    Vernon L. Smith: Economist, Professor, and Nobel Laureate

    Vernon L. Smith is the George L. Argyros Chair in Finance and Economics and President, International Foundation for Research in Experimental Economics at Chapman University. Vernon L. Smith, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002 “for having established laboratory experiments as a tool in empirical economic analysis, especially in the study of alternative market mechanisms,” has held appointments at Purdue University, Stanford University, Brown University, University of Massachusetts, USC, California Institute of Technology, University of Arizona, University of Alaska-Anchorage, George Mason University, and Chapman University. Professor Smith received his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from California Institute of Technology (1949), his masters in Economics from the University of Kansas (1951), and his Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard (1955). He has authored or co-authored over 290 articles and books on capital theory, finance, natural resource economics, experimental economics, and the housing origins of economic instability, 1920-2014. Professor Smith is a Fellow of the Econometric Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Purdue University awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Management degree in 1989. Dr. Smith was elected member of the National Academy of Science in 1995. In 1996 he received Cal Tech's Distinguished Alumni Award. He became Kansan of the year (Topeka Gazette) in 2002, received a Distinguished Alumni award from the University of Kansas in 2011 and in 2014 an Honorary Doctor of Science degree. He has served on numerous editorial and editorial advisory boards, and as president of several national economic associations.     Siri Terjesen, PhD, joins the Department of Management Programs at FAU as a full professor and Dean's Distinguished Research Fellow. Prior to joining the Florida Atlantic University College of Business, Terjesen held a similar position at American University in Washington D.C. She also has an on-going joint faculty appointment with the Norwegian School of Economics in Bergen, Norway. Additionally, while completing her master's degree in economics from the Norwegian School, Terjesen earned the distinction of being a Fulbright Scholar.Terjesen is a prolific scholar whose research has examined various aspects of entrepreneurship and international business. Her work has been cited more than 8,500 times and she has published more than 65 refereed journal articles as well as several cases and book chapters. Her research has appeared in leading academic journals including the Academy of Management Review, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of World Business, Journal of Management, Journal of Business Ethics, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Small Business Economics, Journal of Operations Management, and many more.     Amir Javadinia, Ph.D., is a new assistant professor in the Marketing Department at the Florida Atlantic University College of Business. Professor Javadinia recently earned his Ph.D. in marketing from the University of South Carolina and his research uses big data to investigate issues in marketing strategy, especially at the intersection of marketing and finance. Using data from the automobile industry, Professor Javadinia's research examined the effects of product recalls on firm financial performance and market reactions.     Mary Anastasia O'Grady writes "The Americas," a weekly column on politics, economics and business in Latin America and Canada that appears every Monday in The Wall Street Journal. Ms. O'Grady joined The Wall Street Journal in August 1995 and became a senior editorial page writer in December 1999. She was appointed an editorial board member in November 2005. She is also a member of the board of directors of the Indianapolis­-based Liberty Fund.In 2012 Ms. O’Grady won the Walter Judd Freedom Award from The Fund for American Studies. In 2009 Ms. O'Grady received the Thomas Jefferson Award from The Association of Private Enterprise Education. In 2005 Ms. O'Grady won the Bastiat Prize for Journalism awarded by the International Policy Network for her articles on the World Bank, the underground economy in Brazil and the bad economic advice the U.S. often gives to Latin American countries.     Terry L. Anderson has been a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution since 1998 and is currently the John and Jean DeNault Senior Fellow. He is the past president of the Property and Environment Research Center in Bozeman, MT, and a Professor Emeritus at Montana State University where he won many teaching awards during his 25 year career.Dr. Anderson is one of the founders of “free market environmentalism,” the idea of using markets and property rights to help solve environmental problems. In 2015 the third edition of his book by that title was published, co-authored with Don Leal. Terry is author or editor of 39 books, including most recently, Unlocking the Wealth of Indian Nations (2016), exploring the institutional underpinnings of American Indian reservation economies.In addition to publishing books and articles in academic journals, Terry Anderson speaks around the world and is often featured in the popular press, including frequent editorials in the Wall Street Journal.     Carol Alexander is Professor of Finance at Sussex and Co-Editor of the Journal of Banking and Finance. Prior academic appointments were as Chair of Financial Risk Management at the ICMA Centre in the Henley Business School at Reading (1999 – 2012) and lecturer in Mathematics and Economics at the University of Sussex (1985 - 1998). She holds degrees from the University of Sussex (BSc First Class, Mathematics with Experimental Psychology; PhD Algebraic Number Theory) and the London School of Economics (MSc Econometrics and Mathematical Economics). She also has an Honorary Professorship at the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest, Romania.Carol has also held several positions in financial institutions: Fixed Income Trader at UBS/Phillips and Drew (UK); Academic Director of Algorithmics (Canada); Director of Nikko Global Holdings and Head of Market Risk Modeling (UK); Risk Research Advisor, SAS (USA). She also acts as an expert witness and consultant in financial modeling. From 2010 – 2012 Carol was Chair of the Board of PRMIA (Professional Risk Manager's International Association).She publishes widely on a broad range of topics, including: volatility theory; option pricing and hedging; trading volatility; hedging with futures; alternative investments; random orthogonal matrix simulation; game theory and real options. She has written and edited numerous books in mathematics and finance and published extensively in top-ranked international journals. Her four-volume textbook on Market Risk Analysis (Wileys, 2008) is the definitive guide to the subject. Originally from Brazil, he is now a U.S. citizen, and he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Kent in England.
