Last week we brought you Stevie Williams and this week we're bringing you his teammate, and another man you've wanted to hear from for ages: Michael Woods. His story is a relatively well known one at this point: elite runner turned cyclist. But we got to dig a bit deeper with Woodsy, spending 40 minutes with the charismatic Canadian. Michael now has 16 wins to his name, having joined the WorldTour just nine years ago. His story is a remarkable one. He also happens to be Tom's favourite rider, so he really enjoyed today's chat. In other news, G's finally back from the land Down Under. He's got a Cadel Evans Road Race debrief for us, and the guys get stuck into the chaos that unfolded at Etoile de Besseges last week. We are also very excited to confirm that our ROUVY rides are back for 2025. Come and join the fun every Wednesday at 18:30 UK time. One man's name came up time and again when we asked you who you'd love to hear on the pod this season: Stevie Williams. G's compatriot Stevie had a stunning 2024 season and he joined the guys to tell them how he overcame a debilitating knee issue after he turned pro to realise his potential. This season? Just the small matter of repeating the feats of last season. It'll be fascinating to see how he copes with the challenge. Meanwhile, G's safely home from a great month in Australia. He gave Tom an in-depth rundown of the action. Who else would you like to hear from on the GTCC? Let us know by emailing gtcc@crowdnetwork.co.uk. It's a feat that needs no introduction. As we approach the 25th anniversary of Tiger Woods' four-major run from the 2000 US Open through the 2001 Masters, a new book from former Sports Illustrated and Golf Magazine editor Kevin Cook unearths never-before-seen nuggets from this historic stretch. Cook joins host Tom Coyne to discuss The Tiger Slam, Cook's moment-by-moment chronicle that features interviews with Stevie Williams, Mark O'Meara, Butch Harmon and many others. They relive the indelible images of the Slam, including Tiger's landslide victory at Pebble and his nailbiting duel with Bob May at Valhalla, but the true treasures lie in details that have remained hidden until now. You'll learn what Tiger said to Phil walking off 13 tee at Augusta, why his team nearly scuttled his “Sportsman of the Year” dinner at the last minute, and which major Tiger played using only one tee. (Hint: It was the same one in which a nude exotic dancer paraded across the 18th green. Try finding that on a YouTube rewatch.) Kevin Cook is a former senior editor of Sports Illustrated and former editor in chief of Golf Magazine. In addition to a long career in the sports periodicals industry, Kevin has also published a number of books, the most well-known of which is Tommy's Honor, chronicling the fascinating life of Young Tom Morris during golf's early years in and around St Andrews. Cook's newest book, The Tiger Slam: The Inside Story of the Greatest Golf Ever Played details Tiger's unforgettable four-major stretch from the 2000 US Open to the 2001 Masters. Interview by Kris PetersMelbourne punk upstarts Clowns have epitomised the fun and frivolous side of Australian music since their inception in 2009.Their attitude towards music, coupled with almost legendary live performances, has seen Clowns rise quickly to prominence and notoriety, with their honest and raw appraisal of life through music connecting on a global scale. After receiving an ARIA nomination for their previous album Nature/Nurture in 2019, Clowns have just unleashed their latest slab of goodness in the form of Endless, a middle finger salute to the pandemic during which it was conceived and a snub to the face of those who thought that period of time would spell the death knell for a plethora of bands and musicians.HEAVY sat down with vocalist Stevie Williams and drummer Jake Laderman to talk through what to expect."It feels like I'm about to…," Williams measured, "… I don't have any kids, but this is what I imagine preparing for a child would feel like (laughs). Years and years of creative energy and the world going upside down from when we started writing it to when we finished recording and releasing it, but now it's here. It's satisfying and maybe a little bit emotional. I can't wait for it to be out in the world and not be our record anymore. It's gonna be whoever listens to its record."Endless is the fifth album release from Clowns, so we ask the question of whether the process gets any easier the more albums you put out."It definitely gets harder," Williams answered without thought. "I feel like when we started the band we were so inspired to get our music career off the ground and there was so much… I guess you would call it creative, low-hanging fruit when we were starting a punk band. We wanted to write a song that had screaming in it, we wanted a song that sounded like The Ramones, we wanted a song that sounded like the Offspring and then once we did an EP and four seven inches and now five albums, now we're reaching super high up to the top of the tree to get that sweet fruit, and we're doing Spaghetti Western eight-minute jams at the end of our record. We're fucking around with thrash metal and dual guitar solos, all in an effort to keep it interesting for ourselves and the people who listen as well. In that essence, it gets harder. It gets way harder (laughs)."In the full interview, the boys talk more about what to expect from Endless, how the singles released represent the album as a whole, the opening piano intro and why it was used, the central theme of immortality, the closing track A Widow's Song and the inspiration behind it, how Endless differs musically to Nature/Nature, upcoming shows and more.

On this special episode I'm joined by Robert Lusetich, writer of the book "Unplayable: An Inside Account of Tiger's Most Tumultuous Season" and we delve into Tiger Woods the man as opposed to just simply Tiger Woods the elite golfer. Lusetich shares insights of that dramatic Thanksgiving weekend in 2009 when Tiger's life unraveled, shocking things people wouldn't know about the 15-time major champion, how he very nearly gave up golf to become a Navy Seal and whether he thinks he can surpass Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 major titles! Lusetich also discusses his role in the recent 'Tiger' documentary on HBO, how the relationship between Woods and caddie Stevie Williams became fractured leading to a messy breakup & why Williams shockingly declared a victory as Adam Scott's caddy to be his greatest accomplishment. We discuss Patrick Reed bending the rules at Torrey Pines and the backlash that ensued, why Xander Schauffele can't seem to close out tournaments, Brooks Koepka's win in Phoenix, he breaks my heart when he reveals unsavory stories about my favourite golfer John Daly and last but certainly not least, Lusetich regales tales about working alongside Jay Onrait & Dan O'Toole in Los Angeles! DC all started with an idea to create an apparel company, by two friends who met in community college: Damon Way and Ken Block. Starting 8 Ball clothing, they shifted to Droors Jeans, after issues over branding Trademarks. Droors jeans became Droors clothing, which then transitioned to become DC shoes, as we know it today; a shoe company geared at providing technical skateboarding shoes. Fighting against brands like Champion and Converse, DC fought for it's place in establishing a logo, eventually settling on the DC with the 7 point star. Damon Way pulled in his brother, Danny, to ride for the brand, along with Colin Mckay, granting immediate respect. They then added industry icons like Stevie Williams, Josh Kalis, Greg Meyers, Lindsey Robertson, Caine Gayle, Rob Dyrdek and others. Taking all of these infamous pros on the DC super tour, in 1997. They then went on to release the DC Video, showcasing the diversity and talent their team had to offer. DC has gone on to release multiple infamous shoes like the Lynx, Court, and Stevie williams pro model. They've also collaborated with brands such as Dime, Baker, and Supreme, and artists such as Kaws, or Andy Howell. DC has navigated lawsuits with brands such as Dolce and Gabanna, DC comics, was bought out by Quiksilver, and has navigated bankruptcy. They've restructured several times, most notably in the rediscover DC campaign, where they added skaters like Mikey Taylor, Nyjah Huston, Wes Kremer, Evan Smith, T Funk and more. DC has also had to part with beloved team members like Dyrdek, Chris Cole, and Mikey when times got tough. Let us know what your favourite era of DC is in the comments below! What’s up, skaters?! Welcome back to Vent City. There will be a mandatory 14-day podcast quarantine for any listeners coming to the show for the first time, where you will have to listen to every single episode across a two-week period all alone in your room. Honestly, it’s a fate worse than death, but we don’t make the rules. On today’s episode we have three relatively isolated individuals attempting to connect over their lifelong time-wasting passion. They are Ted Schmitz—who writes these notes in third person like a complete narcissist that really needs the attention—along with Ted Barrow from his writer’s lodge in Berkely (sp?), Californ-i-yay, and professional anti-popsicle-stick rider Ryan Lay. Where are the rest of the people on the show? Good question. Send them all DMs and demand they get re-edited into this ep. Or leave them alone cause they’re fucking busy and need to do their jobs well without your nonsense. We are discussing the return of two absolute KINGS, Brandon Turner and Stevie Williams…wait, actually THREE KINGS including THE YOSHE! That’s right this episode has a full fifteen minute appreciation of Yoshi Tenninbomb (sp?). VC is the only skateboarding podcast willing to dedicate this much time to the Virginian treasure. Why not spend the time talking about Bobby Worrest instead? Because, although he is a fine skater, let’s be honest, he is the Waluigi to Yoshi’s…well…Yoshi. Does the rest of the cast co-sign this message? Probably not, but they don’t write the show notes. With that said we also investigate what one skate pundit has coined “Good Guy” Syndrome that might be—but probably isn’t—the leading cause of burnout among technically proficient adult skaters. Anyway, that’s just to say a lot of people have had the sponsor ladder be the carrot in front of their stick stick for so long they really don’t know what to do with themselves once they lose their early-twenties bag. Without getting too preachy about it (although the episode is basically a masterclass on how to do the skate sermon right [this phrase should not be confused with whatever the fuck Brian Sumner does]) it's pretty cool to be oky with getting worse. And finally there is an out-of-time, off-key ode to our forepodcasters where, like, half the shoutouts were accomplished, leading to a straight-up reading of every name on the list of our Pro-flow Patreon tier. Thank you again, everyone. We love you. Mission Statement

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 11, 2020 74:08

William Strobeck, known simply as Bill by those closest to him, is this generation’s Spike Jonze. In 2014, he singlehandedly changed the direction of modern skate videos with the release of “cherry”. It was the first full-length from both Strobeck and Supreme, and had a similar impact to Jonze and Mark Gonzales’s Video Days when that debuted in 1991.“cherry” introduced the world to a group of skaters that would go on to become icons. At the time, most videos felt like blockbuster movies that were far removed from the D.I.Y. spirit that birthed them. With street life vignettes that feel like you are watching the sessions live, Strobeck brought back an aesthetic that was lost sometime during the transition from standard to high definition. It had clearly been missed.Bill’s trajectory was foreshadowed over a decade earlier. Before Tyshawn Jones, Na-Kel Smith, and “BLESSED”, there was Anthony Pappalardo, Brian Wenning, and Photosynthesis. He cut his teeth during the Josh Kalis and Stevie Williams era at Love Park. And his footage helped craft the Sovereign Sect’s look during its golden age. With that sort of pedigree, no one should be surprised by what Strobeck would go on to accomplish after. But Bill didn’t get to where he is today without a little bit of luck. His Alien Workshop years were the start of an ongoing collaboration with Jason Dill. This friendship has landed him in “the right place at the right time” at multiple points during his career. The connection with Dill and a breakup with a longtime girlfriend were responsible for transplanting Strobeck to New York in 2002 after a seven-year stint in Philly. And N.Y.C. would prove to be a key element in the progression of his craft. There were still shades of the old New York during those initial post-911 years. Bill, Dill, Chloë Sevigny, Ben Cho, Leo Fitzpatrick, Dash Snow, the Razo brothers, etcetera’s gallivanting between Max Fish, Sway, and The Hole is well-documented in the archives of Patrick O’Dell’s Epicly Later’d blog. They seemed to be the heirs apparent of the Downtown scene created by Warhol, Basquiat, Futura, Jim Jarmusch, Debbie Harry, and the rest of the legendary denizens of ‘80s L.E.S. Mingling with artists, designers, actors, and fashionistas allowed Strobeck to further develop his eye for what’s cool. This influence is highly visible in his output over the past six years. Instead of just showcasing tricks, Strobeck creates a mood through providing a glimpse into his subjects’ lifestyles. It’s more in line with what Larry Clark and Mathieu Kassovitz did with KIDS and La Haine, respectively, than a traditional skate video. And it works so seamlessly with Supreme’s branding that it's hard to imagine anyone else making its films. Currently, you’d be hard-pressed to watch one of the dozens of skate edits that are released weekly and find one that doesn’t borrow a little (or a lot) from Strobeck’s work. If those that shape the culture is the underlying theme of Mission Statement, there isn’t a more fitting guest for our 2020 season premiere.

Let's be real, skateboarding wasn't always as glamorous as the X-Games, Big Air, and million dollar sponsorships. For most, it was an escape, something that bonded people together, and allowed you to define yourself. Nino Scalia was someone who had little stability growing up. Moving from city to city, there wasn't an opportunity to establish roots, or even have close friends - and if it did happen, it was taken away just as fast. When introduced to skateboarding, Nino instantly found something he could grab on to. As his family finally settled in South Philly, it was just in time for Nino to be a part of what became one of the most influential skateboarding cities in the world. With other greats, like Rob Dyrdek, Josh Kalis, Stevie Williams, and Jason Dill, there was a new age of pioneers to push skateboarding forward. Nino's story takes us through that special era and his days of skating (and getting arrested) at LOVE Park, becoming the Team Manager for the legendary Alien Workshop, and later working with Pharrell in developing the Ice Cream skate team. If you want to get a taste of what this was like, Nino captures it perfectly in the indie-film, Street Dreams. Through all that he's has done, Nino will tell you that he was never ready for any of it. There's no perfect moment, or right time. Just go for it, and if you fall, get back on your board and try again. #MamaWeMadeIt See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Let's get something straight - Melbourne's Clowns have been out terrorising unsuspecting victims in the dead of night long before any of these other posers. The Melbourne band are one of the country's most in-demand touring bands, having shared stages this year alone with previous guests The Bennies and The Sword as well as knocking headlining shows out of the park both her and abroad. Recorded while the band were in Wollongong on their tour supporting the aforementioned Bennies, vocalist Stevie Williams and bassist James "Herny" Ahern clocked in for a half-hour of power, taking us from sleeping on sidewalks in San Jose to selling out shows across the country. Clowns begin their "Destroy the Evidence" tour tonight in Brisbane at Crowbar, before taking on Black Wire Records this weekend, the 15th (sold out) and 16th of October; and the Evelyn in Melbourne on the 21st. Bob said that even though he hasn't been a proponent of the wrap around season, he does admit that it has been a very interesting start to the new season with the different first time winners. Jordan Spieth is playing in his first tournament in about a month. Spieth said it was his longest break from golf since he was 12 years old. Bob talks with Holly about Jordan's busy schedule and how he manages his schedule going into 2016 as the reigning FedEx Cup champion. Holly mentions that Victor Dubuisson captured a win on the European Tour and what that means for the player who gave up his PGA Tour and is now focusing mainly on the European Tour. Holly asks Bob about Stevie Williams book that recently was released. Williams was the caddie for many years for Tiger Woods and lately Adam Scott.  Bob said that Steve is a heck of a caddie and has been complemented by everyone he has caddied for. Bob said that it is a shame that Stevie has held on to a grudge for so long when there was so much good to talk about with he and Tiger's great teamwork and the success they had for all of those years.  Bob talks about all the things that seem petty that Stevie focused on. Probably some good insight that might be being overlooked because of the Tiger comments that have gained so much attention. There are a lot of guys who go through caddies many times. The most successes have been the golfers who have stuck with the same guy and has been a good fit over the years. Bob also added that even the best relationships between player and caddie that come to an end. Mental Conditioning Coach Dr Bob Winters, David Leadbetter Academy, joins Holly G in the studio for the rest of the show. Holly asks Bob about the success of some of his players of late. Dr Bob said that 3 of the top 5, including the first and second place finishers, in the recent Latin American tournament have been or are students of his.  What is it that keeps fear out of some of the great players during pressure packed situations?  Composure with repeated exposure. Thomas double bogeyed the 14th and caddie Jimmy Johnson was able to keep Justin in the moment. Made three birdies and a clutch five footer to end up winning.  Steve Eubanks, Global Golf Post, calls in to talk to Dr Bob and Holly G, calls in to speak with the duo about China banning golf for all of its members. "Until you go over and see it and see the reaction that the Asian fans especially when the LPGA players are there is something to see," he said.   Holly mentions that Volvik is sponsoring a new event over Memorial Day weekend in the next year. Steve comments that there are a lot of Korean companies who are actively involved with the LPGA. Steve said that the television audience when Korean players are in contention are twice the numbers in the USA and sometimes three times as much. East Lake Cup at the Atlanta Golf Club. The Top 4 collegiate men and women's teams to play against one another. Illinois beat Georgia on the men's side and UCLA beat Duke on the women's side. Holly and Steve talk about the Charles Schwab Cup at Desert Mountain this week. Bernhard Langer, Colin Montgomerie and Jay Haas are in a three way run for the title. Almost every week this season Monty and Langer have been at the top of the leader board in almost every Champions Tour event that they played in this year. Steve and Holly talk about the upcoming Race to the CME Globe on the LPGA Tour and some of the players in the hunt, like defending champion Lydia Ko. Steve talks about Ko's maturity and how she handles herself in every circumstance. Her game is amazing on top of that.  Dr Bob Winters talks about Lydia and spending time with her at the David Leadbetter Academy. Lydia has a presence about her and doesn't forget any of the little people and is gracious in all settings whether winning or losing.  Tony Judge, Clubs To Hire, calls in to talk with Holly G and Dr Bob about the newest location of his company in the Orlando. Clubs To Hire, originated in Europe and hires or rents a full set of clubs to a golfer for a week at a time to save them the expense of putting a golfer's own clubs on the airplane. Whether a golfing holiday with friends or family or business trips, Clubs To Hire saves golfers the hassle of bringing their own personal clubs through busy airport terminals, waiting for them at excess luggage, paying extreme carriage charges and then worrying about them possibly being stolen or damaged. Club To Hire has 3 destinations in the United States has a set ready to hire or rent at the airport of your choice. $80 for a complete set of the latest clubs that you choose for a whole week.  Dr. Bob helps wrap up the Show talking about his latest book, Mistake Free Golf and how it can help anyone with their game.
