In the second part of our conversation, Lynn Marriott and Pia Nilsson of VISION54 discuss the intricate dance of tempo, tension, and balance in golf, and share insights on how the right mental and emotional tools can transform your game. Our guests share their own experiences navigating these three elements while out on the green, offering a relatable glimpse into the high-stakes world of competitive golf. “You can have a great golf swing,” Lynn says, “but tension ruins it.” Mastering your swing's tempo and managing tension doesn't just come down to practice at the range; it's also about the stories we tell ourselves on the course. We share practical strategies to enhance your golf performance, from intentional breathing to slow-motion practice. But it's not all about the physical; the mental game plays a pivotal role. Learn how emotional resilience, positive affirmations and realistic self-talk can create a narrative that propels you towards excellence, and discover how to remain fully present, giving you that competitive edge. Tori sits down with VISION54 co-founders Lynn Marriott and Pia Nilsson. They are internationally recognized and are the two highest ranked female instructors in America. The pair co-authored four bestselling books, including Every Shot Must Have a Purpose, which we dive into today. Listen in as Lynn and Marriott discuss the philosophy behind VISION54 before diving into four powerful principles for playing better golf: 1) Think small, play big. 2) Anger makes us stupid. 3) Make practice real. 4) Make pressure your friend. Key Takeaways ● (5:19) “54” is a mindset and a process. Shooting 54 (trying to birdie every single hole in an 18-hole round) is a dream for any player. VISION54 comes down to keeping a mind open to possibilities. Professional golfers are distinguished primarily by a greater awareness of their strengths and gaps. ● (14:12) Think small, play big. “Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” Allow yourself to have big and compelling dreams. However, seeing those goals through to fruition starts with the tiniest, seemingly insignificant step. Know the factors that are in your control and those out of your control. ● (21:42) Anger makes us stupid. Especially heightened emotions, anger included, blind us to perspective and coordination. During those all-too-familiar down moments in a game, the best thing to do is to let the negative emotions pass before making your next decision. Get the tension out of your body by sprinting to the next tee or doing a few jumping jacks. Celebrate all your good shots to raise your positivity all the while. In fact, emotionalizing your outcomes is one thing you can control on the course. ● (28:18) Make practice real. “There is a big foundational mismatch,” says Pia, “between range culture and the golf course.” Many golfers tend to train the same movements using the same clubs in the same environment, committing them to muscle memory. But the reality is that golf is a game of variables, and no two games will ever require the exact same strategy. Make sure to do all three primary forms of practice regularly: maintenance practice, performance practice, and future practice. ● (40:27) Make pressure your friend. Downplaying the intensity of the game might not actually be the best strategy. Instead, lean into the pressure, arousal, and adrenaline, if only to be incentivized to stay creative and on your toes. Ben and Kent chat with Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott, founders of Vision54 and coaches of four world No. 1's and nine major champions, about their coaching philosophy, watching student Annika Sorenstam make her return earlier this season. They explain the three keys to their approach, the think box/play box/memory box, and how the technical and human skills mesh together to form into a golfer. Pia and Lynn then chat about the lessons players learn before winning for the first time and what it's like to climb the mountain into being the world's No. 1 player for the first time versus trying to ascend again. They finish by discussing block practice versus simulation practice and how the pandemic has changed their coaching regimen.

Their book "Be a Player" is a great guide towards gaining confidence on the golf course. Soly chats with Pia and Lynn about the concepts in the book, and there's plenty of information here that will help you play better golf. Thanks a ton to both Pia and Lynn for the time.

Today we are joined by one of the most forward thinking coaches in the UK Oli Morton. Oli is based up at the wonderful Archerfield Links where I have spent many happy days myself. We discuss his own evolution as a golf coach and his developing interest in the holistic approach to the game. Oli has been heavily influenced by Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriot at Vision 54 and his own sense of what could be possible in the future shines through his approach to coaching. Oli uses the GEARS system up at Archerfield which is state of the art analysis of how your body is moving during the golf swing. If you get the chance to go to Archerfield then visiting Oli is a MUST Are you trying to make moves in your swing that your body just cannot support? Are you really aware of your own movement patterns? What are some of the most ineffective movement patterns that will hold back your game? Where do you need to have your attention in your swing to get the best out of your practice time? Is it better to make changes in your game with an IMPLICIT approach? In effect you get change without trying to consciously make changes Why Oli believes that we should not have swing ‘thoughts’ but swing ‘feels’ The need to get out on the golf course to train effectively What does a really good training session look like? What are the future developments for a great coach to embrace? We had a really wide ranging and fun chat and I am sure you will really benefit from spending this quality time with Oli For more details of Oli Morton and the programmes he offers go to www.archerfieldgolfclub.com He is on Twitter @changethegame54 Have you got YOUR Breakthrough Program yet?
