One of the all time great bands, L7 fused laugh out loud humor with a caveman punk aggression that made them stand out like a blistered sore thumb against the L.A. hair metal landscape of the late ‘80s. But they were chicks, man — so rather than be spoken about in the same righteous breath as the Stooges or the Ramones, the members of L7 had to put up with inane questions about Vixen(?!?). No matter. As with most awesome things, L7 are still here and their influence looms larger than ever. On this episode we talk to co-founder Donita Sparks about Matthew Sweet covers, Epitaph records, the siren song of LA surf music, Slash records, Sub Pop, yacht rock, Rock For Choice, Milwaukee book makers, fights at Exit, John Waters, SMELL THE MAGIC, and we play the best round of what's the best ever!

American rock outfit L7 are just as relevant today as they were when they formed back in 1985. Never ones to shy away from confrontation or back down from their beliefs, L7 have survived hiatuses, member changes and the changing tide of opinion to emerge even stronger than before. Despite the constant state of turmoil that has managed to afflict daily life, L7 have endured, harnessing that anger and resentment into an undeniable force of music that presently sees the band back in Australia once more.HEAVY caught up with frontwoman Donita Sparks ahead of L7's first show of GOOD THINGS 2024 to find out more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

L7 were pioneers. Yes, there were all female rock bands before, but how many rocked as hard as they did with as much authenticity? Those four girls let it all hang out and walked it like they talked it. Success had to find them, they weren't going to play any games to find it. They finally broke through with 'Pretend We're Dead" off their third album, but it was hard keeping it all together and the band began to fracture soon after. For the last several years, the original members have reformed for a new album (2019's Scatter the Rats), several "victory lap" tours celebrating their legacy. Donita Sparks joins us this week to discuss the whole story including hanging out with Lemmy, Nick Cave and Butch Vig as well as filming Serial Mom with John Waters, the response to their 2016 documentary, and tons more. This conversation with Donita Sparks of L7 starts with a look back at the Alternative Nation Festival in 1995 and the band's connection with Australian audiences. We'll discuss the unique qualities of Donita's guitar tone, which echoes Tom Warrior from Celtic Frost's style with a punk twist, and delve into how this sound was honed over time. The conversation will touch on the band's distinctive groove, the process of riff-writing, and Donita's musical inspirations. We'll revisit the early reception of Nirvana's Nevermind and get Donita's perspective on The Prodigy's cover of the L7 cut, "Fuel My Fire." We clear up if Jennifer Finch ever played with Moby's band and whether Oliver Stone personally reached out for the "Natural Born Killers" soundtrack contribution. Reflecting on the 30th anniversary of the notorious 'Tampongate' at the Reading Festival, we'll discuss its place in the band's history. The interview will also cover the band's advocacy efforts through Rock for Choice and whether Donita still identifies with the feminist movement, followed by her views on current issues regarding transgender individuals in sports, prisons, and beauty pageants.

Interview by Erin EddyYou can't make a list of influential bands of 90s grunge without including L7.Formed in the late 80s, L7 were a crucial cog in the machine that was the grunge movement, pushing hair and glam metal aside to create a new branch on the tree of alternative music. The fact that they were an all-female band was only one of the things that made L7 stand out and be noticed. The energy and feistiness of their live shows was another. Their outspoken and unapologetic punk rock attitude, laced with sarcastic humour and wit, also caught people's attention. And of course, some of their memorable incidents on stage will be cemented in rock and roll history forever.Probably the most notable of the L7 stunts was a tampon-throwing incident at Reading Festival in 1992.“I needed to make lemonade out of lemons,” frontwoman Donita explains, of the time she retaliated to being pelted with mud by punters during L7's set. “That involved a live ammo tampon straight out of my body. That's what I did.”HEAVY was conscious of the fact that this incident, which happened 30-odd years ago now, may be one Donita is sick of discussing, but in fact, it was quite the opposite. The musician conveyed the story freely with a laugh and said, “Those incidents remain pretty funny and shocking and rad, and people check us out because of that stuff.”L7's relationship with the music industry was relatively turbulent, and labels lost interest with them when grunge ran its course. But L7 left a mark, and a devoted fan base was well and truly established, seeing the band remaining relevant throughout the years and continuing to produce music.Bricks Are Heavy was L7's third album, and the one that exposed them to audiences outside the US.Heading to Australia and New Zealand this December, L7 will be performing this landmark album front to back, as well as diving into their catalogue of other fan favourites.“Aussie fans really love rock and roll, they're really into good rock,” Donita states enthusiastically, “That (is what) we're looking forward to.”To gauge what to expect when L7 return to Australia, listen to the interview in its en

This week's guest on the podcast is Donita Sparks, a very talented musician, songwriter, and close friend of Lydia. She is the co-founder and lead vocalist of the legendary all-female rock band L7. With her unmistakable voice and fierce guitar skills, Donita has been a driving force in the rock scene for decades. Her dedication to social and environmental issues shines through in L7's upcoming single and video, Cooler than Mars, scheduled for release on September 12th. The song passionately urges humanity to prioritize the present and focus on urgent matters rather than becoming fixated solely on the allure of future life on Mars and space exploration. Beyond her work with L7, Donita collaborates with Lydia and other musicians in contributing to the Marianne Faithfull charity record. L7's momentum remains strong, with an extensive tour across the United States in September, followed by shows in South America throughout October and November, concluding in Australia in December. With shows selling out rapidly across all markets, Donita and L7 continue to leave an indelible mark on the music industry and beyond.

[This episode originally aired August, 2021.] Although Joan Jett has been called the “Godmother of punk,” this rocker's rise to super stardom came with plenty of twists and turns. From the time Joan picked up her first electric guitar at age 13 in 1971, she was met with the refrain that “girls don't play guitars”—and that they certainly don't play rock. Joan spent the rest of her life proving these naysayers wrong, founding one of the first all-girl rock bands at age 16 before skyrocketing to the top of the charts as the frontwoman of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. About the Narrator Donita Sparks is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, writer and actor. She first rose to fame with legendary all female American rock band, L7, which remains active to this day. Sparks was instilled at a young age with a keen sense of political and social activism. She, along with her bandmates, founded Rock for Choice, a pro-choice organization with the Feminist Majority Foundation producing numerous nationwide benefit concerts. She is particularly known for her raucous live performances and rebellious persona.   Credits Bad Reputation (Studio) by Joan Jett Courtesy of Blackheart Records Group, Inc Bad Reputation (Acoustic) by Joan Jett Courtesy of Blackheart Records Group, Inc Fake Friends by L7 Featuring Joan Jett Courtesy of Blackheart Records Group, Inc This podcast is a production of Rebel Girls and is based on the book series Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls. For the 30th anniversary of L7's breakthrough third album, BRICKS ARE HEAVY, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After L7 had released albums on venerable west coast indie labels, Epitaph and Sub Pop, they decided to go for major label distribution with their third album. Seminal Los Angeles label, Slash Records, allowed them more reach as well as a larger recording budget than ever before. After visiting their friends in Nirvana at Sound City during the recording of NEVERMIND, they met Butch Vig and decided he would be the right producer for their next album. In late 1991, they headed to Madison, Wisconsin to record at Butch Vig's Smart Studios, just as NEVERMIND was blowing up and changing the face of popular music. In this episode, Donita Sparks describes L7 in this pivitol moment when they were going from the underground to the mainstream. Sparks talks about gaining confidence with her songwriting, getting more specific with her lyrics and embracing her pop side more than ever before. The result was BRICKS ARE HEAVY, an album full of personal songs by Sparks, Suzi Gardner and Jennifer Finch that went on to become generational anthems. From the mind blowing place in the mainstream to major label guilt to using songwriting as revenge to getting the nod from Yoko Ono, we'll hear the stories around how the album came together.

Suzi Quatro and L7's Donita Sparks are iconic rockers who have each paved the way for generations of women in music. And on today's show — for the first time ever — they meet! To celebrate the theatrical release of the documentary Suzi Q, which Donita appears in, as well as the L7 doc L7: Pretend We're Dead and new LP Scatter The Rats, the two chop it up in a wide-ranging, rapid fire convo. They talk refusing to "do gender" when it comes to their music, while also knowing when to pull what they call the “female card” and charge a “pussy premium” for their work. We also hear about Suzi's astrological studies; Donita’s time-travel crush; Suzi’s life mantra — in lyrics — and what she's gonna do to get ready when it comes time for her to kick the bucket. Today's show was recorded at Elevate Studios in Hamburg by Jan Strehl, in Los Angeles by Ali Nikou, and at Hook and Fade Studios in Brooklyn by Mark Yoshizumi. The Talkhouse Podcast’s theme song was composed and performed by The Range.

London Calling: The Clash's Great Rebellion

The Opus is getting lost in the supermarket for its sixth season. The Clash were at a crossroads in 1979. The first wave of punk rock ended a year prior when the Sex Pistols called it quits, leaving the movement to explore new avenues, from New Wave to hardcore, and the band to wonder, What are we gonna do now? The answer was London Calling. As Margaret Thatcher continued to remake Britain by looking into the past, so did The Clash, and the English rockers opened up all the rock 'n' roll doors their fellow punk colleagues had slammed over the last decade. They brushed up on their history, they let their sound travel overseas, they started writing narratives. By doing so, they defied any kind of label for themselves, starting a rebellion in the process, and one that The Opus plans to follow. In the first episode of our London Calling series, host Andy Bothwell is joined by Lee "Scratch" Perry, Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace, L7’s Donita Sparks, writer Dan Reilly (Rolling Stone/Spin/Entertainment Weekly), and filmmaker Joseph Patel (Vice/MTV Docs). Together, they discuss how London Calling didn't need to be punk to prove how punk it was, how it didn't need to be a giant arena record to prove how much it rocked, and how it managed to introduce all kinds of culture with zero pretension. So, hop in their brand new Cadillac and listen now. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of London Calling, revisit a selection of The Clash’s best tracks via all major streaming services, and enter to win both the 40th anniversary London Calling Scrapbook and Super Bundle.

If you were a feminist and a fan of hard rock in the 90s, you are probably still obsessed with Donita Sparks. Donita formed the band L7 in L.A .with her friend Suzi Gardner in 1985 and through various lineups, they toured the world with heavy, head-banging bravado for the next 16 years. During that time, they released five furious albums, including the amazing Bricks Are Heavy. And when the band broke up in 2001, punk girls everywhere shed bitter tears. But in 2014, Donita and Suzi, along with longtime bandmates Jennifer Finch and Demetra Plakas, got the band back together and they are currently rocking out harder than ever. In this episode of BUST’s Poptarts podcast, Donita gets real about music biz sexism, rocking for choice, and the “code of the road.”

L7 founder Donita Sparks dropped into the WFPK studio to talk with Kyle Meredith about the band's first album in 20 years, Scatter the Rats, particularly how the album balances big issues with humor. They also discuss the documentary that made their reunion a reality, how the band helped start Rock 4 Choice in the early '90s and its current fight today, signing to Blackheart Records, and, of course, their history with Joan Jett. Then, the two dial the clock back to '99 to get the story behind Slap-Happy, the band's final record before breaking up. Then, it's back to 1994 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hungry For Stink, which featured a song that would be covered by Prodigy on their Fat of the Land album, financially saving the band and leading to a moment where she gave a bouquet of flowers to the late Keith Flint and David Bowie. Episode 122 - Queens of Noize - Top 5 Female Rockers

Decibel Geek Podcast

Rock and Metal music is widely stereotyped as a man's world. This couldn't be further from the truth and Aaron and Chris are out to prove it today as they discuss and spin some of their favorite female rockers. Tracks from The Runaways, Vixen, Doro Pesch, L7, Halestorm, and Betty Blowtorch among many, many more show that girls can rock every bit as much as the boys in this hour-plus episode that highlights the Queens of Noize. Starting things off, is a double dose of Swedish female power as Sister Sin teams up with Doro Pesch for their take on a Motorhead classic. A few weeks ago, Aaron spun a great Billy Squier cover performed by Damone. Up from the ashes of that great band is singer Noelle LeBlanc's current project known as The Organ Beats. Featuring a catchy pop/rock sound, Chris spins a track from their 2012 'Goldenheart' release. An all-female metal band that cropped up in the 1990's was Drain STH. Also from Sweden, this group toured heavily, opening for many legendary hard rock and metal acts before calling it a day. Aaron spins a great track from this powerful but short-lived band. Chris' next pick hits close to home as he spins a selection from Vixen's self-titled 1988 debut. Late guitarist Jan Keuhnemund is no stranger to the Decibel Geek podcast as she was interviewed on the show back in 2012. We come back from the break with Aaron's choice of a controversial band from the 1990's. L7 were not your stereotypical all-girl group. In fact, they were as tough (if not tougher) than many of the male-dominated bands that they toured with. Fronted by Donita Sparks, we take a listen to an attitude-filled track from 1992's 'Bricks are Heavy' album. No list of top female rockers would be complete without a mention of Heart. Formed in Seattle in the 1970's and fronted by the sisters Wilson (Anne and Nancy), Heart have strung together a legendary career that has withstood numerous changes in trends. Chris spins one of their heavier tracks with a selection from 1980's 'Bebe Le Strange' album. What if there were an all-girl version of AC/DC? The closest thing you'll find to that are The Donnas. Known for a simple and catchy hard rock sound, this all-girl group has released a number of great tracks over the years. Aaron spins a festive number from their 'Bitchin' album. There's a female-fronted band that is getting lots of mainstream attention while continuing to fly the flag for classic hard rock and metal. Halestorm have been racking up hits and awards while saluting their heroes in the form of cover songs and guest appearances onstage. Led by singer/guitarist Lzzy Hale, this band continues to give us hope that good rock music is not going away anytime soon as we listen to a track from their 2012 'The Strange Case Of....' release. Rounding out Aaron's choices of top female rockers is another band that left us too soon; this time due to tragic circumstances. Betty Blowtorch was gaining real momentum with their debut album in the early 2000's and seemed destined to become pretty big stars.  That all ended much too early as lead singer Bianca Halstead was tragically killed in a car crash during their tour stop in New Orleans. We take a listen to a track that sums up the talent and humor that the band had going for it. As with Heart, we couldn't do this episode without putting the honor forward to another forerunner of powerful rock women. Chris picks his favorite song by The Runaways.  This band launched a number of great careers including Joan Jett, Cherie Curry, and Lita Ford. We finish our tribute to women in rock this week with a Joan Jett-fronted track from 1977's 'Waitin' for the Night.' Buy Music!
