This episode of Sync Music Matters is an interview with Aaron May and David Ridley about scoring the Netflix series Adolescence and the power of collaboration Interview with Aaron May + David Ridley Aaron and David are the progressive composer duo responsible for scoring Netflix' recent psychological crime drama Adolescence  Other credits include ITVs Malpractice and the 4x BAFTA nominated feature Boiling Point. Composers Leo Birenberg & Zach Robinson join The Film Scorer Podcast to round out the unofficial (and accidental) trilogy of duo interviews (joining Meg Remy & Grace Glowicki and Aaron May & David Ridley). Leo and Zach are fresh off of scoring the sixth and final season of Cobra Kai as well as the first season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, so it's no surprise that we spend much of our conversation talking about those two scores (and Cobra Kai as a whole). In doing so, we cover things like the importance of putting their own stamp on a score (including making individual Cobra Kai fights seem unique and making their Spider-Man distinct from the many other entries), the daunting nature of creating a Spider-Man score in the wake of Daniel Pemberton's masterpieces, and the bittersweet nature of finishing Cobra Kai. For reference, of the two, Leo is the first to speak. Leo & Zach's scores are available on all major platforms, as are their other various other scores. There's also a compilation album of "greatest hits" from Cobra Kai seasons 4, 5, and 6 coming out later this year via Mutant. Cobra Kai is currently on Netflix while Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is on Disney+. You can find out more about Leo & Zach on their respective websites (Leo; Zach).

For my second of three consecutive duo interviews, I chat with composers Aaron May and David Ridley. While they've been composing together for a while, their biggest project is also their most recent - the viral Netflix series Adolescence, from director Philip Barantini and starring Stephen Graham. It's not surprise, then, that we spend a lot of our chat talking about the series, including working in the single take, real time format, understanding that the series might not need score at all, and the genesis of the child vocalization that forms an integral part of their score's palette. Dave has also scored all of Phil's projects, with Aaron also scoring all but the first two, so we discuss this long term director combination as well as how the two work together (and work separately). This is one of the more tangential conversations I've had - Aaron and Dave warned me beforehand that it might happen, but I certainly instigated it! I should have known it was coming when we lost track of time before recording talking about East Anglia and the British ritual/folk year. Shame that wasn't recorded too... Aaron and Dave's score is available on all major platforms, as are their other scores and their debut solo albums (each released in 2023). Adolescence is currently on Netflix, and there are rumors that a second season may come (though this would at least be a surprise to me). You can find out more about Aaron and Dave on their joint website.

The supplements market is on the rise, with products like vitamins, herbal drinks, and protein powders found in more household cupboards than ever before. The increasing popularity of supplements has coincided with the rise of wellness culture and increasing interest in preventative healthcare, spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, the market was declining before emergence of the coronavirus reignited global sales. Supplements can be an excellent way to cover deficiencies not addressed by food intake, but the wide range of products available in health food shops, pharmacies and supermarkets can be overwhelming for consumers. And while market growth is expected to continue, products such as herbal supplements and CBD continue to face regulatory issues and scrutiny over the soundness of their health claims. To discuss the latest trends in the supplements space, we're joined this month by David Ridley, Senior Editor at HBW Insight and host of Over the Counter podcast. He tells us which products surged in popularity during the pandemic, discusses the rise of self-care, and gives an overview of the regulatory environment in Europe.

The Basic Fear for the enneagram personality style 7 is to be restricted by boredom and the mundaneness of life, or feel trapped in negative emotional states with no options to move. Believe it or not this impingement of their freedom causes something like terror at deep levels in a type 7 personality, and when not aware at a conscious level they will do or try almost anything to remain up, moving and happy, in order to avoid that emotional state. When that dynamic is allowed to play out long enough the 7's natural attraction to ‘more' of anything can lead to deep addiction - whether to substances, behaviors or both. That story actually played out in the life of David Ridley, former jet-set fashion model, Bass Pro fisherman, subject of one of the most popular episodes of the HGTV/Magnolia mega-hit, Fixer-Upper, and enneagram-type 7. Join us on today's episode as David candidly shares his story of how the unconscious search for more-and-more happiness - played out in the over-the-top world of international fashion modeling - resulted in increasing levels of alcohol and other substance consumption, inappropriate relationships, and a spiral downward to the brink of suicide. Be sure to hang in for the rest of the story (so far!) and the spiritual intervention that changed David's life forever.

(TSAP S03E16) Sam caught up with composing duo Aaron May and David Ridley, where they chat about how they met, their musical origins, their recent work on VILLIAN and so much more! "Aaron May and David Ridley are award-winning composers who collaborate on music for film. As a duo, they create bold, unique music, with a contemporary-classical and electronic edge. They throw together their contrasting skill sets to develop rich soundscapes and evocative melodies. Their collaborative approach brings an openness to the process of writing for film, and a distinct sound-world for each new project. After scoring several short films, they will make their feature-length debut in 2020 with the score for Villain, a film by Philip Barantini. With a background in contemporary classical and electroacoustic music, Aaron enjoys working with both music and sound design, and his compositions often blur the lines between the two mediums. He has composed music and sound for broadcasters including CBBC and BBC Radio 4, and has created multi-channel works for installations in spaces including The V&A, The Science Museum and The Museum of London. He was awarded Best Sound Design: Television Series (Music + Sound Awards 2016) for his work on Messy Goes to Okido (CBBC). As a multi-instrumentalist, David specialises in piano, violin, viola, and voice and has been involved with orchestras throughout his life. He has scored over twenty plays and directed music for theatres including the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 2014, he was awarded the MTN Award for Innovation for his experimental electronic score for Lorraine & Alan, which he developed with his theatre company, Bucket Club. Using cutting-edge technology, which captures not only the acoustics of the melodic cave, but its awe-inspiring visual scale and beauty, this Between the Ears takes you to a site of natural beauty that has inspired Felix Mendelssohn, Jules Verne, John Keats, August Strindberg and countless others. Featuring a rich cinematic sound experience, we follow the work of Dr Stuart Jeffrey from The Glasgow School of Art’s School of Simulation and Visualisation, and sound designer and composer, Aaron May, as they both – in their own ways - explore the remarkable Fingal's Cave. A few years ago, Stuart and a team of archaeologists from the National Trust for Scotland discovered Bronze Age remains close to the cave and near a 19th-century building that was used by early tourists as a shelter from the elements. We join Stuart on location as he continues the dig and unearths further evidence of a Bronze Age site, and we accompany him into the heart of the cave during different sea states. At certain times, the cave actually sounds musical, and this is the reason why local people named it the ‘musical cave’. Stuart explains that inside the cave there is a natural cognitive dissonance that can be very unsettling, indeed some visitors are left feeling on edge. This is because the resonant sounds of blowing and popping, together with booming waves; create a soundscape that does not match the movement of the waves. During the Romantic period, Fingal's Cave attracted much attention and inspired many musicians, artists and literary figures and poets. Felix Mendelssohn made it ashore in 1829 and was so moved by the unearthly sounds that fill the cave he created the remarkable Hebrides Overture in response. Jules Verne said, "the vast cavern with its mysterious, dark, weed-covered chambers and marvellous basaltic pillars produced upon me a most striking impression and was the origin of my book, Le Rayon Vert”. During the 19th-century era of romanticism and the sublime, the Germans were particularly enthralled by Fingal’s Cave. Not only did they visit, but quirky plays and stories were even set there (including Bride of the Isles about vampires living inside Fingal's Cave). The location’s rich mythology, including that of mermaids and giants, highlights the sublime aspect of the place. Stuart's wider research, a collaboration with Professor Sian Jones at the University of Stirling, is trying to fill in the gap between how the Romantics viewed it - a site of awe - and how we see it today. “We have become dull souls, seeing it only as a nature reserve,” he says. Stuart hopes to change that perception by investigating whether cutting-edge technology can capture a place’s very essence. And this is where composer Aaron May comes into this story. Whereas Stuart has spent many hours within the magnificent natural structure, Aaron has never set foot in Fingal’s Cave. But for this documentary he has created a new musical composition based upon his experience of entering a phenomenally exact virtual reality reconstruction, made by Stuart and his team at Glasgow School of Art. The VR version, features laser scans, photogrammetry and acoustic sound maps. You are able to tour the entire length of the cave and even hear how a piece of music would sound if played within it. A version of this virtual reality experience, complete with Aaron’s composition, will be made available for listeners to explore on their smart phones. And of course, Aaron’s remarkable and evocative soundtrack will feature in the radio documentary. Listeners will be able to access a version of the VR experience using their smart phones and a high-end version, running on an HTC Vive, will showcase at the Edinburgh Festivals in August 2019. For those unable to make the trip to Staffa, it’s the nearest you will get to experiencing the full majesty of the location. We posted lots of photos on the blog already and we'll talk more about this place in an off the beaten path report a little later in the podcast. But we've had a great week of traveling and have so enjoyed Texas. We spent the past weekend in Waco, Texas, a place well known to fans of the HGTV television show Fixer Upper as the home of Chip and Joanna Gaines, the stars of the show. It is unbelievable how the popularity of the show and Chip and Joanna's Magnolia branded businesses have transformed Waco.  They have a bakery, they renovated two old grain Silos and turned it into a design boutique and they just opened a restaurant… that has a 2 ½ hour wait to get in. 20,000 tourists a week come to Waco… Waco is the 2nd most searched zip code on realtor.com… David Ridley, who owned ne of the homes Chip and Joanna fixed up, runs a tour bus company. This was a really, really busy weekend in Waco. Chip and Joann had their Spring celebration and they say as many as 150,000 people came from all over the country. Every hotel and RV park was supposedly booked up for 80 miles around. We also had our expert tour guide… and we want to give a big shout to David Hunt, one of our Roadtreking followers. David lives in Waco and generously gave us a our past many of the homes featured over six seasons if the TV show. Besides that, we toured the Dr. Pepper Museum and the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame. And we had an informal meet-up on Saturday with a bunch of folks who fo0llow us who live in Texas. You'll hear from some of them in a few minutes in our interview if the week segment on the podcast. We love hearing from our listeners. In fact, if you heard last week's episode, Dan Izzard, who lives in Georgetown, Texas, called in with a suggested route we travel to see bluebonnets. And That led us to the beautiful spot we are now in and will soon be talking about in our off the beaten path report. Here are some stories in the news this week of interest to RVers… National Parks considering per person charge, Interior Secretary tells Congress Too many people get into the national parks for free, U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee last week. The National Parks Services offers free or discounted entrance to active military service members, disabled people, seniors and fourth graders. Zinke said that is too many discounts, and the cost per vehicle needs to go up or instead of charging per carload, parks need to charge per person to help bring in revenue. Family says they were locked inside a Camping World RV lot in Arizona
