Knitting in Passing During Marta's visit, the kids turned the living room at my parents' into a craft room. Millie knit on the hat she's making for her dad. Riley worked on crochet hexagons for our matching blankets. Roc crocheted on a crab and eventually started a giraffe amigurumi and a baby hat. Riley taught Roc to make a crochet hexagon. Even Max & Garret got in on the action and did some drawing. One of the first afternoons, we were sitting at the bar at my parents' pool. Marta was sewing up a hole in Max's shirt, I was finishing some socks and Roc was crocheting his crab. Throughout the trip, Roc (age 12) was crocheting constantly- in the car, at the table, at the park, anytime he had a few free minutes. He was incredibly adept at chatting and keeping up with his pattern working in increases and decreases. We ended up going to 6 craft stores- Plymouth Harbor Knits, Michaels, Joann, The Craft Loft, Hobby Lobby, Gather Here. Roc also got a crochet kit at Dollar Tree (the same dinoaur my niece Aila bought earlier this summer). We had a campfire at my house one night. Roc, Millie and Hattie spent most of the night crafting in my studio. We visited my house after kayaking & ice cream one afternoon- Hattie also did a bit of knitting on my Musselburgh hat. I found a few dropped stitches the next time I picked it up but that's ok. Crafty Adventures Marta, Roc and I did some resin projects while they were visiting. Roc put resin in the bottom of a small wooden crate and then we worked together on a pumpkin lazy susan. Update on Mom: Mom had a couple good days while Marta was visiting. Grateful we were able to spend time together even when she couldn't leave the house. The sound of the boys laughing brought her joy. She had the catheter removed from her lung. Began having throat issues that worsened day after day. On Thursday 9/12 came for scans and chemo, but only had scans and then was admitted. She's had a whole slew of tests and so far they haven't found anything wrong which is good news, but we still need to get to the bottom of things. One bit of good news, she should be having an injection of filler into her paralyzed right vocal cord that will allow her voice to come back. Ask Me Anything Herdofhills asked about: fall project plans, books, favorite fall recipes I am looking forward to: apple picking, apple sauce, wood chopping weekend, oven baked oatmeal (here's a recipe I like to use), a Better Off Dead movie party, I've already enjoyed watching Hocus Pocus (1 & 2), pulling out the wool socks and wearing those at night, decorating, overnight oats for breakfast which I tend to eat more in fall/winter. Even better for fall is warm. Deborahjay- Love is blind UK I was watching but got sidetracked with Marta's visit. For the first time, I found myself fast forwarding through the pre-wedding stuff to hear yes/no. Liked that it seemed like folks were actually there for love and that the cast was far less dramatic than the US participants. kjkcrochet- I'd love to know a little bit more about your job I'm a Project Manager in the Nursing Dept of a big boston hospital, supporting a communication system and other projects thank involve communication, responsiveness (to patients) and technology). Tune in to hear more. On a Happy Note Max's reaction to Plymouth Rock! Teaching Roc some new crochet stitches and seeing his enthusiasm. He's definitely my new buddy. My heart almost burst when he sent me a screenshot of his Home Screen- photo of us outside the Craft Loft in Cambridge. Handpicked sunflowers from my friend Eileen's garden. Laser tag Going on a Duck Tour 2 whole weeks with Marta. We haven't been together that long since 1998! And all of the funny moments and inside jokes that come from it. Connections at work making tough days a little easier. With it being Olympics season, what better time than talk with Chef/Owner Richard Cusack at 30:35 of show to chat about June BYOB in Collingswood, NJ an upscale French restaurant owned and operated by husband and wife, Richard and Christina Cusack, a certified sommelier. It features traditional French cuisine with some modern influences, and includes tableside presentations. The Cusack's are also Chef/Owners of Café le Jardin in Audubon, NJ. This restaurant is known for its charming and inviting atmosphere along with delicious food here as well. This café offers a blend of traditional and contemporary elements, creating a cozy space for patrons to relax and enjoy a variety of food and beverages. With a warm, welcoming vibe with a touch of elegance. It's designed to be a comfortable spot for both casual hangouts and more intimate gatherings that are family and budget friendly. Staying French themed, we chatted with Isabelle Noblanc at 01:09:15 of the show. Isabelle is Co-Owner of Mamie Colette in Newtown, PA an artisan bakery specializing in French viennoiserie. They prioritize quality and health. Their products are made from scratch, fresh every day and do not contain added preservatives. Their flour is non-GMO, never bleached and never bromated. Their mission is to bring happiness to our customers and team members, and serve the community, while offering a superior experience with quality products, and choice. Artisan viennoiserie bakers place a strong emphasis on using high-quality ingredients, such as butter, flour, and yeast, and on following traditional techniques for laminating the dough, shaping the croissants, and baking them to perfection. The goal is to produce croissants that are flaky, buttery, and full of flavor, with a crispy exterior and a soft, tender interior. She is also Co-Owner of their sister bakery, L'Annexe de Mamie Colette in Titusville, NJ that has bread, French pastries (except for croissants) and Breton crepes. Last, but certainly not least at 01:48:02 in the episode, we had a little French - New Orleans - Vietnamese fusion twist talking to Nini Nguyen about the soon to be released cookbook ‘Dac Biet: An Extra-Special Vietnamese Cookbook' available to order pre-sale now and on store shelves August 27th from Knopf Publishing. Nini is a New Orleans–based chef and cooking instructor. After starting her career in some of the country's most innovative kitchens, such as Coquette in New Orleans and Eleven Madison Park in New York, she competed in season 16 of Top Chef, as well as Top Chef: All-Stars, becoming a fan favorite. At the beginning of the pandemic, she leaned into her passion for teaching, originally honed at Cook Space in Brooklyn, New York, and built her Cooking with Nini virtual classes into a robust business. The classes, which she teaches several times per week, are wildly popular. The cookbook that will soon be available is a collection of contemporary, extra-special Vietnamese recipes, from beloved classics like Hanoi-Style Vermicelli with Grilled Pork and three variations of phở, to dishes with a New Orleans twist, like Southeast Asian Jambalaya and Sticky Fried Shrimp Bánh Mì. It includes one hundred delicious and vibrant recipes that celebrate the essential flavors of Vietnam—salty, sour, bitter, spicy, and sweet—and the bright and perfectly balanced dishes they create. Are you a caregiver for someone? Do you ever get overwhelmed? You will want to listen to this week's podcast. My friend Suzette Katopodes was our special guest this week. Suzette is a wife of 34 yrs., mom of four, sister, Grandma Suzie to six, and family caregiver. Looking back on her life, you might even say she is a serial caregiver, as she has cared for multiple family members over the years. She believes her purpose is to encourage and inform other family caregivers–past, present, and future. The truth is, if you haven't been a caregiver yet, you will likely be one or need one someday. And she wants to make the caregiving life just a little bit easier for others. Her caregiving history ● Dad: She helped care for her dad through a series of illnesses–heart disease, cancer, and COPD. ● Mom: Mom, who is aging gracefully and with dignity, is 93. She suffered from a heart attack, bouts of congestive heart failure, and edema. All while caring for her sister, Michelle, who had down syndrome. (She is an inspiring example.) ● Michelle: While mom had a months-long stint of illness and repeat stays in rehab, her sister came to live with her and her husband. They had one son left at home, and they were both working full-time. When mom's rehab was complete, they suggested Michelle stay with them. It wasn't long after that they started noticing changes in Michelle, and after a bit of research, they learned that people with Down Syndrome would get Alzheimer's Disease up to 50% more than people without Downs. Over the next few months, their suspicions were confirmed, her sister, sweet Michelle had Alzheimer's Disease, which slowly took over her brain and their lives. They cared for Michelle for five years until God called her home in January 2023. Welcome! and Thank you for listening.  I am very lucky that the various hats I wear seem to connect easily with my nutritional choices.   I was a daughter, doctor, wife and mother in that order, before  I became plant based nutritionally.  I became Mom Mom recently, and it is my favorite of all.  My roles are all very important to me, and it would be quite hard to do them independently as some people do.  Perhaps I can help you do some of your roles in harmony.  This weekend, I got to be mom mom.  To Caleb, I am mom mom not doctor or plant based.  But because I am plant based, I can participate in activities with him such as tackle football, and trucks on the ground.  I get to participate in the joy of watching him grow and develop.  We got to cook together, eat together and play together.   I wan to help you be an active parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle and enjoy the beauty and wonder of watching someone grow.  Join me for a few tips and stories.  Thanks for listening.  Email me at jami@doctordulaney.com  doctordulaney.com is our website to join us in challenges and membership https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamacardiology/fullarticle/2799707

On this week's episode of The Momlife Mindset podcast, I share my open heart as a Mom of 4, special needs mom, some of my biggest fears and the things we're working to focus on at our house as we kick off a new school year. My oldest kiddos are headed into 3rd and 5th grade. I can't pinpoint what it is - but somehow, there are lots of things that feel more "out of my control" and it's making me feel extra anxious and overwhelmed. As I continue to take things one day at a time and truly unpack where my unrest is coming from, I want to encourage you to know that the reality of up and down emotion is REAL when we get back into the swing of things with school, schedules, routines and more. We have a lot of needs in our house. Neurodiversity included. While using the term "special needs" feels like one of the fastest and easiest ways to directly connect to other families - I am determined to be a change agent around changing the narrative. In my heart of hearts and the way I see the world - we all have needs. They're all different. They're all unique. They all vary based on who we are and how we were uniquely made. I have SO much more work to do. For myself. For my family. For my son. For my community. And as I continue to get educated and find ways to be a voice and make an impact, I will keep sharing. Because I have faith that our family's story will resonate somewhere with someone. And I know God laid this message and this mission on my heart for a reason. The mission of overall health and wellness - from the inside out - for all. I would be honored if you shared this episode with others in your network. I'd also love to hear from you too and connect further on our stories.
