I'm going to talk about saying no, but not just saying no, generally when you're feeling overwhelmed or think about productivity or one of the things we get told, and I definitely agree with it to a certain extent, and I've said it myself, is to say no to sad thing and constructively saying no or, you know, I'll check my calendar or I'll do whatever it is to put a little buffer between that person asking a question.   You having to get back with an answer straight away, because a lot of the time might say yes, reflexively and then look at me like, oh, I don't know how I'm going to fit this in. So, yes, when you feeling overwhelmed and you're not sure if you can do something or maybe you just don't want to say yes to something, saying no in a way that is constructive is helpful. However, when you're at work, you might feel more pressure.   If you say now, you might feel that you can't really. So here's what kind of works, yes, you should say no more often, because it will free up your time and really work for your productivity. But in practise, this advice can also kind of backfire, because while you can set boundaries around your work, you can't straight up refuse a task when your boss asks you to take it on. So you need to figure out a better way or method of saying no, which can at least turn that no into an actual actionable solution or like a no.   But so instead of saying no, a straight out no or no, blah, blah, blah, blah, you can also say no, let me check my calendar. But instead of saying no, ask when I'm without understanding sort of where your deadline might be, it can be superficial for you just to say no straight off the bat could be there asking you for something that they don't need for two months. So setting that boundary be like, OK, when do you need this body is really, really important.   And so the other thing you can do to help expand that is, oh, you need it by this date. OK, well, let's look at my calendar and see how this can fit in. So you want to sit down with your manager or whoever else, you know, time to look over your schedule together. This only works if you've got sort of time boxing in your calendar where you've blocked out certain times for certain things on certain tasks.   So you're like, OK, here is everything that is on my plate for the week ahead. For example, here, all my task is how long it should take to do them. This is what my calendar currently looks like. Now you want me to do this X, Y or Z task for whenever it might be. Let's see how I can fit it in. Maybe this task you've already given me that you can see here that aren't as much of a priority as this new task you want to give me.   So let's work to see where I can fit some time into work on this thing that you need me to work on and then we can figure out the priorities together. Now, the great thing about doing that is you're being proactive, showing how your time is being used, because a lot of managers really just don't have a clue. And you're saying you're happy to make space and time for this task, but they need to keep in mind how much of a priority it is and it helps them rethink their priorities and what they're asking.   So asking when they need it and then taking a look at everything that you need to do is super helpful when it comes to making sure you have time, block time, letting your manager know exactly what it is that you're doing and making sure that you have space and time to do said work. Now, just say, like we discussed before, just saying no isn't the best option. So having these extra questions like how long do you think it's going to take?   What steps and what other information do I need to make a concrete sort of plan about this? Because sometimes you think it's going to be one thing but really ends up taking X, Y and Z time. And so if you've already shown your commitment and said, OK, this is how much time I have, and then you figure out that, oh, actually, it's going to take X, Y and Z more time, you can then get back to manager and be like, remember when up to my count I had this amount of time we thought the task was going to take this amount of time.   Well, it's not it's going to take this amount of time because of X, Y and Z. So now let's take a look again, see if the timeline is still right and if that's what we want to do and how priority it is. And this is how I will fit it into how I work. So this is a just a different way that you can work with managers to help them respect your time, be let them see what you're doing and see give a little bit of pushback if they're trying to get you to do something that is out of scope or will take too much time and make you work overtime that they won't be paying for.   So I thank you for listening. This is janice@thecareerintrovert.com helping you build your brand and get hired. Look forward to speaking to you next week. Have a great rest of your week.

This second studio album is the one that would put Billy Squier at the top of the arena rock world in 1981.  Don't Say No would produce Squier's first breakthrough single, “The Stroke,” a critique of the music industry, and the album would continue to contribute singles and AOR hits as it remained on the Billboard album charts for over 2 years.Billy Squier got his start in the Boston music scene in the late 60's, playing in locally successful groups through the 70's, and releasing a moderately successful solo album in the spring of 1980.  Squier approached Brian May of Queen about producing his second album, but May had scheduling conflicts that kept him from working with Squier.  However, Brian May suggested Squier work with Reinhold Mack who had produced “The Game” for Queen.  Billy Squier would later continue his connection with Queen, opening for the band during their 1982 tour.  Billy Squier wrote his own songs and was a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, piano, and percussion.Squier left the music scene in the early 90's with the advent of grunge, but he often tours with Ringo Star as a part of his All Star Band.  He also does one-off concerts for charity, but spends much of his time in New York City with his wife. Are you ready for some early 80's arena rock?  Don't Say No! In the DarkThis song was the second single from the album, and the lead song for the album.  Some think that this song is about lovers keeping their cheating relationships secret.  This album is considered to bridge the hard rock sounds of the 70's with heavy metal of the 80's.  It has a Zeppelinesque feel to it.Don't Say NoThe title track is the last song on the album, and a deeper cut that was never released as a single.  It has an interesting “fade in” effect to kick it off.My Kind of LoverWhile this third single narrowly missed the top 40 (it made it to number 45), it was heavily played at the time.  It has a pop sentiment to it, but is a pretty straightforward song about sex and chasing a woman.Lonely Is the NightSurprisingly, this song was not released as a single, and did not make Squier's greatest hits album.  It's about a guy watching streetwalkers.  It was the B-side of “In the Dark,” and received heavy air play on rock radio. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The theme to “Raiders of the Lost Ark”This classic adventure film starring Harrison Ford as Dr. Indiana Jones made its debut in the summer of 1981.  This iconic tune is instantly recognizable today. STAFF PICKS:I Missed Again  by Phil CollinsRob's staff pick is from “Face Value,” Phil Collins' debut solo album.  The original name of the song was "I miss you, babe," but the band convinced him to change the name and lighten it up.  "Would you say if I was wasting my time or did I miss again?  ...I think I missed again."All Those Years Ago by George HarrisonThis tribute to John Lennon was originally intended as a song for Ringo Starr, but George Harrison brought it back to himself after the death of Lennon the previous winter.  Brian brings us his favorite Beatle.  Ringo, John and Linda McCartney played on this song, the first time they all appeared on a song together since 1970. Snowblind   by StyxBruce's staff pick features baritone James Young and tenor Tommy Shaw trading lead singer duties in this song about the dangers of cocaine.  It also created a stir when some groups insisted that there were backward masking messages from the devil embedded in the track.  This upset the band, who would make an entire concept album about censorship with their next effort, “Kilroy Was Here.”Nether Street  by BodastWayne finishes us off with a song recorded by a prog rock group that broke up in 1969 when guitarist Steve Howe joined Yes.  You'll recognize the riff because it is embedded in Yes's “Starship Trooper.”  The album was not released until June 1981. LAUGH TRACK:The Spanish Inquisition by Mel BrooksThe comedy “History of the World, Part I” by Mel Brooks brought us one of the most politically incorrect musical numbers ever penned.  "The Inquisition! What a show!"

Today is the legendary activist Yuri Kochiyama’s birthday! We’re celebrating by revisiting one of our favorite episodes of AAWW Radio, You Don’t Say No to Yuri Kochiyama.    In 2005, scholar and activist Diane C. Fujino released the biography Heartbeat of Struggle: the Revolutionary Life of Yuri Kochiyama. An in-depth examination of Kochiyama's life, the book follows her early years in a concentration camp in Arkansas during World War II, to her friendship with Malcolm X in New York City, and her years of radical political activism.    We hosted an event celebrating the release of this text in November 2005. Co-sponsored by the NYU A/P/A Institute, the event was curated by activist and musician Fred Ho. Fred Ho invited activists and political organizers Baba Herman Ferguson, Esperanza Martell, and Laura Whitehorn, all of whom had known and worked with Yuri over the years years, to discuss and celebrate her legacy. You’ll hear about how Yuri’s Harlem apartment was a social hub for activists in the 60s, the tireless work she did with the Jericho Movement to liberate political prisoners, fight for Puerto Rican independence, her prolific note taking, and more. Finally, Diane. C. Fujino will share the story of Yuri’s political awakening, and how she transformed from a budding activist to a symbol of revolutionary change.

Let’s say you want to be a musician. The music bug bit you, and you just can’t resist the urge to pick up an instrument, maybe keep a notebook handy at all times to write down ideas and lyrics. You start recording pieces of melodies and sing them to your phone before the ideas evaporate. Maybe it was because you saw that performance where the light bulb went off over your head, or you heard a song in a movie soundtrack that moved you, or you got on stage and felt more alive than anywhere else. However it happened, you are soon wood shedding and finding like minds to play with and then finding an audience to play to. The muse serves up a sweet elixir, and you may be forever under its spell. The Deer, from Austin, Texas, perform in Greer, SC 4-13-19. Photo: John Gillespie Our guests on this podcast are firmly in that camp, but there are also plenty of musicians who have dropped out. Some came back, too. In our first episode on Side Hustles, there were a lot of examples of why music artists would want to quit making music, at least as a primary means of making a living. Making money by making music is harder than ever, it seems, unless you are at the very top of the heap. The pitfalls for professional musicians seem to have no end. But, there is no shortage of people making music, and plenty who stay with it through thick and thin. I hinted at why that’s the case in our first episode, but never spelled it out. If you haven’t deciphered the clues yet, stick around and it will come together by the end of the episode. Along the way, you’ll hear from Dangermuffin, Joey Burns of Calexico, The Deer, Max Brown and Phil Bronstein from The War and Treaty, and Dan Fedoryka from Scythian, along with a lot of their music, too. In the early 80's my older brother came home from a Queen concert and was raving about this band called Billy Squier.  Of course, he picked up the album, and when he played it and when I listened to it, I immediately fell in love with their music. Needless to say, they really rocked our home in Brooklyn from that day on. Little did I know, that just a short few years later, I'd get the chance to befriend them and learn more about them and their music. Watching Alan play live was a true musical experience.    Alan St. Jon is a prolific keyboard player and is an invaluable member of the Billy Squier band, his unique backing vocals and very special keyboard sound is fresh and original.  Their album "Don't Say No" sold over six million copies. World renowned writer and critic Chuck Eddy's book entitled "The 500 Greatest Rock Albums in the Universe" rated Billy Squier's album "Don't Say No" at number 67 and "The Tale of the Tape" at number 122. Alan has a long list of accolades and has worked with musicians whether supporting their tour or recording on their albums, the list is too long to put down in words here, but, some of them are: Cher, Twisted Sister, Ronnie Spector, Foreigner, Ted Nugent, Phoebe Snow, Brian Setzer, Alice Cooper, Tommy Shaw, Iggy Pop, Cinderella, Michael Bolton, Fiona, Paul Young, Peter Wolf, Leslie West, Desmond Child, Elliot Easton, John Entwistle and more. His extensive recording experience has enabled him to work side by side with a number of Grammy Award winning producers such as Jack Douglas who produced Aerosmith and John Lennon, Andy Johns of the Led Zepplin fame, Mac who produced several Queen albums and Desmond Child who produced Michael Bolton, Bon Jovi and Cher. Alan latest chapter of his life now includes being an author and illustrator of a children's book series called:  "The Adventures of Moo Moo and the Furry Slippers" a series of children's books to help kids face the daily challenges of life. Glad you could stop by -- come on in, sit back, relax and enjoy the show. Alan's Tweetable with regards to being a musician/artist - Tweet it out Yo! That’s the conclusion I’m left with after going through the applications for our junior support programmer position. Quit! #40: Getting Through the Door – Marco.orgOne thing irritated me, though: it sounds like his assumption is that job postings need not list the position’s salary or a salary range, which should instead be negotiated in the interview. When I was job-hunting, this always drove me nuts.
