Missouri's 2025 legislative session in Jefferson City has about a month left. The session ends on Friday May 16 at 6 pm. "Missouri Times" publisher Scott Faughn joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Missouri" this morning and he praises the job that the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is doing. Mr. Faughn tells listeners that MoDOT is accomplishing the things Missourians want. MoDOT is thanking you for your patience during this weekend's I-70 bridge demolition in Columbia, which caused heavy backups Saturday morning and early Saturday afternoon. MoDOT finished the demolition of the I-70 bridge near Columbia's Big O Tires ahead of schedule. ALL lanes of I-70 are now open. Mr. Faughn is also pleased with the job that MoDOT director Ed Hassinger is doing. Mr. Faughn also predicts the GOP-controlled Legislature will approve a big school choice bill, but not this year. He also discussed abortion and IP, which stands for initiative petition:

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) says the rough winter in January and February caused numerous potholes. MoDOT state maintenance director Darin Hamelink joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Missouri" to discuss potholes and what the agency is doing. Mr. Hamelink tells listeners that MoDOT has already spent $8-million this year on potholes, with $5-million of that being spent on labor. He urges you to slow down and move over a lane when you see a MoDOT crew making repairs, and to never driver distracted. Mr. Hamelink also encourages you to call 1-888-ASK-MODOT to report potholes. You need to be specific on where the pothole is. We also addressed the growing problem of litter, which is costing Missouri taxpayers millions of dollars a year:

Missouri's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) director says needles, human waste and trash from Columbia's homeless camps can significantly contribute to pollution and water quality issues in the Hinkson creek. Director Kurt Schaefer joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Missouri" to discuss the concerns. He says DNR has received around 30 water quality complaints about Columbia homeless encampments since late 2022. DNR has written a letter to city officials, saying trash and human waste from the homeless camps can significantly contribute to pollution and water quality issues. Director Schaefer tells "Wake Up" that while there are multiple homeless camps in Columbia, the big one he's referring to is near I-70 and Highway 63. He notes some of that camp is on state Department of Transportation (MoDOT) property, telling listeners that MoDOT will be receiving a letter today that is similar to the one Columbia received in late February. Director Schaefer wants detailed plans from the city of Columbia and MoDOT on what they plan to do to address the concerns. Columbia spokeswoman Sydney Olsen has told 939 the Eagle that the city will continue to work with DNR to address the concerns. Olsen says the city has procedures in place involving illegal camping, adding that the city has made it easier for residents to report it. She also emphasizes the importance of keeping streams and waterways as clean as possible:

A state lawmaker from northeast Missouri's Hannibal doesn't mince words when it comes to highway funding, saying the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) does what it wants. State Rep. Louis Riggs (R-Hannibal) joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Missouri", saying the state Department of Transportation (MoDOT) does what it wants. Representative Riggs wants to see more highway funding for northeast Missouri. You'll be voting on a proposed constitutional amendment if Riggs has his way. His House Joint Resolution 46 proposes a constitutional amendment that would grant Missouri lawmakers the authority to veto MoDOT spending plans. Rep. Riggs also is a vocal support of eliminating Missouri's income tax. He's a senior member of the Missouri House:

Jefferson City's mayor is praising Monday's inauguration of President Donald Trump (R), describing it as an exciting day for the United States and for the world. Mayor Ron Fitzwater, a Republican, joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Missouri", telling listeners that President Trump did a great job Monday of outlining his vision for the country. Mayor Fitzwater is also pleased that U.S. Reps. Sam Graves (R-Tarkio) and Jason Smith (R-Salem) will chair the House Transportation Committee and the Ways and Means Committee this year, respectively. We also discussed Jefferson City's aging tri-level during the interview. Mayor Fitzwater tells listeners that the tri-level remains a priority, adding that Chairman Graves is well aware of the problems with it. The mayor is hopeful that Jefferson City can get some federal funding for it. The state Department of Transportation (MoDOT) says it would cost about $93-million to rebuild the tri-level and the Rex Whitton Expressway. MoDOT tells 939 the Eagle that about 86,000 vehicles a day come through the tri-level area, with three major highways converging in the same area. MoDOT says the tri-level bridges were built in 1964 and that the “flyover” bridges were built in 1991:

Missouri's governor and state lawmakers in both parties like State Reps. David Tyson Smith (D-Columbia) and Jim Schulte (R-New Bloomfield) will be in Columbia in about an hour for this morning's 10 o'clock groundbreaking ceremony for the $405-million I-70 project between Columbia and Kingdom City. This morning's ceremony takes place at the Drury Plaza hotel near Columbia's I-70 and 63 interchange. Governor Mike Parson (R) and state Highways and Transportation Commission chairman W. Dustin Boatwright of Cape Girardeau will speak at the ceremony, which will be close to the interstate. The state Department of Transportation (MoDOT) plans to add an additional lane to I-70 between the Highway 63 connector in Columbia and Highway 54 in Kingdom City. MoDOT project director Jeff Gander tells 939 the Eagle that the work will begin after the Fourth of July east of Columbia. City spokeswoman Sydney Olsen tells 939 the Eagle that Mayor Barbara Buffaloe, fourth ward councilman Nick Foster and fifth ward councilman Donald Waterman plan to attend this morning's ceremony, along with Mr. Seewood. Governor Parson joined us live this morning on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri", describing today as a big day. He talked about the decision to use state dollars, specifically general revenue, for this project. We also discussed the $50-billion state operating budget approved by state lawmakers. Governor Parson tells listeners that the next governor will likely have to do a supplemental budget. We also asked him if he'll have to call a special session this summer or fall:

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is warning about significant delays, when improvements start in a few weeks on Jefferson City's aging tri-level and on Highway 54. MoDOT says crews plan to narrow busy Highway 54 to one lane in each direction from the Senator Roy Blunt bridge in Jefferson City to Missouri Boulevard starting in mid-June and continuing through early September. MoDOT engineer Randy Aulbur joined us live this morning on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri," telling listeners that the work is needed for preventive maintenance. MoDOT says 86,000 vehicles a day come through the tri-level area, with three major highways (Highways 54, 50 and 63) converging in the same area. MoDOT says the tri-level bridges were built in 1964 and that the “flyover” bridges were built in 1991. Mr. Aulbur tells listeners that the bridges need work. He's urging you to be patient and says MoDOT will be displaying message boards:
