The Main Thing Podcast is a truly inspirational podcast that leaves listeners feeling motivated and uplifted. Hosted by Skip, this podcast features insightful conversations with a variety of guests, including Jeff, that bring back wonderful memories and impart wisdom from their experiences at the Create crowd.

One of the best aspects of The Main Thing Podcast is the approach and focus that Skip brings to each episode. With bite-sized 9-minute increments, this podcast provides quick yet meaningful insights from a diverse range of individuals. The guests on the show offer to-the-point thinking and examination, making it easy for listeners to absorb and apply these nuggets of wisdom to their own lives. It's refreshing to see such a unique approach in a sea of podcasts within the same segment.

While it's difficult to find any major flaws in The Main Thing Podcast, one minor aspect that some listeners may point out is the relatively short duration of each episode. Although the 9-minute format is great for concise and impactful discussions, some may crave longer conversations and more in-depth exploration of certain topics. However, this can also be seen as a strength as it allows for focused discussions without overwhelming listeners with excess information.

What if you could redefine your identity beyond titles and roles? How do you know which path to take when you come upon a fork in the road along life's journey? Join us, as we explore these profound questions with our remarkably wise guest, Dave Schutter. From Military to Ministry - Dave Schutter's Wisdom Journey Our special guest Dave Schutter had his sights set on a military career, dreaming of an appointment to West Point. But God had a different plan for his life. From his dreams of West Point to a transformative mission trip to Albania, Dave's journey is a testament to adaptability, faith and finding purpose. Together, we unravel the intricate balance of separating who we are from what we do, sharing experiences from his time as a military chaplain in Afghanistan and his work in pastoral ministry. It's an engaging conversation steeped in life's simple joys and the wisdom found in unexpected places.   More about Pastor Dave Schutter Dave is a military veteran, a pastor and a pizza aficionado. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, as the son of a military man, Dave dreamed of attending West Point, but a sports injury prevented him from passing the fitness entrance exam. He didn't give up on that dream and years later Dave qualified for that appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point. But he turned down that opportunity in favor of something different.   Today, Dave leads the congregation at Northwest Presbyterian Church as Senior Pastor. Notably in Dave's life, he served as a military Chaplain in the US Army, including an active deployment in Afghanistan. That tour of duty earned him the prestigious Bronze Star.   Dave Schutter graduated with a Master of Divinity degree from Covenant Theological Seminary in 1997 and earned a Master of Theology degree from Westminster Seminary in 2017. He completed his undergraduate studies at Miami (Ohio) University in 1993. Dave is also a contributor to the Jonathan Edwards Encyclopedia (Eerdmans, Fall 2017) and the Jonathan Edwards Global Sermon Editing Project.   Dave, his wife Kim, and their three children live in the Columbus Ohio area.   Resources Connect with Dave on LinkedIn Link to website for Dave's church - Northwest Presbyterian Church   Credits Editor + Technical Advisor Bob Hotchkiss Brand + Strategy Advisor Andy Malinoski PR + Partnerships Advisor Rachel Bell Marketing, Social Media and Graphic Design Chloe Lineberg   Stay Connected with Us on Social YouTube @themainthingpod Twitter @themainthingpod Instagram @themainthingpod Facebook  @TheMainThingPod LinkedIn   Help Support and Sustain This Podcast Become a subscriber. Welcome to the Main Thing Podcast, where every episode brings you a concise, high-impact wisdom lesson from one of the wisest people I know. Studying their wisdom and learning together, we all get just a little bit better at this thing called life. Jon Beck Navigating ALS with Acceptance and Gratitude If you were diagnosed with a serious, perhaps fatal, health condition, would you be able to approach it with acceptance—much less gratitude? I'm fairly certain I'd struggle to do so. Yet that's exactly what has enabled Jon Beck to get to where he is today.   Unyielding Spirit in a Father's Journey through Lou Gehrig's Disease Our special, wise guest is a new friend, a special human being with the most amazing spirit and attitude, and someone battling a fatal disease. Jon Beck is seven years into a battle with ALS. As you will hear in this powerful conversation, Jon is not defined by his disease. Though ALS will eventually take his life, he will not allow it to rob him of his joy. In this uplifting episode, you will learn the three keys to navigating any challenge, to making it through any form of adversity.   More About Our Guest Jon Beck, explored the Western United States, often by bicycle, in his younger years until one day he decided to enroll in physical therapy school at Emory University in Atlanta. While there, he met the love of his life, lisa. Shortly thereafter they got married and began having kids and raising a family.   Jon's nearly 20-year career as a physical therapist was ironically truncated by a physically debilitating disease ALS in 2017. Seven years later, Jon remains very active in his power wheelchair. He applies his background in biomechanics to good use every day. This despite the initial prognosis from doctors that he might only have two years to live.   Jon is the proud father of three adult children. They continue to provide tremendous inspiration to him, as does his wife, Lisa.   Jon Beck spoke with us from his home in St Albans, West Virginia, USA.   Resources Connect with Jon on Facebook Book recommended by Jon: “The Road Less Traveled” by M. Tune into an enlightening conversation with Dr. Shannon Wheatley Hartman, president of the Interactivity Foundation. She reveals how an exploratory mindset opens doors to innovative thinking and community building. Drawing inspiration from her mentor, Dr. Jack Byrd, Shannon shares invaluable lessons on being present and supportive in our interactions. We dive into the foundation's commitment to nurturing democratic skills like generous interpretation and comfort with ambiguity, underscoring the ongoing importance of fostering wisdom in our everyday lives.   More About Our Wise Guest - Dr. Shannon Wheatley Hartman Shannon Wheatley Hartman is the President of the Interactivity Foundation, a nonpartisan and non-advocacy organization founded decades ago in Parkersburg, WV. Join me for a powerful exploration of the influence of language in our lives in this special, debut edition of “Skip's Quips.”   Today, I share a wisdom lesson that highlights the profound impact words can have on our bodies and minds. A seemingly innocent phrase once caused me to faint in my doctor's office. This incident underscores how words can trigger intense physical reactions, from fear to laughter. By sharing this experience, I hope to illustrate the incredible influence words wield, not only in causing fear but also in creating positive outcomes.   In addition to this personal tale, we explore the broader implications of our language choices. Words have the power to either uplift or deflate us—and those around us. As you head into the coming week, I challenge you to reflect on how your words might affect others. Whether it's offering encouragement to a friend, family member, or teammate, remember that your words hold significant power. Let's harness the power of words to shape our experiences and reactions positively.   Where's the Special Guest and What's a “Skip's Quip?"   We are doing something a little different. I'll be sharing a wisdom lesson with you—but there won't be a guest. Just me, sharing wisdom. A short wisdom lesson - about 9 minutes total. We plan to do these about 6 times a year. We're calling these special editions - “Skip's Quips.”   Don't worry, we will still bring you wisdom conversations with our special guests twice a month. Additionally, you will receive “Skip's Quips” to supplement to our regular wisdom programming. Let us know what you think, and please share your feedback. Welcome to The Main Thing Podcast. I'm your host Skip Lineberg, and I'm thrilled to bring you this very special episode.   Along with millions of business professionals around the world, I discovered Tom Peters in the early 1980s with his break-out, best-selling book In Search of Excellence. I was captivated by Tom's fresh way of looking at companies, cultures and customers. Tom and his co-author Bob Waterman introduced a new lexicon of phrases that colored business thinking … and leadership. Tom's book influenced my choice of college major and my career path.   In 2004, I met Tom Peters at his Re-Imagine Summit where I had the great blessing of spending 48 hours with Tom and his passionate ideas for reforming American business. Tom's ice breaker question at the town hall. Helped me to discover my purpose.   Today, almost 20 years later, you'll not only hear how I answered Tom's own soul-piercing question, you will also hear about his terrific new book Tom Peters' Compact Guide to Excellence.   Tom was born and raised in Maryland. He studied Civil Engineering at Cornell University and served in the US Navy. After his military service, Tom moved to California and earned his MBA and PhD from Stanford University. He began his distinguished career in business consulting with the firm McKinsey and Associates. In 1981, Tom founded The Skunkworks Inc., The Palo Alto Consulting Center, and The Tom Peters Company. Tom has written more than 20 books over the course of his career.   After residing many years in Vermont, Tom and wife Susan Sargent now live near Buzzard's Bay in South Dartmouth, MA.   Strap in for this power-packed episode and discover why Tom Peters is one of the wisest people I know.   Resources Tom Peters website Check out Tom Peters' Compact Guide to Excellence on Amazon   Stay Connected with Us Twitter @themainthingpod Instagram @themainthingpod Facebook - @TheMainThingPod LinkedIn - The MainThing Podcast   Credits Editor + Technical Advisor Bob Hotchkiss Brand + Strategy Advisor Andy Malinoski Public Relations + Partnerships Advisor Rachel Bell   Ready to Help Support the Growth of this Podcast?
