Take some time this week to remember your original happy hour: Saturday mornings as a kid, waking up at dawn, jumping on the couch with a bowl of chocolate cereal, turning on the ‘toons, tuning out the outside world and working your way into a sugar hangover before noon. We had a great conversation with actress Daphne Maxwell Reid from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. We talked about so many things from fame, acting, sacrifices, she told some great stories to a whole lot more Yes we also talked about The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air too!Daphne Maxwell Reid is an American actress, comedian, designer and former model. She is best known for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1993–1996) in her role as the second Vivian Banks on the NBC sitcom.Breaking new barriers is nothing new to Reid, who decades ago became the first African-American homecoming queen at Northwestern University and shortly thereafter one of the first African-American women to appear on the cover of Glamour magazine. But many fans of her modeling and acting career probably don't know that Reid is a lifelong shutterbug, a hobby passed down by her father that has now become a focal point of her career. With five books and 5 annual calendars already published, Reid specializes in fine art photography that features doors and doorways from around the world, including Cuba, Venice, France, China, Germany, and Belgium. Now she's added to her publishing resume with her first cookbook, “Grace + Soul & Motherwit,” which offers her favorite recipes spiced with personal memories and reflections from her life and travels.Reid has also been a seamstress for much of her life, creating many of her own outfits and costumes as a young actress and model, and has now developed those skills into an exclusive, custom clothing line called Daphne Style, making Chinese silk brocade jackets that are wearable works of art. She also keeps busy as a spokesperson for Virginia State University, a historically black college/university (HBCU), doing outreach, public relations, and speaking engagements that allow her to preach the importance of education and career prep for students of color.
In this episode of the podcast Joe talks to the absolutely fabulous Daphne Maxwell Reid! Ms. Reid comes on the show to discuss her fashion line, her photography books, and of course her storied acting career. It's a fantastic conversation I know you're going to enjoy! About Daphne Maxwell Reid Everyone remembers Daphne Maxwell Reid as an iconic TV mom of the 1990s, from her three seasons as Aunt Vivian on “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” And Daphne couldn't be more excited when the cast of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” reunited 30 years later for an unscripted reunion special that aired on HBO Max last November. These days Reid is a Renaissance woman, respected artist and designer, and education activist. Working from her home in Virginia, and still happily married to pioneering television actor/producer/writer/director Tim Reid (“WKRP in Cincinnati,” “Frank's Place,” “Sister, Sister”), Daphne Maxwell Reid is living proof that a passion for creativity and a dedication to hard work can ensure a lifetime's worth of success. Breaking new barriers is nothing new to Reid, who decades ago became the first African-American homecoming queen at Northwestern University and shortly thereafter one of the first African-American women to appear on the cover of Glamour magazine. Episode 296."The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"Actor: Daphne Maxwell Reid. You wouldn't blame someone with a lifetime of success as a performer to take it easy in their later years, restricting their efforts to the occasional fun gig or reunion appearance. But that's not Daphne Maxwell Reid, who continues to thrive as a creative entrepreneur and artist, continuing to dazzle anyone who knows her with her bold spirit, grace, and work ethic. One of the first African-American women to make the cover of Glamour magazine and one of television history's most beloved sitcom moms, Reid now balances her acting gigs with her work as a photographic artist, clothing designer, and education activist, demonstrating that it's never too late to pursue new passions and find new opportunities. When she attended Northwestern University a half-century ago, Daphne Maxwell became the prestigious school's first African-American homecoming queen; but that was just the first of many barriers that Maxwell broke in her career, arriving into the industry at just the right moment as a new perspective on race was emerging in the wake of thecivil rights movement. “Being among the first of a few black women to work in popular television reminds me that one doesn't choose to be a pioneer,” she says today. “One does what comes next in their journey, and sometimes you happen to be the first to do it. I just happened to land in that slot of being first for some things – but being the firstdoesn't mean anything if it doesn't seed the growth of a lot more. I'm pleased that my seed bore fruit, and now there are so many more black homecoming queens and cover models and actresses in popular entertainment.”Best known as being "Aunt Viv" from The Fresh Prince of Bell-Air from Seasons 3-6, You will come to see she is so much more than that.Welcome, Daphne Maxwell Reid.Instagram: Monday Morning Critic Podcast.Facebook: Monday Morning Critic Podcast.Twitter:@mdmcriticwww.mmcpodcast.comEmail: Mondaymorningcritic@gmail.comYouTube: Monday Morning Critic Podcast
The guys discuss S3E3, “That's No Lady, That's My Cousin”. Mike complains about delivery prices and Levi reveals his chocolate milk phase in college. They also reminisce on Polaroid pictures.
The guys discuss S3E24, “Six Degrees of Graduation”. Levi tells a story about his dentist and Mike rambles about what to expect after graduation. Each guy gives their thoughts on what it was like to graduate.
In part 2 of 2, Mike and Levi discuss some of their favorite Carlton moments and lines throughout the series.
Fresh out of NYU's Tisch Graduate Acting Program, she fulfilled her dream of working with both Denzel Washington, as his wife, and Spike Lee, in the hit film, "Inside Man". How? You may wonder. By being herself. And she's been on the inside of culture with successful shows as Luke Cage, Atlanta, and The Last O.G., and in films as Chris Rock's "I Think I Love My Wife" and more recently playing Mama Durant (Kevin Durant's mother) in "The Real MVP: The Wanda Durant Story". But she's best known for her current role on the hit show and remake, BEL-AIR as Vivian Banks aka "Aunt Viv" on Peacock. She's a lifelong dreamer and more importantly a manifestor, whose self-proclaimed purpose in life is to help people find their joy. And she's doing just that as she's fiercely reinventing the role of matriarch, a la Clair Huxtable or Aunt Viv 3.0, renewed for the 21st century... coloring her with some extra spice and that West Philly attitude in her own special way. It is fitting exactly a year after Tori interviewed her own stepmother - Daphne Maxwell Reid (Aunt Viv 2.0) - that she connected her with Aunt Viv 3.0 for a fresh take on the re-imagination of Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Just who is the woman behind our latest "Aunt Viv?" Let's get the Inside track, and we use that word "inside" knowingly, on this powerful, every woman. Get ready for joy. "Here's to Life" welcomes the vivacious, refreshing, and joy-filled talent, who some call "Aunt Viv"... the beautiful Cassandra Freeman.“Who do you want to be? ... But is this who you actually are? If so, fine. But if not, choose differently. You have time.” - Cassandra Freeman as Aunt Viv (to Hilary)This episode on "Here's To Life":• How she's made the role "Aunt Viv" her own and reinventing the matriarch• What the show BEL-AIR means to her and their power of storytelling• How African American Art came to play such a centric role in BEL AIR • The mother and daughter dynamic in this new age• Her respect and admiration for the original “Aunt Vivs” Daphne Maxwell Reid and Janet Hubert• The serendipitous story of how she landed her first film role working with Denzel Washington and Spike Lee • What her 3 year old is teaching her and how her unique parenting style informs her day-to-day life in the possibilities, potential and probabilities present in all of our lives• What makes her feel the most alive • Tori highlights Cassandra's powers and Cassandra returns with a clairvoyant revelation about Tori, and how each one of us has a blessed giftCREDITS:Guest: Cassandra FreemanHost and Producer: Tori ReidExecutive Producer: Patrick A.
