He emphasizes that as followers of Jesus, we are called to actively love and serve others, not just in occasional projects, but in our daily lives. Pastor Josh warns against self-centeredness, urging the congregation to actively fight against it, and shares the story of Dave Simpson as an example of how small acts of obedience can grow into something impactful. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for Oct 31st Publish Date: Oct 30th Commercial: Henssler :15 From the Henssler Financial Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Tuesday, October 31st and Happy heavenly Birthday to actor John Candy. ***UNCLE BUCK – PRINCIPAL MOLLEY*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia Marietta Man Acquitted of Rape Charge Hundreds of Books Removed from Cobb School Libraries Since Early August, Records Show Suspect in mass shooting found dead, drawing 'sigh of relief' in Maine All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Marietta Man Acquitted of Rape Charge A man who had been incarcerated for nearly four years was acquitted of a rape charge from a June 2017 allegation in Cobb County, Georgia. A jury returned a verdict of not guilty in the case of Jorge Candido Martines. Martines was accused of rape by a 17-year-old girl, but her testimony fell apart under further questioning. The accuser's story changed significantly just 72 hours before the trial, when she claimed that Martines had used a knife during the assault, which was a stark contrast to her original account. The change in her story, combined with the timing, damaged her credibility, leading to the acquittal. STORY 2: Hundreds of Books Removed from Cobb School Libraries Since Early August, Records Show Hundreds of books have been removed from high school libraries in the Cobb County School District in Georgia since the start of the school year. Lists of books removed from libraries, obtained through an Open Records Act request, show variations between schools. Some books considered controversial and contested were removed, including those deemed sexually explicit. Several books related to gender, sexuality, race, and censorship were also removed. High-profile book removals in Cobb and other school districts have come amid cultural and political battles. Some argue for the inclusion of certain books, while others push for their removal. This issue reflects a broader cultural war in the United States. Jeff Hubbard, president of the Cobb County Association of Educators, suggests that greater transparency is needed regarding book removals. The Cobb County School District has not provided reasons for removing specific books. STORY 3: Suspect in mass shooting found dead, drawing 'sigh of relief' in Maine A mass shooting in Maine that left 18 people dead has come to an end as the suspect, Robert Card, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The shooting took place in a bowling alley and bar-restaurant, making it the deadliest mass shooting in the US this year. The victims ranged in age from a 14-year-old boy to a husband and wife in their 70s. Authorities had launched a massive manhunt for Card, who was described as "armed and dangerous." The shooting had brought fear to southern Maine, but with Card's death, the community can begin to heal. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: ESOG – ELON – THE MARKET STORY 4: ARC Survey: Economy and Crime Top Issues Facing Metro ATL, Cobb Residents Say According to the Atlanta Regional Commission's 2023 Metro Atlanta Speaks Survey, Cobb County residents identify the economy and crime as the two most pressing issues facing metro Atlanta. Similar findings were reported for the broader Atlanta region. In Cobb County, 30% of respondents considered the economy the most pressing issue, while 28% cited crime. Crime ranked first for the 11-county region (27%), followed by the economy (24%). Despite crime being a concern for Cobb residents, 47% of them said they feel safe walking at night in their neighborhood. The survey also revealed insights into residents' views on electric vehicles, climate change, and artificial intelligence. STORY 5: McCormick: Georgia Can Draw New Congressional Map and Protect Incumbents U.S. Rep. Rich McCormick, a Republican representing northeast Cobb County, has expressed that the court-ordered redrawing of Georgia's congressional map may not necessarily result in additional Democratic members of Congress. This comes after a federal judge rejected Georgia's previous congressional and state legislative redistricting maps, siding with civil rights and voting rights groups' claims that the maps violated the Voting Rights Act. The judge ordered the General Assembly to draw new maps to comply with the law and provide equal opportunity for Black Georgians to participate in the political process. McCormick believes it's possible to create four minority districts while maintaining a 9-5 Republican-Democrat congressional split. He is also concerned about the judge's specific instructions regarding a majority-Black district in "west-metro Atlanta" and fears that it might lead to the rejection of the legislature's new map. Despite the challenges, McCormick is prepared to defend his seat in a competitive general election. We'll be back in a moment Break: DAYCO – DRAKE – POWERS STORY 6: Residents Curious About Timeline for Cobb Transit Tax The Cobb Department of Transportation is in the planning stages of a Mobility Special-Purpose Local-Option Sales Tax (M-SPLOST) for a 2024 transit tax referendum. Residents have provided feedback on the proposal. There are two plans being considered, one for a 30-year 1% sales tax, and the other for a 10-year version. The 30-year plan aims to collect $10.9 billion, with the focus on expanding the transit system in the first decade, and then maintaining it and paying off debt in the following 20 years. The 10-year plan would collect $2.8 billion and create a more modest transit program within that period. Attendees at an open house expressed interest in high-capacity transit and microtransit expansion, as well as prioritizing options for senior populations. Cobb Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Lisa Cupid supports the 30-year tax. Residents are offering feedback and emphasizing the importance of clear objectives for the transit tax proposal. STORY 7: Costumed canines converge in Kennesaw contest Nova, a bumblebee-clad dog accompanied by the Marie family in matching insect-themed costumes, claimed first place in the Smith-Gilbert Gardens' Doggie Day Halloween Parade. Around a dozen families participated in the parade, with dogs dressed in various creative costumes. The event aimed to provide local dog owners with an enjoyable way to explore the botanical gardens, extending accessibility to the community. The gardens' new executive director, Dave Simpson, expressed enthusiasm for continuing and expanding such events to make the gardens a welcoming space for dogs and their owners. The pollinator theme of Nova and the Marie family may have contributed to their victory, given the gardens' focus on promoting pollinator activity. Fifth generation, or 5G technology, promises to bring high-speed, low-latency wireless infrastructure necessary for the smart era. But moving from the promise of 5G to a reality where 5G networks will deliver amazing and important new capabilities and services will require those networks to be secure. To talk about 5G cybersecurity challenges, Lawfare senior editor Stephanie Pell sat down with Tom Wheeler, visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution and former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (or FCC), and Admiral (ret.) David Simpson, professor at Virginia Tech and former chief of the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau at the FCC. They just published a new paper entitled, “5G is Smart, Now Let's Make it Secure.” They talked about the 5G cyber paradox, three specific cybersecurity challenges they outline in the paper, and recommendations they make for addressing these cybersecurity challenges going forward.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. The Sex Pistols initiated punk in the U.K., but their music and influence are often overlooked. Journalist and author, Dave Simpson, puts it best when he says that they were no ordinary group.I Wanna Be Me is an extraordinary tale of no ordinary band. It's a definitive history of the Sex Pistols, looks somewhat like a fanzine, and contains over 150 photos. Their legacy is immense, as Dave will tell in this podcast, the stories of so many other artists and bands who were directly influenced by them - live, even they they 'couldn't play'. This is the story of the true Punk band, entertaining, shocking, and anarchic - it's almost more shocking to reflect on how they were treated by the establishment and media during the two years and a half years of the height of their fame.Buy the book here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sex-Pistols-Wanna-Be-Me/dp/1786751240/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1EXQB8IETO48Q&keywords=dave+simpson+sex+pistols&qid=1669792253&sprefix=dave+simoson%2Caps%2C196&sr=8-1Connect with me on Instagram; steve.blameAnd thanks to POP; The History Makers insanely wonderful talent booker: #ArchieCMichaelSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/pop-the-history-makers-with-steve-blame/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Hosted on Acast. Each year, a third of all HBA2 students get to hear Dave Simpson's Top Ten, a collection of personal business stories that speak to how even the best laid plans can come apart through foreseen circumstances. As the coronavirus continues to impact businesses across the globe, many of Dave's former students have reconnected to share their frustrations of opportunities lost, and how they have been reminded of one of the stories from Dave's Top Ten, The Hundred Year Flood. In this episode, Ivey alum, lecturer and serial entrepreneur Dave Simpson, MBA '89 shares the story of The Hundred Year Flood, hoping to remind entrepreneurs the importance of staying calm and carrying on, because entrepreneurs more than anyone understand that existential crises happen all the time.
As university and college tuition rates in Canada increase every year, questions of affordability are becoming more pertinent. Changes to OSAP and student funding are hitting students harder than ever before, yet having an undergraduate degree (and even a master's degree) remains the prerequisite for most well-paying jobs. On this week’s episode of Beyond the Headlines, we unpack the question on everyone’s mind: “Is post-secondary education accessible in Canada?” We investigate the sociocultural and economic barriers which prevent students from attending university and college, and which prevent parents from saving for their children’s education in the first place. We also look at the policies and programs which can make higher education more accessible in the long-run. Joining us in the conversation to provide their insights and perspectives are guests Luke Connell, André Côté and Andrew Parkin.Luke Connell is a leader in the field of social innovation. He currently serves as the Executive Director of the nonprofit initiative SmartSAVER, based out of the Omega Foundation here in Toronto.Andrew Parkin is the Executive Director of the Environics Institute for Survey Research, a not-for-profit agency created in 2006 to promote relevant and original public opinion and social research on important issues of public policy and social change.André Côté is the Principal Consultant at Côté and Company Strategies and an alumnus of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. Spreckels Theatre Company opens their season with The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Simon Stephens’ adaptation of Mark Haddon’s 2003 novel about a boy with ‘behavioral difficulties’ took England and Broadway by storm and earned multiple awards on both continents. Christopher (Elijah Pinkham) is a 15-year-old boy with an unspecified cognitive condition (that some read as autism or Asperger’s) living with his father in Swindon, England. He discovers a neighbor’s dog has been killed and, to his father’s consternation, decides to undertake an investigation. That investigation leads to another mystery culminating in a journey of self-discovery and affirmation. Director Elizabeth Craven gets outstanding performances from her cast. Pinkham completely inhabits the incredibly difficult lead role. David L. Yen as Chris’s father and Bronwen Shears as a woman in their lives are also superlative and there’s a “who’s who” of quality North Bay performers filling out the ensemble. Excellent technical elements (set design, lighting design, sound, and projections) effectively transport you inside Christopher’s oft-confused mind but occasionally overwhelm the story. Performance and presentation combine to make The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time unlike anything previously produced in this area. ’The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’ runs through September 30 at Spreckels Performing Arts Center in Rohnert Park. Thursday performances are at 7pm; Friday and Saturday’s are at 8pm; and there’s a Sunday matinee at 2pm. For more information, go to spreckelsonline.com If you’re going to see only one ‘five British women of varying ages, socio-economic statuses and body types bonding over pole dancing’ play in your lifetime, might as well make it Dave Simpson’s The Naked Truth. A big hit in England, director Argo Thompson imports it to the North Bay for its U.S. premiere at Left Edge Theatre. Its story of five disparate individuals brought together with the goal of putting on a charity show is hardly original and its characters are pretty stock (the shy one, the bawdy one, the snobby one, etc.), but its well-acted and the five performers (Angela Squire, Bonnie Jean Shelton, Katie Kelly, Annabel Pimentel, Serena Elize Flores) and their instructor (Heather Danielle) have definite chemistry. After your ears adjust to the accents, there’ll be two hours of laughs and tears as the ladies deal with self-image and relationship issues, sex talk, ill health, and betrayal. Will all conflicts be resolved in time to put on the big charity pole dance? How did you think the show would end? ‘The Naked Truth’ runs through September 30 at Left Edge Theatre in Santa Rosa. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8pm; the Sunday matinee is at 2pm. For more information, go to leftedgetheatre.com
Juliet talks to Owen Hatherley (author of 'Militant Modernism', 'A Guide to the New Ruins of Great Britain', 'Landscapes of Communism' and many other books) and David Stubbs (formerly of Melody Maker, and a writer on '1996 and the End of History' as well as Krautrock and electronic music) about the life and work of Mark E. Smith, who sadly died last month. They discuss The Fall in the context of post-industrial Manchester, the post-punk scene, a changing (and ever less intelligent) music press, modernist literature and pop culture, and think about the group's legacy. I've been in love with C&O's bar since first venturing down the stairs late one night many years ago. The vibe, the wood, you feel like you're someplace else. Someplace older. In Europe. The food is amazing, the service exemplary, and the atmosphere down to earth. Sometimes rare in fine dining. And something owner Dave Simpson wanted to preserve when he gave ownership to Chef Maupin years ago. What did that feel like? Why does Chef Maupin consider it a stewardship rather than ownership? How does the nurturing environment within C&O's walls help to foster new talent in the culinary industry? How did Chef Maupin get his start with an apprenticeship, something many young cooks bypass today in favor of culinary school? What was that like? We talk about it all including how the C&O helped foster development along The Downtown Mall and where The Mall is headed. Is Charlottesville a world-class tourist destination that could sustain a restaurant on par with Magnus Nilsson's Fäviken? Is there still room for tasting menus or is fast casual becoming the norm? I'm so glad I had the chance to talk with Dean and I know you'll love it. And folks, you have permission to stop into C&O in your jeans just for a few apps and a glass of wine so you don't break the bank. Chef Maupin has given you permission and I would guess a lot of other fine dining restaurants in the area would agree with him. So get out there! Don't save it for an anniversary or birthday. Make Tuesday night special. SHOW NOTES - Links to items discussed within the episode: Chef's Table - Magnus Nilsson's Fäviken - watch the trailer online!
