A conversation with children's book author, Anandamayi Baker, about her inspiration for writing Bee-Coming Strong.  You can find Anandamayi Baker online at: https://anandamayibaker.com/ A note from Anandamayi Baker:As a child growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, nature served me as a protective friend. I would spend countless hours studying ants on their journey to and from their nests, fascinated by how they walked in continuous streams of small black lines, always seeming to know just what they were doing. Just being with these seemingly insignificant little beings was so calming to me. It helped me forget all my troubles and challenges by bringing me into an entirely different universe. Whether it was being with ants, lizards, frogs, bees, trees or weeds, nature uplifted me. My grandfather was a tremendous influence on me in terms of piquing my interest in the natural world. He was the one who helped us build boxes out of cardboard and collect the monarch caterpillars so that we could study them up close. It was a mind-blowing mystery for me to be able to feed them and observe as each became a beautiful chrysalis, complete with what looked like tiny golden jewels encircling it. And to watch them hatch? Pure and utter delight and wonder, a phenomenon that is amazing to see at any age. After graduating from UC Davis, I lived in both Idaho and Arizona, finally settling in southern California after finding my spiritual home with the Yoga Center of California. For many years I was blessed to work on magnificent Palomar Mountain in San Diego County, serving in the store and restaurant that are owned by the Yoga Center.  Living on Palomar placed me in a wonderland for engaging nature. The innumerable stars at night, the brilliant blue skies in the day, the heady fragrance of the pines and oaks, the rocks, butterflies, birds – a feast for all the senses. And I was completely charmed by the bees who used to walk around the palms of my hands when I meditated outside in the forest. It felt magical. When children connect with nature something marvelous can manifest. I think it is one of the most important gifts we can give them. Feeling connected to nature can be transformative for children, allowing them to move beyond themselves and their challenges into something much greater and grander. It can help foster a respect for nature and for life itself, which I believe is crucial not only for our beleaguered planet, but also for helping us appreciate the interdependence of all of life. Children who feel at home in nature tend to become more inquisitive about this incredible planet we share. Feeling connected to nature can help children and adults alike feel happier and more whole and inquisitive about this incredible planet we share. I desire to plant seeds of curiosity about life both within and around us. I want to share tools that have enabled me to find inner peace and fulfillment beyond my dreams. What I write about comes from my own experiences. I hope you find some gems that will serve you and your children. Together we may thrive!Connect with us! What began as a well-intentioned playdate for kids of color at a Bay Area elementary school quickly spiraled into something very different. That playdate on August 27th sparked anger online, as right wing groups seized on it to cry “racism,” and that eventually led to a bomb threat today that forced the evacuation of the school. We'd love to think this is an isolated incident, but sadly, this kind of viral hate is more and more common, and often leads to terrible violence. We've seen it at schools and universities around the country, in mass shootings from coast to coast, in last week's killing of a shopkeeper who displayed a Pride flag outside her store in Southern California. Thankfully, no one was hurt today at Chabot Elementary School in Oakland, which was safely evacuated before classes even began. Police spent hours searching and found nothing dangerous. But the incident sent hundreds of kids home for the day, canceling a day of school, and terrified and terrorized a community, which will now have to come to grips with this and all its fallout, and it all started because of one parent's post on social media. For more on this, KCBS political reporter discussed with KCBS anchors, Bret Burkhart and Patti Reising.

Asher is an expert in human health, development and education and provides quality information to parents and teachers to help improve parenting, teaching and childhood development. Asher's most powerful experiences as a child were all involving Nature. Experiencing the contrast between a public education devoid of Nature connection, and then a Steiner education rich in Nature connection – left him with strong impressions of what is most important for learning and life.  On this quest, he has studied holistic health, human development, kinesiology, education, business, media, and natural sciences. If all that wasn't enough Asher is also an Integrated Movement Specialist level 2 and Holistic Lifestyle Coach level 2 with the CHEK institute. And has recently published 2 books: Connecting Children to Nature: the Essential guide for parents and teachers & The Soil Big Book, an illustrated book on soil science. However the more Asher learnt, the more he discovered the challenges and damages that modern life is having on current and future generations – and he became passionate about helping to overcome them. After meeting geologist John Rowntree in 2016, he was invited to join the Life Rocks team. John, seeing his passion for earth science education, quickly made him CEO. Since then, The team and I have evolved Life Rocks into a non-for-profit foundation always working hard to bring joy, education and nature to children, parents and teachers through fun, scientific and interactive experiences, media, books, games and workshops. Asher also records The Life Rocks Podcast where he interviews other passionate leaders in childhood education and development and provides a platform for those interested in helping future and current generations thrive.  Find Asher here www.liferocks.school www.facebook.com/LifeRocks.School/ www.instagram.com/liferocks.school/

We parents often bemoan the amount of time our kids spend on screens of one sort or another, even as we know those electronic devices also have benefits – and, no doubt, are here to stay. But balance is important for people of all ages, and what better way to find balance than by getting out into nature? A wealth of research highlights the benefits of outdoor experience for physical health, focus, creativity, problem-solving and mental health, much thanks to the stress-reducing effects of being in nature. Welcome to this episode examining the relationship between children and nature. Today we  eavesdrop on some of our younger ParkBathers as they experience forest bathing in Crystal Palace park. We're also exploring our own experiences  of nature from childhood – and how that relationship influences us and changes over time. We delve into the inevitable subject of how little children spend in nature and while we're not going to demonise screens and technology, we take a stark look at how damaging overuse of screens can be for children's mental health, their sleep, mood and general wellbeing. (if you want some tips on managing your kid's tech time look up my interview with Dr Fintan Nagal from Series 1)Kirsten looks at the research suggesting that a connection to nature is our biological imprint - we have an affinity for the natural world. When children spend most of their time indoors, they miss out on that connection and become alienated from nature which triggers a host of issues, depression, obesity, and attention deficit disorder. Kids who have direct access to nature are better learners. Exposure to nature has been shown to reduce stress and increase attention spans. So, we're going to talk about the sense of awe and wonder being in nature evokes and show you exactly what happened when we took a group of teenagers on a forest bathing walk. — Dancing Jaguar's Spirit Camp was created to help children connect to their inner world.  By doing that, children start learning at an incredibly young age that, as human beings, we are made up of mind, body, and spirit.  And all three of those aspects need to be nurtured and cared for so we can grow up to become healthy adults. By doing this work with children, Eva Goulette feels that there will be a shift in child development.  This is an element of child development that we have not seen that much because there is so much focus on children's minds and bodies, and until very recently, not much focus on nurturing the essence of who they are. It's amazing to see the incredible impact Spirit Camp has on the lives on children. All of a sudden, they are learning that there is a whole world inside of them that they can connect with and help keep themselves healthy and whole.  Eva feels hopeful that we are creating a global movement that is empowering children with a knowledge that has not typically been shared with them. It is our hope that they will grow into adults who possess a level of self-awareness that will bring in a new level of compassion and respect for themselves, their families, the communities, and the world.  The world is ready, and the children are waiting. Valeria Teles interviews Eva Goulette — the author of “Soul Mission: Leaders Ushering in the New Earth.” Eva Goulette is the founder of Dancing Jaguar's Spirit Camp, a program created to teach children the importance of balance between mind, body, and spirit. To reach as many children as possible, Eva shares her specialized Spirit Camp curriculum with adults through her Spirit Camp Teacher Training Program. Her mission is to empower and inspire the children of today so they can create the world of tomorrow, a world where all of us will thrive. She loves seeing children connect to their inner wisdom, as they discover they're connected to All That Is.  Her love of children and spiritual modalities combine to empower children with hands-on training to become peaceful warriors raising the vibration and consciousness of our planet.  Eva believes the children are the ones ushering in the new Earth ~ she is simply providing the roadmap that enables them to discover their authentic self and to let their spirits soar. To learn more about Eva Goulette and her work, please visit: https://www.dancingjaguarinspirations.com/   — This podcast is a quest for well-being, a quest for a meaningful life through the exploration of fundamental truths, enlightening ideas, insights on physical, mental, and spiritual health. We also dive into the tools that city officials and engaged citizens alike can use to advocate for the rights of all children to play outside. Show Notes:About the Children & Nature NetworkUrban Nature: Promoting Nature in Cities, Children & Nature NetworkCreating Systems Level Change in Cities: A Toolkit, Children & Nature NetworkAdvancing Equity in Children's Connections to Nature, Cities Connecting Children to Nature (Children & Nature Network + National League of Cities)The Urgent Case for Green Schoolyards During and After Covid-19, by Sarah Milligan-Toffler and Richard LouvTo Build a Healthier City, Atlanta is Opening its Schoolyards to Everyone, by Monica Humphries (Nationwell)Policy Spotlight: Georgia Creates Outdoor Learning Committee (National Caucus of Environmental Legislation)How the City of Grand Rapids Became a Leader in Connecting Children to Nature, by Alejandra Pallais (National League of Cities)We're Here, You Just Don't See Us, by Latria Graham (Outside)Register for Sum of Us: A Conversation with Heather McGee and Dr. Gail Christopher, presented by the Children & Nature Network (June 10, 2021 at 1:00pm).Due to the increasing spread of Covid-19, we are taking the 2021 Biophilic Leadership Summit virtual. The preservation of the language usually falls to families. Vanitha Veerasamy started Vaaranam Children's Books as a way to get her own child engaged in her mother tongue, and as a resource for other Tamil children living in Australia. Asher Cloran is an author, speaker, independent researcher and is co-owner in a company called LifeRocks! which creates science based education resources to help connect children to the magic of nature.  Asher has written a book called "Connecting Children to Nature: The Essential Guide for Parents and Teachers". The book provides a balanced and practical perspective on how to help our children, and ourselves, stay connected to nature in a technological world - although it is mostly aimed at early learning and development.  Alongside the LifeRocks! team, Asher spends time creating interactive nature based games that inspire a life long, and hands on connection to the natural world in a way that stimulates learning, awareness and fun.  Asher believes that the way to protect this earth and each other, is to create deep connections to Nature and our own nature. When humanity feels connected to the world around us, we create life rather than destroy it  - so connection to the natural world is more important than ever.  It is Asher's and the team at LifeRocks! mission to help children stay connected to Nature, through learning, interactivity, and playfulness, which will assist in creating a  future world where humanity is in partnership with nature, and works co-operatively and creatively with the Earth.  Asher has been personally deeply involved in the studies of nature, physiology, psychology, food production, childhood development, eastern arts and learning which has helped cultivate the views, content, perspectives and motivations that Asher shares in his work. https://www.liferocks.com.au At the top of the show, it's Anastasia's Starseed News! Now it is like pulling teeth to get them to learn from old crusty Mom. They do not want to be bothered with it (sometimes). It is my sincere hope that as I lead by example they will come back around ( and they have in bits and pieces) to see their birth right and how amazing life can be as an intuitive and playing with the Devine energies. Do your children hear/see/smell/sense spirits? Do you see them getting scared at things you can not see, understand or explain? Tune in for answers!
