He emphasizes the importance of understanding leadership's priorities and building consensus, even when different metrics and priorities exist across functions. About the guest Christopher Mael has been the Director of Sales and Operations Planning for Precor subsidiary Peloton and the fitness space for the last five years. Connect with Christopher Mael Key takeaways- Make alignment meetings the most enjoyable part of the month by facilitating difficult conversations and bringing diverse perspectives together - Build consensus and align perceptions by creating space for honest conversations and understanding leadership's priorities - Address misconceptions about alignment, as it is not a given and can prevent teams from being on the same page Quotes"The biggest misconception about alignment is that it exists most of the time. You get into a meeting and people think they're all on the same page, and they might even be grumpy, like, why are we even having this meeting?" -Christopher Mael Recommended Resource Books- "Fundamentals of Demand Planning and Forecasting" by Chamal Jain - "Demand Management Best Practices" by George Palmatier and Colin Crum Journals- Journal of Business Forecasting by Institute of Business Planning and ForecastingConnect with Christopher Mael | Follow us on LinkedIn | Website
TITLE: Green Building and Sustainability Leader John Harrison (Returning Guest) John Harrison, FAIA, RDI, LEED Fellow. John is a sustainability innovator and licensed architect with extensive and diverse experience in both project and enterprise level certifications and design standards. He is one of the world's foremost experts on the global application of sustainable strategies at scale and utilizes his expertise in sustainable architecture, engineering and construction to enable organizations to reach unprecedented goals. John is a pioneer in the evolution and implementation of multiple LEED rating systems; as an early adopter for the original 1998 LEED pilot, the first commercial interiors rating system, and the LEED retail and volume build pilots. While at Starbucks, he co-authored the company's LEED for Retail Volume Build Program and led the execution team responsible for sustainable strategies and LEED certifications. With over 1,600 certified stores in 22 different countries/territories and all 50 US states, the program is recognized as the most successful green building program of its kind in the world. In private architectural practice, John spent 13 years at Mithun in Seattle working with a variety of sustainably driven retail, commercial and institutional clients including: Recreational Equipment Incorporated (REI), Precor, Miraval Resort and Spa and the IslandWood Environmental Learning Center. IslandWood was one of the first five LEED Gold certifications in the world and an American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on the Environment (COTE) Top Ten Award winner. For the outdoor retailer REI, John executed more than five dozen sustainable core stores, in addition to flagship projects in Bloomington, MN and Tokyo, Japan. With John's leadership, the REI building portfolio was elevated with scalable core standards based on sustainable strategies explored in flagship projects resulting in some of the first LEED ID+C Retail Projects ever certified. John is a dedicated environmental advocate who has donated thousands of hours, through multiple channels at local, regional, national and international levels. Through outreach, service and education, he has elevated the sustainability knowledge of building industry professionals, provided board leadership for ecologically focused nonprofits and helped develop environmental education for the next generation of leaders. He currently serves on the AIA COTE Advocacy Task Force, the Greenbuild Advisory Board and is board vice president for Northwest Natural Resource Group (NNRG), which is a regional non-profit focused on responsible forest practices and FSC certifications. Prior to his service with NNRG, John was board president for the environmental restoration and youth leadership development organization EarthCorps. John is a nationally and internationally recognized speaker on sustainability at scale and has led presentations to building professionals on subjects related to LEED volume certification and sustainability at the national AIA convention, multiple Greenbuild conferences and a variety of other industry events. Show Highlights Navigating global sustainability standards and challenges of working with different sustainability standards across countries. Importance of adapting to local codes and practices while maintaining global sustainability goals. Examples of projects in various countries, luxury retailers, and their unique challenges. The future of green building with a focus on carbon reduction and human health in building design. The need for generative design and inclusive leadership in the green building movement. Importance of addressing existing building stock and portfolio-driven solutions. John's collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to projects in his career. Exposure to sustainable materials and practices Early adoption of sustainable practices and materials. REI flagship store in Seattle. Challenges and successes in certifying over 1600 Starbucks stores globally. Collaboration with USGBC and GBCI to develop and refine the LEED volume program. Impact of his work on colleagues and the broader green building community “The other thing I think is thematic and necessary is that we can build a lot of really cool, perfect buildings and it takes a lot of effort and maybe they use very little water and no energy off the grid, but it doesn't account for the vast majority of the housing stock and the business stock and the office stock and the retail stock. The portfolio driven solutions are going to be another thing that is going to continue to drive the industry. It's like how do I take a massive machine and make it 20% better, because that 20% represents a whole heck of a lot of carbon and other negative impacts.” -John Harrison “I think it's more about the ripple effect. The ripple effect of green building projects is pretty cool, and totally quantifiable. It's like basic math and something people understand, the ripple effect with people that you either influenced or helped along the way or they helped you along the way and what they've become and where they've gone.” -John Harrison Show Resource and Information Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES GBES is excited our membership community is growing. Mauro takes us through the unique premise of his company, which offers a trifecta of modes: learning, playing for clubs, and pure competition. Mauro is an innovative entrepreneur, and product designer specializing in cutting-edge materials and durable hardware. Dedicated to pushing the limits of product design, Frota has been experimenting with bio-materials such as cactus leaves for exterior components and vegan leather for the outside of the bag. His commitment to durability and performance has led to the development of 5 to 10 different product prototypes, and his ultimate goal is to create hardware that meets the extreme standards of high-performance athletes, including MMA fighter Francis Ngannou, known for his record-breaking strike power. His ambitious expansion plans include 20 new units across Portugal, Spain, Brazil, and the US. He also shares insights into their cutting-edge AI technology, impressive collaborations with top-tier institutions and their journey toward making BHOUT kickboxing studios a global phenomenon. Regarding what BHOUT can do, Frota states, ". . . It's very unique. Everything that is tangible in a real fight, we can measure it. We can measure the number of strikes, the accuracy, exertion, and power. We can even measure technique and compare it with a pre-trained biomechanical model. All this is is transformed into points . . . which plays into the gaming aspect." Key themes discussed Benefits of working for Precor and entrepreneurial mindset. Steve Jobs on product design and collaboration. Started in B2B, product tested extensively. Opposite of Peloton or Tonal. Few equipment brands have retail and studios. Universe bringing industry together through technology and competition. Revenue generated in Europe comparable to SOLIDCORE model in USA. A few key takeaways: 1. Mauro's company has ingeniously blended the gaming industry with physical exercise through their innovative product. Their exer-game platform transforms workouts into engaging, competitive experiences. 2. Mauro shared his inspiring journey of translating a dream about a kickboxing space into a thriving business. His background in martial arts fueled his passion for making combat sports accessible to the masses through advanced technology. 3. The company has ambitious expansion strategies, with plans to open 20 new units across Portugal, Spain, Brazil, and the US. They aim to scale both franchise and corporate-owned locations, potentially including a presence in New York City. 4. The AI technology developed by Mauro's team is a core strength of the company, attracting high-profile clients like LinkedIn and Marriott Hotels. Collaborations with the University of Lisbon indicate a promising future for extending their product's reach. 5. Mauro detailed the development of a new product line featuring four prototypes constructed from bio-materials like cactus leaves and environmentally friendly water bladders, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability. The product has proven very successful in business-to-business settings and is already a top performer in a Portuguese club, showcasing its profitability and strong market reception. Neljän miljardin euron liikevaihdon viime vuonna tehnyt, kaksinumeroisesti kasvava kansainvälinen kuluttajatuoteyhtiö, jonka pääkonttori on Helsingissä. Osake listattuna New Yorkin pörssissä NYSE:ssä. Divestoinneista puhdistettuna liikevaihto on tuplaantunut viidessä vuodessa. Erityisesti kasvua on haettu ja saatu Kiinasta, jonka osuus Amer Sportsin liikevaihdosta on kasvanut lähes viidesosaan. Brändeistä suurimmaksi on buustattu teknisiä vaatteita valmistava kanadalainen Arc'teryx. ”Kaksi isoa transformaatiota on mennyt läpi yhtiön. Ne olivat käynnissä jo silloin 2018–2019, mutta nyt on laitettu ihan uutta vaihdetta kehiin”, Amer Sportsin viestintäjohtaja Anu Sirkiä kertoo Karon Grillissä. Ensinnä Amer Sports on uudistanut toimintamallinsa brändivetoiseksi. Toiseksi yhtiö on ottanut kuluttajat entistä paremmin omiin näppeihinsä: suoramyynnin osuus on kasvanut vauhdikkaasti. Grillissä käydään läpi perustelut näille strategisille valinnoille ja selvitetään, millaisia oikein ovat Amer Sportsin brändit. S-Pankin sijoitusjohtaja Mika Leskinen on valittu ainoana suomalaisena Onalytican muodostaman maailman 50 tärkeimmän ESG-vaikuttajan listalle. On this week's episode of the Escape Your Limits podcast, we are joined Paul Byrne, an innovative leader whose focus on progression and innovation has been instrumental in shaping the fitness industry as we know it. Today, Paul is a Partner at Harrison Co, a consumer-focused investment bank helping clients make the right strategic business decisions to capitalize on the rapidly changing consumer economy. Recently the company released a report exploring ‘The Impact and Opportunities of GLP-1s for the Fitness and Wellness Industry'. In this podcast we dive into the detail, drawing on Paul's extensive firsthand industry experience to understand how fitness operators can optimize the introduction of these new ‘miracle' weight loss drugs. Paul is perfectly placed to comment, thanks to his extensive experience of driving innovation and growth in the fitness industry. Over the course twenty years, Paul transformed Precor from a ‘one trick pony' into a multi-product world renowned fitness company over the course of a twenty-year period. In addition to bringing to market iconic equipment innovations including the elliptical (EFX®) and the adaptive motion trainer (AMT), during his time as President, Paul also kick-started the gym floor technology revolution with the introduction of Precor's Preva - a personalized fitness technology providing tailored workouts, popular apps and live tv to cardio machine users. There are few people who know more about the need to adapt to changing market conditions or the value in keeping a head of the curve with products and services relevant to the ever-changing needs and wants of the consumer. In this podcast, Paul talks about: The rationale behind the report. Defining GLP-1s – how they work, what benefits they deliver. How GLP-1s can be accessed. The disruption GLP-1s will cause to the fitness, wellness, weight loss and other industries. Whether GLP-1 use will drive more or less people to gyms. The need for gyms to adapt to accommodate GLP-1 users. A call for specialist coaches who understand GLP-1s. The fusion of fitness and wellness with traditional healthcare. The global adoption of GPL-1s. Paul Byrne is the former President of Precor. He's also a forward-thinking innovator who’s the reason every gym in America has an elliptical machine. Under his leadership, he transformed Precor into a $350 million-dollar global supplier of home and commercial fitness equipment and was a key asset in its recent acquisition by Peloton. Today, he serves as an industry advisor and is the author of two powerful prediction reports that will change the game for the health and wellness sector and continue pushing the entire industry to innovate. What does the future look like for manufacturers? Where is the boutique segment headed? How do you go about being successful in an overly saturated consumer space? Paul has the answers.
Sal has been in the industry since 1979, first as a club owner and then in 1984 when he moved to selling equipment. "You have to put yourself in the position of the customer . . . you have to see what's happening in the field and need boots on the ground. You need to see what customers are doing!" he states. He recently returned from his first 6 day road trip post-COVID and brings good news! He gives his take on the current "temperature" of the industry, some positives that have resulted from the pandemic (adaptation to tech/virtual), and reports on trends emerging inside the clubs. In a notable positive development, many of his customers are raising their prices as "the race to the bottom doesn't do anybody any good." He chats about his excitement around the sale of Precor to Peloton, opines on where the industry is heading, and more! This timely, bullish podcast from an industry veteran is a must listen--especially now as things continue to open up! Click here to view transcript.

Peloton has acquired Precor for around $420 million, which will expand the capacity and manufacturing of in-home cycling equipment to meet the growing demand from Peloton users. After years of failure with making DirecTV viable, AT&T is looking to shed the service from their books as they seek bids to take over the cable offerings. As most 2021 conferences are heading, CES will be an all-digital event featuring plenty of executives and hundreds of tracks for attendees. With the holidays days and weeks away, Zoom and other video conferencing services are confident they can meet the online demand as families and friends shift to gathering online to celebrate with one another.
President-Elect Joe Biden publicly receives vaccination; Peleton acquires Precor; Tesla officially joins the S&P 500; DogeCoin reaches $570 million valuation; Seth Kirkpatrick reports.

One Powerful Quote: 15:58: “People buy from those they like and they trust. And I think as the career has evolved, when you can carry over those relationships…that is to me as the ultimate complement that people have stayed with me, with the brands that I sell, because I honestly won’t sell them something if I wouldn’t buy it myself. I really believe that you have to really want and believe in the product that you sell, and I think that transparency or trust is so critical especially now more than ever.” Bullet Points (w/ timestamps) - Highlighting Key Topics Discussed: 3:25: Bryan starts the show by asking Sal about his inspiration for creating his weekly update sessions on the top industry takeaways. 8:20: Bryan inquires with Sal about his thoughts of his professional career. 10:49: Bryan asks Sal how he has adapted to servicing customers and their needs in the industry space.
