How should you spend your day when you work for yourself? Of course, there is no such thing as a typical day when you run your own business (which can be a problem for you if you're used to structure!). But given that your time is largely yours to organise it's useful to be intentional about what you prioritise. In today's show I talk about two concepts to help you organise your time around what's really important. I will divide activities in to three categories - big rocks, small rocks and sand. I also talk about Stephen Covey's Time Management Matrix. This episode will help you: Make time for what moves the dial in your business Prioritise self-care and creative time Stop yourself getting distracted by ‘fun tasks' without neglecting the fun stuff altogether! You can read my blog about the ‘Flow' concept discussed in this episode and don't forget to join Corporate Escapees on Facebook if you haven't already. There's tonnes of advice and support over there to help you navigate your way through the journey towards doing what you love for a living. Not everyone who leaves their corporate job to start their own business does it entirely out of choice. A significant number of people feel self employment is their only option because the conventional workplace doesn't work for them. Today's guest, Ursula Tavender, couldn't find a job that that suited how she wanted to live her life as a parent—certainly not without making sacrifices she didn't want to make! So she set up her own business, helping change that story for other women. Now advising government and working with organistaions to create more flexible working arrangements, especially helping managers understand how their attitudes need to change in order to do flex well. In our interview we talk about how Ursula set up her business, her experiences of trying to get back in to conventional work, and how to make flex work better. In particular we talk about how to get started if you want to work more flexibly either as you transition out of your job entirely, or alongside your part time business, or because that would actually mean you don't have to leave your job at all! Find out more about Ursula's work at the Mumbelievable website, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. The report for the Gender Equality and Economic Empowerment office that I contributed to is on Ursula's website and worth a read. Your career path isn't always a straight line. And the job that you do now or are thinking of doing next might not have even existed when you were having your meeting with your career's adviser all those years ago! This is one of the reasons we get itchy feet. We see an alternative way of combining our experiences that would enable us to do something for a living that was just not possible a decade or two ago but we're stuck in the more conventional path that was the norm when we were first planning our adult career. Tim Tavender runs courses helping people create online courses but he started professional life as a PE teacher. Since then he's pulled together pieces of experience from all over his personal and professional life to become, first a digital marketer and now an online courses expert – businesses that simply didn't exist when he was at school. The driver for change was his family and the desire to be more present to his own health and the wellbeing of his wife and kids. In this interview we talk about: How to leverage your past experiences to design a new business Starting with your ideal client when you think about what business to be in Niching down (finding your starving crowd) How to turn off your inferiority complex and come up with your own ideas Valuing your expertise, even if it comes easy to you How to create online courses that work for You as well as for your clients You can find out more about Tim on his website, LinkedIn or on his podcast. As always, you can stay in touch with us on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter the Corporate Escapees group page and of course, the website.
Nicki is a former Army Officer who spent 17 years developing people in conflict zones around the world and now runs courses to help people develop their resilience. There are so many ups and downs in life and it can sometimes feel like you don't have the strength to carry on, or even get started. But within us all is a resilience we don't normally acknowledge and, if you can tap in to it, you can overcome those slings and arrows that life chucks in your direction (especially when you are trying to do something NEW) and not only survive but thrive as a result. In this interview we talk about Nicki's own journey, her army career and her decision to leave after 17 years and set up her own business. AND we talk about this concept of resilience, and how to grow and become stronger as a result of the experiences that happen to us in life OR from experiences we intentionally put ourselves through. I spend much more of my time marketing myself and getting my name and expertise known in the world than I actually do coaching or speaking to audiences. And this might come as a shock to you if you're still working a 9-5 or starting to run your own venture. Putting yourself out there doesn't come naturally to most of us but it's a vital part of being in business and, in some ways, it's never been so complicated. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin not to mention blogging, podcasting and, email marketing... where do you start? That's why I wanted to talk to Janet Murray. Janet is a former journalist who specialises in helping people grow their audience so they can succeed in business. In her podcast, free content and courses she shows how to position yourself as the go to person and create a following of people who want to buy the thing you do. In this interview we talk about: Transitioning out of your current job and how long that can take Pivoting until you find your niche Email marketing Creating a following and creating content as a way to position yourself as an expert Being able to finish the sentence “He/She is the person you go to if you want...” You can find out more about Janet on her website where she has tonnes of free resources to download plus her brilliant podcast, The Janet Murray Show. It's my first solo show for a while and I was inspired by member of the Corporate Escapees Facebook page to do an episode about making a Worst Case Scenario Plan. When you stand on the precipice of a big decision all the fears come bubbling to the surface. But they swill around in your brain in a mess of half finished thoughts and cause you to feel paralysed. Even if, despite these fears, you take action steps, you lose out on the joy of this phase of the journey because you're so worried about what you'll do if it all goes wrong. Which is why I want to explain to you how to make a Worst Case Scenario Plan. In this way you get those fears out of your head and on to paper and start working through them step by step. Once you know what you'd do in the worst case you're free to focus on success! Please join the Corporate Escapees group no matter what stage you're at in the journey and even if you don't consider you've come from a “corporate” job - any conventional 9-5 type job to any form of freedom, doing what you love for a living, living on your own terms counts! Stay in touch with us on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and of course, the website.
Just because living life on your own terms might feel like a gamble, doesn't mean you don't try to minimise the risk! If you've considered becoming a digital nomad or just turning your back on the 9-5 and doing something you love from the comfort of your own sofa, you'll love listening to the very practical advice Todd has to share. I wonder how many of us fall in to a career, and then make a real success at it before we realise that it's not working for us. Of course, that creates a whole new problem. What are you going to do next? Well, that's the story for my guest today. Dav Piper is now a gardener. But until recently her life was much like many people - the commute, the salary that's hard to walk away from, a job that didn't really work for her. She was successful by conventional standards but had fallen in to her career and slowly, like many of us, realised that she didn't want to carry on. Of course, the next big problem was - what to do next? Dav describes a very real dilemma. We don't all know what we want to do with our lives! It's all very well to say we want to get out of the corporate rat race and do something we love for a living... but what?? In this interview we talk about how she found out what she wanted to do, and the gentle steps she took to make it happen... steps that anyone could take to make that transition a little less risky. We discuss: Money and how your reliable salary can become a trap that keeps you stuck How to work out what you want to do The dangers of looking for a big, world transforming purpose in life Starting a business as a side hustle How to cut your financial outgoings to reduce your financial risk Volunteering as a way in to a new career Starting to charge and how to find business Having a Saturday job as an adult You can find out more about Dav on her website, her Facebook page and her blog. Dav mentioned Fiverr as a place to buy services like logos and websites. Check it out at https://www.fiverr.com/ As I mentioned, I've renamed my Facebook Group and it is now called Corporate Escapees. Speaking of podcasts, I’ve appeared on quite a few in recent weeks, including Mixergy’s Startup Stories, Becoming Superhuman, No Ego, Productivityist and What You Will Learn. You can find those episodes wherever you get your podcasts and in the show notes to this episode. Of course, there are many ways you can support the launch, all of which are outlined over at employeetoentrepreneur.io/support Now for today’s episode, which is a recording of a fireside chat with my good friend and colleague, Shay Namdarian, as well as an audience Q&A, at the Melbourne leg of the Employee to Entrepreneur book launch. --- Show Notes: Support the Book Launch www.employeetoentrepreneur.io/support Podcast Appearances Startup Stories: https://collectivecamp.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c675fe6ab1a62dc586da0b61d&id=99ff1a93f1&e=366f85aef3 Becoming Superhuman: https://becomingasuperhuman.com/making-the-transition-to-becoming-an-entrepreneur-steve-glaveski/ No Ego: https://collectivecamp.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c675fe6ab1a62dc586da0b61d&id=6b44cde947&e=366f85aef3 Corporate Escapees: https://collectivecamp.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c675fe6ab1a62dc586da0b61d&id=d104a11604&e=366f85aef3 The Power of Bold: https://collectivecamp.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c675fe6ab1a62dc586da0b61d&id=0cdfadf9e8&e=366f85aef3 Grit & Hustle: https://gritandhustle.co/steve-glaveski/ The Hustle & Flowchart Podcast: https://collectivecamp.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=c675fe6ab1a62dc586da0b61d&id=915fcb425e&e=366f85aef3

If you had to define it, could you clearly say what it means for a company to be a “lifestyle brand?” When Josh Stanton first started on his entrepreneurial journey he didn’t know either. In fact, it was the furthest thing from his mind. He just needed to make some money. His story goes something like this: After a very short stint studying engineering at university, he was exhausted and not enjoying what he was doing, and his Dad recognized the problem. He told Josh, “You don’t have to do this. You can do whatever you want.” Josh says that was the conversation that enabled him to understand that it was OK for him to take control of his own life and not follow the path everyone else does. So he did. Today, most people know Josh as one half of the dynamic team behind Screw The Nine To Five, the company and community aimed at becoming the #1 lifestyle brand in the world. In this conversation you’ll hear the backstory of how Josh and his wife have gone from owning random online businesses that felt a lot like corporate jobs, to leaders of an energizing community that empowers those seeking lifestyle freedom. If Josh can make money selling a goldfish book, you can be an entrepreneur too The first thing Josh Stanton did to move into the realm of online business was to hire someone to research and ghostwrite a book about the care and feeding of goldfish. Sounds like a strange topic, but he had his reasons. The book was written, Josh got it formatted, put it on Amazon, and began selling it - to the tune of $15,000 in total sales. It may not sound like much of a business… but most people never step out to create anything of their own. $15K earned from a simple book, in his first attempt, was all it took for Josh to see that he really could support himself independent of someone else writing him a paycheck. Your first effort as an entrepreneur doesn’t have to be world-changing. In fact, it’s probably better if it’s not. The lessons you learn in those initial forays into the online business world are what teach you the things you need to know in order to make a difference over the long haul. Josh describes his own meandering path to success in detail in this conversation. Why Josh Stanton sold money-making businesses to pursue something greater As Josh and Jill become more successful as entrepreneurs, they had their hands in many different types of online businesses. There were many affiliate relationships, skin care brands, health care products that filled their bank account each month. The Screw The Nine To Five Community was also starting to take off. But it wasn’t as satisfying as Josh had assumed it would be. All those unrelated, random businesses started to feel like drudgery, something he didn’t really want to work on anymore. Sounds kind of like a corporate job, doesn’t it? After discussing what they really wanted to contribute to the world, Josh and Jill decided to sell those businesses and put all their focus into Screw The Nine To Five. That decision proves to have been exactly the right choice for them. They have plans to make it the #1 Lifestyle Brand in the world. Their focus now is on helping others achieve success in three specific areas: business, health, and life. How does one go about building a world-changing lifestyle brand? Josh reveals the ups and the downs of the Screw The Nine To Five journey, in this episode of Corporate Escapees. Do you know how to make the decision about who your ideal customer is? When Josh and Jill first began Screw The Nine To Five they were focused on helping people start businesses and develop ways of producing side income. All of that is fine, but they discovered that many people were following along without committing to make their own lifestyle dreams happen. That’s when they decided to narrow their focus by identifying their ideal customers. Rather than targeting anyone who was interested in learning about generating online income they decided to find those who are truly ready to start their own business. That subtle shift has enabled them to scale their business faster than ever before. In this conversation Josh describes how they’ve learned to identify that target audience, how strategic partnerships enable them to help their audience with less effort, and why Facebook Ads have turned out to be unreliable in terms of long-term business success. Most people in the Build Live Give community have already discovered that climbing the corporate ladder is not a good plan for building the freedom and lifestyle they really want. In this podcast conversation, you’re going to hear Kate Erickson recount the painful journey to discovering those truths for herself. Her experience is sadly, a very common one for those who think they will find fulfilment and success by pursuing a corporate career. The inflexibility and lack of control that come from being employed in a corporate position were things Kate decided she simply could not live with. Sound familiar? In this conversation, Kate describes how her hunger for true freedom and control over her own destiny grew until she couldn't stand it any longer. That's when she made the decision to leave her job within 6 months. And she did. Kate’s story will not only demonstrate the frustration that comes from being trapped in a corporate job but also what can happen when bold steps are taken to gain control of your destiny. Be sure to listen. Kate crushed it for 3 ½ years in corporate. She was never promoted. She got no raises. One of the most frustrating things about trying to climb the corporate ladder is that those at the top always seem to be adding rungs to it - so those who are still climbing never seem to make progress. It’s one example of how working in any corporate position puts you in a place where you're not the master of your own destiny. Somebody further up the corporate ladder has the final say over whether you are rewarded for your efforts or not. For Kate Erickson, it took a painfully disappointing situation to show her how helpless she really was staying in her corporate job. In this conversation, Kate tells the story of how she was put forward as the ideal candidate for an exciting new position at the company where she worked, was interviewed, and was even told how perfect she was for the position - only to have the new role offered to someone from outside the company. It was the crushing disappointment that set Kate on an entirely new course in life, one that she has never regretted. “I had done everything corporate asked me to do and wasn’t getting anywhere.” ~ Kate Erickson When Kate Erickson was not offered the position that her own hiring manager told her was a perfect fit for her, she began to rethink her definition of success. She had performed exceptionally in her role within the company. She had done everything that her superiors had asked. But it didn't get her anywhere. That's when Kate decided she wanted to find a way to live a life of freedom, not one that was controlled by someone who had climbed higher on the corporate ladder than she had. Within six months she had resigned from her position and started her own marketing business. But it wasn't an immediate success and she went back to another corporate job soon after. Listen to hear how Kate wound up back trying to climb the corporate ladder and how she eventually learned that corporate life was not the life she was meant to live. It’s on this episode of Corporate Escapees. If you reach for the life of your dreams it isn't going to come easily Leaving corporate was definitely the first step in the right direction for Kate. But even after experiencing a good deal of entrepreneurial success, she admits that there were still many difficulties along the way that had to be addressed. One of the things she mentions as an example of the ongoing hard work required to build the life you want is the difficulty of pulling together an outstanding team. Finding the right people, creating the right environment and team dynamic, and nurturing a healthy team culture are all challenges that entrepreneurs have to face as they scale their business. But it is the hard work to create those things that enable you to reap rewards of the lifestyle you've always dreamed of. Kate shares both the joys and the struggles of her entrepreneurial journey on this episode. We all have dreams, but some will never be realized by remaining in a corporate job Kate Erickson loves to travel… and her corporate job didn’t come close to fulfilling that desire. She recalls a time when she had planned a special trip to Hawaii while she was still in her corporate career and after much planning and dreaming, her time off request was denied. That’s one of the events that caused her to determine that she was going to set herself up in a way that she'd never have to ask anyone for permission to travel again. Since 2014 she and her partner John have intentionally taken trips as a part of the lifestyle they have chosen. It's one of the rewards of many years of hard work that have finally put them in a place where they have the time, the resources, and the ability to go where they want, when they want, with who they want. Kate says this is something she would never have been able to experience had she continued trying to climb the corporate ladder. Kate's story is inspiring and motivating, and it's one you'll want to hear, so be sure you listen.
