The first several days of a diet seem to go so smoothly - you may even start to lose some weight! But for whatever reason, just a handful of weeks in, cravings start to pile up, and it becomes exponentially harder to "stay the course" with your diet. This leads many to abandon the diet altogether and, typically, rebound past their diet start weight. You may have lost 3 pounds on the diet, but you end up gaining 5 pounds back! The reason many people seem to experience this yo-yo effect within dieting is because of the fixation on over-constriction of the diet. Many diets leading to dramatic initial weight gain focus on all of the things you CAN'T eat in order to stay on the diet. But what if there were another way to lose fat that didn't require you to restrict your intake to the point of starvation? In fact, what if there was a way to lose fat by eating MORE than you already eat? Today, I'm joined by special guest EC Synkowski. Eventually, after doing her master of science degree in nutrition and functional medicine, Synkowski resigned from CrossFit to become an entrepreneur and nutrition coach, eventually starting her own company in 2018. EC is the developer of the 800-gram challenge, a nutrition protocol that focuses on consuming 800 grams of fruits and vegetables a day. She also spent several years working for CrossFit HQ, designing their nutrition course materials. The nutritional knowledge we discuss will be useful to any athlete on any diet. But still, each of us has to make our own trade-off decisions. Recovering faster and getting stronger is not all we want in life. Some of you may decide that you'd rather enjoy what you are currently eating and drinking instead of improving your athletic performance or even your longevity. So be it. At least you can make an informed decision. Nutritional topics impacting recovery Recovery from exercised induced damage: refueling, repairing damage, reducing chronic inflammation Keeping / building muscle mass: eating enough protein (leucine), hormone support, sarcopenia Nutrition has been described as a pseudoscience masquerading as a religion. So much new information and interpretations and conspiracy theories come out that people don't know what to do except stay out of it or choose sides. I've done it myself more than once. EC's perspective is refreshingly simple. She doesn't advocate for extremes or even for any particular diet. EC's advice is to keep it simple when it comes to choosing a formula for choosing what to eat and how much. Don't make a list of 1000 rules of things to avoid and do. “There's no diet plan, there's no 30 day challenge that's going to stick with you forever.  You, ultimately at some point, are in the driver's seat.” - EC Synkowski EC Synkowski is the founder of OptimizeMe Nutrition, a company dedicated to helping anyone improve their health and well being with simple, non-restrictive diet methods. EC started CrossFit in 2006 and over time her enthusiasm and hard work led to seminar staff and flowmaster positions for the Level 1 and CrossFit Weightlifting courses, a CF-L4 certification, and a career as a Program Manager with CrossFit, Inc.  In 2017, EC stepped down from her position at CrossFit to focus on finishing her second master's degree in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine. From there, she founded OptimizeMe Nutrition, where she focuses on helping individuals understand nutrition physiology and it's day-to-day application. She is the creator of the #800gChallenge, a straightforward eating plan that encourages participants to maximize their fruit and vegetable intake and encourages the consumption of whole, unprocessed foods, and it's slightly more advanced partner, Lazy Macros. I was excited to catch up with EC for her second appearance on the podcast.  We talked about the 10 Principles of Nutrition, the importance of making sustainable changes to our diet, and the nutrition takeaways she's gleaned from the COVID-19 pandemic.
