Just before I head overseas to the land of my ancestors in Scotland and Ireland, I was lucky enough to stumble into an Irish music session in Brisbane. The Irish accents flew thick and fast, to the accompaniment of the bodran, Eilean pipes, tin whistle and fiddle. Jack O'Leary is one of the musicians who makes this weekly quest to reconnect with his homeland. He tells us on Streets of Your Town, how Irish music and Australian culture have intertwined, to the degree that you can find a similar Irish music session, at most cities and towns throughout Australia. The trans pipe and fiddle player Malin Lewis grew up on a magical island off the West coast of Scotland. There were no roads or cars and their family were the only permanent residents. Home schooled till the age of seven, Malin had an idyllic childhood roaming the forests, building dens and splashing in the shallows on the white sand beaches. In this episode this rising star of the Scottish folk scene - with a hotly anticipated debut album about to be released - makes an emotional return to the island to play on the shore and stage a homecoming concert in the abandoned village hall. --- We rely on support from our listeners to keep this show on the road. Diktraderna träffar mig i hjärtat.

The mysterious disappearance of the Eilean Mor lighthouse keepers. On the 26th December 1900, a small ship was making its way to the Flannan Islands in the remote Outer Hebrides. Its destination was the lighthouse at Eilean Mor, a remote island which (apart from its lighthouse keepers) was completely uninhabited.Although uninhabited, the island has always sparked people's interest. It is named after St. Flannen, a 6th century Irish Bishop who later became a saint. He built a chapel on the island and for centuries shepherds used to bring over sheep to the island to graze but would never stay the night, fearful of the spirits believed to haunt that remote spot.Captain James Harvey was in charge of the ship which was also carrying Jospeph Moore, a replacement lifehouse keeper. As the ship reached the landing platform, Captain Harvey was surprised not to see anyone waiting for their arrival. He blew his horn and sent up a warning flare to attract attention. There was no response.Joseph Moore then rowed ashore and ascended up the steep set of stairs that led up to the lighthouse. According to reports from Moore himself, the replacement lighthouse keeper suffered an overwhelming sense of foreboding on his long walk up to the top of the cliff. The island of Eilean Mor, with the lighthouse in the background. Attribution: Marc Calhoun under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.0 Generic license.Once at the lighthouse, Moore noticed something was immediately wrong; the door to the lighthouse was unlocked and in the entrance hall two of the three oil skinned coats were missing. Moore continued onto the kitchen area where he found half eaten food and an overturned chair, almost as if someone had jumped from their seat in a hurry. To add to this peculiar scene, the kitchen clock had also stopped.Moore continued to search the rest of the lighthouse but found no sign of the lighthouse keepers. He ran back to the ship to inform Captain Harvey, who subsequently ordered a search of the islands for the missing men. No-one was found.Harvey quickly sent back a telegram to the mainland, which in turn was forwarded to the Northern Lighthouse Board Headquarters in Edinburgh. The telegraph read:A dreadful accident has happened at Flannans. The three Keepers, Ducat, Marshall and the occasional have disappeared from the island. On our arrival there this afternoon no sign of life was to be seen on the Island.Fired a rocket but, as no response was made, managed to land Moore, who went up to the Station but found no Keepers there. The clocks were stopped and other signs indicated that the accident must have happened about a week ago. Poor fellows they must been blown over the cliffs or drowned trying to secure a crane or something like that.Night coming on, we could not wait to make something as to their fate.I have left Moore, MacDonald, Buoymaster and two Seamen on the island to keep the light burning until you make other arrangements. Will not return to Oban until I hear from you. I have repeated this wire to Muirhead in case you are not at home. I will remain at the telegraph office tonight until it closes, if you wish to wire me.A few days later, Robert Muirhead, the board's supernatant who both recruited and knew all three men personally, departed for the island to investigate the disappearances. His investigation of the lighthouse found nothing over and above what Moore had already reported. That is, except for the lighthouse's log…Muirhead immediately noticed that the last few days of entries were unusual. On the 12th December, Thomas Marshall, the second assistant, wrote of ‘severe winds the likes of which I have never seen before in twenty years'. He also noticed that James Ducat, the Principal Keeper, had been ‘very quiet' and that the third assistant, William McArthur, had been crying. What is strange about the final remark was that William McArthur was a seasoned mariner, and was known on the Scottish mainland as a tough brawler. Why would he be crying about a storm?Log entries on the 13th December stated that the storm was still raging, and that all three men had been praying. But why would three experienced lighthouse keepers, safely situated on a brand new lighthouse that was 150 feet above sea level, be praying for a storm to stop? They should have been perfectly safe.Even more peculiar is that there were no reported storms in the area on the 12th, 13th and 14th of December. In fact, the weather was calm, and the storms that were to batter the island didn't hit until December 17th.The final log entry was made on the 15th December. It simply read ‘Storm ended, sea calm. God is over all'. What was meant by ‘God is over all'?After reading the logs, Muirhead's attention turned to the remaining oil skinned coat that had been left in the entrance hall. Why, in the bitter cold winter, had one of the lighthouse keepers ventured out without his coat? Furthermore, why had all three lighthouse staff left their posts at the same time, when rules and regulations strictly prohibited it?Further clues were found down by the landing platform. Here Muirhead noticed ropes strewn all over the rocks, ropes which were usually held in a brown crate 70 feet above the platform on a supply crane. Perhaps the crate had been dislodged and knocked down, and the lighthouse keepers were attempting to retrieve them when an unexpected wave came and washed them out to sea? This was the first and most likely theory, and as such Muirhead included it in his official report to the Northern Lighthouse Board. But this explanation left some people in the Northern Lighthouse Board unconvinced. For one, why had none of the bodies been washed ashore? Why had one of the men left the lighthouse without taking his coat, especially since this was December in the Outer Hebridies? Why had three experienced lighthouse keepers been taken unaware by a wave?Although these were all good questions, the most pertinent and persistent question was around the weather conditions at the time; the seas should have been calm! They were sure of this as the lighthouse could be seen from the nearby Isle of Lewis, and any bad weather would have obscured it from view.Over the following decades, subsequent lighthouse keepers at Eilean Mor have reported strange voices in the wind, calling out the names of the three dead men. Theories about their disappearance have ranged from foreign invaders capturing the men, all the way through to alien abductions! Whatever the reason for their disappearance, something (or someone) snatched those three men from the rock of Eilean Mor on that winter's day over 100 years ago.The mysterious disappearance of the Eilean Mor lighthouse keepers.

That's my 24th solo studio album. The title means “when everything is strange and different, yet you find it marvelous anyway.” I feel like that suits my music to a tee. So I'm getting ready for the release. It's odd releasing music as an indie musician. I host the largest podcast in the world for Celtic music, the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I also have the Irish & Celtic Music Magazine to promote it. There's a sizable mailing list there. But I realize that's it for what I can do. From there, I need to actually reach out to other businesses and organizations. I gotta say it's kinda scary. And there's a reason why it's scary. Years ago, the Brobdingnagian Bards released our first album, Marked By Great Size. I had NO network back then. I was not a gatekeeper for Celtic music. I was at the mercy of every newspaper, magazine, or radio show. I sent the album out. I hounded the media places I sent the CD to. One was Dirty Linen magazine. That was the #1 magazine for Folk Music in the world. I emailed and emailed and wrote. No response. Months later, the album was finally reviewed. 2.5 stars and a very short 3-5 sentences belittling the album. I was heartbroken. Months of hard work yielded THAT. Now to be fair, it also inspired me to start my own internet magazine and eventually a podcast. But after releasing 23 solo albums, I realize that's just not enough. I need to do more. And I'm scared to. So I'm gonna throw this out there. Is anyone interested in helping me promote my music, drop me an email. I have a method that will hopefully work. 3:45 - Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh “The Emigrant's Farewell” from daybreak: fainne an lae 7:34 - NEW PLAYLIST: IRISH & CELTIC MUSIC BEST OF 2022 I have a new playlist on Spotify. I recorded a fantastic version of the song for my CD Scottish Songs of Drinking & Rebellion. You can hear more about that song in show #243 of Pub Songs & Stories. Being a filker as well as a Celtic singer/songwriter, I find myself rewriting traditional Celtic song lyrics on a whim. That's what ultimately led to my Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers series of CDs. “Mingulay Boat Song” was one such song that was a victim of my filking. It happened when Kenzie was about 2 or 3 years old. Must've been about two. Because I remember her in a high chair right next to our kitchen table. She was eating and had a juice bottle sitting on the table. She barely finished eating. I realized we were running late. So I didn't clean up. I picked her up and ran out the door, and drove her to daycare. When I got back, I walked into the kitchen and stepped in a puddle of sticky juice. JENGA! We had four cats at the time. We call ourselves the Brady Bunch of cats. She had two girls. I had two boys. They all had their quirks. Jenga was Gwen's cat. She was a tuxedo, black fur and white paws. She had a tiny head and a big body. One of her quirks was to meow and beg when someone was eating ice cream. The other was she knocked over any cup liquid that was left alone longer than 3 minutes. For this reason to this day, we rarely have open drinks sitting out. Bottles of water are always preferred even though she passed away a couple years ago. I don't remember when exactly I wrote “Mingulay Cat Song”. But it wrote itself. I just had to remember the various instances when she knocked over this or that glass of liquid: watching TV, at bedtime, or just watching her in the act and wondering what is that all about? Why do cats like to knock things over. Three things that I really LOVE about the lyrics. First is the third verse. There's a cold glass of water by the bedside. When I'm performing the song, I love acting out the tongue trying to lick the water in the glass that is not yet spilled over. I also love ending the verse with “satiated” even though it doesn't rhyme. It still works. The third thing I love about the song is answering the question: why do cats love to knock over stuff? And I feel like my answer is pretty creative. 28:23 - Marc Gunn “Mingulay Cat Song” from Selcouth 32:27 - NEXT TIME Eamonn Flynn shares an inspiring story of Dublin during a pandemic. Eilean Shona, a small wooded island in Loch Moidart, on the West Coast of Scotland, is owned by Vanessa Branson, sister of Richard. Over many years she has restored deserted crofters' cottages, the schoolhouse and the Big House, replanting trees and managing the wildlife. It's famed for a unique collection of pine trees planted in the 19th century by a former owner, Captain Thomas Swinburne. Vanessa runs artists workshops and retreats as well as a holiday business. The island has a famous literary connection with J.M Barrie who is reputed to have written the screen play for 'Peter Pan' while staying there. Vanessa tells Helen Mark that living in such a remote, exposed part of the UK has made her much more conscious of the threat of climate change. She talks about the growing number of severe winter storms and dry hot summers which are increasing the risks of tree diseases and forest fires. Vanessa says she is very conscious of controversies over Scottish land ownership and describes herself and her family as Eilean Shona's 'custodians', preserving and looking after the environment and respecting its past. She believes it also has a valuable role as a cultural centre where writers, artists and film makers can work. James MacLellan, grew up on Eilean Shona. His family worked there for generations and he recalls being the only pupil in the island's school. He remembers helping his father when it was a working estate and he talks about the pressure on families living in tied cottages. Jonty and Sarah Watt have recently given up their commuter lifestyle in the south of England to become the island's estate managers. They talk about the challenge and attraction of moving from Sussex to the Hebrides. Presented by Helen Mark Produced by Kathleen Carragher

Today’s selection is curated by Aaron Martin, whose discovery not only blankets many notable labels, such as Fluid Audio, Dronarivm, Facture, Preservation, Experimedia, Eilean, Lost Tribe Sound and many more but also extends to his collaborations with Dag Rosenqvist (who, also, by the way, made us a Headphone Commute mix) as a very special project they named From The Mouth Of The Sun. So, as you can imagine, I’m pretty excited and honoured to host this exclusive mix, where Aaron selects his favourites for your ears and for your commute. As usual, this is a type of entry that deserves more music and less words, so enjoy and support the featured artists! Please be aware the stories, theories, re-enactments and language in this podcast are of an adult nature and can be disturbing, frightening and in some cases offensive. Listener Discretion is advised – there is very adult content ahead and you have been warned. Welcome heathens welcome to the world of the weird and unexplained. I’m your host, Nicole Delacroix and together, we will be investigating stories about the weird, wonderful, unexplained, eerie, scary and down-right unbelievable. There will be tales of ghosts, murder, supernatural beings and unexplained mysteries. So, sit back, grab your favorite drink, relax and prepare to be transported to today's dark Enigma.... And on today’s Dark enigma we’re going to be exploring a story that I’ve followed for a very long time. I find it fascinating and I hope you do as well. But before we get started, as always, we will be playing our drinking game. Remember, the drinking game is only for those of us that are at home and have nowhere else to go tonight. I’m going to leave things open and say our story today has mystery and the sea... so pick your poison based on this. Now for the game part... every time I say lighthouse that will be a single shot and every time I say Hebrides, that’s a double shot. Now that we have the business end out of the way we can jump headfirst into today’s dark enigma… and the mysterious disappearance of the Eilean Mor lighthouse Keepers. The Scottish Hebrides is a craggy and foreboding archipelago. Often swathed in mist, its jagged rock formations erupt from the North Sea like the fangs of some aquatic leviathan. But on clear days the water becomes aqua blue, and the islands, illuminated in sunlight, appear idyllic. Dec. 26, 1900, was one such day, according to Captain James Harvey, who had been sent to the Flannan Isles to provide some much-needed relief to the three lighthouse keepers on the island of Eilean Mor. Although uninhabited, the island has always sparked people’s interest. It is named after St. Flannen, a 6th century Irish Bishop who later became a saint, who built a chapel on the island and for centuries shepherds used to bring over sheep to the island to graze but would never stay the night, fearful of the spirits believed to haunt such a remote spot. Captain James Harvey was in charge of the ship which was also carrying Joseph Moore, a replacement lifehouse keeper. As the ship reached the landing platform, Captain Harvey was surprised when no one was waiting for their arrival. He blew his horn and sent up a warning flare to attract attention. There was no response.

Mathias Van Eecloo has been extremely prolific with the curation of his very own Eilean Records. I honestly can’t keep up. This year alone, he has already put out 14 records, each one with a point on the imaginary map of music. At the end of 2016, Headphone Commute featured a mix with a selection from the imprint showcasing the catalog to the busy listener unable to consume individual records in time. It’s a fantastic [re-]introduction to Eilean’s ambient landscape. This year we thought we’d do the same. So here’s the 2017 installment of eilean rec. releases, compiled by Mathias himself, to reveal a few more points, for your ever-discovered sonic terrain. Eilean Rec. is an independent French label, run by Mathias Van Eecloo (of Monolyth & Cobalt) releasing ambient, electro-acoustic, experimental music, and everything in between. All physical releases are limited to about 50 to 200 copies, and are handmade with additional help in design from Rémi Verdier. Conceptually, the entire project is based around a map with 100 points (and 4 color tones), each referencing an album, or rather the other way around. Each album slowly fills in a point on a map, completing the sonic puzzle of this imaginary island. Each artist involved in the project is also invited to submit a few grains of soil from wherever they come.
