From leading the way in Asian-American romcoms to the brilliant 26.2 TO LIFE, I talk with filmmaker Christine Yoo about her career, how to depict marathons and prisons on film, the state of rom-coms and Asian-American filmmaking, and more. Just by those categories alone you should know you are hearing from a wildly original filmmaker. And that's before the CIA gets namedropped. In this episode, we discuss:prison films and film festivals;how she got started as a filmmaker, starting in Iowa as a Korean-American, and while she was expected to be a "doctor, a lawyer, or an engineer", she ended up being interviewed by the CIA (!) and fell into film as a "complete fluke and accident";her decision to attend film school;her decision to do both narrative and docs was influenced by the advent of digital filmmaking and how 26.2 TO LIFE was originally conceived as a narrative;why she made WEDDING PALACE (2013), the first Asian-American rom-com;how she feels about some of the seemingly personal reviews of what I thought was a fun, highly enjoyable film;how a filmmaker should think about reviews of their work within the larger construct of the review process and if reviewers feel more comfortable attacking a first-time director;what kind of advice she'd give a new filmmaker facing a similar situation;how she led the way in making Asian-American romcoms;the story behind 26.2 TO LIFE and why she depicted the characters in a more truthful way than you would expect;her decision regarding the innovative formatting of the film;how the unique environment of filming a documentary in prison presented opportunities and challenges;the challenges of independent film and how she felt so strongly about the story of 26.2 TO LIFE;what her success says about the ability for Asian-American filmmakers to tell their stories now;what's next for her -- "sports provides such a great narrative structure."Christine's Indie Filmmaker Highlight: Jennifer M. As Marlene reached out for the gifts, the clown shot her in the face, leaving Marlene gasping for air on the floor as the clown calmly walked back to a white Chrysler LeBaron and drove away. While Marlene was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, a massive manhunt for the clown began. And as the investigation unfolded, it was revealed that Marlene had expressed fears that her husband, Michael Warren, was going to kill her. However, the police would soon find out Michael couldn't be the killer—he'd been with a friend when Marlene was shot. The San Quentin Prison Marathon has an unconventional route: 105 dizzying laps around a crowded prison yard. Director Christine Yoo deeply empathetic documentary, 26.2 TO LIFE, tells the story of incarcerated men who are members of the 1000 Mile Club, the prison's long distance running club. They train all year for 26.2 mile long marathon race, all of which takes place inside the walls of the infamous San Quentin Men's Prison mile race. For the men who take their places at the starting line on a cool, sunny November morning, completing the marathon means more than entrée into an elite group of athletes. It's a chance to be defined by more than their crimes. Cheering them on are a small staff of volunteer coaches, veteran marathoners who train with the runners throughout the year. The bonds they forge on the track create a community that transcends prison politics and extends beyond the prison walls as members are released. 26.2 TO LIFE is a story of transformation and second chances. The film offers a rare glimpse into a world out of bounds, as the men navigating life sentences seek redemption and freedom… or something like it. Director Christine Yoo takes us inside the walls, physical and psychological of the men, who readily acknowledge the mistakes and crimes they have committed, work to define the remainder of their lives as positive and worthwhile. An exciting episode of BEHIND THE LENS thanks to documentary director/producer CHRISTINE YOO and director NICOLAS HARVARD. First up, take a listen to my exclusive interview with director NICOLAS HARVARD talking about his feature directorial debut – THE LOCKSMITH. Now, Nicolas is no stranger to film and television having long worked as a 1st Assistant Director and 2nd Unit Director on shows like "Yellowstone" and films like "Wind River", "Chappaquiddick", "The Spectacular Now", and "Rudderless". (Let's face it. You can't do much better today then work and learn from Taylor Sheridan.) But now he steps into the saddle as director and tackles elements of filmmaking he hasn't had to concern himself with before, such as casting, editing and music. It's a terrific conversation as Nicolas gets candid about this experience. And then, director/producer CHRISTINE YOO is live talking about her documentary 26.2 TO LIFE which screened at Santa Barbara International Film Festival, among others. Talk about a powerful, inspiring, and uplifting film! Christine goes behind the walls and barbed wire of San Quentin to show us one of the incredible rehabilitative programs offered to prisoners – The 1000 Mile Club. Honing in on three main inmates with 50+year sentences (although we hear from many more), we learn about the program from Coach Franklin Ruona and then follow Rahsaan Thomas, Tommy Lee Wickerd, and Markelle "The Gazelle" Taylor on their journey to complete a 26.2 mile marathon within the prison while having their eyes on the prize of possible parole and life outside. We get to know these men and you will care about them by film's end. Metaphoric when viewing training for a marathon as compared to their individual journeys at rehab, self-improvement, and redemption, Christine has done an amazing job. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

WOMEN SIPPING ON LIFE (with doctor shannon) | Stop Drowning | Start Sipping | Daily Inspiration | Hope | Certainty | Abundanc

Today we're circling back to complete the circle and to totally PUT A RING ON IT. Or perhaps 4 RINGS, and this is why… Oh my goodness, now everyone seems to be talking about this! Yep, thank God. However… Marrying your life is no joke. Seriously, it's not for the weak at heart. It's for the warriors, the women (and men) who fiercely love and live, because it's going to cost YOU your life. Here are the significant distinctions of what it truly means to MARRY YOUR LIFE… Did you know that you have a double life? Yep, an INSIDE, OUT one. BUT… You have not only a double life, you have a double double life. I call it the 4-D Life. (The 4-Dimensional Life.) 1. The life inside you. It keeps you alive. 2. The life that is you. It's you being alive. 3. The life you're living. It's you fully living your life + life's work. 4. The life you're in. It's life here on earth and the significant contribution you make to it. You can think of it as the life you were born into, and how you impact it. The 4-Dimensions include your health/body, your self, your life + life's work, AND YOUR life(TIME.) The time you're here on planet earth and beyond. Yes, this time in history / (her)story…and the life that'll continue long after you physically leave this life. Please grab your SACRED S.O.L. Today we talk with Marcia Moran, a stroke survivor who fought to live a productive life post stroke.  Hearing Marcia's long battle to recovery is a true inspiration!  She shares with us how she continued to fight for her ability to walk and talk again even after the insurance companies had discontinued her coverage.Marcia walks us through her entire experience and the thoughts and mindset she adapted to persevere through until she was fully recovered and able to live the life she wanted.  We discuss the numerous treatments she sought out and paid for herself to help her speak and walk again.A year after the stroke Marcia began writing about her experience, and then decided she was going to use those experiences to help other stroke survivors in her situation by writing a book called Stroke Forward: How To Become Your Own Healthcare Advocate...One Step At A Time.  We learned that Marcia not only had to learn how to walk and talk again, but she also had to learn how to read and spell again while she was in the process of writing her book.  Moran not only became a successful author, but has become a life and health coach for other stroke and brain injury survivors.  As well as a podcaster, and was featured in another book called Just Say "Yes" To Life!: Stories Of Thriving After Stroke  written by Stroke Awareness Oregon.Marcia Moran's Book Stroke Forward: How To Become Your Own Healthcare Advocate...One Step At A Time can be found on Amazonor by visiting her website www.strokeforward.comMarcia Moran can be found on LinkedIn----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We continue to try our best to bring you all worthy content to help you put your life first.  If you like the content we are creating and are interested in helping to support the show, please consider visiting our Buy Me A Coffee page www.buymeacoffee.com/lifeworkbalance   And thank you for you loyalty, we appreciate you all! Connor has spent a lot of episodes talking about the past, today he is talking about the future. Tyler Doyle is a celebrity in the metaverse. He is the most prominent influencer in the game Upland. In fact, he just returned from a conference in Las Vegas where he was named "Broadcaster of the Year." He has made a career out of investing in the metaverse and teaching others on how to make REAL money in the VIRTUAL world. If you aren't convinced that evolution is happening and coming at us faster than ever, you need to listen to this episode. Follow @Loyldoyl on social media, particularly his youtube channel if you are interested in learning more. A brief description of Upland... Built at the intersection of the real and virtual world, Upland gives you the power to buy, sell and trade properties based on real-world addresses, just like the one you live at today… but in the virtual world. The digital properties you collect in Upland don't have any association or rights to the correlating properties in the real world, however, the addresses do mirror real-life locations. Upland's economy is powered by an in-game currency called UPX (pronounced “UP-EX”). Once you own a property in Upland, you can start to collect UPX earnings on it every 3 hours. Pretty nifty, right? Complete property collections in order to boost your UPX earnings and win a one-time UPX award. Trade your properties with other Uplanders in the marketplace - for UPX or other properties in order to grow your property portfolio and UPX earnings! Have you spotted a property that you want which is already owned by someone else? No problem! you can always make an offer for the property - even if it's not actively up for sale on the marketplace! To Life, Liberty and Property!

On this week's edition of “To Life,” we hear from David Rubin. David is the former mayor of Shiloh, Israel. Shiloh is in the heartland of the nation, erroneously called the “West Bank” on the world stage. He recounts the terrifying time when he and his 3 year-old son were shot by Islamic terrorists on the road from Jerusalem. David, a religiously  observant Jewish man [not a Messianic believer in Yeshua] eloquently explains how the events of that day changed him. He went from being a believer in the miracle God of the ancient Hebrew scriptures to a modern man who experienced the personal miracle power of his God. David discusses the Uvalde Texas massacre, how to protect our children,  and how to find the Hope Behind the Headlines. You can get David Rubin's many books by following this link:https://www.amazon.com/David-Rubin/e/B001JOG6CC/ref=dp_byline_cont_pop_book_1Visit David's website to keep up on all he is doing:https://www.davidrubinisrael.com/Here is the link to David's work with Shiloh Israel Children' Fund:https://www.shilohisraelchildren.org/Support the show

Fresh out of NYU's Tisch Graduate Acting Program, she fulfilled her dream of working with both Denzel Washington, as his wife, and Spike Lee, in the hit film, "Inside Man". How?  You may wonder. By being herself.  And she's been on the inside of culture with successful shows as Luke Cage, Atlanta, and The Last O.G., and in films as Chris Rock's "I Think I Love My Wife" and more recently playing Mama Durant (Kevin Durant's mother) in "The Real MVP: The Wanda Durant Story". But she's best known for her current role on the hit show and remake, BEL-AIR as Vivian Banks aka "Aunt Viv" on Peacock. She's a lifelong dreamer and more importantly a manifestor, whose self-proclaimed purpose in life is to help people find their joy. And she's doing just that as she's fiercely reinventing the role of matriarch, a la Clair Huxtable or Aunt Viv 3.0, renewed for the 21st century... coloring her with some extra spice and that West Philly attitude in her own special way.  It is fitting exactly a year after Tori interviewed her own stepmother - Daphne Maxwell Reid (Aunt Viv 2.0) - that she connected her with Aunt Viv 3.0 for a fresh take on the re-imagination of Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Just who is the woman behind our latest "Aunt Viv?" Let's get the Inside track, and we use that word "inside" knowingly, on this powerful, every woman. Get ready for joy. "Here's to Life" welcomes the vivacious, refreshing, and joy-filled talent, who some call "Aunt Viv"... the beautiful Cassandra Freeman.“Who do you want to be? ... But is this who you actually are? If so, fine. But if not, choose differently. You have time.” - Cassandra Freeman as Aunt Viv (to Hilary)This episode on "Here's To Life":•  How she's made the role "Aunt Viv" her own and reinventing the matriarch•  What the show BEL-AIR means to her and their power of storytelling•  How African American Art came to play such a centric role in BEL AIR •  The mother and daughter dynamic in this new age•  Her respect and admiration for the original “Aunt Vivs” Daphne Maxwell Reid and Janet Hubert•  The serendipitous story of how she landed her first film role working with Denzel Washington and Spike Lee •  What her 3 year old is teaching her and how her unique parenting style informs her day-to-day life in the possibilities, potential and probabilities present in all of our lives•  What makes her feel the most alive •  Tori highlights Cassandra's powers and Cassandra returns with a clairvoyant revelation about Tori, and how each one of us has a blessed giftCREDITS:Guest:  Cassandra FreemanHost and Producer:  Tori ReidExecutive Producer:  Patrick A. It was a pleasure to speak with the two complementing spirits behind Victory & Noble, a storytelling company. In this 2-part conversation for our Deconstructing Dominant Cultures Series, Tori Reid and Patrick A. Howell — children of cultural and intellectual icons — reveal their own legacy project, and their energy and determination are sure to inspire, educate, and transform. Both Tori and Patrick — with Victory & Noble, with their podcast and books, and all of their projects under development — move us forward with a critical optimism rooted in both the real struggles of our past and our present, but also a futurism grounded in the belief that we have the power to not only imagine but also harvest a tomorrow that is brighter than today. "Here's To Life with Tori Reid" podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play, and Stitcher. Dispatches from the Vanguard: The Global International African Arts Movement Versus Donald J. Trump, by Patrick A. Howell. In the second episode of our 2-part conversation, Tori Reid and Patrick A. Howell of storytelling company Victory & Noble continue to unpack what it means to be a prophet in the Global International African Arts Movement, as well as what it means to be an evangelist, a seer, and a manifestor; they open up about their most memorable conversations with cultural icons and how these conversations transformed them; Tori and Patrick reveal their humanity and tells us how they became who they became; they explore how as creatives we are always best when we have the courage to be comfortable with discomfort; they challenge the Hollywood industrial complex and are pushing forward to reclaim our voices and tell our own stories; and they answer the question “How early should we be discussing race and racism with our children, regardless of our backgrounds, race, and ethnicity?” "Here's To Life with Tori Reid" podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play, and Stitcher. Jimmy Borges, Hawaii's gentleman of jazz, died Monday at age 80, having faced his recurring cancer with the same gutsy attitude that propelled him from hardscrabble Kalihi to the glittering stages of Las Vegas. His velvety voice and charisma sustained Borges through 60 years on stage, but what struck listeners most is how the jazz and pops singer spoke to them through song. Over the last two years I had the chance to speak with Jimmy Borges and I am so glad that I have been able to record these chats. Certainly make sure you pick up a copy of this album, it truly is great and is a real keepsake and a constant memory of this great man who's voice will continue forever. http://www.mountainapplecompany.com/blog/album/pre-order-jimmy-borges/ Luck Be A Lady The most Beautiful Girl In The World When I Fall In Love Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight Here's To Life
