” and how it was received by the team, fans, and media (who, unsurprisingly, were not very supportive). In the balk half of the episode, Ciara talks about what is next now that Bob Birarda has been arrested and charged. We finish with a discussion about the wonderful work Ciara is doing to change the sport for younger generations. Ciara McCormack is a former college and professional soccer player who played soccer at Yale University and the University Connecticut, and later professionally for a wide variety of top teams for 7 years ranging from the Boston Renegades and Vancouver Whitecaps Women to teams in Denmark, Norway, and Australia. She also played for the Republic of Ireland from 2008-2014. She was the 1st Canadian player to make it to the Champions League Final. To top off her achievements, she also has a whopping total of 3 Master's degrees on subjects related to women's soccer. Importantly, Ciara has spoken out publicly about the verbal, emotional, and sexual abuse that she experienced on the Whitecaps and in Canadian soccer. Finally, Ciara is the founder of Girls Can Soccer and TOPP Soccer, both of which we will certainly get to in the interview. **Content warning: this episode discusses physical, sexual, and emotional abuse within Canadian soccer.** In this episode of The End of Sport, Johanna and Derek are joined by Ciara McCormack, a former professional soccer player with the Vancouver Whitecaps and whistleblower on abuses within the Canadian soccer system, about the physical emotional abuse that former coach Bob Birarda inflicted upon players. In the first of a two-part show, Ciara details her own background in soccer and what led to her professional career in Vancouver before shifting focus to her whistleblowing on the harms being done to athletes in the system. The show then quickly turns to a discussion of everything leading up to Ciara's decision to post a widely influential blog in 2019, “A Horrific Canadian Soccer Story.” Ciara paints a bleak and absolutely necessary picture of problems in Canadian soccer, Canadian sport more generally, and a system that is built upon the centralization of top-down power in the sport. And…as you would expect, we even get into media complicity in the whole thing. Welcome back to another episode of the Third Sub Podcast! In episode 66, Alex and Sam are back, as usual, this time to chat about some Canadian Soccer and Vancouver Whitecaps news stories. First, they dive into Forge FC's run in CONCACAF League, in which they unfortunately bowed out in the quarter-finals and lost a subsequent playoff in, as a win in either of those games would've seen them qualify straight to the CONCACAF Champions League, something they can still do with a win over Toronto FC in the Canadian Championship final early on in 2021. It was a strong CONCACAF run, however, and that fact isn't lost on Alex and Sam, who tip their hats to the still-new franchise on its efforts. After, they dive into the news over in York, as it was announced that York 9 is now York United, as they conducted a big rehaul on the branding side. They give their thoughts on the changes, giving high marks to the branding itself, while giving their thoughts on what they think this may or may not accomplish in the long run. Next, they touch on a bit of Montreal Impact news, as they get set to resume their 2020 CONCACAF Champions League campaign next week, before looking at the news that Canadian Premier League teams might be able to host fans in their home markets when that league campaign resumes in 2021. Lastly, they finish with a bit of Whitecaps news, as they touch on the rumours of Deiber Caicedo's reported signing in Vancouver, before looking at some MLS free agents the 'Caps could target. They also touch on the news that former Women's head coach Bob Birarda was criminally charged yesterday, thanks to some very important whistleblowing by some former players, led by Ciara McCormack, who's put out some important blog posts denouncing the actions of her former coach, and how the allegations against him were handled. That was the sound at B.C. Place last April, during a walkout by members of a Vancouver Whitecaps supporter group. They did that to protest the club's response to abuse allegations against a former women's soccer coach. In May, the Whitecaps commissioned an independent review of the allegations, and the Whitecaps' respectful workplace policies and procedures. Today, that report has been published.  It found the soccer club did not attempt to “cover up” allegations of harassment by a former coach in the women's program - but said it had failed in its communication with players about the incident. The report was commissioned following explosive allegations that dated back to 2008, which were published on a blog in February by Ciara McCormack, a former Whitecaps women's team and Canada women's under-20 (U20) national team player. It spoke with more than 350 people, and has produced 34 recommendations.   Guest: Ciara McCormack Former Whitecaps player whose blog post alleged abuse

She then found the courage and inner strength to go live and publish her blog, recounting all the details and her truth, and finally, people started to take action. Ciara gives advice and resources for others who have a story to share and helps us see why it's so important to be an advocate for those who feel trapped or taken advantage of. How Ciara and her teammates had their passion and trust turn into a very inappropriate and frightening situation. The details of the scandal, and how Ciara was coached by a man that made them feel the only way to success was to go along with his very abusive ways. What it feels like for Ciara to finally have her emotions recognized and validated by others. Why it was tough for the players to step up and say anything, knowing they would lose so much that they worked hard and sacrificed for, along with their chance to play for the National Team. Vancouver Whitecaps accused of mishandling abuse allegations against former coach

Across Women's Lives

Fans of the Vancouver Whitecaps, a professional soccer club in Canada, are walking out on their team during games. They’re angry with the club for the way it’s handled abuse allegations against a former coach, which date back to 2008.At the time, members of the Whitecaps’ women’s team said their coach, Bob Birarda, behaved inappropriately and sent players sexually charged text messages. The allegations resurfaced recently after former Whitecaps player Ciara McCormack wrote about her own experience in a blog post. The World’s Carol Hills asked her what caused her to come forward again now.Ciara McCormack: The CBC did a big story about abuse in sport. And I think for me, that was the first time that I saw it being spoken about and recognized in Canadian society. I was asked to go on a TV show around this article and ask questions and ask experts about if national sport organizations could properly investigate themselves. The answers were so, I thought, subpar, in terms of saying things like, "Oh, we've got policies on our website," and all this kind of stuff that I knew didn't work. All the people that are involved with the Whitecaps, like [team president] Bob Leonarduzzi, [chief operating officer] Rachel Lewis, people that were involved in our situation in 2008, were still there. And just feeling that it's the same situation for players. There was a situation in 2017 that a mom was on the news talking about how her son had been assaulted and how the Whitecaps tried to handle it internally, which was sort of the same protocol. So, I think it was just a combination of knowing all the factors were the same.Carol Hills:  So, just to be clear, in 2008 no one went to team officials. So, the charges have happened now in 2019. Am I correct in that? No. So, things have come out, obviously, since I've written the blog — lots people have stepped forward. Our manager with the Whitecaps at the time went on record in the media in Vancouver to say that she went to the Whitecaps management numerous times with concerns as an adult in the situation. So, they were well aware that this was going on but not really doing anything about it. There was an investigation that they told us was handled by a third-party ombudsman. But since then, it has come out that it was actually a lawyer that they hired. They never interviewed the girls on the team that experienced those things. So, all this has been coming out since. So, how has the current Whitecaps management handled these allegations as of your blog and as of the current news media cycle that's focusing on it?I think the strategy seemed to be, in the beginning, they thought this was just going to go away. Nobody reached out to us. It was just all very, very generic statements. That statement we refer to, it said, “The club holds itself accountable for creating a respectful, progressive workplace for all staff and players, that club players have access to an ombudsperson to share information on a confidential basis and that, in this case, that ombudsperson had no recommendations for further action.”Now, let's talk about Bob Birarda, the coach at the center of this. What is he doing at this point? What's his situation? At this point, he hasn't been charged, which I think is an important thing to say. He hasn't commented publicly. Is he coaching women's soccer currently? He was actually coaching right up till the day after my blog. He was suspended from his club. He's been on the field essentially three months after he was let go by the Canadian Soccer Association and the Whitecaps. He was back on the field coaching teenage girls because there wasn't anything publicly that was said that could have made a club do anything about it from a technical standpoint. Since then, he's been suspended from his club, but he still has his coaching license. The Canadian Soccer Association, or BC Soccer, as far as I know, haven't suspended his coaching license. Was he let go from the Whitecaps because of this controversy? From what we were told, yes. The timing of it was six weeks before the World Cup, they had won the CONCACAF [tournament] and beaten the US. So, the team was playing well on the field. We were told behind the scenes that he was let go because of this, but it was announced publicly as a mutual decision and the Canadian Soccer Association went as far to say in their statement that they wished him the best of luck in the future. How do you feel about Whitecaps fans, I mean fans of the men's Major League Soccer team, supporting you so publicly by staging walkouts during soccer games?I mean, it's been incredible and not something I think that any of us were expecting. Change needs to happen. It can't just be the group that had something happen to [it], it has to be other people stepping forward. I've been so inspired by them getting involved in this.Ciara McCormack played for the Vancouver Whitecaps soccer team in 2008 and she's one of the players who allege inappropriate behavior by former coach Bob Birada. This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

The new MLS season is underway. Vancouver Whitecaps maybe started it somewhat underwhelmingly with a 3-2 loss at home to Minnesota United, but there's a long road ahead. We pick over the bones of that opening day defeat and hear from both head coaches, Vancouver's Marc Dos Santos and Minnesota's Adrian Heath. We also delve into some of the aspects of what went good and what went wrong for the Whitecaps and look at some individual player's performances and some needs in the squad. Will there be changes in store for next week's trip to Real Salt Lake? Plus we look at the weekend's action in the MLS Western Conference, chat about the Canadian Premier League news of the week, have a discussion about abuse in football following Ciara McCormack's unsettling blog post last week, and Helen Love are back in this week's Wavelength section.
