A recent study, based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), has found that women who rarely engage in sexual activity have a 70% higher risk of dying compared to those who have sex at least once per week. Additionally, individuals with depression who had sex much less than once per week had a 197% higher risk of dying than those who had sex around once per week. These findings were published in the Journal of Psychosexual Health. Frequent sex has been shown to offer numerous health benefits. It helps reduce stress and improve mood through the release of endorphins and oxytocin. It can also boost the immune system, making the body more resistant to infections and illnesses. Regular sexual activity promotes cardiovascular health by increasing heart rate and circulation. It enhances sleep quality due to the release of the hormone prolactin, which is associated with relaxation. Frequent sex can also improve intimacy and strengthen relationships, contributing to overall emotional well-being. In this episode, Dr. Susan Oakley & Holly want to know do you: Schedule or Sizzle? LBP Episode:190 Swimming on your period: Gross or Go for It? With Dr. Susan Oakley

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 19, 2024 16:30

Periods can be annoying when they arrive unexpectedly, like when you're all set for a beach day or a swim. Swimming on your period is one of those things we've all got questions about, right? And there's two big ones. Firstly: can you swim while on your period? And secondly: what should you wear to protect yourself while swimming on your period? • Is it safe to swim on your period? Swimming on your period is completely safe. Just choose a tampon or menstrual product that feels comfortable and fits your lifestyle needs. • Can I get a vaginal infection from swimming on my period? You can develop itchiness, a burning sensation, or a yeast infection from staying in a wet bathing suit for too long. It's a good idea to change into dry clothes after you swim, and if you experience any of these symptoms, talk to your healthcare provider. • How often should you change it? Change your tampon as soon as you're done swimming, or every 4 to 8 hours while you are swimming. A wet, used tampon can be a breeding ground for bacteria — which can lead to toxic shock syndrome (TSS). You'll want to make sure you're being safe and mindful. Ultimately, it is completely safe and hygienic to swim whilst on your period. Although there are some special considerations to think about before you go swimming - like taking extra tampons, pads, or period undies to change into after swimming - being on your period should not stop you from enjoying summer and taking a dip! Tune in for some fun and fabulous insights. Thank you, ladies, for listening. Always feel free to ask Dr. Oakley any women's health questions at any time. If you're a natural mosquito magnet, it makes sense to do what you can to lower the risk of being bitten. The foods you eat may play a role in how attractive you are to mosquitoes. So, what attracts Mosquitoes? Beer, bananas and ketchup as well as the smell of lotions, perfumes, and sweat draws mosquitoes in but supposedly there are certain foods that these pests don't like. Mosquito-repelling foods: • Garlic, onions, and apple cider vinegar, when consumed, are said to change the way you smell and make you less detectable to mosquitoes. • Tomatoes, beans, and lentils as well as other foods rich in thiamine are said to release a smell that repels mosquitoes and other bugs. • Grapefruit, oranges, and lemons are all citrus fruits that mosquitoes apparently aren't fond of smelling. Other ways to prevent mosquito bites include: • Wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants • Covering strollers and baby carriers with mosquito netting • Planning outdoor events when mosquito activity is low (they're most active from dusk to dawn) • Make sure your window screens are not ripped or torn • Keep entry doors and garage doors closed when not in use It goes without saying but we'll say it, anyway, speak with your doctor about which insect repellent they recommend for you and your family members before making a purchase. If more people around you seem to be coming down with Covid lately, that's because infections are indeed on the rise nationally. Covid infections have historically spiked over the summer, in part because of an increase in travel and people congregating indoors, where it's cooler. Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that COVID test positivity rates and emergency room visits are steadily on the rise. Dr. Susan Oakley & Holly will go over what to do if you get COVID this summer and tips if you're on any medication/antibiotics and end up getting a UTI or yeast infection during COVID. If you contract COVID, it's a good idea to first test yourself at home with an antigen test. If your test is negative, you should test yourself again in 24 hours because it can take a few days for the virus to become detectable in your sinuses. If you're concerned about your symptoms, reach out to your primary care physician or visit an urgent care to get a PCR test ― these are more sensitive and catch a higher percentage of cases. Thank you for listening. Always feel free to ask Dr. Oakley any women's health questions at any time. In a man's world of growers and showers, consider it nature's way of bringing some summer penis loving your way. While there might be some truth to the idea that penises appear bigger in the heat, there isn't enough research on the subject for doctors to say whether it's absolutely, completely true. But your testicles absolutely do hang a little lower when it's hot, though. If you're a summer penis skeptic, let's see what our man Bruuuuuuce has to say about the summer penis in this episode with Dr. Oakley & Holly. Question: Dr. Oakley, I heard on TikTok that Mucinex can help you get pregnant. Is that true? Let's start at the beginning: Mucinex is designed to treat cold and flu symptoms, and there's nothing in the packaging or directions that says you should take this to help you get pregnant. Medications like Mucinex, which contain the active ingredient guaifenesin, thin the mucus throughout your body. One theory, though it is unproven, is that it could thin the mucus in the cervix, making it easier for sperm to pass through more easily. If you are taking these medications, be sure to discuss their potential impact on birth control and fertility with your provider. Episode 167: You Ask Dr. Oakley: Can “sex fasting “really improve your sexual health?

A sex fast is just what it sounds like: intentionally abstaining from sex. Unlike celibacy, a sex cleanse is a short break from sexual intimacy. Generally taking place over a predetermined period, the individual tends to return to bedroom business as usual – whatever that looks like for them – once the period is up. The purpose of sexual fasting is to gain greater self-control, self-awareness, and emotional harmony. It can also be used to focus on personal growth, creativity, and productivity, without the distractions and energy drain associated with sexual activity. Another benefit of sexual fasting is that it can deepen emotional connections and intimacy in relationships. By abstaining from sexual activity, couples can focus on other forms of intimacy, such as communication, emotional support, and shared experiences. This can lead to a stronger bond and a deeper understanding of each other's needs and desires. Sexual fasting can also help to build trust and respect in relationships, as partners learn to respect each other's boundaries and desires. Thank you, ladies, for listening. “A ‘ghost poop' is a term used to describe when one's stool sinks to the bottom of the toilet and seemingly vanishes without a trace,” in other words, if you've ever gone to the bathroom and then looked into the toilet, only to see your feces disappear, it means that you've experienced the elusive “ghost poop” — and the same thing goes if you've wiped and there's nothing on the toilet paper. This type of poop, where you feel like you've passed something, but nothing is visible in the toilet or when wiping, may suggest that you are one of the healthiest individuals out there. It is a sign that your body is receiving adequate amounts of fiber and fatty acids while maintaining proper circadian rhythms aligned with nature. If you don't find yourself having many — or any — ghost poops, you shouldn't be alarmed, either. In fact, having ghost poop every day isn't always ideal, as you are unable to see the changes in your feces if it just disappears all the time. Do you ever look at your poop before you flush? Dr. Oakley & Holly will tell if they do in this episode and you can answer this question on our FB poll on the Lady Bod Pod FB page. Thank you, ladies, for listening. If you're in the mood to try something new and eccentric, you can almost always count on TikTok for inspiration. So, the idea of vabbing is inserting clean fingers into your clean vagina and dabbing your vaginal fluids onto your pressure points (wrists, neck, and behind the ears), and using it as perfume. According to Healthline, our vag fluids contain pheromones and its smell is our “sexual scent of attraction.” Who knew? Vabbing had already been written about in books prior to going viral online, but TikTok has put the idea in front of the masses. TikToker Mandy Lee was the first to bring vabbing to social media, and now more and more women are revealing stories of men falling at their feet thanks to the unconventional seduction method. Vabbing works on the theory of pheromones. Pheromone research is nothing new, and the study of human chemical communication has been widely investigated. It was once believed that all mammals – humans included – could attract a mate of the same species by secreting signals through scent. However, its role in humans remains uncertain and unproven. What are the health implications of vabbing? No matter your feelings on the subject, if you want to try vabbing, you'll need to practice good hygiene. It's important to be aware of your sexual status when it comes to sharing your bodily fluids. Let's not forget that STIs still exist. Dr. Oakley & Holly will go over some of the tips on vabbing in this episode, like: • ● Washing your hands both before and after • ● Not allowing areas you've ‘vabbed' to touch anything or anyone • ● Wiping down gym equipment before and after use • ● Refraining from vabbing if you're on your period or have an STI • ● Making sure you get checked by a professional if you think you sense an unusual or bad odor Thank you, ladies, for listening. Episode 161: How Often Should You Wash Your Bath Towels?

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 29, 2023 26:52

This really comes down to personal preference. There are no hard and fast rules, but most people tend to have a separate hand towel in the bathroom for drying freshly washed hands. It also means any guests visiting your toilet don't have to dry their hands on your bath towel. You might think your towel is fine because you only use it on your clean body but think again. Even your freshly washed skin can harbor germs and bacteria that will transfer to your towel when you dry your skin. Additionally, bathrooms are warm, humid spaces that make them the perfect breeding ground for bacteria — meaning there could also be airborne bacteria and molds landing on your towel. If you typically use the same bath towel for a few days at a time, you're not alone. According to Good Housekeeping, almost 50% of the people surveyed said they go for a full week before they retire a towel. As for towels that you take outside the house, such as to use at the gym, the pool, or the beach, Dr. Oakley recommends washing them after every use as they come in contact with sweat, airborne bacteria, and other contaminants. Most of us would agree that there's something very comforting about wrapping yourself in a big, warm, fluffy bath towel after a bath or shower. It's less comforting, though, to think about the germs and bacteria that may be breeding on your towels. If your towel smells, that's a warning to wash it sooner rather than later, so if you catch a musty whiff before you start to dry off, err on the side of caution and toss it into the laundry basket. Dr. Oakley and Holly share in this episode how often they wash their bath towels. So, listen up LBP besties, washing your towels is seriously easy. So, there's no need to stress. It's just a case of knowing how to wash towels effectively, that's all. So, for best results, here's what you need to do. • Wash white towels at a high temperature (this helps to keep them looking nice and bright) • Clean colored towels on a warm (not hot) cycle • Only use fabric softener sparingly as it can impact the absorbency of towels — white vinegar is an effective alternative. • The best way to dry towels is in the tumble dryer with a couple of dryer balls MAD-LOVE going out to our wonderful Sponsor UTIVA!!! Episode 160: What is keto crotch? Dr. Oakley explains keto crotch & what you can do to get rid of vaginal odor

There's no doubt that a keto diet is a great way to lose weight, but it can also hit you straight in the vagina. Have you recently started keto and noticed an unpleasant vaginal odor? You may have developed keto crotch. Keto crotch is a noticeable change in vaginal odor after starting the keto diet. While there isn't a lot of scientific research on this topic, plenty of women report that they experience keto crotch. Changing to a high-fat and low-carb diet shifts your body to burn fat instead of sugar for energy. Keto triggers profound metabolic changes that support weight loss, balance hormone levels, and improve cognition. The good news is that once your body adjusts to burning fat, keto crotch will go away. Here's what Dr. Oakley & Holly will go over in this episode: • Yes, it's 100% true that eating a keto diet can mess your vagina's pH • A keto diet is based on the consumption of high protein and fat, and low carbs. This entire thing might be great when it comes to weight loss, but when you talk about the pH level of your vagina, it fails miserably. • How to get rid of keto crotch • Experiencing keto crotch doesn't mean keto isn't right for you. As your body adjusts to the keto diet, unpleasant smells around your crotch area will diminish and there are plenty of steps you can take in the meantime to reduce symptoms. • Eat plenty of green leafy vegetables. • Green leafy veggies like spinach, collard greens, and mustard greens are rich sources of chlorophyll, a bright green pigment. Chlorophyll is also known as an “internal deodorizer” and helps with keto-breath and other keto-related body odors. If keto crotch is linked to pH imbalance or changes to the bacterial ecosystem of the vagina, a probiotic supplement can reduce odors and support your vaginal health like from Utiva Health. If you recently took a peek down south and were surprised (to say the least) to see wrinkles, you're far from alone. Everyone has wrinkles there. Visible signs of aging, like crow's feet and gray hairs, are a common part of getting older. And just like the rest of your body, your vagina and vulva also change as you age. During your 40s and 50s, your body starts producing less estrogen as you enter perimenopause, the transitional period before menopause. Estrogen keeps vaginal collagen plump and moist and helps provide good blood flow to the area. However, during perimenopause, decreasing estrogen levels can make vaginal tissue thinner and less elastic. Your clitoris may shrink, and your labia may become less full, potentially changing in color, and starting to sag. A decrease in collagen may contribute to sagging skin all over your body, including your vulva, and weaker pelvic floor muscles. Still, there are ways to help you keep your vagina healthy, like doing Kegel exercises and using lube or a vaginal moisturizer. While it's normal for aging vaginas to change, that doesn't mean you have to deal with uncomfortable side effects. If you have any concerns about your vaginal health, consult with a healthcare provider. A big Shout-Out to our fabulous Sponsor UTIVA!!! If there's one thing that makes us envy men (apart from the fact that they don't have to suffer period and labor pains), it's the fact that they can stand and pee in public restrooms. The idea of sitting on a toilet seat with your bare skin and especially not knowing the hygiene condition of the toilet or how the person before you used the toilet…you can feel a little squeamish about it. You asked, Dr. Oakley: • Should I Use a Toilet Seat Cover? • Can sitting on a public toilet cause harm to the skin? • I've read that squatting while using the restroom can be harmful to pelvic health. Is this true? What does the pelvic floor consist of? • Sphincter control, [which refers to the] opening and closing of the urinary and anal sphincters. • Sexual function (“Yes, better pelvic health means better orgasms!”) • Stabilization, [which] stabilizes your pelvis, hips, and low back. • Internal organs support (“Don't strain when you pee or poop-- you could cause a prolapse!”) • “Sump pump,” [which] circulates lymph, blood, oxygen, and nutrients. One thing you shouldn't do. Hover over the seat while you pee. Doing so puts you in a partial squatting position, which can weaken your pelvic floor muscles over time. It also makes it harder for your bladder to fully empty. That can increase the risk for problems like incontinence or urinary tract infections. The only thing more miserable than a urinary tract infection (UTI) is when it happens again, and again, and again. But, good news, there are ways to prevent post-menopause RECURRENT URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS. But sometimes urinary urgency, burning, and that “I gotta go NOW” feeling is NOT FROM an infection but need a completely different kind of treatment. You need to know the difference. Dr. Oakley also stresses that transposition of fecal matter and hormone changes make you more susceptible to UTIs. PSA: wipe front to back, ladies! In this episode, Dr. Oakley & Holly will go over some of your questions below: • I am 44 years old and about 6 months ago, I had an issue with an itchy bottom. It is not all the time, but it seems to be worse when it is time for my monthly menses. I didn't ask the doctor when I had my recent pap smear, but he said everything looked normal. However, I am really embarrassed by it. What could be causing my vagina to itch so much? • Do hormone balancing supplements work? If so is there one you recommend? I'm wondering about it for weight, hot flashes, night sweats etc... I've been told I'm not in any stages of menopause but I'm having trouble with all of these things at 40. Any advice or help would be appreciated. • What can you use/do to feel fresh after having intercourse, since douching is not recommended? Thank you for listening. Some women have two vaginas; the condition is called 'uterus didelphys'. Uterus didelphys is a congenital condition where you're born with two uteruses. It's commonly called a double uterus. It can cause pregnancy complications and painful menstruation. Some people have surgery to treat uterus didelphys, but most cases don't require treatment. How is uterus didelphys diagnosed? Dr. Oakley & Holly will go over those steps in this episode, like your healthcare provider may diagnose a double uterus during a routine pelvic exam after feeling two cervixes or two vaginas. They'll likely order additional imaging tests to confirm uterus didelphys. How does it affect you? Apart from the inconvenience of potentially having to deal with two periods, many women with a double uterus have normal sex lives, pregnancies, and deliveries, double-up, ugh, ugh... Ugh! (Like, Sir Mix-A-Lot - Baby Got Back) Take a moment and imagine the horror of two periods...in one month. Find out more in this episode. Thank you for listening. Episode 149: Menopause and Orgasms -WHY so many women have difficulty having an orgasm in menopause

Did you use to routinely have orgasms? Do you miss your orgasm? Would you like to have orgasms again? Yessssss!!! Dr. Oakley & Holly will chat on how you can overcome the negative symptoms of menopause and rediscover the joy of sex? “Love Your Body” and improving body confidence can be a simple way to get your sexy back. During menopause, your estrogen levels take a sharp decline, affecting your interest in sex, ability to become aroused or adequately stimulated through touch, and making it difficult to reach orgasm during sexual activity. This hormone depletion leads to vaginal atrophy, the thinning and weakening of vaginal tissue, which makes intercourse uncomfortable, increases the risk of UTIs and other infections, and causes tissue tearing and bleeding. So Lube It Up and moisturizer! Unlike some symptoms of menopause that lessen over time, such as hot flashes, the dryness from vaginal atrophy tends to continue and worsen unless treated. Using an over-the-counter moisturizer every 2 or 3 days counteracts vaginal dryness while also providing lubrication for the friction of sexual activity. You asked Dr. Oakley: Why do UTIs occur in menopausal women? As you age, your vaginal tissue thins, making it more likely to cause infection. UTIs risk is much higher throughout perimenopause and menopause due to the drop in estrogen levels; the hormone estrogen allows good bacteria to grow and helps maintain an acidic environment, keeping the bad bacteria out. Incontinence and bladder prolapse are also other factors that cause UTIs in postmenopausal women.
