In the final episode of Season 2, Charles welcomes Jim Turbert, an American communication technologist and podcaster residing in Rotterdam. Jim reflects on his first concert at age 13, where Ringo Starr's performance left a lasting impression, partly thanks to his music-loving uncle who influenced his musical tastes. He recounts various memorable concerts, including a powerful Afghan Wigs show in Boston, where lead singer Greg Dooley's storytelling made the performance unforgettable, even despite later learning Dooley's on-stage declaration of being on acid was untrue.Jim shares his appreciation for technically proficient artists like Mike Watt and Nels Cline, recounting a particularly electrifying performance that displayed exceptional guitar skills. His experiences underscore the importance of venue acoustics and crowd energy, such as how silence and attention at a Sigur Rós concert added to the immersive quality of the show. Conversely, he describes a disappointing Eagles concert during their 'When Hell Freezes Over' tour due to multiple breaks and inflated egos.A standout anecdote involves Jim losing a shoe while crowd-surfing at a Nirvana concert, only to have Kurt Cobain toss it backstage, leaving him to navigate the chilly New England night unshod. Amid these personal stories, Jim also touches on the broader implications of concert experiences, including nostalgic reflections on hitchhiking back from a Sonic Youth concert with friends and the pure joy of witnessing an early White Stripes performance in a frat house setting. In addition to sharing concert stories, Jim speaks about his podcast, 'Feel Free to Deviate,' which delves into people's career paths and their relationships with success. The podcast captures various personal and professional journeys, underscoring Jim's curiosity and communication skills.BANDS: Afghan Wigs, Aerosmith, Beatles, Black Crows, Blackfoot, Breeders, Clarence Clemens, Deep Purple, Dire Straits, Dr. John, The Eagles, Joe Walsh, Led Zeppelin, Living Color, Lounge Acts, Mason Ruffner, Ministry, Minutemen, Nazareth, Nick Cave, Nils Lofgren, Otoboke Beaver, Porno for Pyros, Radiohead, Ringo Starr, Rolling Stones, Sigur Rós, Soundgarden, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Sonic Youth, Ten Years After, the Doors, U2, Walter Trout, White Stripes, Willie Preston.VENUES: T. Ringo Starr is on the road! In August 1989 the All Star Band tour rolled across North America, featuring the talents of the many legendary rockers sharing the stage with Ringo...along with some special guests to boot. Chief amongst those special guests was none other than the boss himself, Bruce Sprringsteen, who joined two of his fellow E-Street Band members on stage before a crowd of star-struck fans. Ringo's comeback tour was a rousing success, but the ghosts of his past would continue to dog the former Beatle. This time in the form of a lawsuit from Chips Moman, alleging that Starr's drunken Nashville sessions were fit for public consumption. Ringo disagreed. Hosted on Acast. It's summer of 1989 and for the first time in history not one but TWO former Beatles are on tour! And for the newly sober Ringo Starr, these live shows were a helpful reminder of his skills as an artist and his importance to the world of music -- hitting the road with an all-star band of friends and like-minded creatives for a triumphant North American leg in July. Joe Walsh, Nils Lofgren, Dr. John, Billy Preston, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Clarence Clemons, Jim Kelter and a host of special guests and rave reviews accompanied this All-Star Band on tour, and reinvigorated a wave of Beatles nostalgia...just in time for Paul McCartney to hit the road himself... With Paul McCartney's newest LP Flowers in the Dirt climbing the charts and reigniting a wave of critical praise for Macca's music, Parlophone and Capitol release the second single slated from the album: This One. A rare glimpse into Paul's emotional state, the song captures a conciliatory tone of regret and longing...albeit alongside Paul's trademark deflection lurking around every corner. As the McCartneys dug in on promotion for the single, Ringo Starr had some big news of his own: his first ever concert tour! Ringo Starr and the All Star Band will pair Ringo with friends and musicians for a North American victory lap of hits, and the freshly sober Starr was ready to put rubber to the road on the idea starting later in the summer of 1989... Interview by Erin Eddy,Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons recently dropped their new album Kings Of The Asylum. If you're not familiar with the name Phil Campbell, then you're not a big enough Motorhead fan. The former guitarist of one of rock and roll's most notorious bands has spent the last few years building up The Bastard Sons, a band he has formed with his three sons Todd, Dane and Tyla. When charismatic and legendary Motorhead front man Lemmy passed away in late 2015, it was the end of an era. But with music coursing through his veins, Phil Campbell was not ready to set down the guitar and retire just yet. With his ‘bastard sons' on board, the band that was originally assembled mainly for fun has well and truly taken off.HEAVY spent some time this week chatting with Todd Campbell, one of the band's guitarists.“A few years before Lemmy passed, we started playing doing covers mostly, as like a party band sort of thing, doing little mini tours. We were called the All Star Band at that point,” Todd explained to HEAVY. “We just slowly morphed into The Bastard Sons doing original material and it's just a good outlet for Phil now, now that he doesn't have Motorhead.”Once the ball was rolling with The Bastard Sons, things gathered momentum relatively quickly and the band has been busy releasing music, as well as playing hectic festival circuits around Europe for the past two summers now.Kings Of The Asylum is the band's third studio album and it's first with new vocalist Joel Peters.“It just felt really natural with Joel, the fans have really taken to him. Full steam ahead, basically!” Todd smiles.Kings Of The Asylum is out now via Nuclear Blast Records.Listen to the full interview now to hear about what it was like for Todd growing up aroundMotorhead, what it's like to be in a “family band”, what to expect of the new album and more!

Topic: It's Still Rock n Roll to Me!   Guest: David Fishof   Bio:   Whether he's producing a tour, assembling an All-Starr band with Ringo Starr, or writing a best-selling book, there's one thing David Fishof is always doing: dreaming. Hailed as one of the most creative and innovative entertainment producers in the world, Fishof has been responsible for some of the most original, successful, and exciting live shows ever brought to the stage. But of all the shows he's put on over his 40-plus year career, there's one production that stands out from all the rest: Rock ‘N' Roll Fantasy Camp. After years of good fortune working with veteran rockers like Roger Daltrey, Ringo Starr, The Monkees, Levon Helm, Joe Walsh, the late Jack Bruce and so many more superstars, Fishof decided it was time to share his experiences with rock fans around the world. And so, in 1997, he debuted the rock camp—a place where regular people can reconnect with their passion for music alongside the most famous names in the business. A quarter century later, the camp has given more than 7,000 folks from around the world a chance to live the rock star dream. Campers get to meet and jam with their musical idols—including Joe Perry, Roger Daltrey, Gene Simmons, Nancy Wilson, and the late Jeff Beck—in some of the most legendary venues on Earth, from Abbey Road Studios in London, to the Whisky a Go Go in Hollywood, to the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas. In addition to founding Rock ‘N' Roll Fantasy Camp, Fishof's career highlights include reuniting The Monkees for their blowout reunion tour in 1986, and producing Dirty Dancing: The Concert Tour, Dick Clark's American Bandstand Tour, the Happy Together Tours, Classic Superfest, American Gladiators Live Tour, and the British Rock Symphony (which featured Roger Daltrey, Alice Cooper, and Jon Anderson). Fishof also worked with Ringo Starr to create the All Starr Band, and over its fifteen-year existence, Fishof has produced eight All Star Band tours. In January 2023, Fishof announced a development deal with Fox for a comedy TV show called “Rock Camp” following a down on his luck rock star, who after a series of screw-ups, begrudgingly goes to teach at Rock Camp — a summer camp where anyone can live out their fantasy of shredding next to their favorite rockers — in order to satisfy a court mandate and save his reputation. Fishof joins producers Steve Basilone (“The Goldbergs”) and Jeff Rowe on the endeavor. 1) Torah Inspiration   2) Pride in Family & Judaism   3) Fame & Fortune   4) Pivot to Music   5) Fantasy Camp   6) Reflection     and so much more!

John Waite Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson John, no Waite-ing! Hot on the heels of his just-dropped doc, the ridiculously talented insanely handsome activist, humanist, and gifted storyteller, made time for us this morn prior to his concert tonight in Atlanta, which is being recorded for a Live album no less. As if Georgians didn't have enough to celebrate this day. I certainly did. It was more than worth waking up at the crack of dawn after watching the Warnock runoff victory speech last night and then John Waite - The Hard Way (streaming as of yesterday on Prime), for another opportunity to sit down with this treasured new friend. As has come to be fashion, the conversation exceeded all expectations. Speaking of fashion, this forever stylish, nattily well-dressed man was interviewed for the doc for four days, as was, without ego, his emotions as real and raw as his unusual for him casual appearance, relinquishing all control of the shoot and the final product to the filmmakers. We talked at length about what made it into the film, and perhaps more interestingly, what didn't. There's a book there, and we encouraged him to write it. Although the doc, shot during the lockdown, speaks of John's passion for the road, the popstar before us this day spoke more of what his life might look like as enters the next phase. We talked The Beatles, their influence, and then the reality of playing with one. Being a part of Ringo's All-Star Band and the mixed blessing of it, and how a walk-by with Paul was just too much of a good thing. We touched on the Babys, Bad English, but we focused on John, his childhood in Lancaster, and his perhaps not too far in the future, return there. All-in-all, it was a thoughtful, provocative, evocative hour in the company of an extraordinary man, ridiculously easy on the eyes, ears, soul, and heart. I can't Waite for more. 181. It's a sad day down here in the Motorbilly Studios as we mourn along with the entire world... saying "goodbye" to legendary 50's rock n' roll & rockabilly superstar Jerry Lee Lewis who passed this recent Friday at the age of 87. R.I.P. "Killer"! The Ferriday Fireball was all kinds of amazing throughout his seven decades of incendiary performing & recording. We'll take time in the Tuesday night WCBN "Go Kat, GO" to revisit some favorite tracks from Mr. Lewis' famed catalog and even mix in some significant covers from contemporary rockers who celebrated his music. There's also NEW records to hi-lite tonite from Lucky Jones, Reckless Ones, Bloodshot Bill, Whiskey Jean & The Chasers, Jane Rose & The Deadends, Seatbelt, The Ichi-Bons and Marco DiMaggio's All Star Band. Reel in shock as we yell "Murder!" in a crowded theater -spinning homicidal hits around an exclusive LIVE interview with local Dexter Community Players' director/producer & actor: Abigail Smith Briggs! You can see the theatrical production of CLUE this weekend (Nov. 4,5 & 6th) & the Columbus Hall in Dexter, MI! Celebrate Native American Heritage Month with a set of Indian-themed rockers, too. The World's Greatest Pink Floyd show. Music has been the center of Jeremy Bosch's life since he has memory. Growing up in his native Puerto Rico, he played percussion and sang at his local church , while his family instructed him in a variety of classic legends such as Barry White, Earth Wind & Fire, Miles Davis, Hector Lavoe, Chicago and Tony Bennett, for Name some. He soon manifested his musical talent: at the young age of 17, Jeremy received a full scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music. It was during these years of training that Bosch had his first professional experience as an artist, along with the famous Puerto Rican percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo and his All Star Band. It was there Bosch knew he was destined for a career in music. It has been a long and transformative road since Bosch's summers in Berklee. He has performed worldwide in concerts and festivals in Europe, South America, North America and the Caribbean. He has been the lead vocalist of the acclaimed Spanish Harlem Orchestra and also shared the stage with the legendary salsa player Eddie Palmieri as vocalist for his band. “Precious Time" The Sheffield born Paul Carrack's voice is one of the worlds great superpowers. Carrack got his start at 19 playing keyboards in Warm Dust for a handful of albums. From there, he formed ACE who had the massive international hit "How Long." After they broke up in 1977 he played with Frankie Miller and joined Roxy Music as their keyboardist. He put out a solo album in 1980, then joined Squeeze who had a rather massive hit with “Tempted" that featured Carrack on lead vocals. Around the same time he had a band called Noise to Go with Nick Lowe. That band became Nick Lowe and His Cowboy Outfit who not only put out two albums, they were John Hiatt's backing band for Side Two of his Riding With The King record. Carrack did session work for the Pretenders and The Smiths for their debut album then he joined Mike and the Mechanics, logged a few seismic hits with them—you know, "The Living Years" and "Silent Running." He became a member of Roger Waters' touring band, put out another solo record, had a hit with "Don't Shed A Tear"—then formed a band with Rupert Hine, rejoined Squeeze for the Some Fantastic Place record, had a song he co-wrote with Don Felder and Timothy B Schmitt of The Eagles covered by the Eagles and that track ended up being the most played song in the United States in 1995. Carrack kept up his solo career, but still had time to join Ringo Starr's All Star Band, collaborate with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and join Eric Clapton's band. Over the years he's also played with Simply Red, BB King, Elton John and the list goes on and on. There's actually a great BBCFour documentary about Paul called "The Man With The Golden Voice.” Paul's new album One On One is his 18th solo album and it's fabulous. A stirring collection that's about as soulfully precise as it gets, Carrack's voice is filled with a timeless blend of warmth and groove and this album proves that time can't touch him. He sounds as effortless and as affecting as ever. It's yet another winning entry into a pretty flawless discography. In this conversation, Carrack talks to Alex about staying creative during a pandemic, what he learned about leading his own band from watching Clapton, and why his son think he's cool for playing on The Smiths' debut. He also talks about his new album, wanting to make a country record, and how Elvis Costello had the idea for him to sing “Tempted.” www.paulcarrack.net www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

A chat with award winning blues artist and The Voice finalist Laith Al-Saadi as well as fans Jaime, Jane, Ron, Sylvia, Jerry, Jodi, Gale, Tobi, and Greg. The fans share their stories of discovering Laith through The Voice and local performances in Ann Arbor. We discuss our amazement at Laith’s riff weaving abilities by layering songs within songs. We chat about the influence of the Beatles. And Laith shares the story of meeting his guitar hero, Joe Walsh  Becoming a fan of Laith Al-SaadiRon and Sylvia became instant fans of Laith after hearing him perform on The Voice. They collected all of the performances that were recorded and available on iTunes. In fact, they are such devoted fans that their sons call them Laith Al-Saadi groupies. They met Laith at a show in Indianapolis and have seen him a total of seven times including a drive-in show at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts this past July. They have also seen him up close at the City Winery in Chicago. Laith loves those venues as they are great listening rooms.Sylvia and Ron would love to see the YouTube video of Laith’s blind audition on the show. Sadly, the show only keeps the videos up for a couple of years. If anyone from The Voice is listening, how about releasing the videos of past performances for fans to enjoy at any time?Jane and her husband met Laith back around 2008 when he was growing out his most awesome beard. They became fans not only of his music, but of Laith himself. Jane shared how kind and friendly Laith has been over the years. Jane and her husband would see Laith as often as they could at the local venues in Ann Arbor. Laith even played at Jane’s daughter’s wedding drawing folks from a couple other weddings being held at the same venue.Weaving Riffs and Tower RecordsJerry and Jodi caught Laith in Summerville a few years ago. While there are many things they love about Laith, one thing that stands out is his ability to interject a medley of other songs while playing another. When Jerry and Jodi saw Laith, he threw in a piece of “La Villa Strangiato'' by Rush as part of a cover of Tom Petty’s “Running Down A Dream”. Jerry admits he and Jodi aren’t always on the same musical page, but they agree on the phenomenal performances of Laith Al-Saadi.Laith shared that he is a huge Rush fan having seen them 17 times. He had a fanboy moment during a meet and greet with Rush during their R40 tour. This led us into reminiscing about waiting in line for tickets or album releases at Tower Records. The Beatles and Laith’s Journey into GuitarLaith’s journey into guitar began with wanting to sing along with his friends playing Beatles music. The portability of the guitar offered a way to sit around with friends and play the music they love. Starting out with a blue Magnum Explorer copy and a Yamaha Budokan amp, Laith called up his buddy on the phone and jammed. He couldn’t play a lick back then, but he sure can now.Laith’s affinity for stringed instruments took off at Community High in Ann Arbor, where he excelled in bass guitar. After a couple of years at Western he transferred to the University of Michigan where he double majored in bass and guitar. At Michigan, Laith played in the big band studying under Paul Keller. He also had the opportunity to study with greats such as Rufus Reed, Edgar Meyer, and the legendary Ray Brown.Photographic MemoriesJaime is astounded with Laith’s ability to remember each meeting with fans including where and when. She asked Laith if he has a photographic memory? Laith laughs saying that he isn’t sure it is actually photographic, he does have a great memory for music. He can play a song in his head and then translate it on the guitar. As Laith relates, songs are the short stories of music.Laith’s Key Influence and Favorite Laith tunesJaime had another question about what one artist has influenced or inspired Laith the most. Since Laith can remember, The Beatles have been a pivotal influence in his life and music. His favorite album is Abbey Road. The message of love resonates with him to this day, particularly “The End”.After sharing a thought about the final chord in the Beatles “The End”, Jerry turned our discussion to what everyone’s favorite Laith song is. A very tough question where the answer evolves over time or changes based on the day you ask. Jerry loves “Complete Disgrace”. It is a tough call for Ron, but he digs “What It Means”. Sylvia was quick with “Should’ve Questioned Her Motivations”. Jaime’s favorite song by Laith is “Gone”.Friday Nights with Laith and more concert memories.Since the beginning of the pandemic, Laith has been livestreaming his Quarantine sessions on Friday nights. Jerry and Jodi haven’t missed one. Ron and Sylvia ironically missed one livestream as they were visiting in Honor, Michigan. This sparked a conversation about the Cherry Hut in Beulah. Laith spent summer vacations as a kid in the area.Talking about the livestreams, the conversation turned to the great show Laith had at Otus Supply which Ron and Sylvia caught on the boardwalk vacationing in Michigan. Thinking back, Sylvia remembered being up front with Laith and his band at Lone Oak Vineyard in Grass Lake, MI. Laith mentioned that he misses playing that venue as it felt just like being in someone’s living room. Jerry was quick to offer up his living room in New Hampshire once all this blows over.Tobi shared that she met Laith at The Write-Off Room in Woodland, CA and then later at the Maui Sugar Mill in Tarzana, CA with Geoff Pearlman on bass. Geoff is a hell of a guitar player as well and is featured on the soundtrack to Echo In The Canyon which documents the music that emerged from Laurel Canyon in the 70’s.The Voice and Joe WalshJaime asked if Laith had made any lasting contacts from his appearance on The Voice. Laith mentioned that he became good friends with Owen Danoff and Ryan Quinn. They shared a love of spicy food and would meet for dinner while sequestered during taping of the show. The security was strict and getting good takeout was a blessing. The highlight of Laith’s experience on The Voice was performing with his guitar hero Joe Walsh. Laith never expected to get as far as he did. However, playing with Joe was a dream come true. He was able to later get on stage with Joe when he played at Pine Knob (ok..DTE Music). According to Laith, Joe is the nicest guy and he was thrilled that he contacted him to play after The Voice.Ringo StarrIt Turns out that Joe Walsh’s wife Marjorie is sisters with Ringo Starr’s wife Barbara Bach. We imagined what holiday dinners are like. We also dreamed about being able to witness Ringo’s All Star Band with Joe, Nils Lofgren, Gregg Rolie, Steve Lukather, Levon Helm, and Jim Keltner. Laith has a new album coming out in 2021 which includes Jim Keltner on drums. Jim mentioned that he loved the last record he worked on with Laith called Real. This prompted Laith to get Jim involved in his latest project. It turns out that Jim and Ringo are good friends. Laith asked Jim while they were in the studio if he would pass along a copy of Real to Ringo. Jim said sure. This means that the kid influenced to become a musician by the Beatles, may have his own music playing in Ringo’s house right now. What a trip.Traveling to see LaithSince we can’t travel right now, we share our dream of where we would like to see Laith play. Tobi wants to see Laith at the new Write-Off Room when it opens. Laith has yet to play there and it sounds like Tobi has connections. Jodi would love to see Laith play in Nashville since they have not yet visited this fine music city. Jerry would keep it local to New Hampshire in his backyard. Ron and Sylvia would love to see Laith at the Ann Arbor Blues Festival or The Blind Pig. Greg gave another shout out for Nashville. Specifically, BB King’s. He would also like to see Laith in his hometown of Coldwater at JT’s. Finally, Jaime would like to see Laith at a campfire anywhere in the U.S.A. However, if she could pick one place it would be to see Laith in New Orleans. As New Orleans inspired the tremendous song “Gone” and other songs from his album, Real. Sounds like a road-trip is in order.Dig into all the intriguing stories, laughs, and much more in this episode of Fans With Bands with Laith Al-Saadi. We hope you enjoy it! This second studio album is the one that would put Billy Squier at the top of the arena rock world in 1981.  Don't Say No would produce Squier's first breakthrough single, “The Stroke,” a critique of the music industry, and the album would continue to contribute singles and AOR hits as it remained on the Billboard album charts for over 2 years.Billy Squier got his start in the Boston music scene in the late 60's, playing in locally successful groups through the 70's, and releasing a moderately successful solo album in the spring of 1980.  Squier approached Brian May of Queen about producing his second album, but May had scheduling conflicts that kept him from working with Squier.  However, Brian May suggested Squier work with Reinhold Mack who had produced “The Game” for Queen.  Billy Squier would later continue his connection with Queen, opening for the band during their 1982 tour.  Billy Squier wrote his own songs and was a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, piano, and percussion.Squier left the music scene in the early 90's with the advent of grunge, but he often tours with Ringo Star as a part of his All Star Band.  He also does one-off concerts for charity, but spends much of his time in New York City with his wife. Are you ready for some early 80's arena rock?  Don't Say No! In the DarkThis song was the second single from the album, and the lead song for the album.  Some think that this song is about lovers keeping their cheating relationships secret.  This album is considered to bridge the hard rock sounds of the 70's with heavy metal of the 80's.  It has a Zeppelinesque feel to it.Don't Say NoThe title track is the last song on the album, and a deeper cut that was never released as a single.  It has an interesting “fade in” effect to kick it off.My Kind of LoverWhile this third single narrowly missed the top 40 (it made it to number 45), it was heavily played at the time.  It has a pop sentiment to it, but is a pretty straightforward song about sex and chasing a woman.Lonely Is the NightSurprisingly, this song was not released as a single, and did not make Squier's greatest hits album.  It's about a guy watching streetwalkers.  It was the B-side of “In the Dark,” and received heavy air play on rock radio. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The theme to “Raiders of the Lost Ark”This classic adventure film starring Harrison Ford as Dr. Indiana Jones made its debut in the summer of 1981.  This iconic tune is instantly recognizable today. STAFF PICKS:I Missed Again  by Phil CollinsRob's staff pick is from “Face Value,” Phil Collins' debut solo album.  The original name of the song was "I miss you, babe," but the band convinced him to change the name and lighten it up.  "Would you say if I was wasting my time or did I miss again?  ...I think I missed again."All Those Years Ago by George HarrisonThis tribute to John Lennon was originally intended as a song for Ringo Starr, but George Harrison brought it back to himself after the death of Lennon the previous winter.  Brian brings us his favorite Beatle.  Ringo, John and Linda McCartney played on this song, the first time they all appeared on a song together since 1970. Snowblind   by StyxBruce's staff pick features baritone James Young and tenor Tommy Shaw trading lead singer duties in this song about the dangers of cocaine.  It also created a stir when some groups insisted that there were backward masking messages from the devil embedded in the track.  This upset the band, who would make an entire concept album about censorship with their next effort, “Kilroy Was Here.”Nether Street  by BodastWayne finishes us off with a song recorded by a prog rock group that broke up in 1969 when guitarist Steve Howe joined Yes.  You'll recognize the riff because it is embedded in Yes's “Starship Trooper.”  The album was not released until June 1981. LAUGH TRACK:The Spanish Inquisition by Mel BrooksThe comedy “History of the World, Part I” by Mel Brooks brought us one of the most politically incorrect musical numbers ever penned.  "The Inquisition! What a show!"

Everything Fab Four is a podcast focused on fun and intelligent stories about the enduring cultural influence of the Beatles. No other band, or popular entity for that matter, has had the world-wide impact the Beatles have. They are part of our human fabric, they created music that still brings people together, and just about everyone has their own “Beatles story” to tell. In each episode, renowned music historian, Beatles scholar, and author Kenneth Womack will host a special guest to share theirs. In Season 1, we'll hear from an eclectic slate of guests ranging from Toto guitarist Steve Lukather, who plays with Ringo's All-Star Band, and Hall & Oates co-founder John Oates to Broadway star Adam Pascal ("Rent") and genre-defying vocalist Dessa, member of the indie hip hop collective Doomtree. These conversations will be guided by our host Kenneth Womack, who literally wrote the encyclopedia on the Beatles (The Beatles Encyclopedia: Everything Fab Four), as well as a two-volume study on producer George Martin, and the bestselling book Solid State: The Story of Abbey Road and the End of the Beatles. This week I chat to singer-songwriter and Men at Work frontman Colin Hay about Chris Whitley's 'Dirt Floor'. We talk about the allure of the back to basics record, the appeal of living in oft-derided LA, discovering art that deeply affects you far into your career, code-switching as a Scot growing up in Australia and finding comfort in isolation. We also talk about Colin's favourite venues to play, what it's been like to play with Ringo and his All Star Band and writing the title track on Ringo's latest album, plus a bonus story about the time Paul McCartney did his dishes.

Rod Argent is the founding member, keyboardist, and driving force behind the legendary 1960s British Invasion band, The Zombies. Argent wrote the band’s best known classics, including the Top 10 single “Tell Her No” and the #1 hit “She’s Not There,” which Rolling Stone ranked at #297 on the list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. By the time The Zombies’ 1968 LP Odessey and Oracle was released, the group had disbanded. “Time of the Season” became a surprise hit from the album, however, reaching the Top 5 on the US charts. Over time, Odessey and Oracle has become a cult classic, and was ranked in the Top 100 Greatest Albums of All Time in both Rolling Stone and Mojo magazines. Rod went on to form the band Argent, scoring a Top 5 hit in 1972 with “Hold Your Head Up,” which he co-wrote with former Zombies bandmate Chris White. Additionally, the group recorded the original version of “God Gave Rock and Roll to You,” which was subsequently covered by KISS. After the demise of Argent, Rod threw himself into session work, playing piano on the Who’s classic single “Who Are You,” and working extensively with Andrew Lloyd Weber. He released a handful of solo projects, produced successful albums for artists such as Nanci Griffith and Joshua Kadison, and toured as a member of Ringo Starr’s All Star Band before re-forming the Zombies with original lead singer Colin Blunstone in the mid-2000s. His songs have been recorded by The Ventures, Dusty Springfield, Vanilla Fudge, The Mindbenders, Del Shannon, Santana, Steppenwolf, Uriah Heep, Juice Newton, Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews Band, Susanna Hoffs, Tom Petty, America, Mother Love Bone, Ronnie Spector, and others. The original lineup of The Zombies - Rod, lead singer Colin Blunstone, bassist Chris White, and drummer Hugh Grundy - have just released a career retrospective coffee table book called The Odessey. They’ll launch a tour this month in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the recording of Odessey and Oracle and will perform the full album in its entirety.
