On this episode, I'm joined by Golf Course Design Hall of Famer Rees Jones plus 3 of the Top Instructors in our game Dr. Alison Curdt, Cindy Miller, and Dave Stockton Jr. Rees Jones is one of the all-time great course designers. Son of Robert Trent Jones, and brother to Robert Trent Jones, Jr., Rees carved out his own Hall of Fame career. We hear about the second course he's working on with Bill Bergin up at McLemore called The Outpost. Rees says it's major championship worthy. We also talk about some of his other great designs like Haig Point, Victory Ranch, Lake Isles, Echelon Golf Club, and Brian Harman's home course, Southbridge Golf Club in Savannah. Rees also takes us through how the picks out the plot of land he wants to use for new courses, the process he uses to determine the path of the course, and how he keeps both the skill level of the membership and average golfers in mind as he lays out the course. Dr. Alison Curdt earned her doctorate in Sports Psychology. She is one of only a few Instructors who have reached Master Professional status on both the LPGA and PGA sides of Instruction. We talk about getting past the ingrained bad feeling we get every time we play that one hole that always seems to ruin our rounds. We also discuss getting away from all the negative self-talk we do plus tips for shifting our weight, getting out of a greenside bunker, and stabilizing our wrists during our putting stroke. Cindy Miller was the 2010 LPGA National Teacher of the Year. She is also an expert in improving our mental game. We hear about her alter ego Cynthia and how to quiet her negative voice. We also learn that Brian Harman used to wrestle alligators, plus get a tip for how to make consistent, clean contact. Dave Stockton Jr. shares his thoughts on the PIF/PGA Tour merger and Jay Monahan's future. Dave was an Assistant Captain when his father captained the US team in 1991. He shares his insights on what that was like and who he thinks should be on this year's team. He also says I'm not imagining things when I'm seeing Tour pros striking their putts on the upswing or follow through versus the center of the putter face.

Olin also talked about what it's like to be playing in a Champion's Tour tournament while his son is simultaneously trying to qualify for the Web.com Tour. I asked him if it's more stressful for him playing in the tournament or wondering how his son is doing. I also asked Olin if his strategy is different now playing in the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs than it is playing in a regular Tour tournament because the field gets narrowed down every week during the playoffs. Dave, who just turned 50 on July 31st, talked about playing in his first Champions Tour event at the 3M Championship and his plans for 2019 out on the Champions Tour. Also the U.S. Open Qualifier was at Timacuan for the fourth time in five years. Sean Gorgone, The Whole Game of Golf, calls in to talk about qualifying for the U.S. Open. He shot a 71 and finished in a playoff spot for an alternate spot.   Bob Harig, ESPN.com, calls in from the press center at The Players Championship. Bob says that the PGA is almost assured of getting a new #1 in OWGR this week at The Players. If Adam Scott, Bubba Watson, Henrik Stenson or Matt Kuchar play well enough this week they could take over the top spot from Tiger Woods who is currently rehabbing his back.  Holly and Bob talk about JB Holmes win at the Wells Fargo last week and everything that he's been through over the past few years.  Brain surgery, injuring himself roller blading, elbow surgery etc. Bob's pick to win this week is Matt Kuchar. Todd Lewis, The Golf Channel, calls in and talks to Holly and Rich about The Players. Holly asks about Bubba Watson and other PGA starts like Jordan Spieth. Todd talks about Jordan's drive, emotion, etc. Todd and Holly discuss Adam Scott. He's never been #1 in the World both times, Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Masters, he was in contention he didn't play well. It's been a conscious distraction. Holly asks about all the first timers at The Players this year and their chances as well as recent winner Lee Westwood. Todd finishes up talking about Phil Mickelson's adjustment to his putter grip with the help of Dave Stockton.  Steve DiMeglio, USA Today, calls in for the first time on The Golf Insiders to talk to Holly about from The Players. For years at the Wednesday competition of The Players Championship, each player contributed to a prize fund, with some of the money going to charity and the rest going to the caddie who ended up closest to the pin. "This year, the competition honors the late Bruce Edwards, who Jim 'Bones' Mackay said was "the Arnold Palmer of caddies." Edwards, the longtime friend and caddie for Tom Watson, passed away in 2004 from ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). On the 10th anniversary of his death, the PGA Tour will match all donations on the 17th, with all the money going to the Bruce Edwards Foundation." Steve feels that Matt Kuchar is hot coming into the tournament and also feels that Jordan Spieth and Sergio Garcia have a good chance at winning this event. Steve also stresses that all could miss the cut because the course has you on your toes every single round. "It's hard to get a rhythm for four days." Garry Smits, Florida Times Union, calls in to give listeners the conditions of the course. The greens on 4, 9, 11, 12 and 13 were over chemically treated. Nos. 4, 11 and 12 the players were not allowed to practice on them prior to the Wed event. Some were re-sodded and plugged. Garry says the greens are really soft because they've been watering them a lot.

430-431: Dave Stockton has won 5 Majors on the PGA and Champions Tour. He was also the winning Captain of the 1991 Ryder Cup team. He's one of the Pro Tour’s hottest coaches working with Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickleson and Annika Sorenstam. Dave's got amazing experience and insights, but doesn't focus on golf mechanics. How you use your mind during a round is his forte, and we discuss specifics on pre-shot routine, and strategy to become a MUCH better player. All three of Dave Stockton's books are available in the book section of our Golfers'Mart. This is the complete interview. Instead of breaking it into 2 episodes, I'm experimenting with providing Members with the full show all at once. This means that there will not be a Members Only episode next week. If you'd prefer new content each week and like hearing interviews in 2 parts, then we'll continue. Please provide your feedback on this format.Again, there will not be a Members Only episode next week.

During his 39 years in professional golf, Jim Hardy has sought out experiences and opportunities that span the golf profession. Jim passed the PGA Tour Q-School in 1968 and played the Tour full time until March 1974. Hardy's second book, "The Plane Truth for Golfers Master Class" is focused more on the art, or the "how to", of the key swing elements of the two swing types.Among his students have been Frank Beard, Dave Stockton, Carol Mann, Donna Caponi, Hollis Stacy, Brad Faxon and Mark O’Meara. He currently teaches PGA Tour professionals Peter Jacobsen, Scott McCarron, Tom Pernice, Bob Tway, Olin Browne, Duffy Waldorf, Jay Delsing, Stan Utley, Don Pooley and Graham Marsh. Even on the PGA Tour, the swings of the best ball strikers all have different shapes and styles -- from the classic actions of Tiger Woods and Ernie Els, to the unusual moves of Jim Furyk, John Daly, and Sergio Garcia. But there is one thing these great players all do have in common. The essence of good ball striking is proper use of the club through the impact zone. It's what Tiger, Ernie, Jim, John and Sergio all do exactly alike. And you can learn to do it, too. www.ajgolf.comAvila Beach Golf Resort - www.avilabeachresort.com Blacklake Golf Resort - www.blacklake.comInn at Avila Beach - www.avilabeachca.comAvila LaFonda Hotel - www.avilalafondahotel.comGolfland Warehouse - www.golflandwarehouse.comSlickstix - www.slickstix.comFor more information on Golf Talk Radio with Mike & Billy visit www.golftalkradio.com and visit www.centralcoasttoday.com for Golf Talk TV with Mike & Billy.
