Voter confidence has been shaken with voting machines malfunctioning in several Illinois jurisdictions. In McLean County, 34 ballots were placed in what the County Clerk Kathy Michael called “an emergency bin,” which is located underneath the voting machine used to tabulate ballots. At the Eastland Mall, an early voting location, the machine “glitched” for 30 minutes. Affected voter Wayne Henrichs called the clerk's office after putting his ballot in the bin and was connected with an assistant county clerk. “She indicated that they [the ballots in the emergency bin] are considered mail in ballots and they will be counted on election day rather than being counted early,” said Henrichs.

Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I'm your host Tim Landes. Anybody who loves going to the movies has a story about the first time they sat in front of the big screen and enjoyed a show. That buttery popcorn. The sticky floor. First come first serve on seating. Maggie Brown, director of exhibits at Tulsa Historical Society and Museum, is my guest on this episode. She too is interested in people's Tulsa. movie theater memories. Maggie is co-writing with Steve Clem the book titled "Tulsa Movie Theaters." They've been collecting those memories to share the stories of long lost theaters with fancy names like the Dreamland, the Orpheum, the Majestic, The Ritz. Well before the time of the AMCs and Cinemarks. My earliest movie theater memories, as you'll hear in this conversation recorded over Zoom, go back to the days of Eastland Mall, when the movie theater was the main attraction of the lower level. Flanked on either side by Cheese on a Stick, the arcade and the pizza shop. Now that area is the host of the Oklahoma Dept of Public Safety. There is no popcorn, but often long lines to get in. My Tulsa movie theater memories only go back a few decades, so not nearly as far as Maggie and Steve are going in their book that shares stories dating back a century ago. It was fun to chat with Maggie and hear about all the fun stuff they're discovering along the way. There are some mysteries still out there like how the Ritz was able to have moving clouds swirling near the ceiling? If you know the answer to how they made it happen or want to share any of your movie memories, there is a form to fill out through the new year at TulsaHistory.org. We close our conversation with what else is happening at the history center and what's to come. If you have a history buff in your family, a membership to their museum is a great gift idea as are the selection of gifts in their shop. Following my conversation with Maggie, I share the song "This Ol' Town" by Scott Aycock. It's a good one. More on that later. OK let's get this going. This is Tulsa Talks with Maggie Brown. Scott Aycock preview: When offering up his song "This Ol' Town" Scott Aycock had this to say: “The song I am choosing is one of my personal favorites, this week at least. It changes from week to week so I guess that's a good thing. It is called "This Ol' Town." The story behind the song according to him is this: “I grew up in a small town in Northeast Arkansas, in the delta. This song, though could be about any small town, America. We drove from one teen hangout to the next, it became a familiar pattern. I got to thinking about how when your young your caught between wanting to grow up and wanting to stay young. Thus this song.” You can find more of his music at https://scottaycock.bandcamp.com/releases Here is "This Ol' Town" by Scott Aycock.

Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber, I’m your host Tim Landes. That voice belongs to Corey Atchison. On July 16, Corey became a free man for the first time in nearly three decades. Judge Sharon Holmes said he was “actually innocent” of the 1990 killing of James Warren Lane. During our conversation, Corey revisits the night of the murder. He was found guilty on June 14 1991.Two days before the verdict, Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls won their first championship.People who listened to the radio or a cassette tape while driving to Eastland Mall or Casa Bonita likely heard Paula Abdul’s No. 1 single Rush Rush or maybe Color Me Badd’s I Wanna Sex You Up from the New Jack City soundtrack. That year the notebook computer (what we commonly call a laptop) was just going mainstream. The only mouse most people had in their homes was the furry rodent. Today you can stream a song instantaneously, in 1991 it took 9 minutes 15 seconds to download 1 megabite. It took 154 hours and 19 minutes to download a gig. That was the world Corey left.Once Corey entered the prison system with a life sentence, the world he knew was over. When he walked out of the Tulsa County Courthouse a couple of months ago, he entered a world unlike what he knew. It was as if he had time traveled. As you’ll hear, Corey always believed he would be exonerated. To bide his time he spent a lot of it cooking for other inmates, like Carl Fontenot (known for John Grisham’s book and the new Netflix docuseries “The Innocent Man”) and Corey’s brother Malcom Scott, who was wrongfully convicted of a separate murder and spent 22 years in prison before being released in 2016.That’s right two brothers, both wrongfully convicted murder. Corey went in as 20-year-old father of a baby girl. He re-enters society a 48-year-old grandfather of a 10-year-old boy. Mention his grandson and a smile erupts from his face.During our conversation, Corey talks about some of the struggles that come with re-entering the world and Tulsa after a 28-year absence. We discuss what life in prison was like for him, and his views on the prison system. We did not talk about his likely lawsuit against the state or about Tulsa County DA Steve Kunzweiler saying the state will appeal the release.Corey is a soft spoken man, who opened up and talked a lot about his experiences. I’m thankful for our conversation.Following that, we lighten things up with the newest installment of What the What with city editor Morgan Phillips. Morgan lived out a life-long dream of becoming a princess, specifically the fairest maiden of them all. It turns out being a princess is more than singing and talking to woodland animals. Closing out the episode is Hanna Roso’s new single, “Mars” off their debut release “Feed the Hungry” which was released on September 6th.Alright, let’s get this going. This is Tulsa Talks.

Your show for October 11th, 2018:  Newly released surveillance video contradicts the claims of a white, former Detroit Fire Department lieutenant that he tripped and accidentally discharged a gunshot at a 14-year-old black student who had knocked on his door, seeking directions. Dan Gilbert already wanted to build Detroit’s tallest skyscraper on the former site of the J.L. Hudson’s department store on Woodward Avenue. The latest site plans, obtained by Crain’s, show it getting even taller. Eastland Mall has been purchased! An unexpected bidding war produced a $3.125 million sale price. A report by WXYZ says it took Detroit Police four days to respond to a 9-1-1 call about a domestic abuse emergency. Wasn’t improved response times supposed to be one of the department’s new crowning achievements? Ann Arbor, Detroit, East Lansing and Ferndale received perfect scores in a ranking of municipal protections and equality measures for LGBT employees that go beyond state laws. Construction work is behind schedule on I-696 because of a labor dispute, but the freeway might reopen before winter weather arrives, even if the work isn’t technically done. You know how expensive it is to use another bank’s ATM? Well, a new study finds that Detroit has the highest average ATM fees in the nation. Yay? Residents of a historic building in downtown Detroit that is known as an affordable living option for low-income residents have received notices that they have 30 days to move out and find a new place to live. It’s the latest in gentrification growing pains for Detroit. The Freep has the story. Kid Rock visits the Trump White House again, and Kanye West returns to Detroit for some sushi. And we have all the ammunition a weekend warrior needs about upcoming new restaurants and bars in the region.

Being a native Detroit-er myself I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to interview a guy who just wrote a book about my hometown. Mark Binelli, says he grew up on the east side, St. Clair Shores to be exact. He and I share the fact that we both lived near the infamous 8 Mile that Eminem talks and sings about. Mark shares what he sees as some of the things that brought Detroit down, how it is trying to rebuild itself and how it might just become a living example of the first post industrial city. Being from Detroit myself, we are survivors, nothing woud surprise me about Detroit making a comeback bigger and better than before, in fact that is my prayer. I have nothing but great memories of growing up within the city limits of Detroit's east side, Rossini to be exact. I lived between Kelly Road and Shakespeare, a few blocks south of 8 mile, and just down the street from Eastland Mall. Mark's book will make you both sad and hopeful, about Detroit's past, present and future. Post Note*****Apparently Europeans are fascinated by Detroit, flying to the city to see as they said to Mark during an interview "We came to see the end of the world." That is what Detroit represents to them...
