Ben Bergeron gets vulnerable about his journey to becoming a better leader in this episode of “Run a Profitable Gym,” recorded live at the Two-Brain Summit in Chicago on June 9.Ben, a legendary coach and gym owner, discusses the three pillars of team health—culture, vision and accountability—and explains how they were lacking in his gym, CrossFit New England.Once Ben recognized the problems, he sat his team members down and made changes to reshape his business to give him what he was looking for: peace of mind.Ben says culture starts with the hiring process: Emphasize your values and let the candidates who don't share them weed themselves out.Next, build a shared vision with your leadership team by asking, “What are we trying to create?” Once culture and vision are dialed in, decisions become much easier. The final pillar is accountability: You must hold people to your standards of excellence.Ben shares detailed strategies and tactics for building each of these pillars in your gym. Does being a good coach make you a good gym owner? In today's episode of “Run a Profitable Gym,” host Mike Warkentin dives into this question with one of the top coaches in the world, Ben Bergeron. Ben has trained numerous CrossFit Games and Affiliate Cup champions, and he's also the founder of CrossFit New England and CompTrain, as well as the author of the book “Chasing Excellence.”According to Ben, it takes a lot more than just a passion for coaching if you want to run a successful gym in 2024. He dials in on a few essential business skills for gym owners: building and leading a team, understanding your financials, and being—or having—a high-level coach.Another key question Ben addresses: Will your gym be successful if you get an athlete to the CrossFit Games? To hear more from Ben and other incredible speakers such as Jason Khalipa and Brian “Tosh” Chontosh, get your tickets to the Two-Brain Summit, June 8 and 9 in Chicago, via the link below.LinksTwo-Brain SummitGym Owners UnitedBook a Call3:41 - What happened with Ben10:49 - What did Ben change?19:37 - Did things improve?29:26 - Advice for prospective gym owners35:44 - Competition success doesn't mean gym success

Today's episode comes from an Instagram post I saw maybe a month or so ago from Ben Bergeron. If you haven't heard of Ben Bergeron, he's the owner of CrossFit New England. He's trained a ton of great athletes, and his book Chasing Excellence is one of my favorites. What I love about him is the effort that he puts into the mental side of sports and life. So the post…here it is 10 Things that require zero talent from @benbergeron Being on time Work ethic Effort Body language Energy Attitude Passion Being coachable Doing extra Being prepared https://www.instagram.com/p/CdttKsXrEEf/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link I look at this list and think about how awesome my life and results could be if I committed to throwing myself into these things. Not relying on talent that I don't have but on work that I can do. It's so easy to make excuses, to think that someone is more talented or skilled, or was given more, or was just born with mad skills. But the truth is, if you focused on this list…these 10 things that require zero talent, your life would probably look much different. Effort matters. Work matters. Little things matter. "How you do anything is how you do everything." - Martha Beck Find the things that don't require talent…And get to freaking work! Enjoy! KP

Ben Bergeron is a former Ironman triathlete turned CrossFit Games competitor who now trains some of the fittest athletes in the world. Ben has coached his athletes to six world championships total, and is currently the coach to the reigning Fittest Man and Fittest Woman on Earth. One of the things about Ben that impresses me the most is his approach to mental toughness with his athletes. Ben understands that while the mindset of a champion is uncommonly rare, it doesn't have to be, and that every one of us is capable of unlocking it. He credits mental toughness as the secret to the success of his athletes, and it was fascinating to hear Ben's unique perspective on the principles that make up a winning mindset.   Ben has dedicated his life to helping others become the best version of themselves – a path that led him to expand from coaching to entrepreneurship. He founded CrossFit New England in 2007, where he coaches regular people on their quest to improve their fitness, health, and approach to life beyond the gym.  Ben has transformed the lives of tens of thousands of people through his coaching, and you'll notice very quickly in this episode that he brings an incredible level of passion to everything he does. Sean is a great person to talk to, and we really hope that you enjoy this episode. Look, we all know that Crossfit is no more dangerous or injury causing than any other sport, but sometimes we get hurt, maybe we aggravate old injuries, or, we get a new injury. When that happens, the first thing we do is… ask the CF Masters facebook group to diagnose it for us and then suggest treatment. Then we go to 321gomd.com to read an article about our injury written by a real doctor. Sean Rockett is the real doctor behind 321gomd.com He’s also an orthopedic surgeon. He’s been a crossfitter since before Ben Bergeron opened Crossfit New England, and Sean really, really cares about making people better. I’ve listened to several podcasts with Sean, and the one thing that I was always interested in is “why?” Why are you an orthopedic surgeon? Instead of being say an oncologist or a family medicine doc. How did you choose the path to orthopedics specifically? OK, I’ll be totally honest. One of the things that fascinates me more than anything about everyone is - why are you who you are? How did you get here and what choices did you make along the way? Thankfully, Sean shared his story with us and his desire to help people started at a young age. Thanks, in large part, to the influence of his parents who were both surgeons. Early on when we started Get Off Our Lawn, Angela wanted to get Sean as a guest. She made it happen, and you get the benefit. When it comes to interesting episodes this one absolutely takes the cake. The only problem, and this is probably due to my WiFi - we lost the recording of when Sean beat Ben Bergeron in a WOD. We could call up Sean and re-record that segment, but I think it would be much more interesting to send a camera out and record it live. Enjoy! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/cf-masters/message

What an absolutely incredible woman. Today, we sat down and talked with Beth Hart Gerry who was just an absolute pleasure to talk with. We hit on 3 main topics throughout this episode - her experiences with the Olympics, the CrossFit Games, and postpartum depression.Growing up in Grafton, Beth was the youngest of 5 sisters. She has a twin, Sabine, who is 2 minutes older than her (apparently significantly older enough to think that she could take care of Beth at a young age). We didn't get a chance to dive into this on the podcast but Beth and her 4 sisters were recently selected to be on Family Feud! Unfortunately, there was a last minute emergency with the game show host, so they won't be going on until hopefully next year.Beth ultimately went to the Olympics on the American Bob Sled team. She explains to us how she even got there. If you think about it, who's training for bob sled at a young age? That's right, no one! Her story of how she went from being 3rd in the state for shot put to being an All-American in the hammer throw at UConn to becoming an Olympian in Bob Sled is fascinating and a must-listen!Once Beth finished her Olympic career, she found CrossFit shortly after (which was quite taboo in her workplace at the time). She started off just working out to get fit again and then realized she was really good at it! One year, she came 2 spots shy of qualifying for the games as an individual! She would later go on to WIN the CrossFit Games on team CrossFit New England.Beth was also kind enough to open up to us about her experience with postpartum depression and the effects it took on her life and her body. We can't thank her enough for her transparency and honesty throughout this portion of the episode. She speaks with great passion and paints a vivid picture as to what she experienced. She offers some advice on how to gradually overcome it as well as all the trial and error she had to go through.Beth, we cannot begin to thank you enough for coming on!! You were so so so much fun to sit down and speak with (so fun that this is our longest episode to date and we could have easily kept talking for another hour!) You're an incredible woman, and we're so fortunate to have you as part of our community.

When I attended Ben Bergeron's Business of Excellence Seminar back in 2013, I was shocked to hear that his affiliate was bringing in over 7 figures in annual revenue in a small town in Massachusetts. At the time, we hadn't even celebrated our first anniversary at CrossFit Palm Beach, and barely surpassed $200,000 in revenue that first year. I felt like we were so far away from the success they were having at CrossFit New England, but it was extremely inspiring to me, and forced me to think differently about our business moving forward. What I didn't realize at the time, was the power of the compound effect. When we repeat positive actions day after day in our personal and professional life, it's almost impossible for us to fathom the level of success and fulfillment we can achieve over the course of 5 or 10 years. This episode covers how we have benefitted from the compound effect at CrossFit Palm Beach (including our annual revenue numbers from the last 6 years), and how I use the compound effect as a guiding principle with new ventures that I take on, like the Seven Figure Box podcast and the Rockstar Coaching Course. This is one of my favorite episodes to date and one that I hope you get a lot of value out of!
