Potato genetics at the James Hutton Institute - Ep. 005

Play Episode Play 30 sec Highlight Listen Later Oct 6, 2023 16:13

Breeding a new potato variety is not easy. For starters, whereas most plants have two copies of each gene, potatoes have four. As a result, potatoes have a particularly large and complicated genome. Finally sequenced in 2011, a printout on paper would cover the distance from Melbourne to Cairns! Growing and screening new varieties takes time and space, making it both expensive and slow. Researchers at the James Hutton Institute in Scotland are fast tracking potato breeding. Using genetic markers, the team have identified new genes for disease resistance as well as the rapid screening techniques to detect them in tiny seedlings. With access to a massive collection of over 1,500 potato varieties, it seems likely the genes for every attribute we need is in there somewhere. In this podcast, Doctors Ingo Hein, Sanjeev Sharma and Xinwei Chen talk to PotatoLink about their research, and the exciting new world of advanced potato breeding.Link to the website: https://potatolink.com.au/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PotatoLinkAustraliaTwitter: https://twitter.com/PotatoLink_AuLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/potatolink/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/potatolink_au/ Please direct all enquiries to: info@potatolink.com.au Phone: (02) 8627 1040This podcast is part of the Hort Innovation funded project PT20000 Potato Industry Extension and Communications Program. Johnstown is synonymous with floodwaters and steel. When the city was decimated by a flood of biblical proportions in 1889, it was considered one of the worst natural disasters in American history and gained global attention. Sadly, that deluge was only the first of three major floods to claim lives and wreak havoc in the region. The destruction in the wake of the St. Patrick's Day flood in 1936 was the impetus for groundbreaking federal and local flood control measures. Multiple dam failures, including the Laurel Run Dam in July 1977, left a flooded Johnstown with a failing steel industry in ruins. Author Pat Farabaugh charts the harrowing history of Johnstown's great floods and the effects on its economic lifeblood. Pat Farabaugh is a faculty member in the Communications Program at Saint Francis University in Loretto, Pennsylvania.

This was a great interview with Sheldon and Shari Glassner. Sheldon is the instructor at the ACE Center at Hermitage Graphic Communications program. Shari is an instructional assistant at Hermitage High School. Sheldon has over the years built one of the top graphic communications programs in the state of Virginia, high school, or college. The Glassner's discuss the work they and the students do for many departments in with Henrico County Schools, Henrico government, and other school systems. Sheldon's program is a great example of the hands-on education students receive with all ACE Center programs. So many essential careers can come from Sheldon's Graphic Communications program and that what makes it important. Parents and students should look closely and consider his program when considering the different ACE Center programs. Implementing effective ethics training and communications is one of the seven steps required by the United States Federal Sentencing Guidelines for Organizations to have an overall 'effective' ethics and compliance program. This presentation will provide key methodologies that can be used to develop an organizational ethics and compliance training and communications program. Charles Giesting is the Senior Consultant of Global Ethics, Compliance, and Strategy for Integrity Leadership Partners, LLC (ILP). Prior to founding ILP, Giesting worked for over 10 years in the business ethics and compliance field starting with his advancement from a part-time company ombudsman role to local ethics officer and then finally to corporate ethics program manager for Rolls-Royce North America. Now, besides providing consulting and management services for his clients, he is active in professional associations, teaches as an adjunct instructor for Indiana Wesleyan University, and is overall more passionate than ever about helping others by using his leadership knowledge and skills in the areas of business ethics and compliance, organizational development, business strategy formulation, and implementation. Holding a bachelor's degree in engineering management from Purdue University and a master's of business administration from Indiana Wesleyan University, where his class voted him 'Outstanding Professional', Giesting founded ILP to help achieve his vision to help companies promote ethical leadership and sound business strategies.
