It's election day in the United States. In a matter of hours results will begin rolling in for Donald Trump and Joe Biden. It has been a campaign marred by a pandemic, protests and police killings in what is being called the most important election in decades. Already voters are queuing at polling booths across the country and it's set to be the highest voter turn out in a century. But there are fears that whatever the result, the response will be a violent one. Police in key swing states have been preparing for clashes. In Washington DC the Empire State Building and prominent shop fronts have been boarded up for safety and the White House has been fenced in. This is far from business as usual on election day. Simon Marks is our correspondent in Washington DC. He speaks to Susie Ferguson.

What is a GaL? Not just a cute name for a girl. A Guardian ad Litem is a lawyer, who is assigned to a child in foster care, and their job is to represent the best interest of the children they serve. If a child in foster care is 12 and older, they are legally able to request another attorney. The other lawyer advocates for what that child wants. The lighthearted example that Kim Turner shared with us is that a GaL will advocate that their client needs to eat vegetables every day, and their personal attorney can advocate that the child would like to eat candy instead. Obviously the issues are more serious, but that's a picture of the two lawyers' roles in a foster child's case. Definition of ad litem : for the lawsuit or action : appointed by the court to represent a client or estate in a particular legal action Merriam Webster There is recourse for GaLs who neglect to visit their clients before a court hearing! They must sign affidavits that state that they visited their clients! So if you are a foster parent who has never heard from your GaL, you need to speak up! But keep in mind that the GaL may send out a social worker who represents their law office, and this is the norm. Kim Turner, who has been practicing Juvenile Law for 15 years. She has 100 cases, which involves 150+ children. THAT'S A LOT OF KIDS! She has 3 amazing Social Workers who work for her, and they often go out to visit the foster children and report back to Kim. She makes every effort to visit the children herself. But her main job is to be at court, representing her clients in front of a judge. What is SB1473, and how does it affect foster families? Kim mentioned that a new law was passed in August of 2018, and here are some facts about it: "SB1473, enacted into law on August 3, 2018, amended Arizona’s child welfare statutes in important ways. The legislature adopted these changes in an 87:1 vote, demonstrating the strong consensus behind the spirit and letter of the reforms. "The law creates a presumption that foster families who have cared for an infant for nine months or more are kin. If, after nine months, a party wants to move an infant to another relation or placement, the change of placement must be in the infant’s best interest; "When a child is taken into custody, DCS is now specifically required to make an initial search for adult relatives of the child within thirty days from the date the child is taken into custody. In performing the initial search, DCS must exercise due diligence in identifying and notifying a child’s adult kin (including those adults with a significant relationship) within that thirty-day time frame." We also referenced Michelle Obama's new book, as well as Kevin Hart's biography, in our Light Bulb Moments. Both books are wonderful and worth the read. The (Good) Word of the Day Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Philippians 4:8 This was our good Word for episode 49 as well, but it's because it is so powerful. It is easy to be jaded by the grim facts and figures of foster care. The children in the system are victims who deal with trauma every single day. The Bible commands us to care for orphans and widows, but foster kids are not necessarily orphans! So many of them have parents, and they daily deal with their allegiance to their biological families, and life in foster care. So even though these children are not orphans, ALL CHILDREN need caring adults who love them, support them, and can guide them at every stage of life. What this means is that as consumers, we buy things, and if there is something wrong with it, we feel no qualms about returning it, with no thoughts of having any responsibility in its defects. But as gardeners, we see things that are not thriving and think 'what did I do wrong here, and how can I fix this?' This is how we need to look at our marriages, as well as all of our relationships (with foster kids, friends, etc) Draining your pool every few years. Chris is learning about this. Jihae takes for granted that she doesn't have to think about this. But, Jihae is concerned that people will think they are BOUGIE for having a pool. Which lead to a conversation about what is BOUGIE. Apparently Chris has NEVER heard anyone use this word before. "Urban Dictionary’s top entry for bougie defines it thus: “Aspiring to be a higher class than one is. Derived from bourgeois - meaning middle/upper class, traditionally despised by communists.” So in modern-day English, someone who is bougie is creating an air of wealth or upper class status — whether it's true or not." (taken from an article on USA Today) The (Good) Word of the Day: Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Philippians 4:8 This is Lily's 'life verse' which we picked out for her when she was a baby. She has really grown in this, which we are so thankful for! Even though being a foster sister can be very difficult, especially when you have to say good bye to the cutest babies in the world, she would not trade that experience for the non-traumatic experience of not knowing those babies. This week's episode deals with Life Hacks for your home, so that every person in your home can experience just a little more peace. Cause we all need more peace, right? Especially when you have 7 people living in that house. So, Life Hack 1: Chores and Money. We recently read a blog article by our friend, Grant Botma, about what he does with his kids. He's a financial expert, so we knew it was going to be good. You can read it here. He discusses how he does not give his kids an allowance, or pay them for chores that are expected of them: "These are cleaning messes you make, doing your laundry, your dishes, and other household chores that are part of being a household member. When my kids are eventually on their own, they won’t get paid to do their own dishes or laundry. As a result, these are tasks they need to do without financial incentive." You just have to read the whole article. Or watch this video. It's so good. We are also trying to teach our kids about taking initiative, budgeting their money, and being productive members of the family. Our concern for older foster kids, especially ones who will age out, is that they have never been taught how to manage their money. So, this is especially important to think about, especially if you get older teenagers who come through your home or group home. We are reading a book called 'How to Raise and Adult' and it is so great. They talk about the vital necessity of teaching children to do chores. Some of them, Grant hits on in his article, but this is a Long book, so the author goes into great depths about many parenting issues. But chores is the one we focused on for this week. Life Hack 2: Dealing with Anxiety The next life hack we talk about is dealing with anxiety via metacognition. What does this mean? Thinking about what you think about. We straight up stole this from this sermon that our brother, Robert, preached a few weeks ago, about Peace. Based off of Philippians 4:8, which is the Good Word of the Day, we are charged to think about 'whatever is true'. This means, for those struggling with anxiety, they must leave the Land of What Ifs, and live in the Land of What Is. It's ok to be prepared for some worst case scenarios, but when all we think about is the worst case scenario, then we fill our minds with anxiety and fear. This is not how we are called to live! Paul, who wrote Philippians 4, was in prison, not in a field of flowers, writing these beautiful words. I think that this fact alone is so encouraging, and a beautiful example that we can fight off anxiety in the safety of our homes. Life Hack 3: Quit Comparing Just 5 short years ago, I was sitting in my kitchen googling how to transform my ugly green-ish laminate countertops to LOOK LIKE granite. With a paint kit. And now I am the proud owner of granite counter tops. I share this because I don't want people to look at my house and feel jealous or sad. I want people to know our context - which is we work hard, we save money, and we do things that we can afford. We also live in Arizona, where the cost of living is NOT high! My big house with it's big yard, costs the same as my brother's condo with NO yard, in Toronto. Context. Perspective. Gratitude. These three things will surely help us all to quit comparing our lives to other peoples', and to find joy in what we do have. We have a choice in what we think about, and how we do that! Do not let comparison rob you of your contentment.
