Hemlocks to Hellbenders
Here's how Pennsylvania fights nearly 2,000 wildfires every year

Michaux State Forest is the place I spend the most time outdoors. Located about 30 miles from where I live, it's where I hike and camp. It's where I bring visitors to show off the South Mountain region. It's where I breath in fresh air and explore the beauty of the Commonwealth. It's my safe place away from the goings-on of Harrisburg. But that safety was shattered in April 2025. I received text messages from friends telling me that Michaux was on fire. Then, news came that there were two fires. And they were spreading. With wind and no rain in the forecast it became evident that the situation could get bad quickly.Over the following two weeks, I'd see photos and videos of the fires spreading across the forest I loved. Friends were evacuated from their homes. Roads were closed. Massive clouds of smoke billowed across the area. People were scared. The beautiful landscape I loved was on fire and there was nothing I could do but watch. But thanks to incredibly brave firefighters and with a little help from the weather, the Thompson Hollow and Hammond Rocks fires were extinguished in 14 days. Over 150 fire companies from 10 Pennsylvania and Maryland counties battled the blaze. Approximately 2,700 acres were destroyed by the wildfires. Luckily, no homes or private property was damaged and only two people suffered minor injuries. And, predictably, a determination was made that the fires were human caused, like 99 percent of all wildfires. Here's the thing. While the situation was scary for many in the area – even for us 40 minutes from the fires – this is a common occurrence in Pennsylvania. There's between 1,000 and 2,000 wildfires every year in Commonwealth. And the majority of those wildfires occur in the spring. These fires so close to home was a sobering reminder of the ever-present danger of wildfires. With Michaux still charred from the fires, I wanted to know more about wildfires and the wildland firefighters that have to put them out. On this episode, I speak with Mike Kern. Mike is the Chief Forest Fire Warden for the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Be sure to support our 2025 sponsors:Keystone Trails AssociationPurple Lizard MapsPennsylvania Parks and Forests FoundationSisters' SunflowersSupport the showVisit our website to learn more about the podcast, to purchase merch and to find out about our incredible sponsors. As June approaches, it's essential to consider potential trades that could enhance the Phillies' roster in their pursuit of a World Series title. A critical question arises: what sacrifices are you willing to make to assemble a championship-caliber team? In relation to the Phillies, we will hear from Bryce Harper regarding the hit by pitch he endured, alongside Rhys Hoskins' return to South Philadelphia. In another development, the Eagles have traded Bryce Huff to the 49ers in exchange for a mid-round draft pick. What was initially seen as a promising acquisition quickly turned sour, leading to his departure after just one season. We will also engage with Mike Kern, who will share his perspectives on both the Phillies and the NBA Finals. Additionally, we will preview the NHL Finals, where the Oilers and Panthers are set to face off in a rematch from last season's championship series.

The Phillies are set to compete against the defending World Series champions, the LA Dodgers. As the first pitch approaches, we analyze the series matchup. While this encounter promises excitement, it is important to note that it occurs early in the MLB season, limiting its potential for providing additional insights. We also explore the Eagles' draft strategy, particularly in relation to the status of Dallas Goedert. An outside pass rusher appears to be the primary target, but if Goedert is no longer part of the roster, the team may need to consider finding a suitable replacement. Joining us on the show is Mike Kern, who will share his thoughts on the NFL Draft and offer his perspective on the structure of both the NCAA Men's and Women's games.

Drought watch declared in 33 Pennsylvania counties

Temperatures are unseasonably mild for November and along with that comes a lack of rainfall and drought watch for over 30 Pennsylvania counties. The dry conditions have also increased the risk of wildfire, with more than 100 reported statewide in the last several days. Mike Kern, Chief of Division of Forest Fire Protection at the Pennsylvania Department of Conversation and Natural Resources says the wildfires have not been following those dry areas. “So, the wildfires, not surprisingly, have been following those dry areas, the areas of drought especially. There's been a concentration in the southwest and also along the southern tier, but in the southeastern part of the state and then even up towards the Poconos.” As a result, the agencies have resulted in banning campfires in state parks and forests. Kern says the fires in Pennsylvania are being caused by people. “that's usually either burning at your home or using fire or some other manner campfires or wine. That's those are usually some of the biggest causes. There are some miscellaneous causes of fire, anything from power lines and high wind to equipment use and sparks and fireworks and a lot of that stuff. But burning by humans is a main cause of fires in Pennsylvania. So, we're just. Looking to stop campfires is a way to ensure that we don't have any, you know, anything that's abandoned or not put out. Right. And we're asking people not to not to burn until we get some significant rainfall at this point.”  Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“You look at some of these masters, older than me … you can't believe they're in their 50s and 60s, and let alone what they look like, but what they're doing, too. It's amazing.” Six-time CrossFit Games athlete Mike Kern joins host Adrian Conway on the show to share about his vast journey in CrossFit. Kern started CrossFit at 36 years old at the suggestion of his wife. He signed up for his first Open competition in 2013 and was hooked. Two years in, he decided to pursue his CrossFit Level 1 Certificate and soon after, he joined the staff at CrossFit Garden City. Kern made his CrossFit Games debut in 2016 in the Men's 40-44 division and finished second. He repeated this feat in 2021 and 2022 in the Men's 45-49 division, and most recently, Kern placed fourth in that division at the 2023 CrossFit Games in Madison. In today's episode, Kern tells his story of rekindling his desire to compete. He digs into why he became motivated to coach and how he juggles his roles in his family, and as an athlete, coach, and affiliate owner. As a 48-year-old masters athlete, Kern dives into how his training has changed over the years, explains the importance of recovery and nutrition to optimize performance, and shares how he prepares for competition. He also explains how CrossFit holds a big place in his family's life and offers his perspective on the evolution of the sport. Kern is co-owner of CrossFit Garden City. In addition to being a perennial Games athlete, he is a CrossFit Level 2 Trainer, a husband, and a father of three girls. Holly recaps her Arnie story from when she was a little girl and how that has impacted her life and career choice. For more about that story, see "Arnie and Me" on The Golf Insiders Blog. Will and Holly talk about what Arnie has done for the game of golf, the Golf Channel and how the people always were the most important thing. This weekend the National Women's Golf Association is having its Celebrity Scramble at Black Bear Golf Club to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida. The event is Saturday and Sunday. Butch Benton at Black Bear calls in to talk about this weekend's events. The cost for the two day event including golf is $150 per person. For more information call 352-357-4732 or visit Black Bear Country Club's website. In the second segment, Greg Wires Publisher Golf Minnesota calls in to talk about the Ryder Cup. Holly and Greg talk about Arnold Palmer's passing and how Arnie will be honored at the Ryder Cup this week. Holly mentions that with Arnie's passing there might be a 13th player on Team USA. Greg said that Darren Clarke mentioned in a press conference Arnie's Army was worldwide. Greg said that It's an unusual feeling while there is sadness with his passing, there is joy in rejoicing his life as well.  Holly asks Greg about the golf course at Hazeltine National Golf Club. Has had huge events, U.S. Open, PGA Championship, Ryder Cup and many. Greg and Holly talk about the way the course's holes are being switched around for the Ryder Cup this year for the fans and the competition.  It's not set up the way members play daily nor how it has been set up for Ryder Cups in the past. Holly asks Greg what might be some of the keys and strategies to playing the best golf at Hazeltine. Greg says that it's a big course and you have to be able to get the ball out there.  But when you are playing your teammates ball in some of the matches, it might not might make that big of a difference how far you hit it. Will asks Greg about the vibe around the area. Greg said that something surrounding the event now is an article where Danny Willet's brother didn't say nice things about American golf fans. Neither team was happy about the comments. If you want to take a trip to Minnesota and see the beautiful fall season while playing golf, visit www.golfminnesota.com.  In the third segment of the show, Holly and Will welcome long time sports writer Mike Kern from Philadelphia Daily News. Mike talks about Arnold Palmer. We knew his health was fading and then he didn't show up at Oakmont for the U.S. Open. The writing was on the wall. Mike said that "You would be hard pressed to find someone who didn't like Arnie. "There were so many contributions that Arnold Palmer made to the game of golf. He invented the grand slam, the Golf Channel and he helped increase the tournament purses. 100 years from now when people go through the history of golf his name will stand out. Mike said that there used to be a Senior Tour event in Philadelphia in the twilight of Palmer's career, and more people showed up to watch Arnie play with one of the early tee times than would show up to watch the leaders.  Holly and Mike tun their attention to this week's Ryder Cup. Mike says that in the past the problem has been that the Americans don't play well on Friday and Saturday. The Euros seem like they seem to play better together.  In the final segment of the show, Dr Bob Winters, mental conditioning coach and author of Mistake-Free Golf, calls in to talk about the Ryder Cup and the mental aspects of the tournament. The Europeans have a strong team with six new players and they have no scar tissue from previous Ryder Cup emotional scar tissue ... and they know each other very well. Team USA is a collection of individual egos that comes together once every two years and try to create some cohesive bond. On the other hand Team Europe has a collective ego, and consciousness I call it "Eurogo." Basically wherever one goes the others go too. Dr Bob feels that Team Europe will win. There is a lot more pressure on the USA, even though there are so many things stacked in Team USA's favor that it adds more pressure and we want to win so badly. I think in the end Europe will win and we will look and say, Wow, what do they have that we don't? They have a team ego. Will asks if the team concept that is something that is taught with coaching over time?  Dr Bob says that Together Everyone Achieves More - TEAM. The Europeans really like each other and hang out with one another. USA doesn't have that. Dr Bob feels that there are too many American brains involved --- five vice captains is too much over coaching. Check out Dr Bob's website at drbobwinters.com to see how he can help you with your game like he has helped so many pros and average Joes over the years.

Hasn't been a long time between Stenson's win at the Open Championship until now.  Bob talks about the tough course and the hot weather that is ahead for the players on a short notice. Holly and Bob talk about Rory McIlroy and other top golfer's chances to hoist the Wanamaker Trophy. Bob picks McIlroy to win. Mike Kern, Philadelphia Daily News, is the next guest who calls in from Baltusrol to talk about the PGA Championship. Dustin Johnson, Rory, Jason Day, and Phil are all playing well and could win.  But it's an old time course and has seen a lot of action over the years. Had some big names win there. Holly asks Mike about the Par 4s. Mike said he doesn't believe that any of the Par 4s are "driveable".  Mike feels that DJ will be in the mix, Rory, but would love to see Sergio Garcia win a major sometime. Jeff Babineau, Golfweek, calls in to talk about the 4th major of the season already. Jeff talks about Jason Day's press conference and other press conferences. Day is not feeling well. Some of the golfers seem inpatient. Some PGA Club professionals are also competing this week such as Matt Dobyns, Rod Perry right alongside the PGA Tour pros. Todd Lewis, The Golf Channel, joins the show from Baltusrol and talks about Phil Mickelson and the world class field at a very challenging course. Mentally they have to come ready to go.  Kevin asks about Henrik Stenson and how he is doing after his first major win. Todd feels that his win there will open the floodgates for Henrik. When he plays well, wins come in bunches. He won in June on the European Tour and follows that win up with the Open Championship win. Todd says that experience and having control of your emotions is key for players to be successful on the Tours. Holly asks Todd about Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia being two of the best players without a major championship. You get double Ryder Cup points at this event and Lee can get a big boost there.  You have to look at guys who are playing well right now. Todd feels the top 3 at this time are DJ, Henrik and Sergio. Long time sports writer and bestselling author Steve Eubanks, Global Golf Post, calls in to wrap up the show talking about USA's win at the UL International and the Women's British Open Championship.  Steve feels that Gerina Piller has a good chance to win this week's major even though she hasn't won. He said that Gerina has figured out her putting stroke and that was what was holding her back. Holly asks Steve about the PGA Championship. Sunday's final round with Stenson pitted against Phil Mickelson was one for the ages. Stenson carded an 8-under 63 to tie Johnnie Miller's lowest final round score by a major champion. His 20-under 264 was the lowest 72-hole score ever in a major championship. Phil shot a final round 65 and finished with a 267. Mike Kern, Philadelphia Daily News, calls in to talk with Holly G and Kevin about the Open Championship. Mike said that it was the second time in four years that someone shot 20-under-par in a major. Mike mentions that Phil started the championship just missing out on a record 62 after his ball lipped out on the 18th hole and then shoots a bogey-free round Sunday but still loses by two strokes. Holly talks about the slump Stenson was in for a couple of years and how he has come back. Mike mentions that Tiger went through two different slumps during his career and was able to come back and play at a high level. Jordan Spieth is in a little bit of a slump and so is McIlroy. Mike said that's what makes Tiger's feat of a 10-year stretch playing at such an unbelievable level so phenomenal.  Long time sports writer and bestselling author Steve Eubanks, currently with Global Golf Post, calls in from the UL International Crown in Chicago to share his thoughts about the Open Championship.  Steve talks with Holly about LPGA Tour and Lydia Ko's fourth win of the season at the Marathon Classic in Ohio. Lydia Ko and Brooke Henderson are the #1 and #2 players in the world will not be competing in the competition with not many other players for their country ranked high enough to qualify a team for the country. The trio kicks off the show talking about the great week of golf including the U.S. Open, won by Dustin Johnson. One of the main distractions for this year's U.S. Open and DJ is that the USGA had a questionable ruling on DJ on the 5th hole of his final round where the ball moved before he grounded his club behind the ball. He called the rules official over and told him that he did not cause the ball to move. The official told him to play on with no penalty. However, the USGA confronted DJ on the 12th hole and told him that they had reviewed the video evidence and requested that he review the footage after the round. Then it would be decided if he would incur the one-stroke penalty. Bob Harig, ESPN.com, calls in from Congressional to talk about last week's U.S. Open and the USGA's ruling on DJ. Bob said that in the media center that it was chaos and absolute disbelief as the events unfolded.  Kevin talks with Bob about the fact the ruling controversy not only was hard on Dustin, but it impacted the rest of the field not knowing how each player chasing the leader should attack the rest of the round. They did not know if Dustin was going to incur the penalty or if his current round's score was accurate. The team and Bob talk about the player's honor being called into question, which is paramount in the game of golf, not only for Dustin but Lee Westwood who was playing alongside DJ. In the end DJ was able to win by more than one stroke, which saved the USGA from an even greater PR nightmare. Bob said the key was that DJ had not addressed the ball. "Outside the USGA, I don't see anyone else who agrees with them." It happened to Shane Lowry the day before when he called the penalty on himself. USGA Rule 18b was revised in 2016, which was supposed to help shed some clarity on the subject. Tony Austin, Director of Programs for Core Golf Education in Orlando and also serves on the board for PGA of America as a member of the rules committee, call in for the second segment of the show to talk more about the ruling that affected this year's U.S. Open. Tony said that he felt for everyone involved including the committee. He said that he would have ruled that DJ had moved the ball because of his close proximity to the ball when it rolled, that DJ caused it to move. The problem was that the ruling wasn't made until after the round and not immediately when it happened. Tony pointed out that the rule is written that the committee can always take a look at something to get it right. It seemed like a non incident in real time. But the committee taking so long to bring it up and get it into the mainstream of the world was chaos.   Tony said as he was watching the event on TV, he didn't think that DJ caused the ball to move. He said he thought differently after he reread the rule. There didn't appear to be any wind, and DJ stood very close to the ball, and the fact that he put his putter down to the side and it touched the ground to some degree, Tony would have given DJ the penalty ... based on the way the rule is written.  The USGA and R&A definitely need to take a look at the rule and see what the intention of the rule is. Mike Kern, Philadelphia Daily News, calls in to the show to talk about the U.S. Open Championship. Mike talks to Holly about Dustin Johnson's play. When he is on he is as talented as anyone on the Tour. His putting usually holds him back. Holly asks Mike about Jim Furyk and the rest of the Top 10 on the leader board at the 2016 U.S. Open. Mike discusses the age of the Furyk and Mickelson and the fact that they don't usually win major championships in their 40s. Not that they can't but it's something that is usually not done. Jeff Shain, The Island Packet in Hilton Head, calls in to wrap up the show. Holly asks Jeff about the Olympics and the people like Rory McIlroy deciding not to participate in the Olympics due to the Zika virus. Jeff said that the golf schedule has a huge event over other week this season and a week off is a big deal to the players. None of the LPGA players have backed out of the Olympics. Jeff said that it seems that it would be a female golfer who has pulled out of the Olympics. Kevin, Will and Holly discuss the fact that it seems the women players seem more interested in the Olympics and not the men in the U.S.

Holly starts off the show talking with Todd Lewis, the Golf Channel. With all the talk about how hard the golf course set up, Holly asks Todd about the course at Oakmont. Todd asked the Tour players which do they fear the most, the fairway bunkers or the rough. Todd also points out that 6 of the 8 winners at Oakmont are in the World Golf Hall of Fame and big name players win at Oakmont.  On that note, Holly asks about Phil Mickelson's chances. Todd said that Phil can't get too excited and put too much pressure on himself because he is playing so well. That was his problem in 2013. Holly asks Todd about the Big 3's chances of winning this major. Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy.  Todd spoke with Dustin Johnson on the practice range and he feels that Dustin is playing well with every club in his bag. DJ put a 2 iron in his bag and will probably back off the driver this week. Todd says DJ can hit the 2 iron 260 yards in the air. Holly and Todd talk about the international players chances. Todd mentions past champion Martin Kaymer, and little known Matthew Fitzpatrick who has won twice on the European Tour twice. He finished tied for 7th at the Masters this year.  Jeff Babineau, Golfweek, calls in from the media center at Oakmont. Holly and Jeff talk about having the U.S. Open at such an historic place as Oakmont. There are no trees or water at Oakmont.  Will asks Jeff about Adam Scott who has won twice this season already. Jeff said that when you talk about the success of the Big Three, you tend to leave out great players with a chance like Scott, Snedeker, Mickelson, Bubba Watson, etc. Golfweek has a lot of coverage of the U.S. Open this week.  Brooke Anderson beat Lydia Ko to capture her first major last week. Bernhard Langer won another major on the Champions Tour as well as Daniel Berger win at the FedEx St Jude Classic on the PGA Tour. Mike Kern, Philadelphia Daily News, calls in to talk to Will and Holly about the U.S. Open. Players say that this is going to be the toughest test this year. Winged Foot, Oakmont and Olympic are three of the toughest courses.  Holly G asked Mike about Jim Furyk's chances. Mike also points out that McIlroy, Day and Spieth have done at the past seven majors is phenomenal.  Mike mentions that it is supposed to rain on Thursday, which is going to have an impact on the tournament that is already a formidable task to win. Steve Eubanks, Global Golf Post, wraps up the show talking about the KPMG Women's PGA Championship won by Brooke Henderson beating Lydia Ko an d preventing Ariya Jutanugarn from winning her fourth consecutive tournament. Holly asks Steve about the U.S. Open. Steve feels that over par will be the winning score this week. He likes Jason Day's chances of winning.

You can follow all the action of the Open Championship with this link to the Syndicated Widget.  Jeff has visited St. Andrews and says that there is no other place else that eats, sleeps and breathes golf like the people in Scotland who live around St. Andrews. There is as much away from the golf course and there is at The Old Course. The fans are very knowledgeable of the game and appreciative of good golf.   Mike Kern, Philadelphia Daily News, calls in from Scotland to talk to Holly and Jeff about the weather surrounding the Open Championship and how it will change the player's game over the next four days on the Old Course. There's a chance of rain Thursday and Friday and wind on the weekend. Mike says it's going to be a typical British Open and the rain will probably soften the course. Holly and Mike talk about Jordan Spieth's chances to win his 3rd consecutive Major championship this week at the Open Championship. Mike doesn't feel that Spieth will be able to do it because of the odds that are against him and are with the field. With all the great players of the past trying to win three in a row, the odds are not in favor of Spieth to win his 3rd Major. Dustin Johnson is a favorite because of his length off the tee.  Jeff asks Mike who he thinks will challenge Spieth if Jordan makes a run, who will make the run with him?  Mike feels that a player who can adjust to the conditions and also hit the ball far off the tee. Dustin Johnson or Justin Rose.  Spieth came back from 102nd last week at the John Deere Classic to win in a playoff.  Mike feels that Spieth is the best putter in the world right now and if you can putt you always have a chance. Holly feels that Jordan has the mental toughness that it takes and he doesn't sound like a 21-year-old.  Holly and Mike wrap up the segment talking about the news that Rory might be out until January.  Damon Hack, The Golf Channel, called in just before the show and spoke with Holly and Jeff about the Open Championship ... the weather and how it can affect players like it did Rory. Louis Oosthuizen was able to run away with it five years ago, because he was 15 minutes ahead of the weather and was already sitting in the club house watching the rest of the field play. Loves the bunkers in the United Kingdom golf courses and says there is nothing like them anywhere in the U.S. Holly talks about Jordan Spieth's chances. Damon said that he loved Spieth's quote from the press conference, "I'm not here to win 3 straight majors, I'm just trying to win the Open Championship." Tiger Woods, said he's not dead and buried, he still wants to play and is still hungry but I'm going through swing changes again and there will be steps forward and steps back. Damon questions whether Tiger's B and A games eclipse Spieth's and Dustin Johnson's now? Tiger feels comfortable at The Old Course. Holly asks Damon about the fans and the Open Championship crowds. "They love the game and applaud great shots even if they are still 40 feet from the hole. Extremely passionate and grateful and their role in this great game of golf. Damon loves Rickie Fowler's chances this week coming off his win last week in the Scotland Open and loves links players. Adam Scott reunited with Steve Williams and maybe Paul Casey's chances. A free week of golf instruction from the Gary Gilchrist Summer Junior Golf Camp valued at $1,850 is available to win just by registering on www.thegolfinsiders.com.  Dr Bob Winters, Mental Conditioning Coach from the David Leadbetter Academy, calls in from the Nike Golf Schools where he heads up the Nike Junior Golf Program near Williams College in northern part of Massachusetts. Holly asks how a player gets over past events like Dustin Johnson and deal with situations, worked with so many major open champions in the past 20 years I don't think they ever get over it. Failing is the fertilizer for future success. Dr. Bob says you can't ponder on it too much cause it destroys their focus. Remember Scott Hoch at the Masters and how he seemingly "gave it away" to Nick Faldo. Be interesting to see how DJ will rebound at the Open Championship from his loss at Chambers Bay. Dr Bob says that how you win a grand slam like Spieth is pursuing or win the Triple Crown like American Pharaoh just did is that you have to go out and compete in the event to win it. Jeff asks Dr. Bob how he feels the pairings at the Open Championship might affect DJ who is paired with Spieth given that Jordan just beat Johnson in the last event they faced each other? DJ can use it for motivation. Dr. Bob Winters also pointed out that there are a lot of distractions at the Open Championship other than just playing with the other player. "A key is taking ownership of the now and being in the present moment," Winters said.  "If you dwell on the past or think of the future you wind up way off course."  Mistake Free Golf by Dr Bob Winters 407-340-7785. Holly and Jeff wrap up the show briefly talking about The U.S Women's Open Championship won by In Gee Chung.  PODCAST NOTE: Listeners can tune in to iHeart Radio 740 The Game Wednesdays from 6-7 p.m. to hear The Golf Insiders live. Add The Golf Insiders podcast to your iPhone as an app. Click here and go to the bottom of the device's screen to create the "Quick Launch" icon for the Golf Insiders. Now the course resembles the original design by Donald Ross. From what Bob has heard, the players like the course and know that it is tough. The rough might resemble a barren wasteland and the fairways might be a little brown.  Holly talks to Bob about Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson's chances and how their games suit this course. The two also talk about some of the European players and how their game fits this course? Adam Scott, Rory McIlroy,  Jason Day, Sergio Garcia, etc. Bob also talks about the fact that we just might see a person at the top of the leader board that we normally don't see. Players will miss a lot of the greens, more than normal, and they will need to get up and down a lot more than typical in a tournament.  Jeff Rude, Senior Writer for Golfweek, calls in from Pinehurst and talks to Holly about the players and how much they are thinking or about their game with the redesign and the fact that this is the second longest U.S. Open golf course. Jeff also mentions that there won't be many birdie opportunities at Pinehurst this week and that it will take a creative shot maker as well as a great short game player to win. There's a lot of chance involved on this course, more than most and that is why it is hard to pick a winner. Jeff brings up the fact that Payne Stewart and Michael Campbell hit a total of 41 fairways in four days that they played and went on to win the U.S. Open. Jeff feels Sergio Garcia has a good chance to win. Mike Kern, Philadelphia Daily News, joins the show and talks to Holly and Rich about Rory McIlroy and his approach to golf lately without his former fiancee. Mike also talks about the conditions of the course and the weather. Pinehurst is all about the greens and playing them, being able to get up and down. His picks are Furyk, Sergio and Brendon Todd.  Scott McPherson, President of Antigua, calls into the show and talks to Holly and Rich about gifts for Father's Day and apparel. Scott, in the business for 35 years, talks with Holly about how apparel has changed over the years. Synthetics have dominated for the past decade or so, but Antigua is introducing some cotton blends this year. LPGA Stacy Lewis who recently won the Shoprite LPGA Classic is part of Team Antigua.

Holly gives a shout out to Inbee Park who won the Wegman's LPGA Championship defeating Catriona Matthew on the third hole of a sudden death playoff. It was Park's seventh career victory and third major championship title. Harry English posted his first win of his PGA Tour victory at the FedEx St. Jude Classic holding off a strong finish by Phil Mickleson and Scott Stallings as the Tour sets up for the U.S. Open. Todd Lewis, the Golf Channel, calls in from Merion to talk about his interview with Lee Westwood as well as the weather and the shape of the golf course after all the rain. Close to 6 inches of rain has fallen on the course in less than a week. Todd also talks about the expectations of low numbers on the score at Merion. Holly and Todd talk about Phil Mickelson's whirlwind trip back and forth to the West Coast. Wednesday Phil flew out to attend his daughter's 8th grade graduation and then is supposed to arrive in the Philadelphia area around 4:15 in the morning and tee off a few hours later for his first round of the 113th U.S. Open. Todd is not sure if Phil is giving himself the best opportunity to win the major he so desperately wants. Todd and Holly also discuss the focused mindset of Webb Simpson and the chances of Pennsylvania native Jim Furyk. Todd feels that Rory McIlroy is not in the right spot with his game to win this major. Todd feels that Rory's switch of 14 clubs in his bag when he signed with Nike. Todd feels that it takes any player a while to adjust to any equipment changes they make and feels that it could take Rory until the final major of the season before he is completely dialed in with his new clubs. Philadelphia Daily News' Mike Kern, calls in from the press area in Merion to talk about the weather on the eve of the U.S. Open. Mike has written a series of article about Merion hosting the U.S. Open. "The thing about Merion is that the rough is always tough and needs to be that way since the course is short."  Mike said that the rough is akin to rough on the Tour about 10-15 years ago. Tony Leodora, Golfstyles Magazine and host of Golf Talk Live, calls in to wrap up the show. Tony and Holly talk about Ben Hogan's famed 1-ron shot at Merion. Tony said that he favors the older players to do well at Merion because of their patience and experience. Those two elements are really the key to winning the 113th U.S. Open.

That makes 3 tartan jackets for Boo, who is from Florida's panhandle near Milton. Holly sat down with Frank Thomas at Reunion Golf Course recently to talk about the anchoring ruling by the USGA. Frank spent 26 years working for the USGA. One of his jobs was helping to write equipment rules for the USGA. He now runs The Putting Pad at Reunion GC. He was also the individual who introduced the graphite golf shaft to the industry. "The Anchoring Rule ... is a very complex rule and it tries to tell people how they should hold the club, which is the first time we've done that in the history of the game. I think it is going to be cumbersome and difficult to interpret and difficult to monitor. However the USGA believes that they can rely on the integrity of the individual and his intentions to get this rule working effectively," Thomas said. Thomas feels that anchoring doesn't improve the putting of some of the best players in the world. It does help improve the performance of some of the bad putters and the long putter is very much more efficient than the belly putter. However, we need to recognize that the best putters in the world are not anchoring. He said that about 40 percent of your score is from putting and about 45 percent of the game is spent on the putting green. Frank teaches proper putting and has designed his own putter. "We don't really understand putting very well and it hasn't been and not been teaching teachers how to teach the systematic and structured approach to putting," he said. "When you start using the long putter you start losing feel." Following is an excerpt from the PGA's statement on the USGA's decision. Although we do not agree with the decision, we applaud the USGA for its willingness to listen to our concerns and engage in meaningful discussions. In our opinion and based on our experience, the USGA treated the comment period for what it was intended to be -- a time to exchange opinions, concerns and potential solutions.
