Cole County prosecutor Locke Thompson is currently dealing with several high-profile cases, including a 1991 Russellville murder, the case involving 53-year-old Francis Kempker of Jefferson City and the incident that happened in February outside an event sponsored by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Prosecutor Thompson joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri". He says we could see a fall or winter trial date set for William Niemet, who's charged with killing his classmate in Russellville in 1991. Prosecutor Thompson also discussed what he could about the recent trial of Kempker, who has been convicted of two counts of forcible rape. Prosecutor Thompson says testimony indicates Kempker would bond women out of the Cole County jail and bring them to his shop in Centertown, where they were raped and physically abused. Kempker, who has denied the allegations on the witness stand, will be sentenced at a later date. And Prosecutor Thompson also confirms he's still investigating an incident that happened outside a Jefferson City fundraiser in February, where Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft says he was almost knocked to the ground by pro-Palestinian demonstrators. The protesters were demonstrating outside an event in Jefferson City sponsored by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Some of the demonstrators held signs saying “Each child of Gaza is our own,” and say genocide is happening in Gaza. They were calling for a ceasefire. A “Columbia Missourian” photographer captured a photo of an altercation that happened outside the building involving Secretary Ashcroft, who's told "Wake Up Mid-Missouri" that that he was pushed and shoved outside the building when he tried to get in and that one demonstrator tried to knock him to the ground. Prosecutor Thompson tells listeners he cannot comment on pending investigations. He confirms he's still investigating.
Dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters demonstrated outside an event Tuesday in Jefferson City sponsored by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Some of the demonstrators held signs saying "Each child of Gaza is our own," and say genocide is happening in Gaza. They're calling for a ceasefire. A "Columbia Missourian" photographer captured a photo of an altercation that happened outside the building involving Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft. Secretary Ashcroft joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri", telling listeners that he was pushed and shoved outside the building when he tried to get in and that one demonstrator tried to knock him to the ground. Ashcroft says he was trying not to fall to the ground and trying to defend himself. He tells listeners that protests in Jefferson City have generally been peaceful, but not this one. "Wake Up Mid-Missouri" guest co-host Jennifer Bukowsky also attended the AIPAC event and tells listeners she was called a "baby killer" and was screamed at by protesters. During the interview, Secretary Ashcroft also outlined his decision to close his investigation into a complaint from a local activist against Columbia Mayor Barbara Buffaloe and three council members that involved recent comments during a council meeting from the dais. Activist Anthony Willroth accused the four officials of violating a state statute by expressing their views about a ballot issue from council dais, after Mayor Buffaloe and the council members voiced support during a council meeting for first ward councilman Nick Knoth and opposition to the recall Knoth is facing:

Saturday, May 3rd, 1980. Miami County, Kansas. Mark and Barry, ages 17 and 14, decide to go fishing near Bull Creek in Miami County, Kansas, maybe an hour’s drive south of Kansas City. The area is deserted countryside—soon to be underwater when a Marais des Cygnes Reservoir Project is completed. After they tire of fishing, they go off to explore the nearby woods and fields. When Barry sees a fresh mound of dirt near the creek, the two teens walk over to look more closely. Ominously, the mound is 10 inches high, 6 feet long, and 4 feet wide. When they spot a piece of denim and a red shirt sticking out from the dirt, they poke gingerly at the cloth. They recoil at terrible smell and cry out “It’s a body.” Poking some more, they see what looks like it might be a knee. That’s finally enough for our young adventurers. Barry yells “We better go tell my mom” as they race away from the scene. I posted the links to the sources used for this episode below. These sources were especially important: Reporter Andy Hoffman’s book Family Affairs was invaluable. His website is https://www.andyhoffmanbooks.com Area newspaper provide excellent coverage of the case, particularly the Kansas City Star, Olathe Daily News, and the Columbia Missourian. I’d appreciate it if you would subscribe to Prison City Murders and write a review. Even critical feedback is appreciated. Recently I set up an email for the podcase prisoncitymurders@gmail.com or you can comment on the cases on this website. Thank you so much for listening and until next time, please don’t murder anybody. I don’t think you can listen to podcasts behind bars. Harrisburg has become the center of a mid-Missouri political controversy that affects the entire region, including Columbia. In the land of tornadoes, are we sure giant blades, sitting hundreds of feet in the air, is a great idea? Does wind energy actually combat "climate change"? How does nuclear energy produced in Callaway County compare to this proposed wind power plant, in terms of "footprint" and efficiency? Why do wind power plants require massive amounts of land compared to nuclear? And what about safety and nuclear waste? The Columbia Missourian's two-part piece about this local issue was quite good. ***This episode of Bowl After Bowl was originally published December 20, 2014. The title and notes have been republished as originally written*** Tobacco 21 On Monday, Columbia City Council passed Tobacco 21 (http://tobacco21.org/)with a landslide six-to-one vote on all three related ordinances. Thank you Laura Nauser for standing up for our personal freedoms and being the only council member to vote "no" on Tobacco 21! Unfortunately Laura's colleagues do not share her respect for the personal freedoms and rights of adults in Columbia, MO. Three changes occurred as a result of the Tobacco 21 vote: • the age to purchase tobacco and paraphernalia for tobacco use (including papers and pipes) increased from 18 to 21 within city limits • the age to purchase e-cigs increased from 18 to 21 within city limits • e-cigs were added to the city's ban on public smoking (http://www.gocolumbiamo.com/Documents/article-ix-smoking.pdf), which especially targets indoor use How can we repeal these bad laws? NOW is the time to work together and create change. Spencer wrote three petitions to counteract the ordinances passed as a result of Tobacco 21: • Petition 022311 would change the tobacco purchase age from 21 back to 18 within city limits • Petition 022312 would remove e-cigs from the indoor ban • Petition 022313 would change the e-cig purchase age from 21 back to 18 within Columbia city limits We need more than 3,209 signatures turned in by January 5. All signatures are to be collected and self-verified by January 4. Petitions are currently available to be signed at Aqueous Vapor (https://aqueousvapor.com/), Midwest Vapor Lounge (https://www.facebook.com/MidwestVaporLounge) and Aardvarx (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Aardvarx/133479993369361?ref=ts&fref=ts). If you need to sign the petition please head to any of those locations during regular business hours! Don't forget to tell your friends to sign as well. We don't have much time, and we need all the support we can get on this campaign! Gary Nolan (http://garynolan.com/) supports the petition and is keeping his listeners informed about its progress. The repeal effort has also received coverage in the Columbia Missourian (http://www.columbiamissourian.com/a/182946/petitioners-fight-to-repeal-new-tobacco-ordinances/), the Columbia Tribune (http://www.columbiatribune.com/news/local/petitioners-seek-to-overturn-tobacco-e-cig-regulations/article_454bbe19-7c5b-5dbc-b9e8-47df0ac00dc3.html), KOMU (http://www.komu.com/news/columbia-citizens-seek-to-repeal-tobacco-e-cig-ordinances-64070/) and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://interact.stltoday.com/pr/local-news/PR121814114519787). Nebraska, Oklahoma sue Colorado for cannabis legalization https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9BTx3ajiGk Because cannabis remains illegal under federal law, the attorneys general of Nebraska and Oklahoma have filed a lawsuit to repeal its legalization in Colorado. Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning said he is tired of wasting law enforcement resources on patrolling his state's border. Spencer and Laurien offer a solution: legalize it.
