Ellory Smith is an Emmy nominated Writer and Standup Comedian in Los Angeles. Original from Upstate New York, Ellory got into comedy over a decade ago cutting her teeth in New York and Boston before moving to LA where she's been performing and writing for the last 7 year. Smith got her big break in writing when she was noticed by the creators of Robot Chicken, a stop-motion animated sketch comedy TV show on Adult Swim. Ellory's elite writing has earned her 3 Emmy nominations and we believe the best is yet to come.

Rivka and Frank are joined by 3 time Emmy Nominated writer and comedian Ellory Smith to discuss the 1998 Disney / Pixar film A Bug's Life. The trio deep dive into this radical animation, discussing its themes of exploitation and surplus value. They also discuss how the circus bugs symbolize mutual aid, and, in a controversial twist, they ask: Is Flick actually the hyper-individualistic villain of the story? For next week's movie, we'll be watching the 1995 Robin Williams classic, Jumanji.

Emmy nominated writer and comedian Ellory Smith joins us to talk about being a George Saunders superfan and trying to identify the hypocrisy of the world as a means of illuminating a better one. She and Joshua get into conspiracy theories about hippies and PETA, Toni Morrison and Magic Bullet blenders. Their conversation ranges from nature reclaiming Chernobyl to the graffiti artists doing the same to the abandoned high rises in downtown LA. This conversation skips the small talk and goes right into grief, the world's problems, and how literature gets us into reflecting on what's right and wrong in our own lives. Hosted on Acast. This week I spiraled out with stand up comedian, Emmy-nominated television writer, and VULNERABLE QUEEN Ellory Smith (Funnilingus, Robot Chicken.) We talked re-parenting yourself as an adult, whether emotional or physical cheating is worse, the way that ignored pain will make itself KNOWN, and so much more. Plus, Ellory tells an incredible shame story about spending more money than she should have on a FRENCH CLOWNING CLASS, only to panic in the first exercise and bail on the class completely. There is so much focus on the craft of comedy these days that one might look past how the economics of it often contribute to just how hard it is to do comedy as either passion or a career.
