On this week's Richard Crouse Show: It's hard to remember now, but there was a time when we were not tethered to our smart phones. A new film, “BlackBerry,” starring Jay Baruchel and Matt Johnson, and now playing in theatres, vividly recreates the scrappy story of friendship, betrayal and hubris that began our obsession with our phones. Today, we going to focus on that story, courtesy of the film BlackBerry, which opens in theatres on May 12. There was a time when the Canadian made, odd little phone, with a QWERTY keyboard, encrypted messaging and low data cost, was a status symbol, used by some of the world' most powerful people. In the hands of everyone from President Barack Obama and Justin Timberlake to Katy Perry and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, the phones helped the world communicate in a whole new way. They were the original smart phones, which makes their Canadian creators Mike Lazaridis and Doug Fregin, visionaries, the men who gave us the future. Recently I sat down with BlackBerry co-writer, co-star and director Matt Johnson, and Jay Baruchel who stars as the awkward genius behind the BlackBerry tech, Mike Lazaridis. Matt is the director of The Dirties, which won Best Narrative Feature at the Slamdance Film Festival, Operation Avalanche, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and mockumentary television series Nirvanna the Band the Show. You know Jay from his voice role as Hiccup Haddock in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, and for roles in Knocked Up, Tropic Thunder, The Trotsky, Fanboys, She's Out of My League, Goon, This Is the End, and the action-fantasy film The Sorcerer's Apprentice. You can also see him as the host of We're All Gonna Die (Even Jay Baruchel) on Crave. BlackBerry is the story of the company Research in Motion, Jim Balsillie, the hotheaded businessman, played by Glenn Howerton, who was there for the rise and fall of the iconic company. “BlackBerry” isn't just a business story or the story of innovation. Instead, it is an underdog tale that emphasizes the human foibles that led to RIM's downfall, not just the financial ones. We began the interview with the idea of talking about the film, but were soon sidetracked by a discussion inspired by the lessons learned from the film, about what it means to be Canadian, why we don't celebrate our own stories and much more. Stay tuned, it often doesn't sound like an interview as much as a conversation we might have had over a drink or two. Like the movie we were supposed to concentrate on, before the conversation took a few left turns, the interview is passionate, patriotic, funny and not quite what you might expect.

Life After Winning Sundance with Diane BellI always talk about not counting on the "lottery ticket" mentality that so many filmmakers today count on. Winning Sundance is not a distribution plan. Well I was involved in a project, written and directed by Diane Bell, that did just that. It won not one but two awards at Sundance. She didn't count on winning, hell she didn't think in her wildest dreams that she would even be accepted. Here's the story. In 2010, 16 feature films were selected out of 1,058 submissions to be screened in the US Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival. Diane Bell's OBSELIDIA was one of them. It was made for less than $140,000, it had no movie stars in it, and none of the cast or crew had connections to Sundance. And yet it was picked out of the slush pile, and selected to premier on this world stage, alongside movies that had cost 100 times as much with big name movie stars and recognized directors.OBSELIDIA, premiered in the US Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival 2010, where it won the Alfred P. Sloan Award and the award for Excellence in Cinematography. It was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards 2011, including one for Best First Screenplay. It won acclaim at festivals around the world, including being named as Best of Fest at the Edinburgh Film Festival, Best Narrative Feature at Ashland Independent Film Festival, and winning the Youth Jury Prize for Best Film at the Valladolid Festival, Spain. If you ever wanted to know what it was like to be accepted and win awards at the Sundance Film Festival sit back and enjoy on conversation with Diane Bell.

Matty P Radio Presents: Marks v. Pros & Saturday Morning Cereal
Take some time this week to remember your original happy hour: Saturday mornings as a kid, waking up at dawn, jumping on the couch with a bowl of chocolate cereal, turning on the ‘toons, tuning out the outside world and working your way into a sugar hangover before noon. This week we we remember, rehearse and reboot with guests Daphne Maxwell Reid and Michelle Danner. Everyone remembers Reid as an iconic TV mom of the 1990s, from her three seasons as "Aunt Vivian" on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. And Reid couldn't be more excited when the cast reunited 30 years later for an unscripted reunion special that aired on HBO Max. These days Reid is a Renaissance woman, respected artist, designer and education activist. Daphne is living proof that a passion for creativity and a dedication to hard work can ensure a lifetime's worth of success. And if that weren't enough… There aren't many people who can point to a career full of success as a performer, teacher, storyteller, entrepreneur, and expert. But Michelle Danner can. The legendary acting teacher and co-founder of the Edgemar Center for the Arts and the Los Angeles Acting Conservatory joins us to talk about here craft and her well-established success as a feature film director. Danner's latest film Bad Impulse, is a psychological thriller about family secrets and modern technology. The film won Best Narrative Feature at the International Independent Film Awards and the Best Director Award at the Culver City Film Festival. Join hosts Grim Shea, Marke and Bleeding Cool's Jimmy the Gent as they try to keep up with the icon and the teacher to maybe learn something about the pop-culture that can't stop remaking itself and a little bit about themselves in the process.

Danner's recent film “Bad Impulse,” is a psychological thriller about family secrets and modern technology, starring Sonya Walger, Grant Bowler, and Paul Sorvino. The film recently won Best Narrative Feature at the 2019 International Independent Film Awards and the Best Director Award at the 2019 Culver City Film Festival. Her upcoming film “The Runner,” was filmed before the pandemic started. I know of no one savvier about getting it done and moving forward than actor, director, inventor, innovator, mentor, treasured friend, and Golden Globe Nominee for Happy Days, Anson Williams. Anson's wisdom has been invaluable to me, and he shared loads of it with us. And, fantastic stories––how he created opportunities as a kid, and then with Garry Marshall, Ron Howard, Steven Speilberg, QVC, the IPs he's developing now, and his lifesaving, Alert Drops, created with his 2nd cousin Henry Heimlich. Anson shared about the people who've shaped and inspired him, and a couple of examples of how he's paid it forward––something he's done all of his life and continues to do to this day, including wisdom for me––for us––shared here. Like, how to get off the couch and out of pandemic quicksand, the value of perceived failure, the three most important words (and why they are), and give what you want to get… these were just a few of the life tool gems Anson shared. Anson leads by example, just yesterday he was awarded Best Director for Viral Vingenttes by the Crown Point International Film Festival. The film also won Best Narrative Feature and Best Ensemble. Along with Donny Most, Anson's long-time best friend since Happy Days, Anson won The Best Acting Duo Award from the International Short Film Festival for Harvest Time, which he also directed. Anson never lets grass grow, he's always got all the burners cooking. Thanks to his not so gentle nudges, this show and I, continue to shift. I always hear Anson in my head nudging me forward. Today, thanks to the power of his example of mentorship, I tried something new, broke my routine, to shake things up and move forward. Oh, I still complained, but progress, not perfection. I couldn't love and adore this man, more. I'm inspired anew and trust you will be, too. My next guest is a writer director who started out life playing guitar in a heavy rock band. When that went belly up, he tried his hand at an equally tough career to crack – making films. His second choice seems to be working out a lot better. To date he's picked up over 40 awards for his films and screenplays in categories such as Best Director, Best Narrative Feature, Best Short Film, Best Screenplay, Gran Jury Award, Special Jury Award and Audience Choice. After a sometimes hair-raising spell directing reality shows, he got to direct his first feature, a comedy called The Truth About Lies, in 2015. We'd never met before this podcast, but after just a few minutes chatting with Phil Allocco, I felt an immediate connection. In fact, we had quite a blast. Here's that take. The movie’s title, a message of hope for the future, could easily apply to the filmmaker as well. - LA TIMES | Glenn Whipp There are some films that mesmerize like a slowly burning fire. The embers, glowing shades of red, gold and orange, mixed with smoky black, pop and explode unexpectedly, and the sparks keep the onlooker from getting too close. That is exactly the feeling that is evoked in the new film by Storm Saulter called Better Mus’ Come. - HUFFINGTON POST | Craig Carpenter youtube.com/jrwatkis IG: @jrwatkis twitter.com/jrwatkis Links: www.sprinterthefilm.com www.planbfree.comwww.affrm.com Contact: storm@stormsaulter.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thetopformpodcast/support

Adam, Sarah and Face2Face host David Peck talk about paradox, their new film Great Great Great, why love and relationships are never linear, why nothing lasts forever and what might lie below the surface. She received a BFA in Film Studies from Ryerson University, and is one half of the sketch comedy duo Ex-Adults. Synopsis Great Great Great is a dark comedy about the uncertainty in long-term relationships. In the span of Lauren and Tom’s five-year relationship, they’ve never had a fight. Their sex life is fine. They get along fine. Everything points to marriage, until Lauren suddenly sees a lifetime of “just fine” yawning ahead of her, and it immediately makes her hungry for a better, fuller future. She just has to decide what “better” really means. One moment Lauren resolves to double down on her commitment to Tom, and the next moment she is ready to blow the whole thing up. So, Lauren does what any reasonable person would do - she does not choose. She does both. In a doomed attempt to have everything she wants without giving anything up, Lauren simultaneously starts an affair with her boss, rents a bachelor apartment, and asks Tom to marry her. When they start to plan the wedding, and her no-strings affair gets complicated, Lauren struggles to save what is most important to her before she loses it all. Great Great Great is a deeply relatable portrait of a woman who makes us squirm with discomfort while asking us to love some of the most unlovable parts of ourselves.
"Drown" premiered in San Diego earlier this year at FilmOut where it won six awards including Best Narrative Feature, Best Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Soundtrack and Outstanding Artistic Achievement. "Drown" is a difficult film to watch but for all the right reasons.

Chris Schwab is an independent filmmaker who grew up in North Carolina and started making his own films in high school. He has since moved to Los Angeles and made two feature films, Look Closer and Neither Day Nor Night, as well as a number of shorts. His early exposure to Martin Scorsese's Goodfella's left a deep impression on him and he has been learning and growing as a filmmaker ever since. His latest film Look Closer has just won Best Narrative Feature at the Los Angeles Reel Film Festival and was also an official selection at the Cape Fear Independent Film Festival. When I was looking for someone to create the trailers for my book he was the first person I called. I have also had the pleasure of working with Chris to create the sound for both of these features. I asked Chris to be on the Podcast for two reasons. Because he is able to imagine something he wants to create and regardless of the obstacles before him, money, time, or resources, he seems to have a way of making it happen. He is one of the kindest, most down to earth people I have ever met.
