Hey friends! We have a treat for you this week! This week we're chatting with our friend, Author F.T. Lukens about their forthcoming book 'Otherworldly'! Otherworldly launches April 2nd, 2024, and it's a magical contemporary book! We also talk about advice for authors (how to not be your own biggest critic!) magical references, and so so much more in this episode! Otherworldly follows Ellory, a non-binary teen who has moved away from their family farm to live with their cousin Charlie and her partner Zada to live in the city. Ellory's family farm has been plunged into decline as both the country side and the city have been gridlocked in what could be an eternal winter, with no end in sight. Ellory also doesn't believe in the gods or the magical beings that exist in the world, and is soon face to face with this magical world when they have a run in with Knox, a magical being who was summoned to this world to assist with a deal that seems to have come to an end. Knox is worried there is something wrong with his Queen, because she has not responded to his messages for 5 years. Can a non-believer and a magical being figure out what's plaguing the world? Or will this eternal winter continue for eternity ? Theme song by Man With Roses

In this special bonus episode, I chat with author (and dear friend of the show) Jordan Harper about his newly released novel EVERYBODY KNOWS. Thank you so much for the ongoing support! One Heat Minute ProductionsWEBSITE: oneheatminute.comTWITTER: @OneBlakeMinute & @OHMPodsMERCH: https://www.teepublic.com/en-au/stores/one-heat-minute-productionABOUT JORDAN HARPER: Jordan is the Edgar-Award-winning author of She Rides Shotgun and Love and Other Wounds. Born and educated in Missouri, he now lives in Los Angeles, where he works as a writer and producer for television.TWITTER: @JORDAN_HARPERNEWSLETTER: WELCOME TO THE HAMMER PARTYABOUT EVERYBODY KNOWSTruth may be stranger than fiction but sometimes fiction predicts the truth. Jordan Harper's new book EVERYBODY KNOWS is a combination of both. A propulsive LA crime thriller that James Patterson dubbed “the best mystery novel I've read in years,” is the story of Mae Pruett a "black-bag publicist" - she doesn't get the good news out, she keeps the bad news in – who works for “The Beast,” her name for the loose collection of lawyers, publicists and private security firms who protect and serve the wealthy and depraved of Los Angeles.Chris Tamburro is Mae's ex, a former cop fired for corruption and a fist on the Beast's arm, working as muscle for a shady lawyer. They must both confront the bad things they aid and abet when Mae's boss is gunned down in front of the Beverly Hills Hotel, dying with a secret Mae is determined to learn. Unraveling the mystery of her boss's death takes them through an electric, pulpy vision of Los Angeles, a world of homeless camp bombers, drug-addled celebrities, cop gangs who mark their kills with tattoos, a livestreamed murder, and powerful men with a secret so dark they will kill to keep it.Much of the novel is based Jordan's experiences and those of his friends and co-workers in the film and TV industry, and the whisper network of Los Angeles, “Nobody Talks but Everybody Whispers.” To be authentic Jordan wrote the opening scene about Mae having to visit a client at The Chateau Marmot, at the Chateau Marmot. Every celebrity sighting in the book is based on a real sighting he had had in the actual place he had it. Jordan also interviewed a crisis manager who represented one of the biggest villains of the MeToo era and sat down with a Hollywood actress to talk about the pressures of her life. There are literally dozens of scandals and real-life crimes that are fictionalized in the novel, from the publicist gunned down on Sunset Blvd. to the firebombing of homeless camps and many, many more.Incredible early praise for EVERYBODY KNOWS“EVERYBODY KNOWS rages through the City of Angels like a broken-dam flood. It's got it all, but most of all it's got deep insight. It's the book everybody's been waiting for.”—Michael Connelly"Just as Ellory mastered the atavistic heart of 1950's corruption, soJordan Harper has mastered articulating the Day-Glo Technicolor nightmare that is postmodern Los Angeles. EVERYBODY KNOWS is filled with ballsy movers and shakers, of course, but also plastic social media influencers, high-rent hoods, nihilistic cops, and the sorts of lost souls you'll never forget.EVERYBODY KNOWS is an absolute tour de force, a trip through an exclusive alluring Hell where everyone gets what they want and just what they deserve.”—SA Cosby, bestselling author of RAZORBLADE TEARS and BLACKTOP WASTELAND“What a ride! If it were possible for James Ellroy and James M. Cain to produce a bastard love child, it would be EVERYBODY KNOWSby Jordan Harper. Awash in substance abuse, sex and demented violence, this is the LA of a good drug trip turned very bad.”—Dennis Lehane, bestselling author of MYSTIC RIVER and SHUTTER ISLAND“With EVERYBODY KNOWS, Jordan Harper takes on the Beast—the monstrous, corrupt, insatiable mass of organs that eats the losers and feeds the winners in capitalist America, with Hollywood as its base of operations. Our guides to this world (our world) are two of its own dirty players, a celebrity publicist with killer instincts and an ex-cop goon for hire, looking for survival and money and maybe, if it's in the cards, a little bit of redemption. It's a juggernaut of a novel, fast and high-impact, with a sense of doomed humor and bright, sharp teeth.”—Steph Cha, LA Times Book Prize-winning author of YOUR HOUSE WILL PAY“Good lord, this book is fantastic. EVERYBODY KNOWSis one of the best LA noir novels I've ever read. The writing is astonishingly good. It's a wild, honest, sharp, and suspenseful ride, full of wry observations about the nature of power and the cost of being good in a bad, bad world." —Attica Locke, bestselling author of HEAVEN, MY HOME and BLUEBIRD, BLUEBIRD"Searing, timely, sprawling, EVERYBODY KNOWS pulls back Hollywood's velvet curtain, exposing the sordid machinations on which the industry runs and the seamy complicity which keeps it humming. This is L.A. noir at its most incendiary." —Megan Abbott, bestselling author of THE TURNOUT“Jordan Harper writers like he's L.A.'s avenging angel.EVERYBODY KNOWS is timely. It's timeless. It's a knockout punch.” —James Kestrel, author of the Edgar Award-winning FIVE DECEMBERS“EVERYBODY KNOWS is the best mystery novel I've read in years…Jordan Harper writes sentences, and in this case an entire book, that is both terrifying and exhilarating.” —James PattersonSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

UK author Roger Ellory is a thriller author who discusses the book that started him along a successful path as a professional writer, "L. Ron Hubbard: The Writer." It contained essays and articles by Mr. Hubbard on the craft of writing which are as applicable now as when he wrote them, regardless the genre one decides to write in. One essay, "The Manuscript Factory," addresses output and how to achieve it. Mr. Hubbard produced 50,000 words a month, which Roger has taken to heart and he has written 50,000 words per month himself since becoming a writer. In William Shakespeare's home in London, there are a series of questions posed, nicely written on leather, and placed on a wall in his residence. One of the questions was "Is Shakespeare the most translated author in history?" Lifting up the leather, the answer reads, "No, that honor belongs to L. Ron Hubbard." Roger discusses the passion necessary to write a book that generates sufficient enthusiasm to engage a reader. He was first published in 2002 and has now published 15 novels, winning numerous awards globally and translated into 26 languages. Picasso responded to a question as to why he still painted perched on a ladder at 82 when a doodle on a napkin could sell for a quarter-million dollars: "Inspiration exists but it has to find you working." You need to keep yourself working, keep yourself motivated. Any creative faculty is like a muscle. If you don't exercise it, it won't get strong. So you have to write to build it. He recommends "A Quiet Belief in Angels" as his first book and I wholeheartedly agree! It's an amazing read. Learn more about him at www.rjellory.com

There are three narrative voice in this novel: Lotte, a young girl with Downs syndrome; her older brother Rune, whom she calls Roo; and the ghostly voice of their mother that comes to them only in words written long before. To give a rapid sketch of the novel without giving away too much, it moves back and forth between Then, January 1989, and Now, 1999. And from West Germany to East Germany both before and after the fall of the wall.Mama has tried to escape with her children many times, running from her abusive husband. But he is a powerful person in the West German police, and he uses his influence each time to drag her back home. Finally, in desperation, she flees to East Germany to find an old friend who runs a home for battered women, and she takes with her documents of her husband’s that she will use as bartering tools with the East German communist leaders to find safe passage for her and her children.Rune and Lotte are incredibly close, and Roo vows to care for her always. He, being older, remembers much of the abuse that his mother (and eventually he as well) has suffered from Papa. Lotte, only five when they make their escape, loves her Papa, and believes him to be her protector. When a strange package appears in the mail with a notebook and many pages of drawings, Papa, in a rage, tears it all into tiny pieces and tells Lotte that it is all lies from her whore mother. Lotte manages to gather together all the pieces and tries to make sense of these words from Mama whom she has been told is dead. When she reads of a group of women who are trying to reconstruct documents shredded in haste by  the East German secret police as it became obvious that the wall would fall, she decides she has to find these puzzle women to help her reconstruct Mama’s words meant for a her and Rune. Saying, as her brother and her mother have always told her that she is more than her Downs and that she is inde-pen-dent, she sets off on her own to go to Nuremberg  and the Puzzle Women.Turns out Lotte is incredibly good at putting together the fragments of her mother’s pages, and several of the women take her under their wing and help her with the task. Sweet, kind Lotte is loved by most who meet her and look at more than her medical condition. Slowly, the mother’s voice emerges in wonderfully poetic strings of words meant for her loved children. The more or less stream of consciousness words of Mama are often hard for this reader to follow and make sense of, but there is a wonderful, poetic beauty to her words.‘Mama, Roo says…’ Lotte started, hair across her face and her cheeks pink from sleep; disheveled, more a baby when awoke from sleep than any other time. She’s growing up so fast. The innocence of her wrapped around me and swelled in the room like a sunrise: expansive, hopeful. Her pajama bottoms scrunched up on one side, hair in a tangle. Moo Bunny under her arm, the cold morning light at her back, but standing in front of me was the warmth of my child fresh from sleep.A light within light. Awoke from bliss, to the world … and into a world that has changed.Rune is a wonderful artist who begins his artistic career as a graffiti-ist , but who has great talent in portraiture and other forms of art. Hoping in 1999 to escape from his abusive father and take Lotte with him, he applies to an art institute that would provide housing as well as a stipend. Alas, his father manipulates behind the  scenes and makes sure that his application for admission is rejected, in spite of the fact that the teachers are very impressed with his portfolio. While this is primarily a novel about spousal abuse, there is much about the two Germanys both before and after the fall of the wall. Mama and her children do find refuge in the East, and the novel is quite fair regarding the good things about East Germany. But Rune is drafted into the Pioneers, and made to inform on his neighbors and even on the remarkable woman who runs the shelter. The poor boy carries with him tons of guilt over not having been able to save his mother, his inability  to keep Lotte safe, and finally for the consequences of his informing on others. While this novel is difficult to read, both emotionally and because of its form, I think it is a wonderful novel, and recommend it to all serious readers. I don’t think it lends itself to piecemeal reading.

Site: http://www.audiobooks.com/podcast  | Email: podcast@audiobooks.com From Tamara Ireland Stone to Fred Godsmark to Tucker Max, we've had a lot of authors and audiobook business persons featured on the podcast, so this week we get back to the receiving end of audiobooks. Welcome business coach and audiobook lover Ellory Wells to the discussion! Ellory lends us his perspective on the listening experience and gives us a lot of recommendations for audiobooks to explore. The Experience We've discussed on the podcast before the differences between listening to an audiobook for entertainment purposes versus listening to an audiobook for reasons of time constraints or circumstance. It is much easier, and safer, to listen to an audiobook while stuck in traffic, for example, than reading a hardcover book! If the purpose we have to listen to an audiobook is entertainment, then the narrator contributes a great deal to that experience. The book series that Ellory is currently reading, Undying Mercenaries written by B. V. Larson, keeps him engaged largely because of the narrator, Mark Boyett. Earth is visited by visitors from another galaxy in this book series, and instead of being exterminated, mankind joins with their visitors and go on adventures in space. Ellory says they're easy reads, but are engaging and he enjoys the way Mark Boyett brings the characters to life. The entertainment value is high. The same goes for The Martian, a book and audiobook we've discussed previously on this podcast, and one that continues to receive good reviews. The narrator for The Martian does a fantastic job of conveying Mark Watney's, the main character, personality. Heavily sardonic, but an articulate intellectual, who has been well trained to survive in circumstances that normal people do not face. The narrator brings charm to Watney's voice and a deep emotional connection with the man living alone on Mars. Is It Cheating to Listen? Does the method of consumption contribute to the legitimacy of an experience? Do we lose something by listening to, rather than reading, a book? This is one of the questions we ask Ellory, and his response is very interesting! We're going to let you listen to the podcast to hear his perspective, but in the meantime, let's take another look at this concept. It should come as no surprise that in our modern, 21st-century culture, scientists have explored the differences of effects between reading and listening to books when it comes to how the brain processes and absorbs information. Researchers have done studies for decades about listening comprehension versus reading comprehension and their correlation to different personalities and different learning styles. But even through all of this research there seems to be inconclusive evidence that a person absorbs or understands better either through reading or listening. A well-known phrase, coined by Marshall McLuhan in his 1964 book Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, says this: “the medium is the message.” One of his first objectives is to demonstrate how the content of a particular medium is also a medium. In the case of audiobooks, if we were to ask what the content of an audiobook is, the answer might be “book”, whereas we'd say the content of a book is “the written word”. The question of whether it is cheating to listen to a book becomes a little different in this context because there is a degree of separation between the written word and the way it is absorbed. If scientists can't find conclusive proof that we, as humans, understand better through reading or listening, then it's difficult to say that listening is straight up cheating. There is certainly something to be gained by various learning styles from listening to audiobooks, but it can also neither be a blanket statement. In Understanding Media, McLuhan argues that a medium translates content. While reading a book, the written word translates the story for our brains to absorb; while listening to an audiobook, the narrator translates the story for our brains to absorb. In both cases, our brains still achieve direct access to the story; our mind's eye must still create the story in our imaginations or our intellect must process the information for application. Is it cheating to listen to audiobooks? Science and social theory may never be able to give us a direct answer to that question. Perhaps that question is tied into a deeper social issue of the modern age as we witness other mediums fade into the category of obsolete technology. Whether we use technology as an excuse or a crutch to avoid a tedious task is also called into question. In the end, we love audiobooks for the similar reason we love the theater, or a film, or a rock concert: it is another medium through which we can absorb, learn, grow and be entertained. The Magic of the Taylor Swift Brand – Episode 113 Are you looking to make your brand stand out from the rest? It is possible. However, it takes a lot of work. Famous college basketball coach Bobby Knight once said, “Everyone wants to be a champion, but few want to do the work it takes to be a champion.” Taylor Swift is one of those people willing to do the work. I think you can learn a lot from the Taylor Swift brand when creating your own. She has done amazing work over the past 10 years. Regardless of your musical preferences, it is hard not to admire the empire she has created. Taylor Swift was recently in town for a pair of concerts. This was the fourth time I've had the pleasure of meeting her. She never fails to amaze me with her networking abilities. There are four things you can learn by studying the brand Taylor has created. 1. KNOW WHEN TO LAUNCH Now 25 years old, Taylor moved to Nashville when she was 14. She was determined to get a record deal when most 8th graders are just figuring out middle school. She knocked on doors until someone opened. Even though she got a record deal at 14, she didn't experience immediate success. Taylor wrote, recorded and learned the business for two years before her first album was even released. Taylor Swift took her time to learn what she needed to know. When her record label felt the time was right, they launched her. Lesson: Learning is important, but at some point you have to launch. 2. BE DARING & DIFFERENT Taylor Swift broke the mold. Kids simply didn't have hits on country radio. She dared to do the unthinkable. By not giving up, she eventually found a record label willing to give it a try. The accomplishments Taylor has achieved are impressive. She is the youngest songwriter to ever sign with Sony/ATV Music Publishing, one of the largest in the world. She is the youngest person to have ever write and perform a #1 song by themselves. Her 2nd album “Fearless” made her the youngest Album of the Year Grammy winner. Taylor Swift has only released 5 albums. Even so, she is the only artist to have 3 albums sell more than one million copies in the opening release week. That mark is even more impressive in today's music world on digital downloads when people are buying single songs over albums. With her latest album “1989”, Taylor left the world of country music to release a pop album. People thought she was crazy. She took the daring leap and sold over a million copies in the first week of release. It was also named one of the best albums of the year by magazines Rolling Stone, Time and others. By daring to be different, people take notice. Lesson: Do what others are scared to attempt. 3. PUT IN THE WORK Taylor Swift has many, many other awards. One of her attributes that make her so successful is the fact that she is willing to do things few others are willing to do. She goes above and beyond. When was the last time you sent a hand-written thank you note? I've had the great fortune of meeting many big names in the music business. Justin Timberlake, George Strait, Ozzy Osborne, Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Metallica. It is one of the perks of the business. The Program Director of a radio station decides which songs make it on the radio station. Artists usually want to take time to meet the person who holds the keys. They understand a handshake can go a long way. Most stop there. A typical meet & greet at a concert is in a converted locker room and resembles a cattle call. People wait in line making their way around the room until they reach the artist. "Thanks for being here. Let's get a photo. Enjoy the show." Taylor is different. Instead of a locker room, Taylor sets up a “tea party” or a “loft” party backstage, complete with soda machines, photo booths, high top tables, boas, other party accessories and a professional photographer. VIP guests hang out, eat munchies and get ready for the show. Instead of the handshake and photo op, Taylor makes her way around the room coming to each VIP for a photo and minute to chat. It is obviously different from every other experiences. It is what happens a week later that really sets Taylor apart. About a week after the concert, I received a hand-written note from Taylor thanking me for taking the time to bring my family to the show and for the support. Nobody does that, especially the biggest stars in music. Inside of my note was another hand-written note. This one was for my daughter. That note thanked my daughter for coming to the show. Taylor encouraged my daughter to stick with her piano lessons. She went on to tell my daughter to tell her friend Ellory (who was also with us) “hi”. The details Taylor included were amazing. I'm not sure if she has a photographic memory, if she video tapes the event to review later, if someone close by takes notes, or if there is some other magic involved. It really doesn't matter. What does matter is the fact that Taylor takes the time to ensure it all happens. That attention to details makes her stand out from every other artist. She is willing to do the extra work. Lesson: Do the things that others are not willing to do that will make you stand out. 4. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH HELP After a typical meet & greet, the artist typically sends you on your way. Instead of sending you to your seat, Taylor sent us on a backstage tour led by her mom, Andrea. Mama Swift led out around the backstage area telling us all about the stage and production. We saw the hydraulics under the stage. We saw the cases and trucks that transport the gear. We saw the costumes Taylor wore. She took us to the tour busses Taylor uses for the band and dancers. At the end of the tour, Taylor's mom took us directly to our seats. It was the kind of customer service you don't typically receive from average businesses. As Taylor's mom is leading us around backstage, Taylor is freed up to handle the other pre-show duties on her list. She needs to meet those in her fan club. She needs to warm up her voice. I'm sure there are a few other things in her routine before the show begins. The amazing team Taylor has assembled helps her be the best she can be. Lesson: Find great people that can help you.
