Virgin Media Research Highlights the Importance of Play for Mental Health and Well-being

To coincide with National Play Day, which runs from July 13 -21, with the theme, 'Time to Play', Virgin Media, in partnership with Ipsos B&A, has commissioned research to highlight the crucial role of play in enhancing well-being and overall quality of life. The research reveals alarming statistics such as three in five young people are experiencing burnout, with those under 35 significantly more affected (61%) compared to older generations (12%). The study also found that young people are less satisfied with their quality of life, with around 59% of young adults being overall satisfied with the quality of life compared to 80% of those over 65. Despite these challenges, an overwhelming 86% of young people want to incorporate more play into their lives. Also surprisingly was the finding that 57% of respondents agree that play is more important than financial success. The research underscores the serious barriers to play, including time commitments, not having the required energy or head space, the cost-of-living crisis, and loneliness. As a result, 65% of respondents feel that the government should do more to encourage play, while 63% believe brands have a role to play. The findings reveal that 38% of young adults believe Irish people are too serious for play, compared to only 20% of those over 65. It also found that 56% of 25-34 year olds think other countries engage in more play than Ireland does. This sentiment underscores the need for societal change in attitudes towards play, with 65% advocating for government action and nearly half supporting the idea of a national play day for adults and children. As summer is upon us, 39% of Irish adults expressed a desire to go on holiday more frequently, specifically to engage in play. With 87% agreeing that play improves quality of life, the call for accessible and affordable play activities is louder than ever. Richard Hogan of TherapyInstitute.ie highlights the importance of play: "Play is not a frivolous activity, it's a fundamental component of our lives. From online virtual reality adventures to real life play and connection, play increases brain functions, decreased stress and improves wellbeing overall. Play is not just for children, it's for all of us at all stages in life." Paul Higgins, VP of Commercial at Virgin Media, said: "Virgin Media believes in the power of Play and this survey underlines the role our products and services have in providing connection, learning and entertainment - all key to play. With those products and services being used more and more we continue to enable digital play as our homes have become our offices, gyms, gaming hubs and cinemas. "With Virgin Media bringing Ireland's best broadband to more areas nationwide it allows more customers to escape into a world of play, and this increased usage and in home experience can empower our customers to unleash their play, in whatever way they choose." New customers can add Virgin Media Streaming TV with Loaded TV to their broadband package for as little as €15 per month for 12 months and €34 per month thereafter. Existing Broadband customers can add Streaming TV at any time and can add an extra Streaming TV box or upgrade their current box depending on their circumstances. Paul Higgins, VP of Consumer of Virgin Media said, "We are delighted to finally bring this incredible and exciting new Virgin Media product to our customers. With its award-winning design, the TV streaming box is as unique as it is compact. "We also understand how imperative it is to keep sustainability at the forefront of our business goals and objectives when we bring a new product onto the market. Thanks to its small size, its subsequent packaging is also relatively small and kept to a minimum. "Virgin Media Streaming TV also comes packed with a number of user-centric features across live TV and streaming apps, giving each of our customers a bespoke experience so, no matter what your TV viewing style is, you can play it your way." After a few shows at various golf clubs, we're back at Australian Golf HQ today, and there's a lot to discuss in the world of golf!We start the show with Mark making and admission about something he did whenever he played in Singapore or Malaysia; and he then asks Nick for some advice on his game, as Nick is now Mark's unofficial golf coach. But to more important things - the golf from the weekend. Ryan Fox, a wonderful result swooping back in to with the BMW PGA Championship. Very impressive performance. Nick and Mark discuss the Wentworth course, how beautiful it is, but how it has had some challenges over the years with the redesigns. Nick was also impressed with Aaron Rai's performance, Mark has some concerns about his gear and his clothing - Nick agrees. Following Min Woo Lee giving Ryan Fox a huge hug after his win, Mark wants you to suggest some of the great hugs in golf history to compile a Top 5. Let us know on the socials or send a voicemail here. Another great result from the weekend was from Scott Hend on the Europeans Legends Tour, a great performance, and Mark recommends following Hendy on social media - very entertaining. Nick was impressed with the performance of PING player Sahith Theegala in the Napa Valley, both Nick and Mark loved the scenes when he won with his family present, wonderful footage and a victory a long time coming. Mark had a look at what was in Theegala's bag, one of the things that he loves to do - he calls himself a golf dork.Nick talks about the performance of the European players and has a theory on why they are stronger than the Americans leading into the Ryder Cup.After the turn, Mark has a crack at Nick over a disgraceful oversight. We love getting voicemails from you, keep them coming. Today we hear from Paul Higgins with a question about a recent Top 5; and Ry Coleman who asks the guys about left and right holes. Nick & Mark give some great advice.Plenty of feedback this week, starting with Mark copping a whack. And it's something that he's been picked up on previously. We may have an endemic issue with something he is doing. Keep the feedback, comments coming on socials, or send a voicemail anytime here.Nick gets Mark up to speed on some recent changes to the PGA Tour with the reintroduction of the PGA Tour Q-School presented by Korn Ferry. And then lots of results from around the world, with a focus on the Aussies and Kiwis.A fun Top 5 this week from Nick, who counts down his Top 5 'poor form' moments in golf history. If you have any to add let us know. And todays masterclass is from Mark and inspired by Scott Hend at the weekend on the DP World Tour, and is specifically for people who are slicers.Talk Birdie To Me, new episodes weekly wherever you get your podcasts. One of his masterpieces was a fiberglass camper/caravan. It had to meet a specific weight limit for his Toyota Rav 4. When he went touring, he put a green sticker on everything he used. When he got back, he would remove everything without a sticker. Yes, it helped with weight and fuel efficiency; however, it also removed clutter. Simple and effective. I apply his logic when I return from my summer break (Dec/Jan in Australia)Throughout the previous year, I have accumulated actions in my business. If I don't use them in January, I delete them. It simplifies my business and gives me space to add more during the year. Some examples I was writing a separate newsletter and Linkedin posts. This new partnership positions Virgin Media at the forefront of gaming in Ireland, working with Usain Bolt's WYLDE esports organisation, to grow Ireland's roster of world-class esports athletes. The popularity of esports is rapidly expanding, with 53% of Irish adults gaming regularly, and rising to 75% of adults aged 18 to 34 years, according to research commissioned by Virgin Media. The research goes on to show that strategy and sports titles are the most popular esports amongst Irish gamers with 22% watching live esports tournaments online. The Virgin Media announcement coincides with the opening by WYLDE of Ireland's first state-of-the-art esports Academy powered by Virgin Media in Cork. The Academy will host a wide range of national and international events in the coming months including FIFA training sessions and a Rainbow Six Siege Bootcamp. Based in Republic of Work in Cork, the new academy will support the on-going development in player performance and best practice coaching in Ireland. WYLDE players compete in some of the most popular esports titles in the world including Rainbow Six: Siege, Valorant, Rocket League and FIFA. The group is rapidly making its mark on both the domestic and international competitive stage. In 2021, WYLDE FIFA players reached the inaugural FAI eLeague of Ireland championship final, and WYLDE player Tyrone Ryan went on to represent Ireland at the FIFA eNations Series in 2021. On the international stage, the WYLDE Rainbow Six Siege team won the EU Gamers Without Borders Championship (June 2022) securing a $250,000 donation to UNICEF, and went on to the global semi-final of the $2 million Gamers 8 tournament, beating Team Liquid and former World Champions Space Station Gaming along the way. WYLDE continues to dominate international titles, with WYLDE's R6 Team winning the Ubisoft GSA Grand Final Trophy in Germany. Paul Higgins, Vice President of Commercial, Virgin Media welcomed the announcement saying: “We are thrilled to announce this new partnership with WYLDE, Ireland's leading esports organisation. Without superfast and reliable broadband, gamers cannot perform at their best. We know so many of our customers love gaming.Research carried out by Virgin Media shows the remarkable growth of gaming and esports in Ireland. “Our most recent research goes on to show just how prolific gaming is amongst the Irish public with a growing number of gamers looking to play online, highlighting the importance of a fast and reliable internet connection. “The WYLDE esports Academy powered by Virgin Media's superfast 1Gb speeds is the first of its kind in Ireland and is an exciting opportunity to help nurture and support gaming talent in Ireland.” The world's fastest man, and co-owner of WYLDE, Usain Bolt, said: “I am so excited to be part of the fastest growing sport in the world, esports, through WYLDE. The WYLDE x Virgin Media partnership is a great fit, as our players and gamers all over Ireland will benefit from superfast, reliable broadband, providing a competitive edge and supporting their development as players.” Speaking at the announcement, WYLDE CEO Steve Daly said: “To be world champions, our players need world class infrastructure in Ireland. With Virgin Media as our broadband partners, WYLDE players, casters, content creators, gamers and our supporters will have a real competitive edge. We are delighted to be working with Virgin Media to enable Ireland's gaming community and esports athletes to fulfil their potential.” To coincide with this major announcement, Virgin Media will also be launching a brand-new nationwide campaign, where two of Ireland's top FIFA champions will be showcased as elite athletes who, like other athletes, rely on their kit to perform at the highest level. Click here for the Utah Dept of Culture & Community Engagement shownotes for this episode.  Click here for more SYP episodes. The episode's focus is on Paul Higgins, a 20th century artist, Utah born and bred (middle class, Presbyterian, his father a mining attorney), who became "Pablo Esteban O'Higgins," a beloved Mexican muralist. His devotees thought of his work as expressing the "Soul of God," through his empathic capturing of everyday life.  At his death he was a recipient of a Mexico state funeral. Pablo was also an ardent Communist. The book, Susan Vogel's riddle-of-a-life story entitled Becoming Pablo O'Higgins: How An Anglo American Artist Became a Mexican Muralist (2010). Vogel is joined In this conversation by co-host Catherine Aviles and Fanny Guadalupe Blauer, Executive Director of Artes de Mexico en Utah.   The conversation begins with post-Mexican Revolution (1910-1920)“Muralism” (large-scale, socially conscious public art, expressing political and cultural identities) which remains today a worldwide art movement, inspired by murals of everyday people, laborers and heroes. The conversation then turns to Salt Lake City's many public murals and to one of the city's most vibrant cultural organizations, Artis de Mexico en Utah (est. 2011).O'Higgin's story includes his early work with Diego Rivera (1886-1957, who redefined Mexican culture after the Mexican Revolution), knowing Frida Kahlo (1907–1954, beloved Mexican artist and femanist), watching the intrigue of Leon Trotsky (1879-1940, Marxist theorist and politician, exiled and murdered in Mexico), mentoring Marion Greewood (1909-1970, American artist working in Mexco) and the artist's unrequited love for Tina Modotti (1896-1942, Italian photographer, model and revolutionary acitivist). The episode also tells of O'Higgins father, Edward Higgins (surnames spelled differently), who in an ironic twist, plays a part in Utah's execution of Joe HIl (1879-1915), possibly the world's most lionized labor union martyr and hero. Pablo's early art training was in SLC's East High School with James Harwood (1860-1940, who studied at l'Ecole de Beaux Arts) and LeConte Stewart (1891-1990, perhaps Utah's most beloved rural landscape painter). O'Higgins was influenced deeply by Stewart, and repelled by what Harwood represented--formal, académie inspired art. Aided by his devoted mother Alice McAfee Higgins, O'Higgins was invited to Mexico City where he begins to work alongside Diego Rivera.BIOS: Susan Vogel co-founded Artes de Mexico en Utah in 2011.  She is the author of the only English language biography of this Utah-born Mexican muralist. Susan's gateway to loving Mexican art and history was by way of Mexico's discotheques and marrying into a family from Guadalajara.  Fanny Guadalupe Blauer graduated from the Instituto Politecnico Nacional as a CPA, and holds a certification of an Anthropology from the Center for Research & Advanced Studies of Social Anthropology (CIESAS: Mexico City). Since 2019 Fanny has served as executive director for Artes de Mexico en Utah.  Catherine Aviles, co-producer of the podcast Speak Your Piece (2021-early 2022), has been an educator in Utah for 12 years. Cat has worked for the SLC Library, SLC School District, the Utah Dept. of Culture & Community Engagement and the Natural History Museum of Utah.  She is also the former director for Artes de Mexico en Utah.  Write us at – askahistorian@utah.gov

What You'll Learn From This Episode: Facing 'unpredictable referrals' The mistake of not having a system in place Three key things for predictable referrals Related Links and Resources: A lot of people ask "how can I get those predictable referrals?". You need to have 9 critical questions that you need to have in place. We have those questions and it will only take you 3 minutes and the best thing after that, based on your results, I will then have a call with you. It's not a sales call, it's a planning. If you go to www.paulhigginsmentoring.com/pulse Summary: Paul Higgins is passionate about helping business owners create a business asset that funds freedom in life. He feels blessed to have worked for Coca-Cola for 18 years, then launched his own business with a successful exit. In February of 2019, he received a life-changing kidney donation from his best friend. Given this second chance, he wants to make the most of it by helping others. He is a podcaster with 300+ episodes, a book author, and has mentored hundreds of business owners globally. Paul has 27 years of combined sales experience but people are truly impressed by his professionalism, honesty, integrity and pure tenacity to get clients' results. Paul loves to spend time with his family, friends and playing golf. Here are the highlights of this episode: Paul says that his ideal clients would be consultants and SAS resellers. He tries to solve problems that they face such as unpredictable referrals from their networks or partners. Of course, these folks feel the exhaustion of doing everything by themselves, and often they don't know what they don't know. Therefore, they are not spending quality time with their family after leaving their corporate job to run this business. They are not having the freedom that they really wanted. They often believe that one day, things will change, but it doesn't. Often they are hire a salesperson to come in. It doesn't work because there's no system to make it easy for the salesperson to do it. Recent poll of salesforce stated that 66% of sales is admin. If 66% of the stuff is removed from the salesperson, they can have a better return on the time invested in them. When you wonder how to get more predictable referrals, make these 3 key things: one is CONNECT- you got to be the face of the business. Second thing is CONVERT- once leads are coming in, there are a lot of ways to speed up the sales cycle. How do you amplify that? That's where you get strategic partners, that's the third one which is COLLABORATE. You can find out more of that from Paul's website. Paul's Valuable Free Action (VFA): Get yourself a virtual assistant. Get someone who can help you remove that 66%

In this episode, Paul shares how to build a business with a repeatable sales system so you can sell easily. He also talks about having a business that funds your lifestyle while allowing you to give to others. Check out these episode highlights: 01:13 - Paul's ideal client: “My ideal client is a service-based business owner, like you said, high six, early sevens, and a couple of particular ones that I normally work with outsourcing companies, consultants, and also with tech resellers.” 02:09 - The problem Paul helps solve: “he key thing is sales. So most of them have done exceptionally well to get to that high-six, seven figures, but it's predominantly relied upon them, sales, and they really haven't systemized it. So they leave the business. They can't get any more sales. They're also relying upon referrals, which has been great up to now but they're very lumpy..” 02:57 - The symptoms people experience before they realize they need Paul's expertise: “OMost of them have got an aspiration to sell their business. And as you know, it's very hard to sell your business if you don't have a repeatable sales system. So they hit the ceiling in their aspirations; they just can't get to their aspiration. The other is, they're working too many hours because they can't hand off sales. So they just continue to do that. And that has an impact upon their personal life. The other thing is that they often get burned by people that say they're going to fix it. They just get burned a lot of money on agencies who over-promise and under-deliver.” 04:12 - The common mistakes people make when they're trying to solve that best-kept secret problem: “There are normally two big ones, and one is that they go and just hire a salesperson often a person that's probably got more experience and is used to a business where a lot of it is systemized. They come in; they find out there's hardly any systems, the owners are too busy to give them that information; it just turns into not a great situation, and they leave. And the other one is when they say, 'Hey, why don't I just bring someone in?' This person sounds great. And they can just make commission-only sales for me. So there's no risk to me; they take all the risk. And I don't know how many times someone's tried that. I'm yet to find someone where that's really worked.” 06:17 -Paul's Valuable Free Action (VFA): The first one is, and it's a bit overused, but I think it's got relevance today, is a sales funnel. That's number one, two,
