Modern science has given us the ability to edit our genes, life-saving vaccines, and glimpse the origins of the universe. But is the same system holding itself back? Critics argue that the pressure to publish and fierce competition for funding rewards safe, incremental work over bold thinking. Others see a system still capable of paradigm-shifting discoveries — one where global collaborations and long-term thinking motivate scientists to pursue grand, ambitious ideas. Now we debate: Is the Scientific Enterprise Too Risk-Averse? This debate was produced in partnership with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University, as part of The Hopkins Forum series. Arguing Yes: Tyler Cowen, Author of "The Great Stagnation"; Economics Professor at George Mason University; Founder of Emergent Ventures; Host of "Conversations with Tyler" podcast Brandon Ogbunu, Computational Biologist; Associate Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Yale University; Professor at the Santa Fe Institute Arguing No: Kate Biberdorf (“Kate the Chemist”), Professor for the Public Understanding of Science and the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of Notre Dame; Science Entertainer The Honorable Sethuraman Panchanathan, 15th Director of the National Science Foundation; University Professor of Technology and Innovation and Foundation Chair at Arizona State University Emmy award-winning journalist John Donvan moderates Join the conversation on Substack—share your perspective on this episode and subscribe to our weekly newsletter for curated insights from our debaters, moderators, and staff. A lift in beneficiaries could suggest recent policy decisions are taking us in the wrong direction. At the end of March, just over 409 thousand people were on a main benefit, almost 3% more than the year prior. Jobseeker numbers are up 2.6%. Auckland University Associate Economics Professor Susan St John told Ryan Bridge many of the ways we've tried to bring down spending have impacted the labour market. She says until we can recognise we're in a deep recession it's going to get worse, and we need the Government to step up, otherwise we're stuffed. What happens when an economist who predicted the 2008 financial crisis says Bitcoin is a Ponzi scheme? In a recent interview, Australian economist Steve Keen made several strong claims about Bitcoin — arguing that it has no intrinsic value, wastes energy, is mainly used for criminals, and could even be heading to zero. But do these arguments actually hold up?In this episode, we break down Steve Keen's criticisms one by one and explore the bigger questions around Bitcoin, wealth, and investing. Along the way we discuss common misconceptions about Bitcoin, why many people still confuse Bitcoin with the wider crypto market, and what these debates reveal about the modern financial system. You'll learn why people keep calling Bitcoin a Ponzi scheme and whether that claim actually makes sense, the key differences between Bitcoin and the wider crypto market, how Bitcoin's energy use and mining relate to its value, and why critics often link Bitcoin to crime and the dark web. We also explore what debates like this reveal about money printing, inflation, and long-term wealth building. Listen to this episode to hear Steve Keen's arguments against Bitcoin — and the breakdown of what they mean for wealth, investing, and the future of money.
