In this episode, Kat chats with sports commentator Harry Everett about his own mental health journey and the challenges men face in opening up about their struggles. Harry shares some personal stories, tips for getting through the winter blues, and how being real with others can make a huge difference. KEY TAKEAWAYS I used to hate this time of year when you'd go to work and come home in the dark. Now I do outdoorsy things like going for a run or a cycle during the day and I'll go to gym when it's dark. I'm lucky, being self-employed, that I can do that others might not be so lucky. But, if you're employed and can't run, cycle of exercise during the day, simply making sure you get outside on your lunch break can be enough to overcome seasonal affective disorder. In recent years I've not been very good in my own company, I get bored easily and have to ring people to talk to someone. Maybe I'm too extroverted or ADHD but feel like I need to be busy all the time or around people. I'd like to be more comfortable with just myself on my own and I've started testing myself when I'm away for work by going out to eat on my own, but it's a work in progress. My best mate, Max, killed himself when he was 19. I never got over it and always wanted to try to help and support him. At my wedding recently I didn't have a best man because Max was always supposed to be my best man, luckily I had some very understanding and supportive groomsmen! Instead we had a charity box set up for people to donate to MIND which was a positive way to honour him. If you give up an hour of your time to talk to someone, on a podcast for example, and show your vulnerability – it might make you feel uncomfortable, embarrassed or cringey, but that doesn't matter. You never know, your conversation could end up saving someone's life. BEST MOMENTS “During the Winter one of my friends has started to go to bed at 10pm and get up at 7pm to make the most of the daylight hours.”“There have been nights where I've woken up and taken myself to A&E because I've been considering doing what Max did. Probably because he did it is why I haven't done it because I've seen the pain it caused his family and friends.”“I want to raise awareness of mental health because it's an elephant in the room and a subject that people don't talk about enough.”“Anyone can do Movember for free, it costs nothing not to shave.” ABOUT THE GUEST Harry Everett is a freelance sports journalist, compere, host and coach who spends a lot of time commentating on Somerset cricket on their award-winning livestream and for BBC Sport on football and cricket amongst other more niche sports media roles such as Media Manager for Badminton England and work in pickleball too. He has also commentated on England Lions and Sri Lanka and South Africa's international sides and is regularly invited on other sports podcasts. He also tries to be a positive advocate for mental health and in getting young men speaking particularly too, you can donate to his Movember page here: X Instagram Do get in touch with him if wanted for speaking at any events ABOUT THE HOST Kat started her career as a teacher, before moving into Tech where she worked in different executive roles within teaching and consulting working across the globe, both in the public and private sector. Despite appearing 'successful' on the outside, she paid a heavy ‘life' price. In 2016, her whole world collapsed. The reason? The compound effect of years of unhealthy and toxic habits that destroyed her health, relationship and career. She suffered a severe breakdown and lost everything. In the middle of this she got headhunted for her first CEO role. She rebuilt herself by changing just one small habit, and built a series of positive habits which has transformed her professional and personal performance, resulting in becoming the healthiest and happiest version of herself. She is a positive habits international keynote speaker and teacher, giving talks and delivering high impact programmes to organisations across the globe. LinkedIn Instagram

What a victory that was! A victory for Somerset and a place in the One-Day Cup Final at Trent Bridge in September. But also a victory for cricket. We love this tournament and Sunday at Taunton brought out the very best in everyone. Not just the runs, the wickets, the tension. But also the supporters, the relationships, the harmony. Yes, the Leicestershire fans (who were brilliant) and players left disappointed. But a much wider battle was won. Days like these count, they really do. Naturally, this week's podcast focuses on that game. But we also touch on the England Lions before looking ahead to the County Championship's return. Yes, folks, it's back. Somerset head to Edgbaston on Thursday. Can they push for the title? (spoiler: yes). Joining Sam and Harry for the show was one of the best known voices in county cricket (and a massive Bears fan). Aaron Viles - AKA the Cricket Connoisseur - is the founder and host of the brilliant County Cricket podcast. What do you mean you haven't listened? No, but seriously, if you haven't, you really need to. Check out the show on Podbean, Apple Podcasts and all the usual spots. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Neil Manthorp is joined by the former England fast bowler Steve Harmison to preview England's upcoming T20 World Cup semi-final against India in Adelaide on Thursday. The Netherlands bowler Paul van Meekeren joins us to reflect on the Dutch qualifying automatically for a place in the Super 12 stages of the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA, and we discuss the biggest stories in English Cricket, as Ryan Campbell looks set to become Durham's new Head Coach, and England legends Ian Bell and Graeme Swann become mentors for the England Lions in the UAE. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Harrison Burridge is with Rob Rush, Rhiannon Blake and Karan Mehta to preview the T20 World Cup, discuss India and Pakisatan's relations and the England Lions squad.@MuraliPod on Twitter.
Host Carl Lewis is joined by cricket writer Daniel Gallan, the chatty pair discuss selection for the Proteas and preview a huge Test series. After managing to win just one Test match in 17 attempts, England has flipped the tables in the last four Test cricket matches, winning each of them more comprehensively than the last one. A thumping 3-0 series victory over New Zealand was followed by a record run chase in the last innings against India and all eyes will now be on whether or not the current method of the England batters, going hell for leather, is sustainable or not. England has played some sensational cricket of late, led by Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root. At the same time, one also has to concede that they have had the rub of the green, and some. The red ball has hardly swung this summer, highlighted by Joe Root's statement that he currently prefers to bat against the red ball than the white one, given the diametrically opposite manner in which both balls are behaving. The pitches too have been the most batting-friendly over the last 5 years and haven't really broken down in the last couple of days, assisting England to chase down mammoth totals. There won't be a lot of change in England's philosophy or personnel, apart from Ben Foakes coming in place of Sam Billings after having recovered from COVID-19. Both Craig Overton and Ollie Robinson are in the England squad but they might have to wait their turn with Stuart Broad, James Anderson and Matty Potts currently ahead of them in the pecking order and England showing more and more faith in their lead spinner Jack Leach. After playing white-ball cricket, South Africa did not have an ideal outing in the four-day practice match against England Lions, losing by a massive margin of an innings and 56 runs. However, one can never really read too much into warm-up matches and South Africa will be keen to become the first team to put up a strong resistance against the buzzword that is ‘Bazball'.
The panel preview the England-South Africa Test series, with Dean Elgar telling everyone he is definitely not worried about Bazball even after his side were smashed by England Lions. They look at South Africa's selection dilemmas, including whether county cricket titan Simon Harmer will play. The also discuss the Ollie Robinson v Stuart Broad conundrum, and what the series could mean for Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley. Away from the Test series, they discuss Trent Boult being released from his New Zealand contract, the latest developments in the South Africa and UAE T20 Leagues, week two of The Hundred, and the sides leading the way in the One-Day Cup. Neil Manthorp is joined by the former England fast bowler Steve Harmison to look back at England's record-breaking 7-wicket win over India at Edgbaston. So the Australian selectors have named their 15 man squad for the first two Ashes Tests, as well as an 11 man squad for Australia A, who will compete in a warm up fixture for the Ashes squad as well as playing match against the England Lions who are also in the country to do the same thing with England's Ashes squad. It is the earliest any Ashes squad for a home series has ever been named, and while the problems to do with quarantining and the pandemic will have been uppermost in Cricket Australia's minds, it also feels as though it was done to stop the ridiculous speculation that has been going on in the media over the last few weeks as to who will make the squad and who will be cast aside. So now that we have those squads, we can turn our attention to who is likely to make the final XI for Brisbane, and whether that team would change for Adelaide whatever the result is of the 1st Test. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/metalcavern/message
Curtis Camper takes 4 wickets in 4 balls at the T20 Cricket World Cup and Scotland beat Bangladesh. We're 2 days in and already have had some sensational individual and team performances.G1 Oman v Papua New Guinea - 11am Sun 17th - First Round Group B, Al AmeratPAPUA NEW GUINEA 129/9 (20 overs)Assad Vala 56 (43) Charles Amini 37 (26) (MOM) Zeeshan Maqsood 4/20(4) Bilal Khan 2/16(4)OMAN 131/0 (13.4/20 ov, target 130)Jatinder Singh 73* (42) Aqib Ilyas 50* (43) Oman won by 10 wickets (with 38 balls remaining)The hosts got off to an emphatic start clinching a 10-wkt win, set up in large part by their experienced skipper Zeeshan Maqsood who ripped through the PNG middle order. PNG got off to a shocker of start sitting 0-2 in the 1st 9 balls but captain Assad Vala (56) and Charles Amini (37) got them up to 81. It all went downhill from here, staggering to 112-5 and then 129 a/o. Jatinder Singh (73*) and Aquib Ilyas (50*) then made light work of the PNG attack, comfortably getting home inside 14 overs to get them off to a flying start. No shortage of MOM nominees for Oman with the unbeaten openers and 2 wkts for quick Bilal Khan but it was the winning skipper, Zeeshan Maqsood that was rightly awarded the honor. Star for Scotland was Chris Greaves playing in only his 2nd game – and who was until recently working delivering parcels for Amazon – whose top score knock of 45 batting at 7 helped Scotland to 140/9 after they had slipped to 53/6, before snaffling 2/19 in the Bangladesh reply including the wicket of star batsman Shakib al-Hasan. As for Shakib, his 2 wickets established him as the leading wicket taker in T20i history – with 108 victims – one more than SL legend Lasith Malinga. Tim Southee (99) and Rashid Khan (95) will both be looking to catch him up! Whilst Mark Adair took an impressive 3/9 in his 4 overs, it was Campher who will grab the headlines after taking 4 wkts in 4 balls in the 10th over – seeing off Colin Ackermann, Ryan ten Doeschate, Scott Edwards and Roelof van der Merwe. After which, the Netherlands were 51 for 6 before setting Ireland the modest target of 107 thanks to a plucky 21 from skipper Pieter Seelaar. Paul Sterling's 30* and a fluid 44 off 29 balls from Gareth Delaney got Ireland close before he was dismissed, allowing MOM Campher to be in at the end with an unbeaten 7 to go with 4 mightily impressive wickets. Having captained the England cricket team, as well as later becoming both a professional boxer and mixed martial arts fighter, there is no one else in the world who has experienced a sporting career like Adam Hollioake has. Despite having been born in Australia, as well as living in Hong Kong throughout his childhood, Adam Hollioake captained the England cricket team for the first time in 1997. In that same year, he made his test debut playing alongside his brother. Adam and his brother would go on to share the field together across multiple seasons with England and Surrey C.C.C. In 2002 though, in a piece of news that shocked all sports fans across the world, Adam's brother Ben tragically passed away in a car crash. As Adam refers to in our podcast, the emotions that the game evoked and the associations the game had with his brother, meant he faced a difficulty of playing the sport and it wasn't long before he then retired. Since retiring, apart from a brief return to T20 cricket in 2007, he became a professional boxer and a professional MMA fighter. The ability to not only face the physical fear of entering a ring, but also the fear of entering a new sport completely, is something Adam coped with in a way that not many could. In our conversation he says it's down to a lack of fear - something that, if harnessed correctly, can be incredibly effective. Adam had stints coaching England Lions and Afghanistan after calling quits on his fighting career, the latter stint of which led him to experience a terrorist attack – which Adam details in our podcast and the reflection and description could not be more timely considering the shocking scenes that we are currently seeing in the country. He now coaches Queensland Bulls, the Sheffield Shield winners, and the side of Marnus Labuschagne – one of the world's best test player. It was amazing to hear first-hand reflections of how one of the best performers in one of the world's largest sports, goes about their daily work. As Adam says, it's a thirst for knowledge and an unrelenting dedication to improve that lead him to his success. Adam is an incredibly deep-thinker – which suits what we're trying to achieve with the podcast perfectly. We talked about everything from the importance of living without fear, the reality that life is a constant learning journey and how success seems more sweet when you've experienced failure with it.

Welcome to this episode of The Cricket Mentoring Podcast. After a 3 month break I'm pumped to be back and hopefully bigger and better than ever before. I really want to make this podcast as interesting and valuable for you as it can be! This episode, which was recorded a few months ago while I was in the UK, is with one of the England cricket teams sports psychologists, Mike Rotheram. Mike, who is a cricketer himself, started working with the England men's team and England Lions and is now working closely with the England women. With 9 years of studying under his belt, Mike is extremely qualified to teach the mental skills required to perform at the highest level. In this episode we discussed: How he became a sports psychologist after not being good enough to make it as a player How he did a PHD in the Yips and what causes the yips What a sports psychologist does What the traits are of elite athletes How he coaches players who over analyse or overthink things How the coaches set up sessions to test and train their players under pressure The difference between people who are driven by consequences and those that are driven by rewards and how to work out who needs what. Plus a whole lot more. This is an awesome insight into how some of the world's best players train and work on their mental skills. If you're interested in getting the most out of yourself and trying the techniques that aren't really talked about on a regular basis then this is a great episode that you will get a lot of value from, so lets get into it.
