Teaching an ELA elective that you've dreamed up yourself is such a joy. Today I want to stir up some ideas together for the next time you've got the chance to put your own spin on an older course or propose a new course altogether. So let's start with a few questions: Would you rather take a course called "Theater" or "Contemporary Theater: The Triumphs of Hamilton & Wicked "? "Creative Writing" or "Writing for Change across Platforms"? "Film & Literature" or "How the Oscars got it Wrong"? "Argument Writing" or "How to Get What You Want (with your Writing)." "Digital Literacy" or "Understanding Spin: How the Sites You Choose Impact What You Believe." While many schools continue to run electives like "Creative Writing" and "Poetry," which are often wonderful courses, I believe it's time for a shift in framing. Writing is EVERYWHERE today, playing a vital role in our politics, our science, our businesses, our media creation and consumption, our entertainment, and our understanding of the world. To help our students see that, we can tap into modern platforms and media to hook our students, teaching similar key skills and texts in a new context, alongside more contemporary voices. In this episode of Thought Leadership Leverage, host Peter Winick sits down with Jason Lavender, the co-founder and CEO of Electives. Jason's career journey is anything but linear. He started as an actuary, transitioned into strategy consulting, and eventually found his entrepreneurial spirit while working closely with innovators. A serendipitous six-week improv class, gifted by his wife, fueled his passion for creativity and human connection, shaping his unique career path. Jason founded Electives to revolutionize corporate training. Frustrated by ineffective, impersonal training videos, he envisioned a platform offering live, virtual, and interactive learning. Electives aims to make high-quality, engaging training accessible and redefine who can teach in the corporate world. By recruiting experts from diverse fields—FBI agents, astronauts, professors, and executives—they provide a rich library of curated content, solving real problems without the need for months of searching. Electives offers two training models: Private classes tailored to a company's culture and Electives Membership, allowing employees to choose live classes from a broad selection. This dual approach addresses both team-wide issues and individual development needs. Electives also simplifies the procurement process, handling all logistics and payments, thus eliminating administrative headaches for both clients and instructors. Looking ahead, Jason is excited about integrating AI to match business objectives with the necessary skills and corresponding courses, further enhancing the impact and efficiency of Electives. Three Key Takeaways: • Interactive Learning Over Pre-recorded Content: Electives aims to replace ineffective training videos with live, virtual, interactive learning experiences, featuring experts from diverse fields such as FBI agents, astronauts, and executives. • Simplified Procurement and Payment Processes: Electives streamlines the process of finding, vetting, hiring, and paying trainers, offering a single point of contact for clients and ensuring instructors are paid promptly. • Future Integration of AI: Electives is developing AI technology to align business objectives with the necessary skills and corresponding courses, enhancing training effectiveness and efficiency. Do you have training videos that you are not sure what to do with? Be sure to check out this short video where Peter Winick gives tips for creating and monetizing training videos.

Clinical elective courses provide additional specialty knowledge for prelicensure nursing students; however, it is unknown how these courses impact nurses' clinical practice after graduation. Drs. Lisa Lewis and Michelle Hartman describe their study on the impact of these electives on new graduates' clinical practice. Half of the new graduates worked in clinical areas that were the same, or related to, the elective they took. Graduates felt that taking the elective improved their confidence in the clinical setting and provided increased knowledge that put them at an advantage over their peers. Practice partners also reported benefits for their agency. Learn more about these clinical elective courses in their article.

Welcome to the Thursday edition of The Spark Creativity Teacher Podcast, a podcast for English teachers in search of creative teaching strategies. Whether you're new to the show or a long-time listener, I'm so glad you're here for this week's mini episode. Today, I want to talk about Youtube, and how we can use students' love for it to our ELA advantage. One of my goals for this year is to create the curriculum for an elective based on Youtube. I've recently watched my son go through the transition from watching Disney Plus and Netflix in his chill time to watching exclusively Youtube creators. He learns magic and parkour skills from them, watches them unbox things he loves, and generally would rather be subscribing to their channels than being entertained by the billions of dollars behind the entertainment industry. He's already made the first video for his own channel, and he was willing to work through a LOT of frustrations as he tried to figure out the problems of audio, angle, lighting, script, theme, file size, and everything else required. I'm sure you've seen this same interest in Youtube in student after student. So what does that mean for us, as educators? There's an incredible hook here for our students. I'm thinking about a Youtube elective (or unit) that looks at so many ELA skills that matter in our students' communication, through the lens of video. Hooks. Closings. Making an argument. Sharing research. Interviewing. Documenting. I'm imagining projects like short documentaries, time lapses, mini profiles, travel videos about your local community, PSA videos about issues kids care about, video versions of college essays or performance poems. The 21st century skills are EVERYWHERE, no matter what topics you and your students choose to dive into. I could go on and on and on, and maybe later, in another episode, I will. But for now, I just want to highly recommend that we consider Youtube an ally in our teacherly quest to help kids see just how relevant ELA is to their real life lives. You only have to look as far as the National Geographic, New York Times, and White House channels to know that Youtube plays a highly significant role in communication today. Lately I've been thinking a lot about electives. Electives I want to design, like one about Youtube creation and one about Taylor Swift, and the amazing electives teachers in our community are designing and teaching around the world. So of course I'm really excited that today on the podcast we've got the first show in a new series about creative electives. My hope is that this series will bring you inspiration for new electives you can propose or new units you can teach, modeled on your favorite parts of other people's electives, within your current courses. I'll be interviewing teachers about some of their favorite electives - what they are, what they accomplish, and how they do it. On today's show we're diving into an interview with Amanda Beal, a creative teacher in Northern Minnesota. She's going to be talking about a powerful elective for the world today, when we are so divided and yet so fearful of talking about the issues that divide us. I'm going to let her reveal the name and nature of this elective in just a moment - so stay tuned. Go Further: Explore alllll the Episodes of The Spark Creativity Teacher Podcast. I met Keith Nelson for the first time in this week's Keoni Chats. He was born and raised in Portland, OR and we are both alumni from the same high school and college. I reached out to him through our high school's facebook group and he graciously accepted. This chat was a challenge for me, not only because this is our first time meeting, but because of his extensive resume and figuring out where to go first. Keith is a Comedian and Actor of over 30 years. Outside of the comedy stage, Keith has been in projects such as: Electives, Not for Nothin', and Mobsters and Mormons. Keith and I talked about the importance of being on time in his world and he shared some stories from the stand up comedy world. Check out his website here: https://www.keithrossnelson.org/ .

Step into our virtual classroom as hosts Devin Siebold and James Yon embark on a wild ride of laughs, groans, and occasional sing-alongs in this episode of Crying In My Car. We are revisiting cherished "computer days," reliving the adrenaline rush of sneaky gaming sessions during school hours. Oh, how the iMac keyboard echoed the sweet symphony of rebellion with occasional learning. We look at the immersive power of Oculus, lamenting the slow pace of educational systems in integrating such advancements. James, our techie troubadour, contributes insights on how schools can get their tech game on point and offers a heartfelt rendition of Little Mermaid to lighten the mood. Brace yourself for our notorious "Teachers in the News" segment, where educational professionals make headlines for all the wrong reasons including stories about in-class White Claw discoveries, illicit student-teacher relationships, and gun-wielding substitute teachers. We also investigate the recent decision of a teacher's union to implement a new raise system and shortened school days, leaving us pondering whether it will be PE, Art, or other Electives that get the short end of the stick? Then we dive into the murky waters of the Atlanta school system, where rules are bent, second chances given, and grades become as flexible as a gymnast. Devin opens his personal vault of memories, reminiscing about an ex who mastered the art of finessing grades in nursing school. He rounds off with a comedic yet thought-provoking list: "Top 10 signs your nurse cheated to get their degree" and reflects on how teachers and nurses share common struggles in their professions. Whether you are a new school counselor or have been one for years, it's always great to hear from other school counselors. To celebrate 2 years of IMPACT, we will be hearing from IMPACT members every week in March. I know hearing from these school counselors will leave you feeling inspired! Aimee Garcia is joining us today to share what her role as a school counselor looks like. She is sharing all about how she became interested in school counseling, what she loves about being a school counselor, how she collaborates with the school social worker, what struggles and frustrations she faces, and what a day in her role looks like. Aimee also shares what she loves about being an IMPACT member and how it helps her be prepared with resources for any lessons she needs to teach. Aimee Garcia is a first year school counselor, wife, and mother of two, working at a public charter school in San Antonio, Texas. She has been in education for ten years, spending the majority of that time as a teacher at the middle school she once attended as a teenager. She taught middle school art, gifted and talented, and English classes and was named teacher of the year in 2017. Through her years teaching middle school, she found that one of her favorite parts of the day were the personal interactions she had with students and the conversations that led to both parties leaving feeling a little bit better. As a life long learner Aimee always looked for ways to challenge herself within teaching roles, becoming an Arts Integrations Specialist, Electives department leader, and Group Travel coordinator. Eventually her path led her back to school, where she earned her Master's Degree in School Counseling. With her career in School Counseling now in full force, she continues to challenge herself as a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate working to earn her full LPC license in the next few years. * Show Notes: https://brightfutures-counseling.com/podcast-episodes/day-in-the-life-of-a-school-counselor * Resources Mentioned: Sign up for the Ultimate Small Group Experience : https://www.stressfreeschoolcounseling.com/smallgroups Join the IMPACT 2.0 membership for ongoing support and access to 300+ resources: https://www.stressfreeschoolcounseling.com/impact Enroll in the Stress Free School Counseling Course: https://www.stressfreeschoolcounseling.com/enroll * Connect with Rachel: Shop: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Bright-Futures-Counseling Blog: https://brightfutures-counseling.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brightfuturescounseling/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2473191466030095 If you are enjoying School Counseling Simplified please follow and leave us a review on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/school-counseling-simplified-podcast/id1534494971
