So we were fudging a lot of it."— Corynne Corbett 00:05The Influence of Advertisers in Digital Publishing: "Today, I think the pressure editors not the pressure, but one of the concerns editors have is whether there are affiliate links. So even if there's a black brand with a power product they don't have an affiliate link that can be shared, you know, on in the article, the likelihood that they're gonna be covered is less."— Corynne Corbett 00:07Unique Value Proposition: "Don't do something just because someone else is doing it. "Well, we have work to do because, 1st of all, are the retailers doing it because they think the brands are ready? To to be on re retail sales. Do they know how long it's gonna take to get paid? What they have to do to get the what what kind of investment they have to make to get that order to the to the retailer.— Corynne Corbett 00:29Getting ready for Retail: "So when I say go to these conferences to learn, go to workshops, whatever it takes so that you know all of these components, then do that before you make a deal (with retail).— Corynne Corbett 00:31Building a Business: " You have to be committed to build and be committed to any pivots that come your way. And you have to be comfortable with failure because everything is not gonna be what you expect. Right? So it's a matter of you know, kind of getting some people to help to to fight this because the reason that failure is fun exists is because no one was giving us money."— Corynne Corbett 00:54

How would an authentically Catholic feminism both dialogue with and meaningfully differ from secular feminism? This is the focus of a new program from The Catholic Woman. The program is called  “Cultivating Catholic Feminism.” It  seeks to establish a framework for Catholic feminism through lesson and story and, from that framework, to engage with secular feminism on a range of important topics.   Today I welcome two guests to talk about this program's aims, approach, and timeliness. Corynne Staresinic is founder and executive director of The Catholic Woman, an online based nonprofit that is dedicated to sharing stories and wisdom from Catholic women to affirm the goodness, unrepeatability, and dignity of every woman for the redemption of humankind and the Church. Abigail Favale is Dean of Humanities at George Fox University, who wrote and presents the 21 video lessons included in “Cultivating Catholic Feminism.” She is the author of Into the Deep: An Unlikely Catholic Conversion, and of the forthcoming book The Genesis of Gender from Ignatius Press.

"I really wanted to create a space that would illustrate and show a diverse range of stories from Catholic women, that would really show the beauty and the diversity of the many different ways in which we as women live out the faith." Corynne Staresinic is a convert to the Catholic faith from a strong Evangelical background. In the past, Corynne disagreed with the ways women were treated by the Catholic Church. But through dating her now husband - who was a Catholic - and diving into her own research, she started to see the beauty and wisdom of Catholicism. Through her faith journey, she came to see the beauty of Catholic femininity and the diversity of ways women live out their  vocation, which led her to create The Catholic Woman. In this episode, Corynne and I talk about her journey of conversion to the Catholic Church, how The Catholic Woman came to be, and why it's so important to her to create a place for all women to belong. Here are the show notes for this week's episode.Learn more about The Catholic Woman by checking out their website, thecatholicwoman.co.  They're also on Instagram @thecatholicwoman and on Facebook @TheCatholicWoman.Co.If you want to hear more about A Place to Belong, take a listen to season two of The Daughters Project Podcast from the Daughters of St. Paul, who published the book! Welcome to the (In)Visible Women Podcast, where we put issues related to diversity, inclusion, and appearance in the spotlight and examine how they impact the lives of women of color. In this introductory segment, we introduce ourselves and talk about our personal connections to this topic. As women of color, we both have struggled with being invisible, particularly when it comes to beauty standards. We are judged by what we look like, whether consciously or unconsciously. The criteria are often everything that we are not. (In)Visible Women Podcast challenges us to acknowledge our visibility and lean into, name and welcome our visible differences. Our podcast acknowledges that while women of color are participants in every aspect of American culture, there is still the underlying message that our hair, our skin tone, our body shape, are not important enough to be affirmed in pop culture, at work, or in school. Our podcast is intended to provide a space for dialogue, support, and solutions. It is for you no matter what sector you work in, whether you are still in school or an entrepreneur, no matter what dimension of difference you bring to the world, or what your identity intersections are. We want to send a clear message out to everyone this work touches, which is simply you are ENOUGH. In this first episode of the (In)Visible Women Podcast, we invite a guest, Dr. Loretta L.C. Brady, Ph.D. is a Professor of Psychology at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH. She is the founder of BDS Insight and creator of Bad Ass & Bold. A Psychologist, Entrepreneur, Mom, Professor, constant striver. She joins us to discuss what it means to be authentic and resilient at work. We talk about authentic as the ability to show up as your full, intact self at work, and ask Dr. Brady to share how the authenticity dynamics may be different for people from different, ethnic, cultural or socioeconomic backgrounds who may communicate differently or use different languages for different situations. We highlight what it means to be visually authenticity, and the ways Millennial and Gen-Zers have been conduits for change in workplace practices, standards and policies related to women of color's beauty visibility. We discuss resilience in the context of women of color, and how weathering storms and absorbing the bumps of life foster a navigation system which can prove to be an effective workplace asset. Finally, we discuss the importance of being honest about what we're experiencing in the workplace, accessing sources of support, and ally-ship critical to navigating the turbulent political waters that can come up at the workplace. On Natural Velvet’s new album, “Mirror to Make You,” the band puts forth female fury. Today on the podcast, Natural Velvet bassist and vocalist Corynne Ostermann and guitarist Kim Te come in to talk about their aggressively feminine music. Corynne and Kim make up half of the alternative post-punk band, along with guitarist Spike Arreaga and drummer Greg Hatem. “Mirror to Make You,” the band’s third LP, came out earlier this month, following 2015’s “She is Me.” Corynne and Kim talked about those albums, their relationships to the cities they grew up near, how identity and aesthetics shape the band and their very different musical educations.

Ask the EFF: The Year in Digital Civil Liberties Kurt Opsahl General Counsel, Electronic Frontier Foundation Nate Cardozo EFF Staff Attorney Mark Jaycox EFF Legislative Analyst Corynne McSherry EFF Legal Director Nadia Kayyali EFF Activist Peter Eckersley EFF Technology Projects Director Get the latest information about how the law is racing to catch up with technological change from staffers at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the nation’s premiere digital civil liberties group fighting for freedom and privacy in the computer age. This session will include updates on current EFF issues such as surveillance online and fighting efforts to use intellectual property claims to shut down free speech and halt innovation, discussion of our technology project to protect privacy and speech online, updates on cases and legislation affecting security research, and much more. Half the session will be given over to question-and-answer, so it's your chance to ask EFF questions about the law and technology issues that are important to you. Kurt Opsahl is the Deputy Executive Director and General Counsel of the Electronic Frontier Foundation. In addition to representing clients on civil liberties, free speech and privacy law, Opsahl counsels on EFF projects and initiatives. Opsahl is the lead attorney on the Coders' Rights Project. Before joining EFF, Opsahl worked at Perkins Coie, where he represented technology clients with respect to intellectual property, privacy, defamation, and other online liability matters, including working on Kelly v. Arribasoft, MGM v. Grokster and CoStar v. LoopNet. For his work responding to government subpoenas, Opsahl is proud to have been called a "rabid dog" by the Department of Justice. Prior to Perkins, Opsahl was a research fellow to Professor Pamela Samuelson at the U.C. Berkeley School of Information Management & Systems. Opsahl received his law degree from Boalt Hall, and undergraduate degree from U.C. Santa Cruz. Opsahl co-authored "Electronic Media and Privacy Law Handbook." In 2007, Opsahl was named as one of the "Attorneys of the Year" by California Lawyer magazine for his work on the O'Grady v. Superior Court appeal. In 2014, Opsahl was elected to the USENIX Board of Directors. Nate Cardozo is a Staff Attorney on the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s digital civil liberties team. In addition to his focus on free speech and privacy litigation, Nate works on EFF's Who Has Your Back? report and Coders' Rights Project. Nate has projects involving cryptography and the law, automotive privacy, government transparency, hardware hacking rights, anonymous speech, electronic privacy law reform, Freedom of Information Act litigation, and resisting the expansion of the surveillance state. A 2009-2010 EFF Open Government Legal Fellow, Nate spent two years in private practice before returning to his senses and to EFF in 2012. Nate has a B.A. in Anthropology and Politics from U.C. Santa Cruz and a J.D. from U.C. Hastings where he has taught first-year legal writing and moot court. He brews his own beer, has been to India four times, and watches too much Bollywood. Mark Jaycox is a Legislative Analyst for EFF. His issues include user privacy, civil liberties, surveillance law, and "cybersecurity." When not reading legal or legislative documents, Mark can be found reading non-legal and legislative documents, exploring the Bay Area, and riding his bike. He was educated at Reed College, spent a year abroad at the University of Oxford (Wadham College), and concentrated in Political History. The intersection of his concentration with advancing technologies and the law was prevalent throughout his education, and Mark's excited to apply these passions to EFF. Previous to joining EFF, Mark was a Contributor to ArsTechnica, and a Legislative Research Assistant for LexisNexis. Peter Eckersley is Technology Projects Director for the Electronic Frontier Foundation. He leads a team of technologists who watch for technologies that, by accident or design, pose a risk to computer users' freedoms—and then look for ways to fix them. They write code to make the Internet more secure, more open, and safer against surveillance and censorship. They explain gadgets to lawyers and policymakers, and law and policy to gadgets. Peter's work at EFF has included privacy and security projects such as the Let's Encrypt CA, Panopticlick, HTTPS Everywhere, SSDI, and the SSL Observatory; helping to launch a movement for open wireless networks; fighting to keep modern computing platforms open; and running the first controlled tests to confirm that Comcast was using forged reset packets to interfere with P2P protocols. Peter holds a PhD in computer science and law from the University of Melbourne; his research focused on the practicality and desirability of using alternative compensation systems to legalize P2P file sharing and similar distribution tools while still paying authors and artists for their work. He is an affiliate of the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University. Nadia Kayyali is a member of EFF’s activism team. Nadia's work focuses on surveillance, national security policy, and the intersection of criminal justice, racial justice, and digital civil liberties issues. Nadia has been an activist since high school, when they participated in the World Trade Organization protests in Seattle. Nadia is one of the creators of the Canary Watch website, which tracks and classifies warrant canaries. Corynne McSherry is the Legal Director at EFF, specializing in intellectual property, open access, and free speech issues. Her favorite cases involve defending online fair use, political expression, and the public domain against the assault of copyright maximalists. As a litigator, she has represented Professor Lawrence Lessig, Public.Resource.Org, the Yes Men, and a dancing baby, among others, and one of her first cases at EFF was In re Sony BMG CD Technologies Litigation (aka the "rootkit" case). Her policy work includes leading EFF’s effort to fix copyright (including the successful effort to shut down the Stop Online Privacy Act, or SOPA), promote net neutrality, and promote best practices for online expression. In 2014, she testified before Congress about problems with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Corynne comments regularly on digital rights issues and has been quoted in a variety of outlets, including NPR, CBS News, Fox News, the New York Times, Billboard, the Wall Street Journal, and Rolling Stone. Prior to joining EFF, Corynne was a civil litigator at the law firm of Bingham McCutchen, LLP. Corynne has a B.A. from the University of California at Santa Cruz, a Ph.D from the University of California at San Diego, and a J.D. from Stanford Law School. While in law school, Corynne published Who Owns Academic Work?: Battling for Control of Intellectual Property (Harvard University Press, 2001). Twitter: @eff, @kurtopsahl
