This year, for just the seventh time since the start of the HIV pandemic, a person was cured of the virus. That patient, along with the others cured, had received stem cell transplants to treat another life-threatening disease, blood cancer. But because these transplants carry a significant mortality risk, they're simply not a viable cure for the roughly 40 million people globally living with the virus. Dr. Sharon Lewin, Professor of Medicine at Doherty Institute at the University of Melbourne, Australia joins The Excerpt to discuss why, in the 40 years since the onset of the HIV pandemic, we still don't have a cure.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The agonising wait for the Queensland border to reopen is finally over, with the state's premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announcing the hard border will come down at 1am December 13.Ms Palaszczuk declared during a press conference at 2pm local time that Australians will be able to enter the Sunshine State well before Christmas, but there will be several requirements upon entry.“Fully vaccinated travellers from interstate hot spots can arrive by road or air,” Ms Palaszczuk said.“You must have a negative COVID test in the previous 72 hours. No quarantine is required if you are fully vaccinated. If you are not fully vaccinated, you must arrive by air only and hotel quarantine for 14 days.”The welcome announcement comes more than a month after the state's government previously projected a reopening of December 17.The revised reopening comes as Queensland inches towards its goal of 80 per cent double dose vaccination.Currently, more than 78 per cent of Queenslanders have been fully vaccinated against coronavirus with the state expected to tick over to 79 per cent double dose later today.Ms Palaszczuk also announced that the timeframe for when someone is considered “fully vaccinated” had also been revised from December 13.“You will no longer have to wait the two weeks after your second dose to be considered fully vaccinated,” the premier explained.“The national guidelines say one week is enough.”Ms Palaszczuk said that all arrivals from “domestic hot spots” — regardless of vaccination status — must get another Covid-19 test on Day 5 once in Queensland.“There'll be penalties applying if you don't do that,” the premier said. It's good news for communities living on the NSW/Queensland border, with vaccinated border-zone residents able to move freely across the border for any reason from Monday.“You will need a border pass, and the border pass will run for 14 days,” she explained.“But you will not need a test. We know that it has been extremely difficult for our border communities, and we're hoping to provide some greater flexibility and freedom of movement for those communities.”Ms Palaszczuk unveiled the state's roadmap to freedom back in October with health authorities estimating at the time that Queensland would hit 80 per cent double dose by mid-December.Under the plan, when Queensland hits 80 per cent double dose, fully vaccinated Australians will be free to drive or fly into the state. They will be required to apply for a Queensland entry pass and have proof they've tested negative to Covid, via a PCR test, within 72 hours of their entry to the state.Speaking to reporters earlier today, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the decision on opening up early was “ultimately” with the premier.“The Doherty Institute scientific analysis that was done showed clearly once you get past 80 per cent, it is a game changer,” he said.“We have seen that in New South Wales, in Victoria and in the ACT. These states are living confidently with the virus and that is why we can come together this Christmas because of the great work that Australians have done.”Currently, under the 70 per cent double dose rules, interstate travellers from hotspots are able to fly into Queensland, provided they've returned a negative PCR test within 72 hours and they go into home quarantine for 14 days.Greater Adelaide was added to Queensland's hotspot list on Saturday after a high school reunion last week became the source of a cluster of Delta cases. From 1.00am AEST Sun 05 Dec 2021:❌ Greater Adelaide will be declared a hotspot.Anyone who has been in the area since 1am on 28 November, arriving into QLD after 1am tomorrow, will be required to go into 14 days mandatory quarantine.Find out more:https://t.co/rhly3MLQDa pic.twitter.com/6be3wsqdKy— Queensland Health (@qldhealth) December 4, 2021 Announcing the state's roadmap back in October, Ms Palaszczuk urged Queenslanders to embrace vaccination to get their freedoms back.“...

Scott Morrison has taken an extraordinary swipe at Mark McGowan, accusing him of doing more harm than good by keeping his state borders shut. The WA Premier has taken a hard line approach to keeping his state free of Covid, declaring he will not remove the border ban until 90 per cent of the over 12 population is fully vaccinated. On current projections, the state is not expected to hit that target until February 2022.It goes well above the 80 per cent figure previously agreed to by leaders under the national plan.Mr Morrison was out spruiking his climate credentials when he was asked to comment on the border ban. Photo / NCA NewsWireSpeaking from Newcastle on Monday, the Prime Minister publicly aired his grievance with Mr McGowan for ignoring scientifically backed advice.“The modelling done by the Doherty Institute makes it very clear and that's what was agreed in the national plan, not just once but twice and that is once you hit 80%, double dose vaccination rates, then you're able to move forward,” Mr Morrison told reporters.“Once you hit that 80% threshold, there is a scientifically-backed in position which says that you can take the next step.“And the advice we have from the Secretary of Treasury from Dr. Kennedy is once you go over 80% and you keep things locked down, you are doing more harm than good to your economy.“You're actually putting a price on Australians when you continue to put heavy restrictions on your economy, once you hit 80% vaccination rates.”Mr McGowan has kept a hard line stance on his states borders throughout the pandemic. Photo / The AustralianThe prime minister's lashing is just another headache for Mr McGowan who is being threatened with a fresh legal challenge to his border ban.Flight Centre chief executive Graham Turner said it was in the best interest of the economy, business and families to reopen at 80 per cent.He added the vaccine made his legal push different to the one brought by mining magnate Clive Palmer last year.“The federal government has decided between 70 and 80% of those 16 year olds vaccinated, that it‘s reasonable for states to open their borders,” the Flight Centre boss said.“It‘s not just our business interests, it's a whole range of different reasons … from business, and economic reasons … to family reunions.”“This is about going to the federal court and looking at the judicial review on whether the border directions are reasonable or unreasonable.“I think we have a democratic right to do that.”Flight Centre boss Graham Turner has indicated he will consider a legal challenge over the unreasonable borders. Photo / NCA NewsWireMeanwhile, WA AMA president Dr Andrew Miller told ABC Radio National he was “dumbfounded” by the legal challenge.“We‘ve seen New South Wales and Victoria be smashed with lockdowns and have their hospital system thrown into chaos and a lot of people have died in that time,” he said.“And this is something that West Australia has managed to avoid by staying the course with what are very difficult border restrictions for many people.“But we have no taste for going through unnecessary deaths, disease, illness and business collapses, as has been seen in the communities in New South Wales and Victoria.“We just want the vaccine levels you have in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, to be throughout Western Australia before we endanger our population.”- by Courtney Gould, news.com.au

He joins Nathanael Cooper on Please Explain to sort the facts from the spin and help us understand what life will be like when Australia reopens. The covid zero cultists were in tears last week as their dear leader Dan abandoned their dream of eliminating the virus. With leaders now setting vaccine targets for reopening they have turned their attention to damming those who won't take the prick. That and more on tonight's Tim's News Explosion. While Victorian Dan Andrews has joined NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian in aiming for Doherty Institute modeling reopening targets of 70-80% of the eligible population are double vaccinated, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and WA Premier Mark McGowan are still vowing to keep their borders closed to protect their covid zero Oasis. Families were divided on the barricaded NSW-Queensland border for Father's Day. Dan is now talking at his press conferences about lockouts of the unvaccinated rather than blanket lockdowns. The namesake of Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity Professor Peter Doherty a former Nobel Prize laureate and Australian of the Year has begun abusing those on his Twitter who still don't wish to be vaccinated. He shared an expletive-ridden article from a website called McSweeney's which attempts to convince people to take the vaccine through name-calling and saying fuck in nearly every sentence.  Australia's continued police state lockdowns and expanding quarantine camp network are making us an international laughing stock and horror show. A resident of the Howard Springs camp in the Northern Territory vlogged about waiting to be fed like dogs waiting by their bowl. A teenager in a Melbourne Hotel Quarantine facility was sentenced to three months in jail after trashing his hotel room when he learned he wasn't going to be released for another 12 hours. The truckers' blockade that was rumored to occur last Tuesday 31 August did not eventuate with a small protest occurring in South East Queensland the day before. Rumors are circulating online that the truckers' blockade is occurring and is being covered up by the mainstream media. There is footage of trucks backed up on highways and produce shelves empty in Sydney supermarkets. But the more plausible explanation is that trucks are backed up due to border checkpoints and supermarket supply chains in Sydney have been disrupted due to staff having to self isolate due to being close contacts of cases. In international news, the NZ Countdown ISIS stabber terrorist who was shot dead last Friday after stabbing seven people at random has been named and shamed 32-year-old Sri Lankan national Ahamed Adil Mohamed Samsudee. Despite all the crises going on in the Biden Administration, his Federal Trade Commission is launching an investigation into broken McDonald's Ice Cream machines. Since COVID-19 hit, the science of modelling has moved into the spotlight. Today we're talking about the reasons for the difference between two recently published examples from the Doherty Institute and a preprint from ANU. Professor Ivo Mueller, an epidemiologist at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne, working across population health and immunity, explains the assumptions inherent in each. At a time where modelling is so prevalent, it's important to build modelling literacy and unpack the methodology of modelling, so we can all understand what they can and can't do! Today's interview is hosted by Cosmos Magazine editor Gail MacCallum.Find the science of everything at the Cosmos Magazine website Subscribe to Cosmos Magazine (print) or the Cosmos WeeklyWatch and listen to all our Cosmos Briefings

The Doherty Institute Model is the hottest ticket in town, with everyone from politicians to punters talking about what happens when we reach 70 and 80 per cent vaccination levels. But there are a lot of assumptions that have to be made to come up with a model, and Doherty Institute's plan is no different. Among other things, it assumes a certain level of cases, a functioning contact tracing system even at high numbers and vaccines that keep us immune to COVID-19. But on today's Coronacast, how valid are those assumptions in the real world?

If there's one thing that's become a feature of the COVID-19 pandemic, it's that it has seemed to drag on and on. While it seems like a long time ago, it was only early last year when the SARS-CoV-2 virus popped into our lives. But how far left have we got to go? If it was a play, what act are we in? And can we take an interval break? Also on today's show: * Doherty Institute modelling said we can start opening up at 70 per cent and 80 per cent vaccination rate. This was based on small numbers in the community. What would be the effect of opening with large numbers? * Since NSW is headed for thousands more cases, could people living there be travelling internationally before everyone else? * Has anyone caught COVID-19 twice? If so, was it worse the second time?

The Doherty Institute is one of the best in the country and it's the organisation that's been advising the Commonwealth on how to get a soft landing in this pandemic when we eventually reopen to the world.
