In episode 29, Andy and Mon-Chaio explored Grint's taxonomy of tame, critical, and wicked problems and how different problem categories required different leadership tactics. However, Grint had a lot more to say about the tactics necessary to adequately address wicked problems. In this episode, our hosts delve deeper into Grint's paper and introduce his concept of elegant and clumsy solutions. They discuss how the two solutions differ, what role uncertainty plays in dealing with wicked problems, and how egalitarian practices of empathy and community of fate are necessary to truly address the most challenging problems engineering organizations face. Welcome to the first installment of the “Journey to Scratch” series of The Scratch Golfer's Mindset Podcast. Rather than trying to cram valuable coaching and education alongside updates on my own journey to scratch into a single episode, I believe you'll get more value if I separate the two entirely. In today's episode, I'll recap my first four officially logged rounds (I use the Grint to log my rounds - connect with me: pauljsalter07), discuss my thoughts on mulligans, breakfast balls, and a two-ball scramble (you may disagree with me), as well as update you on what I'm trying to achieve by November 13, 2024… Start listening. P.S. I'm conducting research to better understand how I can provide the content and education you need to shoot more pars than bogeys.

Truth in Learning: in Search of Something! Anything!! Anybody?
In this episode, podcast host, Matt Richter is joined by Nigel Paine, organizational learning and leadership expert. Together, they spend the whole episode exploring that nebulous and vague concept of leadership. They fail to definitively lock in a definition for leadership— thus demonstrating one of the inherent challenges organizations face when leveraging LD programs. But, more importantly, they look at what we can do, when we effectively develop leaders within organizational contexts. Leaders are all about managing… managing the context. No one style, approach, model, theory, or consultant prescription will work in all scenarios… of at all. So, what is one to do? Focus on flexibly adapting and managing that aforementioned context. Recognize that that there are so many different perspectives— the leaders, the followers, other players, etc. And then find ways to accept and leverage those different perspectives. In other words, leadership is utterly founded on adaptation and change. It is about systems thinking. To paraphrase Keith Grint, leadership is all about working to solve those wicked problems we face.Nigel answers the question about how we can predict or forecast whether someone will be a good leader. Which then leads to a discussion of how we conceive of leadership in our culture and how we describe leadership success.Below are some references and notes from the show:We referenced both Barbara Kellerman and Jeffrey Pfeffer:Kellerman, B. In his arm is a chubby child he's rescued, who is destined to become a leader. Kardak is not just a hero. He's a warrior. This image is captured in a film that, in the real world, features Steve, an actor who plays Kradak in a series of B-films. Unfortunately, the film attracts the wrong kind of viewer when Rista and Grint come through a portal from Arkana, view the film portrait of this hero's exploits, and decide that Steve is just the person to save their world. It isn't until they kidnap him and bring him to Arkana, the portal closed behind them, that they discover that Steve is anything but a hero.

What is sound design? This is the question Miranda Eastwood, current Sound Designer of The SpokenWeb Podcast, is looking to find out. Exploring soundscapes of all shapes and forms, Miranda draws from interviews with friends, colleagues, and academics, as well as Caroline Levine's Forms: Whole, Rhythm, Hierarchy, Network to tackle this particularly tangled question. From sonic literature to audio walks, podcasting to music, this episode is a deep dive into what it means to “sound out” any and all audio texts, and the affective power afforded to sound as a medium of art and communication. Go Go Go!
Expect Christmas chaos in this year's festive short story from Jodi Taylor, set in the world of the Time Police for the first time. It all begins when the Time Police hold their first Children's Christmas Party. Their most dangerous mission yet . . . No good deed ever goes unpunished. Lt Grint succumbs to his softer side and soon lives to regret it. The combination of bubble universes, candy floss, a small boy, a toad named Mr Fluffy, Mount Fanboten, £6.5 million, and a love-struck Officer Lockland are all hard enough to believe, but imagine a situation so dire that only Officer Parrish can save the aforementioned Grint from a lengthy stay in prison. At least, he can - but will he? And, most unlikely of all, has Commander Hay's long-suffering adjutant finally experienced the first faint stirrings of romance? Is such a thing even possible?

At least, he can - but will he? And, most unlikely of all, has Commander Hay's long-suffering adjutant finally experienced the first faint stirrings of romance? Is such a thing even possible?

Rupert Grint was unsure who he was as an actor and artist after the seven-film “Harry Potter” series came to an end. “I started realizing that somewhere along the line there was a huge sacrifice I'd made. I'd lost something,” he says. Then he remembered a piece of advice from fellow “Potter” alum, the late, great Alan Rickman: Go and do theater. “I think it's really important, when you've been from where I'd come from—this huge machine that started to define me—to feel the fear [of theater],” Grint says. “I felt very human again.” In this episode of “In the Envelope: The Actor's Podcast,” Grint walks us through the twists and turns of his magical, unlikely career—from the marathon auditions that landed him his “Harry Potter” role, to the uncertainty of his post-franchise life, to the artistic resurgence that led him to M. Night Shyamalan's eerie Apple TV+ drama, “Servant.” Check out the episode, and watch all episodes of M. Playing Together at The Divide We review the round hole by hole. This is a course that we've both probably played the most in the Charlotte area. Teed off on a Sunday morning, didn't get paired up, weather was perfect, and the course felt empty. What more could you ask for? Life is good...for awhile. We know the course well, but did that help pay off? OB Penalty Mishap We mistakenly said that OB is a one stroke penalty, and we wanted to clear up stroke & distance. Checkout the rule change from the USGA and if you're curious. Net Double Bogey & ESC Net double bogey and equitable stroke control can help limit your score and/or handicap so be sure to enter your scores accurately. A lot of times if you use a service like the The Grint or another handicap service and enter your scores hole by hole they will make this adjustment for you. Visualization & Positive Mental Attitude/Mental Toughness Do you visualize shots? Have you heard of Vision54? Either way you have to have a positive mental attitude. We're playing golf on a beautiful day, why do we let the littlest thing bother us? If we want our handicaps to come down we're going to have to be tougher mentally. 3 Putt Bogey's Is there anything worse than a 3 putt bogey? It's time to get serious about putting and actually go practice it. Here's a look at average putts per round per handicap. Smart Golf Syndrome Do you ever hit a 5 iron off the tee instead of driver and then shank it OB anyway? Ever try to lay up on a hole and hit it to far into the creek you were laying up to avoid? Yeah, that's smart golf syndrome (SGS). When you make the right decision, but the results don't pay off. One of the easiest ways for high handicappers to to immediately lower their scores is avoiding SGS. *FYI - the image on this blog post is NOT the Divide :) It was just a free image and it's nice.
