It's New Orleans: Out to Lunch

What is fear? Fear is a natural response to a perception of danger. All creatures on earth have it. We use fear to spur us into action - to run or take other steps to save our lives. There are many studies listing specific fears of different societies. Believe it or not, here in the United Sates, one of our greatest fears is public speaking. In numerous studies, the fear of public speaking ranks number one – higher even than the fear of death. I'm not a psychologist, sociologist or neuroscientist so I'm not about to embark on an exploration of why that is, but I do know there are ways to conquer this fear. And it is worth conquering. The inability to express yourself when you have something to say can severely impact your career. In New Orleans, Chris Trew is an improv comedian who, alongside his comedy career, has turned his talents toward teaching communication skills. Chris conducts workshops for people in business. His goal is to help a business person become a better communicator, a better leader in their field, and to learn to embrace and enjoy attention rather than fear it. In the world of New Orleans comedy, comedian Nicolo Giardina is known as “Pickle.” The name was inspired by a rap song and cemented by fellow inmates when Pickle spent time in jail, the result of a decade-long career in sales - in the drug business. Today, rather than sit around and wait for the phone to ring to be booked at a local comedy club, Pickle has crossed over to the other side of the microphone and produces comedy shows. These shows are principally called Roast Beefin'.  Roast Beefin's are comedy roasts where two comedians battle each other in a kind of cutting competition. You can see Roast Beefin' mostly at the Hi Ho –Lounge - where it's been anchored since 2020. Although producing comedy shows in what is principally a music venue and bar in St Claude might sound like a fun way to make a living, Pickle describes the local comedy industry as “competitive and ruthless.” In 1946 a show opened on Broadway called Annie Get Your Gun. A number of songs from that show have survived to this day. Maybe the most well-known is a song called “There's No Business Like Show Business.” On the one hand the song is a love letter to the world of live performance. And on the other, it's a wry observation of the kind of addiction behavior that seems to underlie the world of entertainers. This verse might say it best:“Even with a turkey that you know will foldYou may be stranded out in the coldBut still you wouldn't change it for a sack of goldLet's go on with the show” Chris and Pickle, as producers of comedy in New Orleans, have both chosen a tough path. But although it might sound trite, it's true – somebody has to do it. We need comedy, and comedy demands comedians.  Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. Anthem number two! This time, we're looking at an anthem for this business we call show: "There's No Business Like Show Business," written by Irving Berling for 1946's Annie Get Your Gun. While that's still a popular show, the song has definitely broken free and is now widely recognized as perhaps the definitive song about the ups and downs of a life lived on the stage. For this episode, we'll be discussing both the song, and Ethel Merman, who very much made it one of her signature songs, even though she wasn't the one who sang it in the show.  All clips are from 1972's Merman Sings Merman and are protected by the Fair Use guidelines of Section 107 of the Copyright Act for criticism and commentary. Stāsta dziedātāja Annija Putniņa. Ērvina Berlina (Irving Berlin) īstais vārds ir Izreals Beilins, un viņš dzimis 1888. gadā Sibīrijas pilsētā Tjumeņā. Ebreju izcelsmes dēļ viņa ģimenei nācās pamest dzimto pilsētu, lai emigrētu uz tālo Ameriku. Berlinam bija tikai pieci gadi, kad ģimene ieradās Ņujorkā. Savu pirmo dziesmu “Mērija no saulainās Itālijas” viņš publicēja 1907. gadā, bet 1911. gadā izdotā dziesma “Alexander's Ragtime Band” padarīja Berlinu ļoti populāru. Ar šo hitu aizsākās viņa veiksmes ceļš. Berlinu dēvē par amerikāņu dziesmu rakstīšanas meistaru, un viņš patiešām ir sarakstījis simtiem dziesmu, kas zināmas visā pasaulē – “Blue Skies”, “Puttin' on a Ritz”, “Cheek to Cheek”, “There's No Business Like Show Business” un daudzas citas. Viņa melodijas dzirdamas Holivudas filmās, kas veicinājis vēl lielāku to atpazīstamību līdz pat mūsdienām. Lai gan savas dzīves laikā Ērvins Berlins piedzīvojis tā saucamo Brodvejas zelta laikmeta ēru, komponists sarakstījis tikai dažus mūziklus: “Call Me Madam” (1950), “Mr. 1928. gadā, tieši Ziemassvētku dienā, pēkšņi saslimis, no šīs pasaules aizgāja viņa jaundzimušais dēls. * https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/20-best-selling-singles-all-time/

Sonny Rollins needs no introduction here but this incredible album that is tonight's Jazz Feature is often overlooked in favor of some others yet it represents an early milestone in Sonny's life and career. He had recovered from his drug addiction and a healthy Sonny joined the famous Max Roach/Clifford Brown Quintet which was one of the finest Jazz groups at that time in the mid 50's. This was his first album after his rehab and it presents a new and stronger Sonny and is considered his first "great' record. It was Sonny's first 12' LP and issued on Prestige Records as "Work Time". Sonny's hand picked quartet consists of the great Max Roach on drums and strong bassist George Morrow and on Miles Davis' recommendation a fine then young pianist from Philadelphia named Ray Bryant. There is only one Rollins original on this date called "Paradox". The set opens with Irving Berlin's "There's No Business Like Show Business" then Paradox then Billy Strayhorn's "Raincheck" followed by the great ballad "There Are Such Things" and the set ends with Cole Porter's "It's All Right With Me". Worktime is historic and a real beginning for Sonny Rollins and it's tonight's Jazz Feature.

Today is the 95th birthday of the woman that is an American icon, even fifty years after her death: Marilyn Monroe. Do yourself a favor and watch The Misfits sometime soon. You won't be disappointed. One of my favorite stories about her is that for 20 years after her death, Joe Dimaggio had red roses delivered to her crypt twice a week. Generations of flower shop delivery boys learned the story, made the drive to visit her final resting place in honor of their baseball hero, replace the 3-day old roses with new ones, touch the her bronze name placard and understood the true meaning of eternal love. The world is a better place because she was in it and still feels the loss that she has left. Song: "Heat Wave" sung by Marilyn Monroe from There's No Business Like Show Business (1954) written by Irving Berlin for the 1933 musical As Thousands Cheer. For the last few months, I have been trying to grapple with the loss of my primary art form. When theatres shut down back in March, it was painful but we all hoped it was temporary – just a little disruption in our theatre lives. As time has worn on, and the virus has gotten worse here in the US than it was when they shut the theatres down (Florida reported 12,000 cases this week, which is twice what New York had back in April at the height of things.) it has become increasingly clear that theatre won’t be back any time soon. The art and business that we knew and loved is dead. There’s a small chance of zombification but theatre as we knew it is probably over. To read more of Theatre Is Dead. Mitzi Gaynor was just a teenager when she came to Hollywood. She wound up starring with Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe, dancing with Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor, and headlining The Ed Sullivan Show with The Beatles. Her movies include There’s No Business Like Show Business, Les Girls and South Pacific—and that’s just a fraction of her career. How many people can say they worked with Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and Rodgers and Hammerstein? Leonard and Jessie had great fun with this playful, ever-youthful woman who caught the tail end of Hollywood’s Golden Age.

Gary and Roscoe's "little grey cells" get a workout when rising star and Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble member Jon Michael Hill Read Bio visits the show. Coming to you remotely from the new 80-seat 1700 Theatre performance space at Steppenwolf. Jon is currently starring in Constellations by Nick Payne at the Upstairs Theater at Steppenwolf, along with the luminous Jessie Fisher. "It's a beautiful, elliptical and elegant exploration of all that is possible when two people meet," says Artistic Director Anna D. Shapiro. "It deals, simultaneously, with the beauty and mystery found in the unknowable vastness of the universe and the ways in which we attempt to define ourselves in a desperate effort to stave off entropy." Only 80 minutes, and it will blow your mind. Constellations runs through July 3. Jon also co-stars as Detective Marcus Bell with Johnny Lee Miller, Lucy Lui and beloved Chicago actor Aiden Quinn in the hit CBS series Elementary.......the show that imagines Sherlock Holmes living in modern-day Manhattan, helping the NYPD solve crimes. It's Gary's favorite show! No kidding. After discussing the new 80-seat 1700 Theatre performance space and adjoining Front Bar read full story here, we get down to business with Jon about acting, his upbringing, past shows (including his Tony Award-nominated performance in Tracy Letts' Superior Donuts!), and his band The Wolves. Jon and the band can be seen in the 1700 Theatre on July 13 & 14. Tickets are scarce and only $12. Gary tells of some notable figures from Jon's hometown of Waukegan, IL, including Ray Bradbury, Vincent Price, Jerry Orbach, Jack Benny, Otto Graham, and film actor of the1930s-1950s, Mickey Kuhn, who appeared with Vivien Leigh in both. Mickey Kuhn Jon shares his love of Chicago, all kinds of music, and classic films, from Wings of Desire to The 400 Blows to Army of Shadows. Mr. Hill is certainly somewhat to keep and eye on as his career continues to move forward in leaps and bounds. Stage, television and film actor, musician, film lover, and about the nicest guy you will ever meet, Jon Michael Hill is Booth One all the way! Kiss of Death - Jane Little, world's longest serving orchestra musician. Ms. Little collapsed during a recent performance of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Ironically, the symphony was performing a pops concert called "Broadway's Golden Age", and 30 seconds from the end of Irving Berlin's "There's No Business Like Show Business", the long-time bassist collapsed and was carried backstage by fellow musicians. She never regained consciousness. There was sadness among orchestra members and patrons alike, but also a sense of poetic beauty to the timing of Little's death, doing what she so loved for more than 70 years. Hollywood could not have scripted it better. Jane Little was 87. read full obit
